A Hunting We Will Go (0.5.3)

The easiest Hunter base that the group knew of was Michael's old haven. Noah was currently deprived of most of his toys so locating any of the others would prove significantly more difficult.

So the group took the portal back to Sal's mansion (this is later in the day than the current thread there) and took Sal's car (again, Noah's cars were gone). Point Break drove and there was room to comfortably sit 3 more.

OOC: moving ahead. If anything needs changing about the scene, lemme know. If nothing changes, who's coming with Point Break?

Michael went with Point Break. He knew the Hunters could neutralize most supernatural threats, but his abilities were for the most part mundane. Being a former Hunter would at least allow him to be on speaking terms and not be immediately riddled with bullets. He also knew the layout of the area and where most of the sniper spots would be.

Noah was loitering in his mostly human form while knocking about Sal's place. There was no good sense scratching up his place. "This one is your show Michael. You tell me where you want me to be and I will be there. Overwatch or right next to you." He was extremely happy that Michael could take the spotlight and run on this one. The success of any teammate was good soup for his soul.

Michael scratched his chin. “Considering this sort of jamming tech is your bag, I would feel better if you were along in some sort of capacity. Mistral can be oversight ready to pull us out if need be. Fate can join as well if she is ready and willing. Her investigative skills would be invaluable for possible traps and ambushes.”

With Fate, Michael, and Noah in the car, Point Break took them back to the apartment complex that Michael had originally been protecting. It did not seem as though the original inhabitants still lived there just from a faraway glance.

The vehicle was parked a fair bit away in a location that would not draw sniper fire to allow the group one last chance to speak before acting.

Point Break checked to make sure his pistol was loaded, though he hoped there would be no need for it. He was the spitting image of Sal, right down to the tailored blue suit, and the way he wore his holster under the jacket. "Please, call me Sal. Calling me Point Break in public might complicate both my life, and his."

Noah leaned in to give Point Break a close inspection. Point Break was the last of two of his line with the death and revival of the twins. It was his best work to date and could fool even supernatural senses just shy of master or elder levels. "As you wish Sal. Has Sal been keeping you charged and well socialized?" He looked at Michael, "It's kind of a hit or miss that people don't know Synths need people. Being around people for them is like a spa day, sitting back with a good book. It's amazingly healthy for them."

He quit fussing over Sal. "Do I need to set up spells or anything? Normally my method of dealing with Hunters is to avoid them so no one gets hurt."

Mistral remained behind in the chilly hallow cave beneath the obsidian pyramid in the French Alps, but before parting with the others she said evenly, “I shall observer à distance, but I am never far.  Should intervention be required, I will be prepared.”  She declined to elaborate, but the cabal was well-aware by now that ‘intervention’ from Mistral could mean an unknowable array of impossible distortions of space.  At the least they could be assured that a quick escape was always available, and that hostiles may be made to simply vanish upon request.  Just before the others departed, she spoke a few cryptic words over Michael, Sal and Point Break that had no visible effect.  Mistral again declined to explain, as was her way.

Once the others were away, Mistral knelt beside the placid subterranean pool that thrummed with latent power, breath smoking in the chill subterranean air.  She withdrew from nothingness a small, rectangular gift box and regarded it for several long moments.  She then opened it and removed from within a long, thin strip of otherworldly fabric.  Mistral ran a hand along the silken cloth, then brought it to her face and bound it around her eyes like a blindfold.

Then, she set to work.

Point Break smiles, and says, "Sal treats me very well. He says that if he's a person, so am I, and since he's responsible for my creation, that makes him my father, in a way. The only downside is, since we can't be spotted in public together, that we don't spend much time together outside the mansion. But when I'm running his day-to-day public affairs, I get to spend time amongst all kinds of people."

Michael considered Noah’s question before responding. “You all can cast spells on yourselves but not me. No doubt they will have means to locate and disrupt magic or turn them on their casters. I should be the wildcard in that situation. They will have snipers and other Hunters in the surrounding buildings. I expect wards to be activated around the area to block off escape once we enter within a block of the area. Sal, Fate, and I should go in with Noah as back up. Should things go wrong, Noah would he in a position to disrupt wards and reinforcements from the outside.”

