Hey there folks,

Looking forward to playing with you all.

Dean here works on a ranch, mostly turkey but also a small herd of cattle.

A pretty typical all American sort of guy, the Visitors never sat right with him, and now he is feeling glad that he trusted his gut.

Honest and hard working, he's definitely under educated and under paid, but he doesn't complain much. I would expect him to bring a fairly typical set of rural, "country boy" sort of skills, and to be pretty robust physically.

Folks call me Roo. Ain't never taken to the Visitors, but I left my trusting nature back in Saigon, along with an eye. Don't take two to see that what's goin' on ain't right.

After my discharge I spent the last decade as a long-haul trucker, goin' east to west, west to east, back n' forth. That's all I got to offer the Resistance these days - whatever edge got me through the jungle worn off a long time ago. All I got left from the youth I gave Uncle Sam is one good eye and an understanding of what it really takes to survive in hostile territory: the bonds of brotherhood.

Orlando Bethay here is your local drug dealer, knows his way around some basic medical procedures (gotta keep your clients alive when they overdose). He is the local go to for many gangbangers who get shot or otherwise injured as well. Besides that I’m thinking he’ll have contacts, some “crime” skills, and then persuasion.

Appreciate it!

I used it once a long time ago with a similar character concept. Had a lot of fun with it but the game  died. I will be playing the character in a more humorous way, not overly silly by any means at all but expect him to be your typical stoner who is not fond of dangerous situations and would rather crack a joke in stressful situations than be a “badass”.

Unfortunately not for me yet.

You need to

1. go to Character Details, viewing the pc in question
2. click the Create Character Sheet link at the bottom
3. then check the User Editable box
4. then click the Update Character Sheet button

You have to do this for every player's character individually.

How detailed would you prefer we be with equipment?

And are we going with the %20 of total wealth for equipment rule?

So the remaining %80 would be for house, clothing, vehicle, etc.

I imagine Roo in particular might need some specific rules on vehicle cost.

Last minute addition. Here is the description.

Description:
Trailer park trash, they call me! Just 'cause I don't trust them. It is not paranoia if they really are out to get you, and the number of really smart people who I respect that have disappeared suggests that they are out to get us...all of us. I don't know how, or to what end, but they are not as nice as they seem. If I can just keep Peter out of their hands for a bit longer, we can work together to deal with them, but in all likelihood, I am going to need some help.

In reply to Natasha Zander (msg # 63):

From memory (I'm born in 1970) laptops were almost unheard of in 1983 (the first one was released in 1982 according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laptop) and wi-fi didn't appear until the late 1990s I think. I remember being at university between 1989-1994 and having to use computer suites to have access to a computer with online capabilities.

In 1983 you'd be lucky to have a desktop computer at home for personal use with a dial up internet access (requiring a physical connection to a modem and then to a phone socket) and it would be painfully slow. Saying that though, people who could program in 1983 seemed to be doing magic and a couple of floppy discs could hold a vast amount of information (or so it seemed at the time).

Hope that helps.

Re: OOC

Thanks Frank, I had a nice long post on early 1980's tech with images and I lost it all in a power surge...bah.

The Apple Lisa released in '83, first computer to use a GUI. It retailed for around 10 thousand dollars at the time.

Some small police departments still carried revolvers and backpacking gear was the big external frame kind, kerosene stoves and D-cell maglites. Maglite just went into business in '79, so even then.

It might be fair so say most of the world was in the 1970's with a sprinkling of the 80's in big cities and some cutting edge areas.

Re: OOC

Fortunately in GURPS it's all just GURPS$ so we don't need to worry about inflation (at least during character creation.)

Still a weird loadout for a drug-dealer, though. Grab a scale, some plastic baggies, leather jacket, drugs, and you're good to go.

Weird for a dealer? Sure, but that depends on the individuals mindset.  If he's a super paranoid type of person or is routinely on the run, his load out really isn't that crazy.  Although to the average person it looks bat-shit crazy.

Re: OOC

It depends on the direction the player is going in, sure, but even cops don't spend all their time on duty wearing body armor - and they're a lot more likely than a drug dealer to run into violence.

Body armor is heavy, uncomfortable, and a little cumbersome, especially in 1983. Plus, if you do get picked up by the cops, they're not going to let you go. They're going to look at you a lot more closely because you're obviously expecting trouble. Lot harder to ditch a bulletproof vest than a pistol or a baggie of pills if you get pulled over.

Depending on city ordinance a protective vest isn't illegal, but it's definitely probable cause for a very careful search.

Body armor is legal for civilian use, just depends on where you are and your criminal record. I own a stab proof lvl 2 bullet proof  concealed vest here in Texas, but it is illegal for felons to own.

Have to agree here. Not really concealed under anything less than a big jacket, and circa 1983, certainly stiff, heavy, pricey and prone to making a person sweat.

