Chatper 1.5: Interlude - Feels Street
With Whitney and Malun safely in the limousine and driving away, they could enjoy a somewhat more relaxed and quick journey home. Meanwhile, Jason, July and Garret had a few more miles ahead of them, but they could make good time on foot, and more importantly, they could discuss everything they needed to.

As the limousine pulled away, Garrett watched it go. Then the tall, broad-shouldered boy seemed to... deflate a bit as a breath left him and a sudden tension relaxed. As they started walking, he stuffed one hand in his pocket, the other holding onto the strap of his bag that was hanging off one shoulder.

After a few seconds of slightly awkward silence, he finally seemed to relent and murmured "Thanks guys. You didn't have to do that."

A clearing of his throat followed, and he glanced at July. "Lets get to Noel's first."

July waved as the limousine doors snapped shut, watching the vehicle as it pulled away and disappeared around a corner. The earth remained still, and there was a merciful lack of giant snakes in pursuit of the vehicle. Safe. They were safe. For how long?

Garrett's murmured thanks disrupted her maudlin thoughts. She turned, fixing blue eyes on the slouching boy. She offered a tired smile, gently elbowing his side as the three of them began the long trek to Noel's.

"Don't worry about it, dork," Her cheek dimpled with her teasing. After a moment, she squinted, examining him a little more closely. Although he didn't look ready to upchuck on his shoes, Garrett still looked decidedly worse for wear. "You look a little rough there, buddy. You doing alright?"

"Hmm? Oh, I'm fine," Garrett said.

He was not fine, and the surest sign of that was that the elbowing which normally wouldn't so much as shifted his posture made him take a small shuffle step to avoid stumbling into Jason on his other side. He managed a half-grin that nonetheless showed a bit of tension in his neck. "I just... whatever I did, it felt like it hollowed me out a bit. I feel like I've just run up and down the field twelve times in a minute. Whatever.. all this is, I don't think I got a lot of it in me."

The headache was coming back, a little. He wasn't sure why.

He shook his head, still keeping up a strident pace. "Seriously though. Jules. Jay. Holy shit the stuff you guys did back there. Bolts of fire and scaring it off and--" he paused here, looking at the girl on his left, again "--and when you said kick it's ass I was pretty sure I could've gone through that thing. That was amazing!"

That thing. He paused. Brows drew together in momentary silence.

"So. That existed. I... are you guys okay? How’s everyone handling... that?”

Jason gave a simple wave to the car as Woolsworth pulled away. This day wasn't over and it had already been a lot. While he was mostly coming on the walk to help keep an eye out in case more crazy ass monsters showed up, he was also concerned for his friends. He noted how drained Garret seemed, and knowing him, he'd try to fight anything anyway. Garret's question was hard to process.

"I feel... different, for sure. It's like this heat in my muscles, it doesn't burn but like, it moves? And I can move it? It's also not my own energy, somehow? It makes no sense, obviously, nothing today makes sense. What was that light, Garret? How did your screaming at it actually hurt it, July?"

July arched a brow as if to say Really? as Garrett stumbled, claiming to be fine. She knew him well enough to call bullshit, and part of her wondered if she had made the wrong call, pushing to walk home. He should probably be resting.

"Oh--so that helped? I, uh, had no idea what I was doing," July laughed uncomfortably as Garrett and Jason mentioned her contribution, rubbing the back of her neck.

"There was just this...fire. Like, I couldn't even think straight. I mean, it felt pretty amazing, like playing a show but just, ten thousand times better. One minute I was panicking and then the next, I don't know, like...instinct kicked in? I don't know what that instinct was, but I could touch Skethar's mind with my words? Which is crazy, I know. But I felt its thoughts when I was talking to it. And when I shouted at you--" she looked over at Garrett, furrowing her brows as she tried to make sense of that golden light. There were no words for that blinding heat, the way her skin had felt ready to ignite when her words and that light had connected. "I don't even know. It's like that fire wanted me to give you some of it. It kind of felt like giving blood, actually? Afterwards, I mean."

"Man, Jay. You're a damn blowtorch."