Now Michael, Fate, and Noah made their way toward the hideout (or to wherver they're planning on going). Much of the rubble leading up to this place had been cleaned bu the area surrounding the haven was still in disrepair.

A Hunting We Will Go (0.5.3)

As the ambassadorial envoy approached the site, Mistral reported her own forward observations over the earpiece, "The structure is occupied by some dozen personnes in different rooms, possibly innocents..."  She reported on the general layout of the building, number of floors and the locations of exits and potential lookout points.  "There are three individuals present with exceptional auras, and...  Bordel de merde."  The French curse carried a degree of surprise and dismay that was uncharacteristic for the normally unflappable Mistral.  After a heavy silence, she reported, "I am obliged at times to report impossibilités absurdes to this cabal, and this is one such time.  Better that you see this yourselves.  I am sending imagerie mentale in ten seconds.  Do not be alarmed."

After a count of ten a mystical view window appeared at the edges of each of the ambassador's sight, perceptible only to them.  The window cycled through imagery of three specific individuals, capable hunters by the look of them, followed by highlights of the weapons wielded by each: two swords and a spear, all ancient.  Mistral reported over the earpiece, "These are the individuals and their weaponry, which are notable.  Ascalon, the dragon-slaying spear of Saint-Georges.  Gram, the sword with which the hero Sigurd slew the dragon Fafnir.  The latter sword is... Excalibur.  Oui, the one you have heard of, and non, I do not tell jokes.  It would seem that you are expected, mon dragon."  The supernal HUD faded away, and then three figures faintly lit up in the direction of the hideout, colored outlines overlaid on the cabal's respective visual fields.  The colors seemed to highlight the locations of each of the three artifact-wielding figures in world-space, showing through all visual obstacles.  "I have highlighted each of these individuals so you may be aware of their emplacements at all times.  This imagerie mentale may be ended at any time, if desired."

The wielder of Ascalon was highlighted in yellow, the wielder of Gram in red, and the wielder of Excalibur in blue.

OOC: if anybody wants to resist the hallucinatory HUD imagery, you just need 1 success on Composure + power stat.  Otherwise, you can ask and it'll go away ;P

The area approaching the front of the building seemed to be fine. No traps or unwanted sigils. However, the same could not be said for the sides or the back. All approaches other than the front were heavily warded and lethally trapped.

It was hard to see anything else now that the outlines of the hunters with weapons of legend were imprinted on their vision, but Fate still managed to see movement in one of the topmost windows.

The group could now see the outlined hunters getting up and heading downstairs. It seems that they were being expected.

Michael shrugged. “A mutually beneficial agreement, at least a temporary one. To illustrate my point, why do you think I joined them in the first place? A Hunter joining a group of individuals that he had for years killed members of their kind? A follow up question is this: why would the army request us to deal with a supernatural threat that wiped out a whole squadron in seconds?”

You see you yourselves use magical weapons to complete your objectives, such as slaying a dragon…”He let that settle in then continues. “It is no different for me. What I have acquired, I use as a tool to continue my Vigil. There are dangerous creatures that care not for human life and wish to corrupt this world. We know in great detail about them and generally how to find them. Do you? My associates possess abilities not available to other Hunters, at least that I’m aware of. Power is tempting but is not an all corrupting thing. My associates, and I are committed to cleansing this city of dangerous supernatural threats. This is why our services were requested to eliminate a dangerous supernatural threat that even experienced well equipped Hunters would have difficulty dealing with. This leads to the reason why we’re here. I know you are not interested really in working with anyone not ‘pure’ human, but we do have information that could be useful to you if you are of an open mind.”

"Even with this set back it would take only a little time to find them. After all, you just have to look for the group of people avoiding the synths, and cross it with the missing synth reports."

"Hell, their synth tech could check the missing synth registry and get an area with that alone. And we can now counter their thread dodge trick that prevents us from targeting them."

He sent it along from his little lay low spot.

Mistral felt her magic begin to waver as she tried to pluck the image from Michael's mind but, ultimately, the spell held and she had her image. Then she began to set up a direct link to the creature she'd found.

