Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The party react with revulsion and rage. Murmuring a carefully prepared incantation Luc casts sleep upon the mischief of rats. Speaking clearly Ricky will chant "Stamp it into the ground friends, this could be the last chance. It's dragging us down now, this could be the last chance, to slay the beast. Slay the beast! It's killing our land, it's Killing our people For it has no pity, the beast is just evil." The words inspire even greater courage in the brothers and without hesitation they both charge forward, each attacking a different still threatening rat, maces sweeping across to swat away these pests.

OOC: Lucs sleep should effect four rats, DC 14 will save. Ricky's inspire courage gives a +1 to attack and damage. Ox got a 6 to hit, however Bull has gotten 20 for 5 damage. As both brothers charged their AC is 17 this round. I am really hoping a lot of rats are now sleeping...

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Three of the dire rats slump down asleep with their teeth still sunk in the corpses. Ox misses his target but Bullís blow crushes one rat so badly it can barely draw a breath and just tries to crawl away from the fight. However the other two dire rats immediately attack Ox and Bull. The one that Ox missed nearly managed to bite him but its teeth are barely stopped by the clericís armour. Bull is not so lucky. The rat attacking him manages to sink its teeth into his leg (3 hp damage).

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
This time it is Ox's swing that cripples a rat while Bull is unable to get to grips with the one gnawing on his ankle. Ricky neatly finishes the rat that was attempting to escape with his crossbow and Luc will cast shield in case there's more in store.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Ox and Bull perform a near perfect imitation of each other's performance from the first round of battle. This time it is Ox who cripples his rat while Bull misses completely. Ricky makes absolutely sure that Bull's first target will never bite anything ever again.

Bull's rat repeats its own tactics but this time Bull is ready for it and just barely manages to block the rat with his tower shield.

The fight is now down to this one last rat as the wounded one and the three sleeping rats pose no threat at the moment. Luc's precautions may prove useful in the near future but right now there is no sign of any other threat.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
In sync Ox and Bull will step into flanking position and will bring down their maces, though this time it is Bull who scores the successful hit. While Ox and Bull work together to one by one double whack the three sleeping rats Luc and Ricky will start searching the corpses. The group will allow one rat to drag itself away (the group may investigate a nest later) for now they primary focus is on the dead and the questions they pose. Are they the pilgrimage, what appears to have killed them, are they all here?

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The three bodies would fit the descriptions of the three men who went on the pilgrimage; the old priest, the retired smuggler and the fisherman's son. The bodies are several days dead and ravaged by the dire rats but some of their major injuries look like crushing blows that broke bones and skulls. The bodies appear to have been stripped of anything valuable too. There is no sign of any of the five women out here.

The group will explore into the cave, leaving the bodies where they lie for now. Ox will cast a couple of cure minors, Bull will cast one to bring Bull to full strength. Then the group will head into the caves, Bull then Ricky then Luc then Ox. They will be illuminated by dancing lights cast by Luc.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The cave is actually a short tunnel about 60 feet long and 10 feet wide, opening out to a rocky ledge on the south side of the mountain peak, which offers an excellent view southwards across the hills of the Abbor-Alz and out across the Bright Desert beyond them.

There is no sign of anyone else there but on one side of the tunnel, at the midpoint, there is a simple shrine to Fharlanghan. A crude note is nailed to the shrine with a rusty knife.

The note says:

We got ya wimmin! Yu want em bak bring gold norf to mowntin. Bi em bak. 20 gold 1 wimmin.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Now that the group knows the location of the five wimmin their path is pretty clear. They will camp in the shrine tunnel over night and then will head out northwards towards the mountain in the morning. They will drag the three human corpses a little way into the cave and will leave the five dead rats twenty feet away from cave to distract predators. They will risk not posting a guard in the hope that they'll all be able to rest and get their spells back.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The night passes peacefully and everyone wakes feeling refreshed and ready for the new day. The three corpses are exactly where you left them but the five dead rats outside show signs that they have been feasted on overnight. Two have been dragged about 30 feet away into a cluster of rocks and basically torn apart as the meat was devoured by some other predator.

OOC: Go ahead and select new spells for today.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The morning passes uneventfully and by early afternoon the party is starting to climb up into the foothills of the southern spur of the Cairn Hills north of the Shrine. You have followed a lightly-worn, narrow trail leading north towards the Cairn Hills.