The two explanations entered opposite sides of his ears as Garrett's boots crunched over gravel on asphalt. Heat. Fire. Infusing forces and power that wanted to go somewhere. It all made his head spin. He followed each of them, brows drawing together as he kept his feet moving. One in front of the other. Whatever they'd experienced, it resonated, but not... exactly. There was heat, and a sense of coming from elsewhere, but also. What she'd said.

July's words elicited a look from the taller boy, and slightly raising eyebrows. "Damn, Jules. That's... intense." He took a breath. It was just the sun, making his face red. Yeah that was it. Too hot. "Well," he said after a second, "it worked, 'cause I'm... ninety-nine-point-nine percent sure I only hit Skelth-Skith-oh-fuck-it, Skittles, because I had your soul-music in my head." The shrug of his shoulders was a little awkward. "So thanks. That was some one-in-a-million stuff."

Yeah. What they'd gone through was familiar... except in his case, there had been another dimension. Purpose. When that thing had shown up, so had it. A counterpoint. Reflexive. something stepping into the space of the bully to knock it flat before it could hurt anyone.

"I..." he paused for a moment, finally getting to Jason's question. As he stared into space, his expression intensified. "... I don't know what it was. It just... that thing was there, and it wanted to hurt you all. And I couldn't let it do that. Not to any of you. Not to anyone else. I knew I had to do something, and then..." he looked at his callused right hand. "I guess I did."

Then he scratched the back of his head and cleared his throat awkwardly. "I kinda have a headache, though. Feel a bit sick. Probably dehydration."

Jason nodded quietly as he listened to his friends. They all had something else inside them now, it seemed.

“So you can put stuff into people heads huh? Jules? That’s uh, pretty scary powerful actually.”

He thought for a moment, then smirked, looking back to Garret.

“And uh... screwdriver daylight shank? Do you always copy those cartoon attacks when you punch someone you giant nerd?” Jason chuckled. “Did that like, actually help or was it just flavor?”

"Glad it helped then?" July shrugged as Garrett thanked her, folding her arms beneath her chest. She wasn't sure what her 'soul-music' had done, but, hey, at least it had done something.

Was that something good, though? Jason's comment about her...whatever she had done, gave July pause. She hadn't even been aware of what she was doing, let alone the how, let alone the implications of it. There had been no room, no time, to be scared in the fight. Now, though? The idea that she could hurt things with her words was more than a little unsettling.

Keep it together, July pushed forward, lengthening her stride until she was walking several paces ahead of the boys. She turned sharply on heel so that she was walking backwards, facing them with a wide grin.

"If you're going to shout attack names like a gigantic fuckin' dork, Garrett, you should probably take some time to workshop something a bit cooler than that," July teased with a fiendish laugh, sticking her tongue out at her friend. "Otherwise Jason and I not only have the right but the moral obligation to mock you mercilessly. Sorry, I don't make the rules!"

As she walked forward Garrett gulped and stutter-stepped for an almost imperceptible half-step. Oh hell. Too much. Made her uncomfortable. Dammit. Nice job, dude.

So it was a huge relief when one joke followed another. He'd been so wrapped up in the weirdness of it all and the cloud of sudden insecurity that he hadn't even thought of the battlecry until now. The thought of the blazing white power pouring through him filled his mind, and the gut-check jerk pulling him towards it.

He shook his head, and let out the first real laugh of the day. Garrett sort of had two kinda of laughter. The first was the sardonic sort of humor he evidenced under stress and pain. Then there was the other one, seldom seen. His face would light up with a boyish sort of innocence, and the laugh would be loud, carefree, and bright.

That was what came out of him. He shook slightly as he walked through it, then stumbled a bit and coughed. "I mean," he finally said, directing his grin at July, "guilty as charged. But look at it this way, I didn't yell Spirit Bomb or kamehameha. I also didn't just scream incoherently for two episodes worth of screen-time."

A long pause followed and he ran a hand awkwardly through his hand and self-consciously scratched the back of his head, glancing at Jason and then looking at July. "... was it that bad?"

Jason laughed, and patted Garret on the shoulder.

"You know, man, given how tense that whole thing was? I only really noticed afterwards. It was... good? I mean if it helps, why not, right?" He smiled wryly "And hey, if this goes on? You'll get to practice a few more attack names."

For a moment, it was just a normal afternoon in Gridley. July's grin widened as Garrett laughed, unrestrained and unburdened. Snorting as he pitched his unused alternatives, she rolled her eyes.