She found him walking through the reconstructed part of town... but now she knew that it was a ruse. It was a sympathetic misdirection covered in an illusion that only space mages could see.

From there, a careful examination was required to construct a second sympathetic connection tracing the impostor back to the real deal. It was hard, much harder than many of the things she'd done... and would likely have been impossible only a year ago.

However, now she was able to trace the origin point of the illusionary ping back to a warehouse on the docks. He was inside so it was difficult to tell exactly where you were on a map... but it was someplace that was partially destroyed but still functional.

A pause, then she added gravely, "My search revealed concerning developments that we must discuss at a later time, away from this meeting.  I have seen une amie à nous, and the company she has found herself in."

A Hunting We Will Go (0.5.3)

Noah tilted his head side to side, "Of all of us you are the most experienced with hunters. It is to my limited understanding that they take every advantage they can. They don't fight monsters or beings able to rewrite reality without taking every tiny ounce of information and put it to good use."

"They also have a synth tech in there, so we will need to recalibrate all the slates. "

Michael:
“Well, what are your thoughts?”

After Noah said his piece, Mistral spoke, "Pardonne-moi, but I may have missed the striking of an agreement.  We have provided intelligence to these hunters, but what have we received in return?  I did not hear a promise to leave our allies alone to pursue cultistes démoniaques."  Mistral reclined easily upon a bench, looking as if she'd been there all along despite nobody having noticed her arrival.

After that discussion Mistral reported, "There is another matter of an unexpected discovery made during my search.  I have sighted Nefertiti, in worrying company.  She was accompanied by a large man whom I have descried before carrying la Croix Affreuse, a cursed cross of murdered synthetics belonging to an Earthbound démon.  He appeared at that time to be in service to that selfsame démon.  The loups-garous you encountered previously--"  She glanced to Michael, "--served as security for what seemed to be an audience with an unknown greater entity.  I was unable to pinpoint the location due to extraordinary measures of sympathetic obfuscation.  It was a feat to have witnessed this at all."

Mistral crossed her legs and added, "I am concerned, whether she is aware of the nature of these associates or no."

Noah frowned a bit as he sat next to Mistral. Even he with Omni sight couldn't see Mistral if she did not want to be seen. "Grey is a precious lil bean. She sent a ping last night but I couldn't narrow it down, so I know she is ok. When she sends another I'll be able to zero down a fair bit more."

He got quiet to listen to what Mistral had to say. "I pay to every higher power out there that she hasn't gone to the dark side."

"Do you know where she is at? If we can get a trace on her we will know where about to strike once we fully recover."

Mistral shook her head, "I deduced the location to be a dockside warehouse from environmental cues, but have been unable as of yet to attain its emplacement spécifique.  Extraordinary obfuscations are at play."  From the tone of her voice, it was evident that Mistral was quite vexed by this failure of mystical detection.

Sal was upset by the report, and Mistral looked to him and cautioned, "Take care in casting judgement too quickly, mon ami, for we haven't yet seen the full picture.  Our meeting with the hunters would be viewed with suspicion by many of our allies absent of context, or even with it.  This scene had the look of the prelude to a first introduction, the purpose of which is unknown to us."  She added, "Les loups-garous were not best pleased to see her, for what it is worth.  Also, her wounds appeared to be entirely healed.  Her new sire provides, it would seem."

Michael shrugged at Mistral’s inquiry. “They will never admit to working with anyone that isn’t completely human. The most we can do is feed them information and see if they bite. They won’t allow such evil to exist for too long when they know where to look. The fact that they let us leave without a threat or fight shows they at least see us as a lesser evil and of possible use to them. It may work to lead some evil to their doorstep if they don’t start acting.”

"As long as they back off and start fighting the bad guys we won't have to step up to the plate any more than we have already. Though I must confess I do want to know if they have any plans to route the Synths."

"I know Neko5000 was a highest bidder kinda programmer, Hempknight also. But it's hard to tell who got them jamming code. It's not something script kiddies can pull off."

He sighed, "Sal, is there any way we can get in contact with Nef. caretaker? I can't call her directly as that won't go well... at all." He was out of his element dealing with people.

