Prologue: A Night in Court
Bedivere stares at Yuki while she apologizes, but doesn't otherwise respond to it. When Yuki pulls out her cellphone, however, Bedivere nods and rattles off Lancelot's phone number. "That's his cellphone. He lives in Boston, so even if he had a landline that wouldn't be helpful. I don't think the cellphone will be useful either, though. We have a ghoul trying to call him every thirty minutes to no success. That's why we want the two of you to go there and figure out what is going on."

Sliding her phone back into its pocket, Yuki nods. "That's all I've got to ask, then." The pang of hunger gnaws at her, but she shoves it aside. Something to deal with afterwards.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Dana quickly digs her phone out of her pocket and types Lancelot's number into her contacts, making a mental note never to let any of Ye Olde Round Table see that she had entered him in under 'Lance'. She nods her agreement with Yuki. "Yeah. That's about all I've got," she said, hooking her thumbs into the pockets of her jeans. "Sooner we get started, sooner we finish up and all that." Dana flashed a fanged smile at Bedivere. "We'll do our best, ma'am."

Prologue: A Night in Court
"Very well. Leonard will drive you to Springfield, and take care of keeping me updated." Bedivere nods to the two vampires and moves back to the throne room. Dana remembers Leonard as one of the ghouls owned by the court -- ghouls that were created and are bonded to Arthur himself or one of his Knights -- and, in particular, she remembers him as being an uncharacteristically easy-going and friendly face among the usual gloom of the court's vampires.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Yuki gives a quick nod in the affirmative. This has all been moving rather quickly for the young vampire, but she concludes that it is in her best interest to get out of Elysium and start this errand, worryingly dangerous-sounding as it may be, as quickly as possible, that her unlife could have a chance to settle into a routine afterwards. The flurry of events complicating her existence in the last month are something she is rather looking forward to putting behind her, but, well... one more strange night seems little enough to add to what has already been a long string of them.

Considering what Dana says, it seems she's of a similar mind, at least as far as getting this over with is concerned. The eager socialite's comment does kindle something in Yuki, however. Quickly... but not so quickly as to make a mistake. There's a difference between not wanting to be a monster and wilfully throwing yourself onto a werewolf's claws from being in too much of a rush to settle in. Something she\d have to mention to her senior while they were on-route.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Dana brightens visibly at the mention of Leonard. He, at least, might be more forthcoming and less somewhat nerve-wracking to talk to. Less chance of getting beheaded for a misstep. And he was just generally more... easygoing than Bedivere in general. So perhaps this job might be looking up a little. Except for the investigating murders and stopping a supernatural serial killer monster thing while praying Lance was alive because Arthur would probably not be thrilled if he wasn't. But there'd be Leonard. So there'd be someone to talk to if Yuki turned out to be the quiet sort.

Turning to the other neonate as Bedivere exits, Dana smiles. "We didn't really get formally introduced. I'm Dana Mercer, ex-Sabbat, current vampire, and potential murderer-bait it would seem. Nice to meet you." She stretches her arms behind her back idly. "I should be able to drag Leonard out from wherever he is if you want to get started right away... though, I've got a couple things I should pick up at my place... and I, ah... may need partake before we get going," she says, voice stumbling a little awkwardly for the first time. Despite the time, she's never quite sure how to say it. Being blunt is... uncomfortable for how it makes her think of herself, but being too casual about it feels so crass and uncaring.

Yuki raises an eyebrow at the other vampire, her red eyes glittering. "Yuki," she replies. "And sure, lead the way." She gives Dana a permissive wave with her free hand.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Dana leads Yuki around the university, checking on the usual spots that Leonard frequents in Elysium. Eventually she is directed to the Elysium's garage, a building across the street from the Castle, connected by an underground tunnel. The pair of vampires find the ghoul Leonard -- a redheaded, freckle-faced man looking to be in his late twenties, wearing slacks and navy blue jacket with a local rock band's symbol embroidered it -- whistling and loading some baggage into the trunk of an SUV.

Leonard notices the pair of vampires coming into the garage and straightens, waving to them. "Hey Dana, hey new kid. I heard it from the good ol' Marshal, I'll be taking you two to Springfield and providing" he raises his hand and makes air quotes, "'support' while you try to figure out what the heck is going on and where our best 'sucker got to. Are you two all ready to hit the road, or do you need to make some preparations first?"

Prologue: A Night in Court
Yuki turns her head to look at Dana. "He seems nice," she remarks of the shockingly human ghoul. He comes off to her as more relaxed, less intense than the vampires she's met so far. Less like he's wary of being stabbed in the back at any moment. Wonder how long that'll last, hanging around this crowd?

Turning to the ghoul, she says, "Looks like we'll be in your care," she gives him her best attempt at a genuine smile, though it inevitably comes off as a bit forced. "I look forward to working with you, then, Mister Leonard. I'm currently carrying everything I own."

