Re: Session 2

Lucius:
"Hmm, that is an idea. But the corridor is a new challenge, we can take it after our rest. For now let us backtrack towards the main floor of the castle. Follow me!"

"Well, I have to admit, I do think it's important to try to destroy that evil cauldron thing..." mused Istvan... "Let's go see what happens if I try to tap it with my new mace..."

Istvan wants to use his new mace on all the things.

Re: Session 2

"Yes, let's start at that cauldron. If it hasn't already conjured a demon or some other horrific nightmare from the bowls of the abyss, I might still be able to bend the magics into something advantageous to us. No promises though."

Then, realizing Leilatha probably had no clue what they were talking about, Lazarus tried his best to inform her. "In the hall where we first met the vampires, there was a cauldron spewing red mist. Normally I believe its magics were supposed to be used to create or restore vampires, but when we last saw it I think the mist was attempting to take on the form of a demonic entity. I'm not sure how long such a thing normally takes, so there may be a sinister foe already waiting for us upstairs..."

Re: Session 2

You make it up to the ground floor safely, back into the room where you had found the secret stairs.  As you proceed from here you quickly notice that something is different from when you had come through before...

Whoever posts next, tell us what's different now.  You can suggest what it means, but no guarantee that your idea will be correct.  You can also follow up with a Discern Realities roll if you want to.

Re: Session 2

As Lazarus returned up the stairs with the others and they entered the main hall area once more, it didn't take the wizard long to notice something had changed. There was a thin layer of red mist flowing over the floor, cascading down from the twin staircases of the grand hall. Above, near the ceiling, he could see bats swarming. Presumably the same bats who had dared them to come to the castle in the first place. However, their wings had a strange red tinge to them now, making them look slightly... demonic.

"I don't like the looks of this..." Lazarus muttered to the others.

The quote below is for easy reference for what the main entrance area looked like when we first entered. I spoiler tagged it to keep things prettier.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
GM:
"Lord and Lady Segliani," the woman replies.  "You can give them your regard yourself in a minute."  She then turns to lead you into the castle.  The two men who had come with her stay behind until you have all walked in, then follow along behind you.

If any of you glance at the blood trails when you walk in, you see that they diverge to one single trail that leads into a side room.  Though you can also see that someone has hastily placed a long rug here to try to cover it up.

The servants lead you through a grand hall, where you see elegant twin staircases going up to the mezzanine, and through a wide corridor to the dining hall.  Torches line the wall, and a long table stands across the center of the room.  A man and a woman in matching white finery sit at one end of the table, facing each other.  There are empty glasses on the table in front of them, and the woman has just finished wiping her mouth with a napkin.  As you walk in, the servant announces "Your new guests are here, m'lord."

The two of them rise and bow slightly to you.  Lord Segliani motions to some empty chairs at the table (were those there before?), saying "Come, sit!  Have you eaten?  We have just finished our dinner, but we can have the servants bring you something."

Re: Session 2

The bats' eyes are red too.  The member of your party who was able to speak with them isn't here anymore, but even without her you can tell that they are behaving strangely as well (Leila can probably tell a little better than the rest of you - they seem to her to be in a bit of a daze, even as they fly around, as though sick).  When you draw near the bats start to fly in circles around you.  The mist follows behind them but more slowly, so none of you are in it yet.

And from down the hall you hear the servant from before calling out "Hello?  Is there someone there?"  She speaks slowly, as though she too is in a daze.

What now?

Istvan tries turning undead again...

(18:10, Today: Istvan Vanoson rolled 7 using 2d6+2 with rolls of 1,4.  turn undead?

✴ On a 7+, so long as you continue to pray and brandish your holy symbol, no undead may come within reach of you.)

The bats seem unperturbed, and the mist continues its slow advance.  Whatever they are, it seems "undead" isn't it.

Re: Session 2

Seeing that Istvan's attempts at repelling the bats was not being successful, Lazarus promptly pulled out one of his books and began leafing through it vigorously. They probably didn't have much time, but he knew he had read something in one of his books related to demons, red eyes, mist, and being in a daze. If he could find the correct passage, maybe it would give them an edge when dealing with what was happening. "Here!" he said, pointing to a page. "Now, does anyone see anything particularly useful written here?"

Spout Lore - Misty demonic daze. I left an opening in case anyone wanted to Aid in his review of the relevant information (would bump the roll to a 10+). I'll let someone else answer the servant if they feel like it.