Mistral answered evenly, "These hunters will not have infinite resources, so let us hope they overextend themselves."  She glanced to Fate and then added, "With information on emplacements particuliers where the Mysterium feels excess pressure, it might be arranged for that pressure to be relieved.  Unplanned vacations for hunters on duty to the Mongolian steppe, or the mountains of Greenland, perhaps.  Solutions non violentes."

Sal put in a call to Nefertiti's sire, but it seemed that he was to be foiled by some tedious vampiric intrigue.  Mistral sighed and withdrew a band of strange fabric to wrap about her eyes like a blindfold, then cast her senses afar.

Mistral sat up straight, going from casual to attentive in the space of moments.  Appearing to be observing something despite her blindfold, she reported, “Milo had good reason to miss your call, for he is en difficulté.  I suspect it was a hunter who answered.”  Mistral continued to observe, head turning slightly as if searching, then she added, “Twelve hunters, heavily armed and closing.  He is wounded and has perhaps five minutes until they have him… as matters stand.”

Mistral stated with cold confidence, “It is within my power to bring this situation to une résolution décisive.  The only questions that remain are the method and the message to send by it.  Sal, avez-vous secure confinements for multiple prisoners, should we require them?”

Re: A Hunting We Will Go (0.5.3)

Mistral considered Michael's suggestion, then tsked toward Sal, "I would not taint that lovely boutique with such as these.  You may greet Milo in votre foyer in approximately one minute, Sal."  With that, the blindfolded archmage set to work.  She performed a series of intricate gesticulations that were difficult to follow with the eye, while muttering incantations in a cryptic tongue never meant for mortal ears.

Elsewhere, the squad of hunters pursuing Milo were rapidly diminished as small groups quietly vanished, spirited away upon a supernal breeze.  Four found themselves stranded and separated in the trackless wastes of the southern Mongolian Gobi desert, while four more were marooned in an arid scrubland on the Patagonian steppe in Argentina.  Three more found themselves on an endless sheet of cracked ice near the western coast of Greenland.  The squad leader found themselves submerged and crushed in frigid seawater, too deep to even see the light of the sun far, far above.

Back at Sal's estate just under a minute later, Milo staggered into the foyer in a swirl of supernal mist, looking rather worse for wear.  His coat was gone and his shirt was torn and riddled with gunshot holes, trousers wet and stained with filth.  Mistral observed the ensuing meeting, but let Sal handle it and take credit for the rescue.  She waited quietly for a couple of minutes, then retrieved a pen and a small pad of paper from a tiny portal and wrote a quick note, which she folded in half.  Mistral waited a little longer, then carefully deposited the note into another tiny portal.

In the hunter's safehouse visited previously in the day, there came a sudden and rather inexplicable disturbance.  The waterlogged and half-frozen corpse of a hunter squad leader and a dozen gallons of icy seawater collapsed wetly onto a sofa in the safehouse's central living space.  Folded neatly upon a table near this grisly tableau was a brief note, written in a neat cursive handwriting that read simply, "Voscal.  You were warned."

Mistral allowed herself an enigmatic smile and reported to her cabal-mates, "This matter is resolved, and a message has been sent."

"I did not attend your meeting en personne and this squad was miles distant hunting a vampire, so there is no cause to link this to you.  We have left them with two new threats, and a riddle.  They must now wonder, which of their foes are allied?"  Still wearing the blindfold of otherworldly fabric, Mistral added, "The hunters have been given more to worry over.  Our objective was to relieve pressure on our allies, and we have done just that."  She added, "I invite them to try to come for moi.  It will be their undoing."

Once Milo arrived Mistral remained quiet on the sidelines, making no move to offer greeting nor take credit for the rescue.  She would leave it to Sal to serve as ambassador toward his own kind, and to extract advantage from it.

Milo's report on what led to his predicament was interesting.  If he had been searching for Nefertiti then it would seem that he was not involved with the meeting she had descried.  Nefertiti had not appeared to be there against her will, but Milo's driver being slain to bring her there did not bode well.  Mistral asked Milo, "Are you aware of your driver's location when they were taken?  It may lead us to who has done it."

