Ground Floor - Scorpion Hall
You mount the slight slope to where Scorpion Hall broods along on a small hill. The ancient walls are truncated, there was originally another level above the g round floor but it has vanished. Carefully you check the walls and chimneys for look-outs but there appears to be none. You do note that there is a chimney (fancy newfangled things!) on the west side that emits a thin thread of smoke.

Avoiding the path you climb to the base of the wall noting that there are huge clumps of natural quartz among the rocks of the slopes. There are no windows or other apertures in the walls so you head into courtyard through the long-gone gates. The architrave over the gates has been gouged out and the inscriptions obliterated.

The courtyard is large and flat. Along the interior are arrow slits that have been blocked up for some reason but at one time this area would have been a death-trap.

The courtyard is 10m x 14m and is of course open to the sky. There is some writing on the walls here in there, one in chalk, one in what looks like charcoal and one that is crudely inscribed letters. The archway is in the southwest corners and is 2m wide. There is a large pile of stone rubble in the northeast corner. There are four doors in the courtyard. They are all the same size and are large but not unusual doors made out of very thick wood you suspect has been sourced from the swamp cypress downriver a long way.

Scanning from the gateway your keen vision takes in the inscriptions. The inscribed letters are in dark tongue and are near the SW door. There is an imperial one in the NW corner and another imperial one on the east wall. Finally there is a theyalan one near the rubble.

Keeping to the edges as much as possible, Valenstos makes his way round to the NW gateway. He keeps an eye out for any traps or possible attackers as he does.

Ground Floor - Scorpion Hall
In reply to Valenstos (msg # 2):

A cheerful fire burns in the chimney at the west end of this huge vaulted hall.

Standing before you is a scorpionman - with no tail. He says something to you but it sounds like it's in dark tongue.

The scorpionman has a gloomy, suspicious face but takes no aggressive actions. He is armed with a short spear and a targe.

He sees his bladesharp did not work and tries to recast it. It fails again so he scraps the idea and stalks towards the scorpionman with his shield and spear ready.

Alarmed, the scorpionman scuttles over to the table near him and casts a spell at you. The crackle of energy encompasses you but you shrug it off.

Raising its shield and spear it tries to keep the table between you and it.

Ground Floor - Scorpion Hall
The spell sizzles across the intervening space and tears into the scorpionman's right middle leg. The scorpionman transfers the spear to its shield hand and suddenly reaches below the table. There's a loud *clunk!* and a crossbow bolt shoots straight at you and frighteningly goes between your legs. The scorpionman looks horrified that the bolt has missed you and starts to cast a spell.

Valenstos ducks down grabs a fist sized rock and hurls it at the scorpionman.

Re: Ground Floor - Scorpion Hall
The scorpion man comes out from behind the table now the crossbow has been shot and attacks with his spear while parrying with his shield

The room is quite tidy, yet surprisingly you do find a big fist-sized chunk of rock to throw.

You can throw the rock and still attack at SR 10, but you will only have one action left after throwing the rock. Otherwise you can abort the rock throw and melee normally.

Roll away

You circle each other, the firelight flickering off your armour and weapons. Suddenly you both stab, your spear tears away one of its legs and it howls in pain but simultaneously the scorpionkin's own spear drives through your hauberk's skirt and slices open your right thigh.

(3 points damage to your right leg)

New round

The scorpionman grunts a spell in his barbarous tongue. Suddenly a wall of blackness appears between you and him.

Valenstos charges the wall of darkness. He aims to the right of where the scorpionman was standing, hoping to pop out a couple of meters from him so he does run right into its spear.

As you erupt from the plane of darkness you see that in the interim the scorpionman has fled to the southern door. However, in his haste he's blundered into a trap! A large net falls onto him and he's struggle wildly against its bonds. It makes a despairing cry as it sees you approach.

Re: Ground Floor - Scorpion Hall
Unable to parry or escape, the scorpionman dies under the relentless blade of your spear. You feel a momentary pang of remorse, did the creature really pose a threat? Still, the uroxi have a saying 'small chaos is all chaos'. No doubt the monster would not ruch outto save you should you fall into the clutches of its kin.

You look around the big room, it has many pillars and a vaulted ceiling and the only light is from the fire burning in the large fireplace. Judging from the holes in the walls this place was once a barracks room and there would have been bunks all around the walls.
Shrugging, you look to the loot. The scorpionman was draped in padded heavy leather. While the armour of its scorpion-parts are useless to you the humanoid sections (locations 09-20) are fine and would probably fit an average-sized person. The scorpionman also had a good short spear and a stout hoplon (hoplite shield, also known as an 'aspis'). You look at the heavy crossbow it had that is secured under the table, a possibly new weapon to you as they are uncommon. It is in good shape and there was a bolt case with a dozen bolts all up on the table. Finally, the big net it had that it blundered into is more like a tough cargo net than a fishing net. While it wouldn't be useful for a fisherman the river traders might buy it. It's too big to throw but can be used again as a trap.
Smiling, you note the creature had a pouch on a belt around its waist. Opening it you find two gems wrapped in a clean rag.

Nothing seems to have heard the fight, the thick walls probably muffled the sound.

What do you do next?

Hearing nothing behind the door, you push it open. This big room may have been a store room or an officer's room. Any furniture once in here is now gone. However there's an ugly and stinking trail of lurid slime leading to the west door . . .