About mid afternoon (about 3 o'clock) Bull is in the lead and follows the trail around an outcrop of rocks just in time to hear a shout and see half a dozen men scramble out from another rocky outcrop about 100 feet ahead. The six men scramble down to threaten a group of four gnomes leading a heavily-laden pony. The gnomes look like miners, covered in dust and dirt, and carry tools such as picks and shovels. The six men are all dirty and scruffy and wear an assortment of leather or studded leather armour. They threaten the gnomes with an equally mismatched collection of weapons ranging from clubs to axes and a couple of rusty swords.

"Surrender or die!" is the gist of their shouts.

The gnomes look startled and haven't yet had time to react.

OOC: See the Main Game Map. The closest gnome (g1) and bandit (b1) are both 80ft from Bull. The bandits have had their 'surprise round' action to move out of the rocks and into melee range of the gnomes. None of them have noticed Bull and friends yet.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The fledgling heroes of Pelor spring into action on the assumption that hard working Gnomes are being assailed by villainous bandits. The clerics will run to their aid, with Bull stopping at N20 and Ox stopping beside him at M20. Luc will move to R12. Taking stock of the situation Luc will focus his power to pulse from L/M/23/24 to hopefully knock out b2,3 and 4. Ricky will follow Luc, handing him the mules lead and coming to a stop at T12. He will call out "Gentle Gnomes, let us assist you in fending off these ruffians!"

OOC: DC 14 will save against sleep. The clerics are at AC 19.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Two of the bandits (b2 and b3) fall to the ground, fast asleep and already snoring.

The gnomes cry out in delight at the sudden arrival of their saviours. They grab their pickaxes and swing wildly at the closest bandits. The first gnome (g1) hits the closest bandit (b1) but he seems a tough one and is only lightly wounded. The last gnome (g4) also hits the furthest bandit (b6) leaving him seriously wounded.

The four remaining bandits shout angrily and fight back desperately. The closest one (b1) seems to be the leader and although outnumbered he doesn't back off. He stabs at Bull with his rusty shortsword but can't get past Bull's tower shield.

The other wounded bandit (b6) is the only one that manages to hit one of the gnomes but he more than repays the gnome that had hit him. His club smashes down on that gnome's head (g4), leaving the little miner crumpled on the ground at his feet.

The heavily-laden pony is obviously startled by the sudden commotion and gallops away about 30 or 40 feet before stopping near another rocky outcrop.

OOC: Main Game Map updated.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Luc will leave the mule where it appears it will be safe and will jog over to E18 to gain a better view of the melee. Ricky will stride thirty feet to P17 and with a sweep of his fine feathered hat will sing "They're men, manly men they're men in tights - Tight Tights! They roam around the mountain looking for fights! They maaaaaay look like paaaaannnsies, well they really are so lads let's put out their lights!" Inspired to greater heights Ox will step to N21 to flank with the gnome and both he and Bull bring their maces down in identical downwards strikes.

OOC: Ricky has used inspire courage which gives the brothers and hopefully the two closest gnomes a +1 to hit and damage. The brothers both got 16 to hit, if that's enough they deal 3 and 9 - a total of 12 points of damage.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Bull and Ox team up to knock the strongest bandit (b1) down and out cold, freeing their gnome ally to scurry back to help his friends while Luc and Ricky move closer to the battle. Ricky's song further bolsters the resolve of the two closest gnomes as well as his own friends.

One of the gnomes (g2) moves around to flank his opponent (b4) and hits him with his pickaxe, seriously wounding the bandit. The leading gnome joins him moments later to deliver another solid hit that leaves that bandit (b4) crumpled and bleeding on the ground. The last gnome (g3) swings his pickaxe too but misses the only bandit who still remains unscathed (b5).

That bandit finds himself trapped between a rock and a hard place, or a hardy gnome at least, and defends himself desperately. He thumps that gnome (g3) with his club, leaving the little miner moderately wounded.

The northernmost bandit (b6) is already seriously wounded and has obviously decided he has had enough. Without a word he turns and runs away northward along the trail and is almost immediately out of sight beyond the rocky outcrops.

OOC: Main Game Map updated. Bandit b6 has run 120 feet northward from square I26

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Fuelled by adrenaline the brothers rush forward to engage the remaining bandit. Quick stepping around the sleeping bandits Bull will move to K24 and take a swing. Circling around the Gnome gang Ox will stand protectively over the fallen Gnome on I25. Luc will stalk up the track, trying to keep the fleeing bandit in sight, but will only move up to 30ft to do so. If he can take a shot he will, otherwise he'll stop somewhere around H22. Ricky will move to J21, still singing about the manly men in tights.

OOC: Bull is a swing and a miss with 8, however at -2 for range if Luc gets a shot he got 17 to hit for 9 damage.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Bull and Ox move to surround the last bandit still fighting but they are not able to hit him. However, the three remaining gnomish miners make up for it. Obviously inspired by Ricky's humorous lyrics all three of them sink their pickaxes into the unlucky bandit. He falls to the ground bleeding heavily from three nasty stab wounds.