Then, Milo reported that Dracula himself was enroute.  Mistral remarked drily, "Legends are not content to remain legendary, cette nuit...  Will he come in peace?"

Milo seemed a touch concerned. "Considering that he believes I am in danger, it may be in your best interest to hide until he has confirmed that I am not."

Thunder continued to roll in the east, a storm cloud gathered. Lightning streaked angrily through it... almost approaching the intensity (but not the magnitude) of the last major storm to strike New York.

Milo stepped out into Sal's yard and the group could feel the hairs raising on the back of their necks. Speaking became difficult as some sort of inaudible white noise began to interfere with speech...

a few moments later, that white noise could be identified as squeaking and flapping of wings. Thunder and bats filled the air, drowning out all speech as Dracula made his presence known.

The cloud sank suddenly as it made landfall, turning into lightning-laced fog and the bats crashed into the shore like a tidal wave, swarming the land with overwhelming force as a figure materialized from within. He wore a sword at his hip and crimson armor with a thin moustache and goatee, well groomed black hair, and an intense, predatory aura.

He observed the surrounding area imperiously as the lightning and bats began to disperse. Milo approached him hesitantly. "F-Father. I apologize for calling you out here. A friend of mine saved my life soon after I called you and I lost my phone-"

Milo's excuse was cut short as Dracula reached out with both hands, fast as lightning and pulled him to his chest. He wrapped one hand around Milo's shoulders and another around the back of his head for several seconds in a father/son hug before letting him go. "I would like to meet these friends of yours."

Milo nodded his head. "Yes, Father."

Milo began leading Dracula back toward Sal's estate. However, when Milo entered, Dracula stopped at the threshold of the door, waiting expectantly. Milo's eyes went wide as he turned to Sal. He didn't say anything but his hands were shaking slightly.

I will take precautions in case there is a misunderstanding before he realizes I’m not a threat. I haven’t stayed alive this long by being completely trusting of people I don’t know.”

The Hunter poured holy water in a three foot circle around himself. He knelt down and made several quick prayers of protection to various saints in preparation for the worst. His muscles swelled and veins bulged. Celestial armor covered his body with spectral wings in full spread behind him. A small dropper syringe of olive oil was produced from his belt to anoint his forehead. His right index and middle finger were used to draw a cross over his heart creating a magical shield that radiated from him. Just in case the phone given to him by the Hunters was enhanced somehow, he made sure to shatter it with the tip of his Mage Breaker sword.

Michael stood with arms crossed holding the sacred rosary in his right hand. The Hunter stood ready to stand firm in the presence of the Vampire lord.

Then, when the legendary vampire lord approached the door, the otherworldly form of the Mistress of the Ebon Tower materialized from nothingness, gleaming white-and-blue hair flowing on an unseen breeze.  Porcelain-pale, blindfolded, and garbed in magnificent robes streaming with the threads of reality, she inclined her head and spoke from blue lips in a voice that echoed across dimensions, "Bonsoir, Seigneur Dracula.  Your legend precedes you, but has not done you justice."

Even from the other side of the doorway, the group could feel the presence of malice and bloodlust... but not from Dracula himself. This feeling of existential dread was coming from his sword. You did not need special senses to notice it... even a sleepwalker could notice the overwhelming dread of the blade at his side.

Noah looked around and about as his ADHD brain was not something that could be pinned down by a collateral aura. Add in a perfect memory and he was looking at the background. "That is an unfair amount of vampires." He was chattering more to distract from Dracula's aura more than anything else. "Vampire spikes at the hip, minions with silvered weapons, I'd bet even a sniper or two in the weeds just for a bad day."

"You're here with an army..."
Mist's name wasn't Mina and Noah was John... "Blood and bone, the shadows have teeth and swords..."

Dracula looked at Noah from below his brow and slowly straitened. He still had not yet crossed the threshold of Sal's door into the mansion, instead waiting patiently for Sal to either invite or reject him. "I have made war over lesser reasons than the safety of my son."

