Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
A recounting of the hawk attack upon the Garnet mine ridge:
"And so from the sky struck a pair of vicious birds of prey, hawks the size of men with wings which stretched twice as wide. Their first attack had been interrupted by an illusion of walls of jagged stone yet they would not be deterred. While the first was struck by crossbow bolt and an arcane missile it did manage to slash the valiant mercenary Jaime before a concentrated volley brought it low. The second was even more vicious and greedy. Swooping in it struck the wizard Luc Fromage before turning its attention upon one of our poor horses. Yet this was its undoing for while it was distracted did we rally and chase it off with blade and bolt. As this harrier did try to flee a lucky shot robbed it of the last of its strength and it was last seen feebly flapping down to the forest below. Thus did the prey pluck the glorious plummage from the first of the predators and feast upon massive drumsticks. It turns out that with the right glaze near anything tastes like chicken!"

After the goose has been cooked the clerics will use the last of their magics using minor cures to restore 3 HP to each the wizard and mercenary and a cure light gives 4 HP back to the injured horse. They will then turn in for the night leaving the mercenaries on guard duty.

If the night goes without incident the clerics and bard will keep the same spells while the wizard will regain his two lost HP and will take the mending spell twice. While the others continue to work on ladders the wizard will thoroughly clean the ancient suit of fullplate with prestidigitation inside and out before using mending to restore the aged straps. It will be ox that will don Hemndels plate. The clerics will also use cure minors to restore the last of Jaime and the horses injuries. The group will then continue to work until they have enough ladders to descend the entire shaft. Bull will use the ropes and climbers kits to bear his weight while he fixes the ladders in place. The others will carry the pieces in and lower them down to him while he hooks them together and ties them to spike loops.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
After the excitement of the attack by the dire hawks the night passes peacefully and everyone enjoys a reasonably restful sleep.

The morning is spent hiking back and forth from the main trail with more poles and vines and fashioning the total of 200ft of ladders required to reach the base of the shaft.

After lunch the ladders are carried down the cramped mine tunnel then Bull starts fixing the ladders in place down the side of the shaft. By late afternoon he has 180 feet of ladders in place with only two 10-foot sections remaining.

By this stage Bull has entered the open space of a large cave. Shining the bullseye lantern around he can see it is about 70ft long, 45ft wide and 30ft high. There are all sorts of fungi, lichen and moss over most of the floor, walls and roof of the cave including dozens of larger fungi like giant mushrooms and toadstools - some up to 5 feet high and quite a wide range of colours including shades of red, pink, brown, purple, orange, yellow, green and grey.

OOC: Main Game Map updated, including a side view (not to scale) to show where characters are on the ladder as well.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
When Bull guides down the second last piece of ladder he will also bring down a sack of dire hawk offal. Ox will follow down to assist from the cave roof, with Luc on the section above him and Ricky on the section above that. Once he has secured the ladder in place Bull will hurl the bag of guts to roughly E6 and will watch to see if anything takes the bait.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
With all but the last 10 feet of the ladder in place and the party arranged at ten foot intervals up the ladder, Bull hurls a sack of offal halfway across the cave. By the light of the bullseye lantern he and Ox see a wave of movement among the mushrooms and toadstools on the cave floor, as though some unseen giant was striding through them and brushing them aside as it passes, straight towards the sack. Then the sack jerks up in the air about 5 feet above the cave floor, rips open and the offal spills out. The sack shakes itself violently, scattering its remaining contents, then leaps sideways and falls to the ground. One by one the bits of offal leap a foot or two into the air then mysteriously vanish.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
Bull will start to ascend so Ox and the others will all head up to. At the top of the ladder they will talk about what they saw and agree that there was definitely something roughly the size of a man and invisible that fed on the offal. They will go and cut some really long ribbons of skin from the hawks wings then they will go and get the last section of ladder. Making their way down in the same formation This time while Bull has the last section of ladder Ox will have two bundles of skin. When they are once again in the same position Ox will throw one bundle of flesh ribbons to F8 and one to F4.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
The same pattern of disturbance of the mushrooms on the cave floor is repeated. It starts from the middle of the cave (I6) and heads to F8, where the first bundle of flesh ribbons lifts up a couple of feet above the floor and tears itself apart before starting to vanish completely.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
Bull will carefully lock the last piece of ladder in place and will then make his way to the ground, closely followed by the others. It is their hope that the invisible creature will either be distracted by the food or if it comes for them the steamers of skin will give some idea of where the beastie is. They will try to deploy with Ox and Bull facing the creature and Luc and Ricky behind them.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
I'll allow accelerated climbing down because of the ladder, which means a single move is 10ft for Bull and Ox, 15ft for Luc and Ricky. Fitting the ladder in place is a move action.  Don shield is a move action. Draw a weapon is a move action.

