With his spear in hand and hi shield ready on his arm, Valenstos glances nervously around checking the ground for recent tracks.

You cautiously turn a corner and see something that's odd. A rock has been knocked over and the damp earth below it is bared so it must have been moved in the last hour.

(You may ready your shield if you like.

Something's not right. Your mouth is dry and you lick your lips.
You sweep your head from side to side trying to see anything among the jumbled masonry but you see or hear nothing. You start to think maybe that rock just slipped after all, but no. There must be something out here.

(Roll Listen again, normal chance)

You try to hear as hard as you can but nothing attracts you attention. You go to start off but something's still not right.

(Yet another Listen roll please.)

You stop still as a statue. Yes, you definitely heard something. Just over there, near that toppled colonnade . . .

Peering around from a shattered wall you see a loathsome sight; a bull scorpionman peering off to where you were a few moments ago.

The creature us huge, as big as a small horse, and its six legs are splayed across the rubble for secure footing. What drew your eyes is the slow curling and uncurling of its hideous tail, a tail capped with a stinger the size of a helmet and armed with a slightly curved spike as long as your forearm.

The creature is naked but its skin is heavily segmented and chitinous, not like a normal being. It carries a battle axe in one hand and a sling in the other.

Suddenly it glances your way . . .

The creature's head snaps around and it glares at you in fury. Too close to use its sling, it grabs its battle axe in two hands and rushes towards you screaming a lurid battle-cry.

(You can cast one spell and then it is combat time)

Valenstos readies his spear and shield and then touching the focus on the shaft casts bladesharp (2) upon it.

He then attempts to parry any incoming attacks and stabs with his spear.

The monster's rush brings it alongside you. Roaring in inarticulate fury it swings its axe two-handed as its deadly stinger lunges at you as well.

(Statement of intent please)

Gurgling a warcry the scorpionman skutters around you, jabbing with it's sting and trying to fend off your spear with its axe. It seems to have totally forgot that it can hit with the axe.

Your spear darts in, severing one of its legs. It squeals in pain but the gout of ichor from the severed members quickly slows to a trickle and hardly seems to have slowed it at all. The stinger darts forwards but you bat it away with your shield.

Circling each other you and the scorpionman lunge and parry. Your spear is knocked away by its axe and you bat away its stinger. Sweat starts to drip into your eyes and the urgent moves kick up dust on the rocky hillside. Your spell flares and blood erupts from the creature's face, dazing it for a split second.

Once again the bellowing scorpionman knocks away your spear. He convulses and the sting flicks forward, but misses you and the sting buries itself in the mud brick wall nearby. His eyes bulge as he tries to get it free but he can't budge it.

Desperately trying to free itself the scorpionman once again seems to utterly forget that it could strike with its axe and instead makes a despairing attempt to block Valenstos' merciless spear. The spear licks out and slices into the front leg on the scorpionman's left side, and with the already cripple centre leg there he can no longer support his weight and crashes onto the rubble slope. However the stump of the leg seals itself almost immediately again and seems to lessen the chaot's vitality not in the least.

(New Round, roll away.)

In desperation the scorpionman wrenches its tail free of the wall, tearing the stinger clean off. It pivots slightly to face you and swings its axe frantically but misses you by a wide margin and you knock it away harmlessly.

Blood spurts from its throat. In seconds it shudders and then becomes still. Looking up you see the dark bulk of the Scorpion Hall on the hill. It is an irregular bastioned fortress on a slight rise.

If you return to your camp to recover magic you will probably encounter another scorpionman hunter. Deciding against it you push on up the hill to the gates.

Knowing that there are scorpionmen in the area he decides to keep his spear and shield to hand and has his bladesharp spell ready to mind should he need to cast it in a hurry.