Re: A Hunting We Will Go (0.5.3)

After taking in Dracula's aura of menace, Sal came to one conclusion: If Dracula wanted him and his friends dead, he could have his way whether invited inside, or not. Besides, what Kindred would pass up the chance to invite such a legend into his home? No wonder Milo had never mentioned him before! So, holding back a mix of terror and giddiness, he said, "Honored to meet you, Dracula! I'm Sal. Please, come inside. I'm afraid I've got nothing to offer you to drink."

Dracula closed his eyes briefly and inclined his head before stepping across the threshold. Closer proximity did not diminish the sensation of no longer being top of the food chain here, though he did not seem to be doing anything intentionally. "The honor is mine. You and your friends saved my son, so I would like to offer my gratitude to you all. I know it may seem an odd request, but might I have a glass of water? Fighting in the desert makes one appreciate it all the more."

After waiting on his glass of water (assuming you agree to bring it), he puts the glass to his lips and drinks, taking time to swish the water around in his mouth as one might do after having it dry out. By the look on his face, he seemed to quite enjoy something so simple. "Since you saved my son, I was hoping to learn more about his new friends, and of those who wished him harm."

Re: A Hunting We Will Go (0.5.3)

Sal gladly offered Dracula the water. He guessed he shouldn't be surprised that the legendary founder of the Ordo Dracul could drink it. "We are a diverse group, mostly comprised of mages, who have fought together for common goals. To my knowledge, those who targeted Milo were Hunters who came to town in the wake of the massive storm that hit New York city some time ago, though their timing suggests there may be more to it, as does the fact that they found Milo in the first place." A horrific thought occurred to Sal, and he said, "if they knew he was your son, they may have drawn you here on purpose. The cult have had no compunctions about targeting very powerful people through their children. Its as if the collateral damage itself is their goal."

Milo, you're welcome to pick a room, as well. As for your forces..." Sal was unsure of their numbers. His estate had about 10 bedrooms, each with king sized beds. There were dozens of folding cots in the basement, as Sal had anticipated the possibility of an emergency forcing all of his Halloween guests to sleep there.

"Bonsoir, Madame. You seem to have me at a disadvantage. You know my name but I have not yet had the pleasure. There are many legends about me by now, I'm sure. I've all but lost track of what people think I'm supposed to be."

Mistral was stunned into stupefied stillness as Dracula approached and spoke in that dreadfully fascinating voice, her eyes wide behind the blindfold.  She had been wiser than she knew to not to face this being in her new and frail mortal body.  She answered carefully in a level, otherworldly voice, "I am la Maîtresse de la Tour d'Ébène.  It is interesting to draw comparisons, but I prefer to trust my own judgement over ancient hearsay."  What was that dreadful blade?

It seemed that Dracula was in fact bound by the legendary restriction against entering a place without invitation, but thankfully Sal was wise enough not to refuse.  It seemed the lord of vampires wished to know more about those who had rescued her son, which she was not at all comfortable with.

Manofdusk:

He turned slightly to look outside. "My men and I were prepared to meld with the land for the day and begin our hunt at sunset but I would be honored to take you up on your hospitality for today. In exchange, I will grant you one favor for your hospitality and for saving my son. If it is within my power, I will help you as I am able when you need it."

Noah was having a ball of a time. He had resisted Vlad's initial effect but was dealing with all kinds of secondary issues. Noah was not a purely physical being though, so he reached out with that backup mind and traced the shared connection he always kept up with Mistral. Within that Mindscape he wrapped about her in his fog of a spirit form, putting himself in front to take the mental brunt of Vlad's aura.

She was a grown woman and could take care of herself, but this was Vlad. It is the nature of a dragon to look after his princess.

Re: A Hunting We Will Go (0.5.3)

Michael could feel the fear rising within him. Only his faith and dedication to his cause kept him from fleeing his protective ward. He took a slow breath to calm himself before answering. “Michael Lancaster is my name. As you have easily surmised, I am indeed a Hunter or former Hunter depending on who you ask. I was sent to this city after the massive storm as an advanced scout to gather information on what exactly happened and deal with any immediate threats that I could handle. During my initial investigations, I came to find that there were those that sought to protect the defenseless and scattered people of the city even though they were of supernatural origin. Initially, this was a werewolf who became a good friend of mine. He is dead now, slain while staying behind to buy time for myself and my vampire friend who is not currently here who healed me from the brink of death. Werewolves of a demon cult were responsible for his death.”