Prologue: A Night in Court
Yuki doesn't seem much for casual conversation... or maybe she's actually young enough that she's not used to it? It's hard to tell. But that's fine. Maybe Dana will be able to break the ice more effectively once they're off on the road to possibly getting dismembered. That's bound to be a great bonding experience. It had been for her and Marcus. For a little while, at least.

Approaching Leonard once they've finally found him, Dana raises a hand to wave back, smiling. "Leo?" she asks, looking to Yuki. "Leo's great. He's one of the... less-dour people associated with the Court."

Turning to Leonard she says, "I dunno about support, but if you can keep the curtains closed during the day and maybe warn us if you see someone with an axe aimed at our necks that'd be good." Dana reaches down to help him with some of the luggage. "Hate to be the difficult one, Leo, but I've got a couple things I should pick up at my place. One of which may be an excellent deterrent to anything wishing to rip us limb from limb. ...And, before we go, I need to... It's been a bit since I.. fed. Probably better to do it in a city I know than try to manage it while we're getting settled in," she says, sounding faintly uncomfortable and embarrassed.

Prologue: A Night in Court
"No promises," Leonard says with a smile as he and Dana finish loading the car. "If I see someone with an ax and murder in their eyes, I might be too busy running and screaming to be of much help. But yeah, no problem, we can swing by your apartment before heading to Springfield." He doesn't comment on the feeding bit, perhaps having noticed how uncomfortable Dana was. "Hey, kid," he says turning to Yuki, "do you want to load that in the trunk? Carrying a sword around is not really inconspicuous, you know?"

Yuki hefts the small sword in front of her body, eyes glancing over the plain sheath. It looks leather, but she is reasonably sure it isn't actually. She considers for a moment, then lowers it back to her side. "I'll just put it on the floor of the car. If there's a store open near Dana's, I can buy a bag to put it in, instead."

Dana grins and shakes her head in reply to Leonard. "I might have something you can use, Yuki. Push come to shove, I'm dragging a duffle along anyway for clothes and less-subtle-solutions to problems. But Walmart should still be open if you need something specific."

"Works for me, boss. Let's get going, then, since Springfield is a two-hour drive away and we don't want to dawdle." With that said, Leonard gets into the driver's seat and starts the engine. After the two vampires get into the car, he asks Dana for her apartment's address and they start on their way.

Prologue: A Night in Court
For a while, Yuki sits in the car, marinating in the awkward quiet between herself and Dana. She props an elbow up on the door and rests her cheek in her palm, staring out the window at the new country and its lights passing her by. Once they are properly off-campus and into what she realises are the profoundly labyrinthine streets of Boston, the small vampire turns her head towards the other vampire and speaks up.

"Soo," she half-mutters in her South-Ontarionan accent, "What's the deal with the Prince and his friends?" She is referring, though somewhat obliquely, to the way they name themselves and behave, as well as to Dana's reaction when Yuki accidentally prodded at the facade.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Dana leans back in the passenger seat, watching the city as they drive. Lots of towns she'd passed through would be starting to close down and go quiet, but Boston's still going strong. Maybe not as strong as, say NYC, but it was lively. Probably part of what made it a good place for her fellow vampires.

At the start of Yuki's question, Dana turns eagerly toward her then pauses as she considers how to answer for a moment. She shoots a glance toward Leonard, then shrugs. "The Prince and the inner members of his Court think they're reincarnations of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table," she says bluntly, though by her tone she doesn't seem to find the idea overtly ridiculous. "So everyone refers to them by their name in that regard. King Arthur. Lancelot. Gawain. All those."

She thinks for a moment. "I've never seen anyone... not call them that after being corrected, like the King corrected your sire. I don't think it'd go well. Better to just use the names at Court. Besides..." Dana shrugs again. "We're vampires and, from what I've heard, we're not the only thing around that goes bump in the night. So, who's to say they aren't the Knights reincarnated? Wouldn't be the weirdest thing I've seen in the last few years.

"Mmm," Yuki purses her lips, turning back away for an extra moment of thought. She wouldn't have even considered questioning the truth behind someone claiming to be a reincarnated something-or-other...

"Well," she glances back over at Dana, "other than that... would you mind if I came with you when you go hunting? I don't exactly know the lay of the land."

Prologue: A Night in Court
"Oh," Dana blinks, clearly surprised by Yuki's question. She tends to do most of her 'hunting' alone and she never referred to it as that. "Yeah. Sure. Hmm." She tapped a finger on the center console between herself and Leonard. Usually, she'd hit up a couple of bars and clubs when she needed blood; it was easy enough to persuade people into a little alone time there. But with an apparent kid in tow, that wouldn't be viable. They should be able to work something out, though. It'd just be a little more complicated. "I'm not sure how you usually... go about this sort of thing. But we'll figure it out."