A lot of cops were still refusing to wear vests in the 80's in America for just those reasons.

Do what you will of course, just my opinion. Does it make sense for the character?

How are we handling it? Is there a player who wants to take a leadership role and we're steering the vote that way (making the voting more of a roleplaying element) or are we just PMing the GM with our votes so that he can collate the results?

Re: OOC

This is my, the player's, stance, not my character's:

Okay, so, the primary reason I've insisted that there be a leader is because of play-by-post pacing. It just a long time to have a back and forth conversation between multiple parties in this format, and if our resistance cell runs by committee, that means we'd be having that conversation often, every time we need to decide anything. The game will drag, players will get bored and drop out, and the game will die.

So we need a central authority to get input from everybody and make a decision. That's far far faster.

Looking at the set-up we've been given, I'm fairly certain the GM doesn't want to provide us with an NPC to fill that role. Ben isn't decisive enough, and basically keeps us in the same situation where we have to have a long drawn out discussion to get anything done.

Martin has his preferences, but as a player I just want one of us to be able to make those calls to keep the game moving and the pace fast, because face it, we're not going to get an NPC GM-Mouthpiece to tell us what missions to take. Deciding that is going to be part of the game.

Correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, TWKA.

Agreed on just about all counts.

Trouble is, I'm concerned that we are not going to get that far to begin with at this rate. Assigning Ben as an interim leader, letting us all get to know each other a bit during the first "mission" and then coming back down around to it when he wants to step down might be a good way to get some starting momentum.

There is no first mission, though, unless we provide one for ourselves. And if it's taken a week for a simple vote, I'd rather just elect a PC to handle the logistics, tell people their parts, so we can get on with it rather than spend 2-3 more weeks in deliberation.

Re: OOC

It sounds great in theory, electing a PC leader to speed things up. But it relies on a few things. First that IC people will follow that leader when they say 'we're doing this-this-this and this' and won't deliberate anyway (which given the characters don't know or respect one another yet will likely still happen).

Second that they stick around. The game has only been going a month and people vanish from online games all the time. If our leader flakes it's not going to be any quicker.

I still think Ben as a temporary leader until after the first mission. It gives time for the character to get to know one another and we can see who's solid.

I would ask that you either introduce a strong leader who will do all the heavy lifting for us - removing from us the logistical aspects while taking in our input - or throw us in the water without a flotation device and force us to develop our own structure ourselves. I would prefer one of those extremes to any half-measures. Getting a random group of PCs to come to agreement is nearly impossible and tedious to play out, so we do need that leader to make the final call.

I have no interest in a temporary "training wheels" leader. If the leader leaves, I'd like it to be because we failed to protect them or because we chose to depose them. Either way, our agency, rather than plot contrivance "tutorial level."

If you guys are willing to play through that - no copping out, no letting him being uncharacteristically decisive for one training-wheels mission and then deciding he can't handle it - then I'm willing to play through it.

Momentum is a good thing in my book, even under an NPC. In the story telling sense I think it could be nice to "sink the hook" first, get some time with our characters, develop relationships and personalities, find out who's invested and then come back to it. The alternative all too often is stagnation and the end of the game.

A PC leader would be preferred, and I'd be willing to do that if the wind blew that way IC. Kick seemed disinterested, Patricia offered an alternative and Dean jumped on that in an effort to move things forward as a team.

We can get there, it doesn't have to be right now and it doesn't have to be contrived. Ben threw this thing together, took the risk, I figure it won't hurt us to have him around for a little bit until we get our feet.

The game itself I've really been enjoying and when we were writing more IC than OOC I kept a constant eye on my sticky list.

But Patricia's reasons for choosing Ben were 100% IC reasons, no meta game around it. My OOC opinion is getting so fixated on getting a leader has delayed things more than just finishing talking through the plan.

So far it looks like just you and Kick, unless Frank makes an appearance.  So what exactly is the plan then?  So far, I believe you plan on locating a random V supporter, yes?  I believe the plan after that is to frame them for something, am I correct?

Re: OOC

I think that was more or less the plan, but I’m certainly open to rethinking it.  What do you think, Natasha?

If it’s just you and me for now, I’m thinking you’ll be the brains of the outfit, while I serve as muscle.

Re: OOC

Ok great, we still have Frank with us.  Is he joining this expedition or is he off on his own thing currently?

Finding supporters, both Youth Corp members and those of the general public, is easy enough.  Are you just looking for any old schlub or looking for a higher value target (politician, local business owner with cash, etc.)?  Also, what is the plan for framing them, or whatever the exact method here is?

Any young schlub. Plan is to identify their vehicle, buy a very similar one, swap the number plates one night, go do what we need to do to scout out the factory we wanted to scout out, then return, and swap the plates back. If anything goes wrong, then it gets traced back to the schlub...and things probably will go wrong with such professionals!