Rage and sadness welled up in him for a moment before he calmed down again. “After that, I encountered the others in this room who were of similar mind as myself in trying to mitigate the greater evils in this city. Through a series of events, I was cursed with magic and have been denounced by the Hunter association for siding with the ‘enemy’. I don’t blame for what they’ve done and what they tried to do to your son. They act on prejudice and ignorance of the bigger picture going on. They have not been enlightened to what I know. That just because you have supernatural power does not make you inherently evil or prone to it. It is what you do with it and the decisions that you make that decide that. I choose to stand with those who posses the power to fight the greater evil than fight them in a pointless battle. I do have a question for you if I may be so bold. You clearly came for war. Will the innocent people who want no part in this war be spared or will your army consume them indiscriminately?”His fist clenched tightly around his rosary awaiting the answer.

That is how war is waged."

Michael felt the stare, but stood in fear not of some mindless beast but of a angered father, something much more dangerous in his opinion. He nodded in understanding. “For some reason that is comforting to me. If I had children and they were targeted, I would probably feel the same. My faith would certainly be tested for sure in turning the other cheek. The love of a parent knows no ends and no depths of care for their children. I see you will do what needs to be done, but also that you will be satisfied once your vengeance is exacted. I suppose I wanted to know the reason behind the war and who is orchestrating it.”

"So what is it that your judgement says of me?"

Mistral's mask of placid composure cracked beneath the titanic weight of Dracula's presence.  This ancient lord's will was enough to conquer without requiring him to so much as lift a finger, and even an archmage was hard-pressed to stand against him.  She answered with a hitch in her voice, "I find you... dreadful and fascinant by equal measure.  I had feared your storm on the horizon would portend annihilation, but I was glad to witness your love for your son.  I never expected such kindness, and for that you have my respect."

A conversation between Dracula and Michael commenced, revealing that Dracula had come on a crusade to wipe out the hunters that had threatened Milo.  Without a moment's thought toward the consequences, Mistral offered, "I can give them to you, Lord Dracula.  Those who harmed him directly, as well as those who gave the orders..."  Mistral winced at her own weakness for not only capitulating to Dracula, but because she wanted to.

He stood and Milo accompanied Dracula to a guest room, returning a few minutes after he had settled in. "I'm terribly sorry for imposing upon you like this. As you can see, my father is... intense. Could I perhaps ask you to keep our family ties secret? Though I'm not certain how relevant that may be come sunset."

For some reason, Milo did not seem so much a respected Elder at this moment as he did a child following in the shadow of his father.

With a gesture Mistral caused the the archaic communications device to fall through Dracula's hand to land in hers.  She inclined her head in acknowledgement of the offer of future aid.  Dracula would make for a formidable ally, but at what cost?  When Milo led the lord of vampires away, Mistral's otherworldly voice was strained, "Au revoir..."

Once he was gone, Mistral faded into the margins of perception and arose from where she was seated.  Like a ghost she appeared next to Noah and put arms around him, her embrace neither warm nor cold and qualitatively inhuman.  Her voice filtered quietly into reality, "I could not deny him, even had I wanted to...  I have no love for the hunters I have offered to him, but they will not deserve what is to come..."

To Milo's request to keep his vampiric lineage a secret, Mistral spoke from nowhere, "We will not share your secret, but the war of blood that is to be fought over it may prove difficult to conceal."

Mistral snapped her fingers by way of answer, and on the wall behind her opened a round portal limned in bright supernal vapors.  The mystical gate looked out through a curtain of the ubiquitous vines that had overgrown New York City, and a few dozen yards further off could be seen the glowing lights of a coffee shop.  The silhouette of a thin, hooded woman could be seen approaching approaching the shop and entering.

The ethereal form of Mistral in the manor was gone now as if she'd never been there, leaving the arcane gate open for whomever of the cabal wished to use it.  Steaming coffees would await those who came through, or whatever comfort drinks they might prefer, if Mistral was aware of them.  Mistral's gaunt mortal form was there at a booth already, hunched over a mug of the steaming black brew, hood still drawn up.