Meanwhile, the party's wizard performs a magic trick of his own. With crossbow in hand Luc stalks forward just far enough to catch a glimpse of the fleeing bandit who is already 130 feet away from him and racing northward along the mountain trail. Luc will only get one shot but that is all he needs to hit the running man in the back. For a brief moment the bandit (b6) clutches vainly at the crossbow bolt protruding from his chest before he collapses on the trail and lies there motionless.

OOC: Main Game Map updated. Bandit b6 is prone 120 feet northward from square I26

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Bull will clap the nearest Gnome on the back and congratulate them for so valiantly rallying against the bandits. Ricky will approach the group and praise them on their victory. Luc will collect the mule and bring it to the group and Ox will reach down and calling upon the blessings of Pelor will cast cure light wounds on the fallen Gnome. Bull will then look around, hoping that the bandits had some rope, manacles and/or saps on them. It is Ricky who verbalizes what the party are all starting to turn their attention to. "Well met good souls, well met indeed. I hope that we will be able to revel in this victory but first we must deal with the two our friend felled with a spell. Do you have rope or chain to secure these thugs, we believe they may know the where abouts of others in need." Ox will also turn to the other wounded Gnome. "I saw you struck during the fight, may I gift you the blessing of Pelor?"

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
Ox manages to completely cure the wounds of the gnome (g4) that was struck down by the bandits and the other wounded gnome (g3) is happy to accept whatever healing Ox will offer him as well. The foremost gnome (g1) trots off to fetch their pony and provides a nice heavy coil of rope from its packs.

"Well met indeed!" they reply. "We have never been so happy to see a group of men suddenly appear as we were when you fellows showed up! If not for your arrival there is no doubt these bandits would have taken everything we have worked so hard for over the last three months. You must let us reward your bravery to show you how much we appreciate what you have done for us today."

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
"Our friends, there are many ways you can help us. Our mission was to find eight pilgrims who were headed for the shrine of three horizons. There we found three dead and a note asking for ransom for the others be brought to this mountain. We believe that these bandits may know where the women are. Your knowledge of the area would be invaluable, so I ask that you help us question the sleepers, allow us the safety of your home while we prepare to face the bandits and support out attack. Together we can save some good people and remove a threat from these lands."

Ox will cast cure light wounds on the third Gnome then he and Luc will begin searching the fallen bandits, stripping them of their arms and armor. Bull will remove all weapons from the sleepers and then begin binding the better armed of the two.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The gnomes shake their heads reluctantly at the suggestion of a joint attack on the bandits.

"We don't know much about the bandits except it is supposed to be a pretty big band of them lead by a nasty halforc called One Eye. If they bothered to leave a note they must be serious about the ransom. If you want the prisoners back your best bet is probably to pay the ransom. You can think about clearing out the bandits another day when the prisoners are safe and you've got enough men with you to do the job right.

"We have been reworking an old garnet mine a bit further north for the last three months. It's completely played out now but we've got enough garnets out of it to set us up for a comfortable life when we get home. That is how we mean to reward you. We are going to give you 1,000gp worth of garnet gemstones to thank you for what you have done today but we are not going to stop anywhere near here and give more of those bandits another chance to take the rest away from us.

"Actually, we will even give you a map showing where that old mine is. Like I said, there is no more garnet there but there was something else you might like to take a look at later. Deep in the mine is a fancy carved stone door. We think it might be some sort of really old crypt or tomb. Whatever it is, we don't want anything to do with it, so you are welcome to it, if you are interested in that sort of adventure."

The gnome shudders slightly at the mention of the word adventure. He and his friends unload a small sack from the pony, then hand over 10 reddish-brown garnet crystals and a rolled up map.

Ox cures the wounds of the third gnome. Bull disarms and ties up both the sleeping bandits before they wake up again. The search of the bandits turns up 100gp worth of mixed coinage, with half of that coming from the strongest bandit (b1). His rusty shortsword turns out to be masterwork quality, although obviously poorly maintained. One of the sleeping bandits has a masterwork morningstar, which he never got a chance to use. None of the leather or studded leather armour is of good quality but should still be saleable in town.

Two of the bandits (b5 and b6) have died of their wounds already but the strongest one (b1) is still bleeding out (-5hp and counting down) when Ox and Luc get to him and the fourth one (b4) has stabilised (on -5hp).