Round 1: Bull fits the ladder in place and moves down to the cave floor. Ox ends up 10ft above the floor, Luc 15ft above the floor and Ricky 20ft above the floor.

The invisible offal eater spends this round munching on the first bundle of flesh ribbons, ending up with some of those ribbons dangling and still visible, as per the plan.

Round 2: Bull steps forward 5ft, dons his shield and draws his mace?
Ox climbs down, steps forward 5ft beside Bull and dons his shield?
Luc climbs down, steps aside 5ft and can make one other move or standard action of your choice.
Ricky just climbs down and can move into position.

The invisible creature charges at Bull or Ox. Before I resolve the outcome you can decide on any alternate actions you guys want to take. (By the way, who is carrying the bullseye lantern?)

That's perfect! Lucs action will be to cast magic missile at the eater of ribbons :)
(Luc is also the one that is carrying the lantern.)

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
Luc's magic missile shreds one of the flesh ribbons dangling from the invisible creature as it rushes forward, but at least that guarantees a hit on the creature. It doesn't slow it, though.

The creature charges straight at Bull, knocking his shield aside to sink razor sharp teeth into Bull's thigh, leaving him moderately wounded. The creature is still invisible.

OOC: 4hp damage to the monster, 7hp damage to Bull.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
And so the Bard begins to sing.
"Am I invisible? Will you ever see what you do to me? Breaking hearts in the dark so easily... Am I invisible?"
Snarling Bull shrugs free of the bite. In perfect sync with his brother Bull steps to K9 while Ox steps to K7. Bull raises his mace high and calls upon a feat of strength in the name of Pelor while Ox shrugs his shield onto his arm then both sweep their cudgels forward. As the two brothers swing Luc also calls for power and sends another magic missile into their foe. Fearing this isn't enough to finish their adversary Ricky will step back to N7 and Luc will step back to N9.

OOC: Bull failed his miss against invisible, Ox succeeded but got 11 to hit.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
Bull and Ox move to flank the invisible monster but don't manage to hit it.

Luc's magic missile focusses on another of the flesh ribbons dangling from the invisible creature and hits again, obviously wounding it but not yet finishing it.

The creature turns to stay focussed on Bull, biting him again and now leaving him grievously wounded. The creature is still invisible.

OOC: Main Game Map updated. Another 5hp damage to the monster, another 8hp damage to Bull.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
While the creature bites Bull Ox aims for the head attached to those teeth and tries to put a morning star in it. Batting his way free Bull hops back five feet and calls for Pelor to let him stay in the fight. Luc and Ricky both try to take careful aim at where the creature might be with loaded crossbows and let fly.

OOC: Ox has succeeded the miss chance, got 14 to hit for 10 damage. Ricky failed the miss chance, Luc succeeded, got 17 to hit for 3 damage. Bull has stepped five feet to K10 and cast cure light wounds on himself for 6 healing.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
The group will gather at the body and while Bull gives it a good thumping Ox will cast cure light wounds on his brother. While Bull performs a really thorough search of the corpse Ox will perform a quick sweep of the cavern with detect evil while Luc and Ricky will do a slower sweep of the cavern with detect magic.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
The body of the invisible creature slowly becomes visible about a minute after it is killed. It is a brownish-green thing about the size of a large dog. It has a large mouth lined with row of sharp teeth in the front of its body and a cluster of nodules on the top and four stumpy legs beneath it. It seems to some sort of plant creature rather than an animal.

Detect evil does not reveal any sources of evil at all in this cave.

Detect magic, however, does reveal several magical auras buried in the area in front of your ladder - directly beneath the 20ft diameter vertical shaft that you descended.

Digging down through a foot or more of decaying vegetable matter turns up the scattered remains of at least four humans - probably centuries old. Some of the bones are broken and all bear deep scratch marks that would match with the sharp teeth of the invisible plant creature. Their clothing is gone but a bunched up chain shirt and a chainmail hauberk and the scattered pieces of a suit of banded armour suggest that the creature had plenty of time to extract anything edible from inside the armour. A number of weapons are also found, some rusty or broken but there is a finely made rapier and longsword that just appear dirty, rather than tarnished or damaged. Among the excavated materials there are also a number of coins of various types, including silver and gold. There could well be other valuables in there but it would take a considerable amount of work to dig and sift through the decaying mass of mulch on the floor of the cave.

