OOC

If it's ok, I'd like to start in western Varisia. That's where the group went raiding, whether as bandits or mercenaries.

Sure, sounds good (from what I know of the setting, at least).

Please tell me: do the Ulfen people engage in raids? From what I read in the books, they are more like farmers and sailors. On the other hand, one of their kings (the female one) is said to have made raids...

BTW. What's your take on alignment? Are all good characters sickeningly sweet, or can they be angry, not always willing to quickly jump to help others etc.? Can my former raider be a good character, or would she rather be neutral?

They are vikings with a different name! Yes, of course. Less often than a generation ago, but old habits die hard.

I don't really care about alignment, I'm more interested in personality. I consider myself Neutral Good in DnD terminology, and I do get angry, hurt people sometimes, deliberately look out for my own interests, and when I see some problem I can't help I shrug sadly and go on.

I see!

Another question: mercenary companies. Would you say it'd be possible for a mercenary company to be at least partially family-based? Meaning, with one generation of mercenaries inducting their children as recruits etc.?

I ask these questions as I'm trying to work out the details of my character's background...

Re: level. Yeah, my character would have a few levels of barbarian and one level of oracle. How about a barbarian 3 / oracle 1 configuration?

I could base a whole campaign on that idea, and I'm a bit envious someone came up with the idea first. Also nice background, your character might visit them now and then, for local info and some martial backup as well.

Fine with me. Not too high, but gives a background for the character.

Well, my idea is more that they kicked her out after she got... uhm, strange. ;)

Anyway, I'm currently reading on Land of Linnorn Kings and Varisia. I'm still thinking whether it'd be more fitting to make my character's family a group of raiders from the Land or a group of Riddleport mercenaries...

Sorry it's taking that long!

Ok. It was just an idea.

And we don't have a deadline or anything.

Oh, I'm not saying we can't use it :) I'd just like to add the wrinkle of my character and her family / company not having parted ways on completely good terms.

I know, but I realize it might not be fun to wait for me all the time. So...

... I have worked out the background!

I'd like to go with my character having been a second-generation member of an Ulfen company of mercenaries who also did some raiding on the side. I see the company as being based in the Riddleport area and having been created by various Ulfen warriors (pirates, mercenaries, some Irrisen refugees...) who, a generation ago, came together under one strong leader and formed a kind of small community that earned their living by raiding, renting their services for money etc.

My character would be a young woman born into this company, one trained as a warrior, with some battle experience under her belt. One day, when passing next to the Cyphergate, she had her oracular revelation that opened her eyes to all the fascinating and precious knowledge in the world. Since then, she has been obsessed with it - so, she parted ways with the company and started her travels.

Does it sound okay?

Yeah, it does. Gives me ideas.

If there's any other info on the character or the company, tell me.

Re: OOC

I really like your description of Drake's Lair! If I come up with anything else, I'll add it.

I started creating the character today... I'm fiddling with the ability scores currently - it's a bit tricky, as they need to fit my PC's personality.

Question: how high a score is 12, 14, 16, exactly? For example, is a person with Intelligence 14 very talented, or just smart?

Oh, an question regarding multiclassing: if I understand correctly, normal character gets a +1 ability increase very fourth level. But for multiclassed character, is it every fourth character level, or every fourth class level?

Strange, I didn't find it in the core book. Anyway, 10 is the average, so Int 14 is very smart / logical.

Didn't find it, either, but whatever the book says it will be every fourth character level.

Re: OOC

I've just found the latter: Table 3-1: Character Advancement and Level-Dependent Bonuses.

Both the feats at every odd level and the ability increases at every level divisible by four are based on character level, not class level.

Re: OOC

Agh. Sorry for the lack of updates from me - a combination of RL factors (demanding work schedule, birthday celebrations etc.) made it so I didn't have time for RPOL matters in this last few days.

I plan on working on the character tomorrow!

Re: OOC

Ah, thanks :)

Could you add a empty sheet-space for my character details? There's none at the moment.

EDIT: Oh, and a small question: humans gain 1 bonus skill rank at 1st level and 1 bonus skill rank every time they gain a level. Does it mean humans get 2 skill ranks at 1st level?

I think I did.

I think you don't gain level 1, you start with it. This whole sentence is the over-clarifying of humans gain 1 bonus skill rank at every level.

But, that one skill point won't hurt me or the game, and game balance is not an issue in a solo game.

Another small question: feats are gain every other character level, not class level, right?

EDIT: I put an empty sheet into my character details. I'll be filling it out gradually today and tomorrow...

Re: OOC

One more question, if you don't mind:

When it comes to barbarian's rage, the book says:

Starting at 1st level, a barbarian can rage for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + her Constitution modifier. At each level after 1st, she can rage for 2 additional rounds.

This means that a level 3 barbarian can rage for 6 additional rounds, right?

+2 at level 2, +4 at level 3, +6 at level 4, etc., according to the book. However, you should probably get that advantage because of solo gaming, just as the extra skill points. No-one will complain... :)

Re: OOC

No, let's stick to the rules. I actually realized I miscalculated that bonus myself and I'm not complaining.

Character creation continues! As you can see in my character sheet, I have the 1st level stats worked out. I plan on dealing with the rest of the barbarian levels tomorrow and move to the oracle part. That might involve some head-scratching...

Question: what about character wealth? The rulebook gives details for 1st level characters - and general numbers for advanced characters. According that latter part, my character should start as stunningly wealthy - a few thousand gold pieces or so... How shall we treat that? I'd be okay with us using the numbers for the 1st level characters - I mean, my character might be a 4th level PC, but she's just starting out her solo travels... What do you think?

With CON bonus, shouldn't Hp be 14?

The book assumes several masterwork items, weapons, armor, maybe non-combat items, and several magic items -- max half spent on a single item. I haven't checked masterwork item prices, I'll do it soon.

Hm. I don't really see my character as being as well equipped as the book assumes...
