Background:
Millicent Brooker was born in Johns Creek, GA, on March 25, 1900, daughter of Peter Brooker Jr. and his second wife Alice Cairns, their only child. Millie, as she was known in her childhood, was the youngest of seven children. Her father ran a large chicken farm, employing a large number of African Americans to do the actual work. When the KKK was reborn in 1915, her father (who was an abusive drunk as well) was an early member... and Millie Brooker was about to do something rather unacceptable in her social circles.
She fell in love with a black boy.
When her budding relationship with Douglas Taylor was discovered in 1918, the two of them faced the real danger of the Klan's wrath. Tipped off of a lynching 'party' forming, the two of them managed to hop a freight train heading north, eventually ending up in Chicago, IL.
Marrying shortly after their arrival, Douglas's poor education found him only able to get manual jobs; his skin colour not exactly helping either. Millicent was luckier and after reading a newspaper article about women officers, she joined the Chicago Police Department... just before Prohibition began.
Initially doing low-level neighbourhood policing - chasing shoplifters etc, she soon acquired the nickname 'Georgia' because of her accent and 'Southern belle' mannerisms. Identified as a very smart lady, Georgia was encouraged to become a detective and ended up working on an anti-gang force as bootlegging got big.
Trying to go after the gangs was rather hard when many of her officers didn't believe in Prohibition... and were perfectly happy to take backhanders. When Georgia refused to join in on the whole venture, someone decided to give her a Christmas 1928 present. Of cement shoes.
Fortunately for Georgia, someone failed to mix the cement properly and she was able to untie herself and make her escape. She then decided it was a good idea to leave town. Better still, leave the country.
Her husband and her emigrated to Britain, where after moving to the town of Romford, Essex, she set up a private detective agency called M. Taylor, Private Detective and he got a job working at the nearby Ind Coope brewery as a loader.
