In reply to DM (msg # 431):

My next chance at homemade pie will likely be Christmas. :-(

My wife is retired and is a fantastic baker, but she hasn't gone a baking spree lately (although there are several rum-soaked Xmas fruitcakes in freeze that I am not allowed to touch). Yes, I like Xmas cake!

I miss holiday baking. Didn't do pies -- except for pecan. I primarily did nut breads, mint brownies, and cookies. Those were my standard holiday gift to family. Then I realized I wasn't just allergic to wheat/gluten, but sensitive to it, and had to shift a GF diet.

Haven't baked for the holidays since. I just couldn't imagine baking all that wonderful stuff and not even getting to lick a spoon. :P

Down the road, I want to experiment with my nut breads and GF flour. I think they'd work well, being heavy breads. And then maybe I could also bake some regular loaves for gifts again.

I've experimented with 'flour' made by crushing pork rinds. With a mozerrela binder, it makes excellent biscuits. I bet it would work well for some nut breads too.

It feels to me like RPOL is the wrong tool for real time chatting.

Do players here use Discord?

I have, but don't. I'm usually here myself, though most people aren't. You all have jobs and families, I got RPoL. ;-) Disabled.

So if someone does want to just chat for a bit, just saying, I'll be here and usually respond within a few minutes. Gaming or whatever. I've been playing D&D for over 40 years.

That's an idea I wouldn't have thought of! Sounds like it would be interesting to try, though.

I usually go to a friend's for holiday meals. No local family. I get all the family drama anyone could want, then get to go home and leave it behind. :D

Birahu, it sounds as if you started playing back when I did. My mother had gone back to college, and one summer Saturday discovered some other students playing the game. She thought I'd like it, so the next week she took me to try it out. She played with us for a few weeks, then left me to it. I was thoroughly hooked. LOL

Google "pork rind flour recipes"

They are mainly for Keto friendly diets, but therefore are low-no gluten as well.

My mom still thinks she should have burned my books 35 years ago.

LOL My mother regrets introducing me to D&D now. She's into an extreme type of Christianity that gets stranger every year. But back then, she and I shared SF&F books and favorite authors. Even as recently as the Harry Potter movies, she thought it was good fun. Not anymore, though.

I have no regrets, however! :D

Makaniua, I'll look that up. Keto recipes are a good source of GF options.

Hewney if you look around you can find all sorts of GF stuff that is totally yummy! Celiac disesae runs in my wife's family, her mom, sister, niece, and late grandmother all affected.

The down side is how expensive GF flours are. But my wife has made some very tasty desserts from Internet-recipes.

Anyone dealing with a "satanic panic" over D&D at this time has my utmost sympathy!

In reply to Zaryk na'Liluth (msg # 443):

Yep, I've found a number of tasty things online. I'm lucky enough not to have Celiac, and aiming to keep it that way. I've been allergic to wheat and gluten all my life, but from high school on pretty much ignored it; I'm allergic to a fleet of things, so cutting one out didn't have much affect on my overall health. But aging, apparently, tipped the scales against me, and now the wheat/gluten allergy makes a direct hit to the gut. Thankfully, there are so many more easily available options for avoiding it than there were 20+ years ago when I last tried going GF. Most of those options are still pricey, though.

My mother thinks most all SF/F is Satanic. She told me it's because not enough people believe in the devil and such anymore, so now they disguise themselves as elves and fairies and aliens to get to people. Of course, things like the Hollow Earth, military bases on the moon, and a plethora of other bizarre SF-like nonsense are real -- and out to get us. I get warning, end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it calls annually. So far, the only one she's gotten right was Covid-19. :P

Woot!  Great news!

Cancer took my mother when I was barely 21.   Every time someone survives, or gets a good result, it's like being able to replace that nightmare with a happy ending, in a way.        We are way past due to find a cure for that.

Eye Dilation Stinks

Had an eye dr appointment today, and had to have the eye dilation thing .... Took hours for my eyes to get normal again, and it really had me off-kilter today.