Company might be nice, though Dana is a little apprehensive. But Yuki has a point; it'll be safer if someone shows her around a bit, including somewhere she can do what she needs to do with less risk of any unnecessary injuries. To herself and to whoever she goes after.

She shakes her head and decides to change the subject. "So, Yuki, where're you from? Originally, I mean. I was born out in LA before I found my way over to this side of the country."

Prologue: A Night in Court
Yuki narrows her eyes at Dana's question, her face scrunching slightly, as if she'd just smelled something unpleasant but was trying to hide it, then looks away, back out the window. She lets out a quiet sigh, though still quite audible to Dana's vampire ears, her breath frosting the glass. No answer is forthcoming.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Dana blinks at Yuki's apparent displeasure, wondering what might have put the other vampire off. After a moment, it hits Dana and her hand slaps into her forehead. "That... That was stupid. I'm sorry. I didn't mean... I've moved around a lot, so... Never mind. I was dumb. I'm sorry." She lets out a long breath. "Right. Now that I've made an ass of myself and we've established that I'm dumb... what's something that isn't abjectly idiotic to talk about?" She ponders this for a moment, running a hand through her hair. "Hmm... So, when were you Embraced, then?" She asks it more tentatively, but still hopeful to spark up a conversation. She's curious how old Yuki was, but coming out and asking seems rude and she's been that already.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Yuki glances up at the suddenly-apologetic vampire in the front of her. She stews quietly for a moment, before finally replying. "It's fine. Not something I'm not used to." She continues to stare out the window, though.

"33 nights ago," she replies to Dana's second question. "As of this evening."

Prologue: A Night in Court
Dana frowns at Yuki's acceptance of her mistake and the reason for it. That's... kind of a terrible reason to accept something, but she doesn't quite know what to say and the other vampire's response to her next question rather distracts her with a whole new set of problems. "I-- 33 nights? Like... a month? Barely more than a month?" She sounds taken aback. Dana hadn't thought, even being conservative, that it would be so short a time.

So Yuki is just as young as she appears. And almost entirely new to this. Dana isn't entirely super familiar as to how the Camarilla go about their Embraces-- though she understands it's somewhat more forgiving than the Sabbat's favored methods-- but that kind of change is a shock for anyone.

"Do you... That's not a lot of time. And you've moved now as well. Forget finding you somewhere safe to feed... well, don't forget that, it'll be important... But do you need anything? Do you have any questions? It's..." Dana runs a hand through her hair, watching Yuki. She looks and sounds genuinely concerned. "I remember when I was turned. It was... hard. I'd be happy to help if you want with whatever you need."

Prologue: A Night in Court
Yuki waves her hand through the air. She presses her mouth into the palm of her other hand, cheeks puffing out as she thinks. After a bit, she drops her hand, turning on her chin so her mouth isn't covered, and replies. "It's... fine. I still have my fa- ah, um..." Yuki's eyes widen just slightly as she cuts off, the faintest tinge of red entering her otherwise preternaturally pale cheeks, "s, ah, m-mas..." she takes in a sharp breath, still a reflexive response to embarrassment for all it doesn't do anything. She takes a couple of seconds, then continues, voice unsteady "That's why I'm still with my master. He, um..." She turns away from Dana altogether, hiding her face by staring out into the furthest corner of the window. The vampire's voice comes out one last time, incredibly quiet, trying to hide the shake, "nevermind."

Yuki doesn't turn back this time, keeping herself hidden away in her corner, hoping the dim reflection in the mirror doesn't give away the red points falling from her eyes and running lines down her face.

Prologue: A Night in Court
Dana winces at Yuki's reaction to her questions, though she doesn't know entirely what caused it. Probably just the reminder when it was all still so fresh. God knew Dana'd been a mess when she'd first been turned. Partially because she'd been covered in dirt and blood and clinging to her sanity and fucking hell this girl is like 12. I should have a talk with that Benjamin fellow about what the hell he was thinking, turning a kid.

For the time being, however, having now made a child cry, Dana shoots a pleading look over to Leonard that says Everything I Say Makes This Worse Please Help Me, before looking back toward Yuki. Right. How to make this better? You can't possibly make it worse, but how can you make it better? "You know, a lot of people think being a vampire means you're simple-minded," Dana says abruptly. "I'd disagree, but on the other hand, we are all complete suckers." She offers Yuki a small grin, voice pitched to make the joke clear. Please let her laugh. Please, dear God, let her laugh.

Prologue: A Night in Court
When nothing but silence is forthcoming from Yuki, Leonard catches Dana's attention, "Hey, so I need to turn left here, right? I don't know this part of town that well, can you guide me the rest of the way?"

The rest of the trip to Dana's apartment is silent apart from the driving directions, sparing any more vampiric awkwardness. Dana gathers her things, including her limb-tearing deterrent. A backpack to conceal Yuki's sword is also procured. With everything set, all that remains is for the two vampires to go hunting, and then the group can hit the road to Springfield.