But Luc and Ricky's detection of magic points to the chain shirt, the scattered pieces of banded armour, the rapier, the longsword and a slender wand of black wood as all having faint magical auras. The wand is lightly carved with flames for the last 2 inches at one end.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
The group will bag up the valuables and Bull will carry them up to the campsite. He'll grab two of the mercenaries and with their help the party will spend the rest of the day carefully sifting through the vegetable matter that appears to be the guardians nest/grove, keeping clear of the mushrooms as much as they can.

They will have the mercenaries guard the camp that night then the following day if there's no incident they will take the same route they used to avoid the bandits to go back to Hardby.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
The excavation of the mulch on the cave floor below the shaft turns up all sorts of metal and stone objects that might have been part of the equipment carried by various unfortunate adventurers and miners over the centuries. It includes pick, axe and hammer heads, knife blades, pitons, a grappling hook, various buckles, a whet stone and even a small iron cook pot. Coins found are hundreds of years old but include 100cp, 290sp, 270gp and 50pp. There is a bit of excitement when Luc realises that an unimpressive reddish brown pebble he picked up is actually an uncut garnet gemstone worth about 100gp. By the end of the day a total of 8 garnets have been found.

The night passes peacefully and the trek back down the mountain is easier than on the way up. Putting the wagon wheels back on the wagons proves to be a time-consuming exercise, though. It is after lunchtime before the wagons are loaded and ready to roll.

Fortunately, the trip back to Hardby is uneventful and the party arrives back in town three days later.

OOC: The four characters can now level up to level 3. The four mercenaries have also gained sufficient experience (on top of what they already had) to advance to level 2.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
Back at Hardby the party will sell what they don't want and buy a couple of things in preparation to head out. They will buy a pearl so that Luc can identify the wand. They will also see if there is anything special about the copper crown. If possible they will help the four mercenaries become 1st level fighters instead of second level warriors. The party will pay them for their services and request they continue on the next quest to deal with the bandits. Some of the items up for sale are those being replaced by items the party of keeping.

For keeps
MW bronze full plate

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
OK, first level fighters instead of second level warriors.

The copper crown is basically just a stage prop. Looks good from a distance, polishes up well but doesn't stand up to close inspection. You could sell it for about 50gp or keep it as a stage prop for a bardic performance, such as a recital of the tale of King Hemndel the First. By the way, Ricky will get a +2 circumstance bonus on any performance of that particular tale in future.

When the wand is identified you discover that it is a wand of scorching ray (CL3, 17 charges, 40ft range, one ray, ranged touch for 4d6hp fire damage).

OOC: May I change their feats or would you rather I just add one more feat (the fighter bonus) to the two they already have. Either way may I give them the shield wall feat from heroes of battle? It gives you a +2 bonus to your shields AC if you're next to an ally who has a shield.

I'll let you change their feats. Lets say they do a week of intensive training with the Hardby Marines to retrain in a new and more demanding set of skills. It fits with the fact they have effectively traded in the benefit of their first 1,000XP by retraining from warrior to fighter.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
The party is happy to wait a week while the mercenaries retrain and will purchase them new tower shields emblazoned with the sun of Pelor. During that time the group will get coverings for their two wagons, more supplies and studded leather barding for the horses. Ricky will also spend the week performing at various taverns the tale of King Hemndel. He will also try to gather information about any other disturbances or threats nearby.

OOC: Ricky manages to earn 3 cps, 40 sps, 18 gps and gets 15 on his gather information check. The mercenaries will be taking tower shield proficiency, shield wall and toughness.

Chapter 2 - The crypt in the garnet mine
During the week Ricky hears about a local minor noble named Nerius Bootlum. Apparently he was attacked and robbed by bandits about 2 days east of Hardby as he was travelling to a gnomish settlement in the Abor-alz mountains, which is an area you have recently travelled through four times on the way to and from your previous adventures.

Apparently he is offering a reward of 2,500gp for the head of the bugbear bandit leader and the return of something that was stolen from him. It seems clear that this is a different group of bandits and not the same ones from the Cairn Hills that you encountered previously.