"If you start screaming, I'm out," July warned. Slowing her pace for the boys to catch up, her expression softened at Garrett's concern.

If this goes on, you'll get to practise a few more attack names. Jason said it so casually, and all pretenses of a normal afternoon slipped away. July's arms tightened around her middle, as if she could physically hold herself together.

"It's not that bad. I mean, I've known for ages that you're a nerd, so it's not that surprising. It's pretty on brand for you," July's voice was gentler, even through her teasing. Turning around--as walking backwards was almost guaranteed to end badly with her spatial awareness--she looked over to Jason and wrinkled her nose. "Hey so...how did you know I'd seen that gap? I only noticed it like, right before Skethar--okay, fine, Skittles-- showed up."

Teasing Garret was always more fun when July joined in, and Jason laughed even more when she did. At her question, he tried to calm down from the laughter, and then paused, and raised an eyebrow at July's question.

"Uh... you told me? I remember you saying there was a smaller gap right before we the fight really got going. That was you, right?"

The smile on July's face faltered a little bit at Jason's insistence, dark brows knitting together as she looked to the redhead.

"I didn't say it, though," July said after a moment, her voice cautious, "Like, out loud, I mean."

His smile brightened for a brief flicker. That joy was real, was what mattered. He shouldered his bag a bit, standing a little taller. Seeming a bit more at ease. The last two weeks had carried a host of difficult realizations and new weights unceremoniously dumped on the bar--rude--but her softer expression lifted his spirits.

It always did.

"I yam what I yam," he grunted, giving his best popeye impression in response to the teasing. Complete with a scowl and miming a reed pipe sticking out of the corner of his mouth.

Then they were back. Right. That had all just happened. He frowned in thought. Okay, he'd known to move in because it retreated and the second time she told him to kick its ass... but he hadn't heard anything inside his head. Not from her anyway.

A quick pause as they walked. Garrett jogged just a bit ahead. A mailbox was sitting jaunty on a post outside someone's front door, and it picked at his brain. Hey--he had a screwdriver. A quick crouch and a glance. He pulled out the tool Malun had thrown him and shifted the box before tightening the screws underneath. He could still hear them talking, and responded over his shoulder when the opening appeared.

"Yeah, uh, Jay?" he said to his friend, "I didn't hear it either, so that's news to me." A small pause followed. He had heard something inside his skull though, and not from July. "I... did hear Malun, though. I think she told me she was gonna toss the screwdriver and ram it into the thing's skull."

It had worked. Kinda.

There. Fixed. Garrett straightened and wiped his hands off on his jeans, jogging back to rejoin their even pace..

"So yeah. I believe it."

Jason seemed to pause in his thoughts while Garret messed around with the busted mailbox. It was charming that his friend would care that much about something so small that someone else may not even notice, but the idea of July saying something to him in his mind was too distracting for him to say that.

"Jules, did you talk to my mind? With your mind? Try it again."

July shot Garrett a curious look as he jogged ahead, fiddling with an off-centered mailbox. She'd long since grown used to his insatiable need to fix things--less so with his seeming vow of silence in regards to said acts of service. One of these days, she was going to get him to accept credit for his deeds, damn it.

Her unease grew as Jason bade her to just...talk into his head again. She had barely even been aware of doing it. Garrett's vote of confidence would normally have helped, but this was anything but normal.

"I don't even know how I did it," But even as she spoke, she could feel the fire answering in her skin, eager to burn. The world felt like it was running twenty degrees hotter, but the sensation was anything but unpleasant. Her thoughts blurred, like a lens shifting focus, a radio tuning to a new station. She was dimly aware of a rush of heat and smoke as her thoughts found home in a different skull. Testing, testing, one two three testing.

July uses the Message cantrip on Jason.

Jason wasn’t really thinking about how weird it sounded to say what he just said out loud. But besides that it was a weird day already. So July didn’t know how she made it happen. Okay, fine, if it doesn’t work no big deal. Then he heard it.

Wow it worked! Can she hear what I’m thinking back?

He also mentioned it out loud. “That worked! I heard you! You mic checked it? Whatever, it worked!”

July jumped as Jason's voice echoed in her head, his thoughts red hot and crackling. She swore she could taste smoke on the edges of his words, and it was officially the strangest sensation she'd experienced in all sixteen of her years on this planet.