21:48, Today: Lazarus Steel rolled 9 using 2d6+3.  Spout Lore with bag of books: misty demonic daze.
On a 7–9, the GM will only tell you something interesting—it’s on you to make it useful.

"The vampires were dealt with! Are you okay?" Lucius calls out, and despite his best effort, he does so meekly. Having defeated the vampires, he was not expecting a threat of such proportions awaiting upstairs.

He stumbles about, trying to help Lazarus, but the damned bats are not making this easy.

08:04, Today: Lucius rolled 5 using 2d6+1.  Aid.

Re: Session 2

The servant turns slowly, and Lucius can see that her eyes glow red just like the bats.  In the same slow voice she says "Yes, thank you for dealing with them.  But now that we are free we would like a proper host.  Not one already held by their magic..."  As she speaks, the mist starts to collect around Lucius.  It isn't doing anything to him yet but it doesn't look like its intent is friendly.

As for Lazarus, the reason no one sees any useful writings on his chosen page is that it contains only an illustration, no words.  Said illustration shows a demon forming from a red mist and eating a human heart.  You know it's human because there is a human in the picture as well, being held up by several imps, while one more imp reaches into the hole in the human's chest.

"...If I had a waterskin or something, I could Sanctify it and make holy water... that might work on demonic influences where just turning the undead wouldn't..." mutters Istvan, loud enough to be heard by his allies. (He's given up on turning for the moment...)

Re: Session 2

"Then I suggest we find some water," Lazarus said to Istvan. He continued, "I think our best bet may be to get back to that cauldron in the dining hall and destroy what is inside. If we destroy the demons' source of human hearts, it could weaken the magics pulling them to our realm." It was only a guess, but hopefully a good one.

Then, almost as an afterthought, he added, "Oh, and make sure you don't let anyone or anything pull out your heart. It would only make them stronger, and you would be dead..."

The mist swirling around Lucius begins to coalesce.  It is still more cloud than anything else, and it does surround him, but a vaguely humanoid shape is forming in front of the paladin - torso, two arms, neck and head and horns.  There are no defined features yet.  But you can still see its head moving as it replies "Don't worry, I will be leaving soon enough.  But not without some payment for the time I have been forced to stay here."  Its voice is low and guttural, starting like a loud whisper and gradually becoming clearer as the body becomes more solid.

Istvan isn't having this-- he's got a holy mace! He attacks the thing before it's too late! Maybe he can disrupt the thing, or at least hurt it first!

(14:00, Today: Istvan Vanoson rolled 10 using 2d6+1 with rolls of 3,6.  Attack the bad thing!

Flat-out success!

(GM, if you rule that the thing's not solid enough to be affected yet, please just make something good happen for Istvan k thx bye))

Istvan swings his blessed mace directly through the evil shape-thing...

The cleric's sudden attack surprised the paladin, but his boldness reminded him of his own Oath of Valor. This foul creature must die!

Doubtful of the effectiveness of his mundane sword, Lucius rallied to Istvan.

23:22, Today: Lucius rolled 8 using 2d6.  Defend Istvan.

GM, on behalf of Istvan Vanoson, rolled 2 using 1d6.  Damage.

The mace strikes the demon's arm.  There's definitely impact, but not as solidly as you would have liked, and it seems unfazed.  It tries to swat your weapon aside and says "Hey, cut that out.  You guys want to fight, we can fight, but this will go a lot easier if we work together.  You bring me a sacrifice, one who hasn't already been corrupted by the undead, and I'll be on my way.  What else are you going to do, stay here forever and guard me?"

Re: Session 2

Seeing both Istvan and Lucius' defiance in the face of the demonic presence helped to steel Steel's resolve. "You won't be taking any of us as your host," the wizard said defiantly, then turned to head toward the room with the cauldron. He assumed it was the source of the demon's power. Especially if it was filled with hearts as he expected.

Is a defy danger needed to get to the cauldron?

Yes, I think Defy Danger would be sufficient to handle evading the demon and its minions and running up to the dining hall.  Dex makes the most sense as the stat to roll, but I could potentially accept arguments to use something different instead.  Know that even if you do get away for the moment, the demon will still be hot on your trail.

Re: Session 2

The demon swipes at Lazarus as he runs past, getting closer to him than anyone else.  But you are all able to get through one way or another and make it back upstairs to the dining hall.  It's very easy to get inside since the door has been broken open.

Lazarus - The demon's claw gets close, but does it get close enough?  You can choose to take a light scratch (1d4 damage) right now but keep up with your group, or dodge successfully but fall behind a bit.