"You speak wisely friend and you have given us much to consider. We are very grateful for your generosity, may the light of Pelor guide you safely home." Ox will attempt to use some of the bandit leaders own clothes to pad the wounds to the mans head though it appears to have little effect. Grabbing the sleeper who had a morning star by the ankles Bull will drag him ten feet away from the others and will kneel on his shoulder. Following closely Ricky will kneel on his other shoulder and give him a sharp slap across the ear just to make sure he's awake. "Wake up le petite shu shu, we need to talk."

OOC" Ox got a 7 on the heal check and Ricky has gotten 13 on his diplomacy check.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The bandit is initially angry and responds with threats but soon realises how vulnerable his position is and agrees to cooperate. In the end he agrees that he and the other sleeping bandit will deliver the party's message to the bandit leader at their camp, which is one hour's climb up this mountain. He doesn't care that the party knows where their camp is because he says it is such a defensible position it would take an army to dig them out of there.

They will be sent up the hill at dawn. The message is simple enough for the bandits to remember. The party has come with the ransom money (100gp) for the five women. No more than 6 bandits are to bring the women back down to this location by three hours after dawn then exchange the women for the money and everyone leaves happy. If the party sees more than 6 bandits they will "rain fire on their heads!"

Before selecting a campsite the party explores the area including where the bandits laid their ambush. There they find some additional equipment that the bandits left behind when they sprung their ambush on the gnomes. There is a masterwork composite shortbow (+1 Str), 3 shortbows, 4 quivers and 80 arrows, 2 light crossbows and 20 bolts, 6 large sacks (empty), 6 days rations in a backpack, 6 blankets, 2 x 50ft hemp rope and a 50ft silk rope.

They add that haul to the equipment already taken from the bandits, which was a masterwork shortsword, a masterwork morningstar, a shortsword, 3 clubs, 4 daggers, 1 suit of studded leather armour and 5 sets of leather armour. Plus the 100gp in mixed coinage but that will be handed over as the ransom money.

The party sets up camp in another rocky outcrop nearby that offers a good view of the ambush site, a defensible position and an easy escape route if things turn out badly.

Even with everyone taking turns on watch everyone manages to get a full night's sleep by the time the sun is starting to rise. Wounded bandit b1 died of his wounds shortly after the fight but the other wounded bandit (b4) had stabilised and survived the night, although he is still unconscious. At dawn the two unwounded bandits are released (minus all their weapons and armour) to deliver the party's message to the bandit leader.

After morning prayers, spell preparation and breakfast the party takes up position. Fortunately their precautions prove unnecessary as the stipulated 6 bandits and 5 women hostages arrive not much more than 3 hours after dawn. Nobody wants any trouble and the exchange of hostages and ransom goes off without a hitch.

The bandits retreat warily back up the mountain with the ransom money and the party and the 5 women they have rescued are able to head back towards Hardby without any further problems. Of course, the 5 women are not as young as Ox, Bull, Ricky and Luc - 3 are old enough to be their mothers and 2 old enough to be grandmothers - so the journey back to Hardby is much slower than the pace the party had set on the way here. In the end it takes them 4 days to walk back to Hardby although the last two nights had the benefit of sleeping in the barns at two farms that the women had visited on the way to the Shrine.

So by the time the party returns to Hardby with the rescued women it is a full week since they first set off on the rescue mission. When word gets around about what they have done they soon find themselves being treated as heroes in the town. The brothers' head priest at the church of Pelor is so grateful at having his two aunts returned safely that he sets off to talk to the Despotrix (the hereditary female ruler of Hardby, although the town is officially under the control of Greyhawk) to arrange a suitable reward for the four young heroes. In the end that reward is paid half by the church of Pelor and half by the Despotrix herself. The reward offered to Ox, Bull, Luc and Ricky amounts to an upgrade to masterwork quality for one weapon each, or armour and shield, which makes it equivalent to 300gp value for each of the 4 young heroes.

Chapter 1 - In the footsteps of others
The team are extremely grateful for the generosity of Despotrix and the high priest, they will humbly ask for three light crossbows and a heavy mace. The following day they will set about selling the arms and armor they confiscated and provisioning for their next mission. Their confidence boosted by the completion of their first mission they decide that they'll explore the crypt in the Garnet mine.

Over the next few days they will purchase a range of specialised equipment, wagons, horses and supplies. They'll spend an evening with the head priest discussing their plans to search the crypt and learning all they can from him about the undead, Then they'll seek to hire four mercenary warriors to guard the wagons by day and the campsite by night. They'll then plot a course which will take them up the farm road then well clear of the bandits fortress to get to the Garnet mine. They would very much like to bring the bandits to justice but want to get stronger before they even approach that mission.