Loud and clear.

"That feels so weird," July wrinkled her nose at Jason. "Your thoughts taste like... smoke? This is really fucking bizarre."

The fire in her skin flickered, and she could feel her thoughts snap back into place suddenly, severing the line between the pair of them. July tightened her arms around herself, looking thoroughly unsettled.

Garrett watched the exchange, slowing his pace as he reached the two of them again. Okay, so, it had worked, whatever it was. Moreover, it looked like she could hear what Jason was thinking whenever she did... whatever she'd just done. The tall boy paused, and found himself seriously considering a few things that he'd previously not given much thought to.

Okay so uh. If she does that to you, be very careful about what you think in response.

Simple and easy, right?

Ah ha ha ha. Ha ha. Ha.

Anyway.

Her discomfort was obvious. Directly at odds with Jason's enthusiasm. Alright. Change of pace. He sidled up to the tall girl--one of the few he knew near his height, and gave her a slight nudge with his elbow. "Sounds intense," he said, offering an expression that was more empathetic than encouraging. "So hey--I never got a chance to really ask? How was that show at the Pine-box? Sorry I had to miss it."

At the same time he shot Jason a quick look that he hope conveyed 'lets let this sit for a bit.'

He blinked, briefly pondering the odd thought that his thoughts could have a flavor to them. He was about to say something when he noticed July looking uncomfortable, and Garret interjected to try and lighten the mood a bit. He took the hint well enough.

Just have to make it to Noel's. Keep it together a little bit longer, girl.

July's mental admonishments did little to quiet the fear roiling in her stomach. Nothing about this afternoon should be possible, and yet it had happened. She could touch minds with her thoughts, could hurt people, could somehow siphon off the inferno in her skin and give it to others, and they should have died against Skethar. She knew it in her bones, in the same way she knew there was fire beneath her finger tips just waiting to ignite.

Garrett's elbow nudged her side and July flinched, pulled from the spiral of her thoughts. Easy. It's fine. Just a little bit longer. He offered a distraction by way of a question. Their show at the Pinebox in Chico. It felt like a lifetime ago, but it had only been a few weeks.

"Oh," July said, intelligently. She forced her smile back into place, her voice going bright as she looked between Garrett and Jason, "No worries, you guys are busy! And it was good! I mean like, it's always a treat to get out of Gridley, you know? And like, Chico's not great, but it's at least better than this shitty town? The crowd had really good energy too, it was a lot of fun! We ended up kicking it at Dennys afterwards with one of the other bands, the Detonators, and they're a riot. We're going to try to meet up for Warped Tour this summer in San Francisco."

She was, at least, breathing a little easier. There was always calm to be found in music, even just in talking about it. July tucked a bang behind her ear, and the grin she gave Garrett was a little less strained.

"Thanks, by the way, for the card. I don't know how you got it into my case, but that was really nice of you."

They'd lost to the Chico High Panthers last season. Garrett had been down-field waiting for a pass, trying to dance around that huge blocker they had. The guy who looked like a refrigerator with legs grafted on. He'd turned only to see David White getting sacked in the last 15 seconds. The guy had beaten himself up so bad. Especially since it was his Senior Year.

Then she mentioned the Dennys get-together.

"Oh shit!" Garrett's eyes climbed at mention of the Detonators. "I think I know them. Sounds like a helluva night!"

Warped Tour. Right. San-Francisco. He shouldered his bag as he walked. He honestly hadn't given a ton of thought to what he was going to do this summer. Warped Tour--he'd remembered July and Noel making plans. Excited. Holly had talked about dragging him out to her uncle's place on the coast in June, but that was... well.

Not worth thinking about. He hadn't given all that much thought since two weeks ago when--No. No we're not gonna think about that. Nuh uh. Verboten. Kinji rareta.

Then she mentioned the card and for just a second he almost tripped. "Oh! Right! You liked it? Good! I mean--" Dude what are you doing WHAT ARE YOU DOING "--I just... Good. That's good."

He cleared his throat. "Oh, what? I--" pause "--hey, a guy's gotta keep some secrets, yeah?" A grin followed. "It's not like I got much mystique to begin with."

BOY AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH. NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP.
