Chapter 2: All Mine!
For all the supposed creepiness of the third island, the second island -- the one with the mine on it -- was rather uneventful. About a mile outside of town, the small band crossed a large stone bridge that connected the two islands. About half a mile down the beach toward the third island was the remains of an old, wooden bridge that used to connect the tower with the food island.

Unlike the village they were just in, the mines were well fortified. Stone walls twenty feet thick and thirty feet high surrounded a large tower, with but a single gate into each and a winding, well fortified path from outer gate to inner keep. From a distance, no one could be seen -- undoubtedly hidden in secret watch towers.

A young woman completely covered by full plate armor made of some dark metallic substance walked into the gate, but stopped just outside it. Embedded on her armor was an artistic sculpture of a dragon.

"Well met, Ale-Borne! Who are your companions this day?"

Chapter 2: All Mine!
OOC: Since untrained Knowledge skills up to DC 10 are allowed for everyone...

Knowledge Religion 17 on d20+2.

The green goblin with the prehensile tail says " I am Uluf the Unknown. May I ask your name in return?" Uluf seems strangely courteous for his race.

Uluf nods. "Any who might improve my...our knowledge of this 'Calling' that takes people away. I understand there is a male in the mines who has this far been unaffected?"

Chapter 2: All Mine!
The armored figure paused for a moment before answering. "Unfortunately, my parents are out and I know nothing about such matters, but my sister -- Belmarniss -- would probably know something."

She gestured for the group to follow, and turned and began to walk to the keep. There aren't many buildings between the keep and the outer walls, and those there seem to be tactical in nature. Stables (though, for what reason, one could not say) and staging points seemed to be the rule, though the occasional building with no obvious purpose also appeared. Wherever they went, small eyes peered through defenses, but quickly disappeared.

Things were different upon entering the keep, however. There were people of the smaller races rushing here and there, occasionally punctuated by one of the "bigger" races. They were mostly of the usual mix, though the addition of kobolds and the occasional goblin did not go unnoticed. Humans, oddly enough, were all but non existent.

Malax received some stares, but these stares were not the ones he was used to. Rather than "a monster at the gate", it felt more like "a nobleman visits? Why?". Upon seeing Uluf, one dwarf stopped in her tracks and, turned and hollered with more than a little anger.

"Fijit!!!" She turned to a scurrying Kobold. "Where is Fijit?!?"

Their guide ignored the chaos and continued leading the party where they were going, so whomever "Fijit" was would remain unanswered.

Before long they were in a very large, three-story library. Stacks and stacks of books, some undoubtedly dating back centuries, lined gigantic shelves.

"Belmarniss?"

"Here!" came a voice from the back of the library. Ilvaria led the small group to the source of the voice, where they spotted a young woman hovering in the air. Holding an old book on molds and fungi, the woman was wearing well-fitted robes that seemed to be designed more for comfort and practicality than anything else. Her hair was the color of refined silver, and her skin was dark as obsidian. If there was any doubts about what she was, her white, pupil-less eyes removed them.

She was a Drow.

"How can I help ..."

She stopped when she saw Malax and let out a frustrated sigh.

"Tell Mom I am not ready to get married yet!"

"Actually, they have questions about the Calling ... or something. Mom doesn't even know that he's here." A quick head-nod, and Ilya dismissed herself leaving the party alone with Belmarniss. Belmarniss kept her attentions focused on Malax as she asked her question.

"So, what questions do you have for me?"

[OOC: Permission to use the library should be rather easy to get, if anyone is interested.]

Chapter 2: All Mine!
Malax was surprised by the response to his presence.  Stares were nothing new to him, but the nature of these stares was.  Still, while different, it would not make him less cautious.  He was well aware of his earlier reception, and knew from long experience that fair seeming hid foul scheming.

Upon hearing Belmarniss speak, he considered her for a long moment, his amethyst eyes piercing.  After a long moment he speaks, his baritone voice controlled and even.  "I am not here for any bride."  He gives that a moment to sink in, before continuing.  "We are hear to learn about the "calling", and the disappearance of the males.  For you, we have only questions.  Though she does occupy some of his attention, she does not dull his awareness of his surroundings.  "May we use the library for those questions which you can not answer?"

Uluf adds "I think we all are interested in hearing about what makes your males disappear. I understand you have a male in the mines who is thus far unaffected? And what is a Fidgit?"

Chapter 2: All Mine!
"Well, the easy question first: the Calling. That really only affects her" she said indicating Galia, "and her sister. The twins are, as I'm sure you guessed, Changelings -- their mother is a Green Hag, which we around here call 'Swamp Hags' -- and their father a Human. Because of that, when they reached puberty they were hypnotically 'called' to join their mothers. Gevia decided to do so; Galia did not."

"The males disappearing. Well, that is some sort of powerful charm spell, that we know now for sure. My father has always been immune to it, but my brother just recently reached puberty and started to resist some sort of charm. I was able to help him for a few minutes, long enough to move him to the temple, and now we keep him in the temple where there's a permanent Protection from Evil that guarantees that he won't be controlled."

"We suspect it comes from the Hag Coven, but don't know for sure. The Kobolds guarding the ancient tower haven't been particularly helpful on that account. My parents have both tried to deal with the Hag coven, but ... well, they just disappear into the ocean and come back on land when the hunters have gone."

She floated up to retrieve some sort of book, and then floated down again.

"I'm surprised the Elder didn't 'temple up' yet." she said putting the book down. The book was about hags. "My understanding is that Gevia didn't formally join the Coven yet, so I suppose that there may yet be hope for her."
