The purpose of this thread is to decide on houserules and to put together a party.

Proposal for 2nd edition

Starting level: first.
Character creation: Anything on the PHB works. However for ability scores we will run a pool. Everybody rolls 3d6 seven times and discards the lowest score. We put together all of the sets and you can choose any of the sets to create your character.
*House Rule 1: Cast using arcanist style. You prepare your spells for the day and can choose which ones to cast using each of your slots.
*House Rule 2: For Demihumans, level limits don't apply if you are single classed.

Resources:
*purple worm 2e rules: http://purpleworm.org/rules/
*For gold & glory: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/p...-Glory?term=for+gold+

Woot! Glad to be coming aboard, gang.

@DM, did you have a certain number of players in mind?

For the house rules, once the arrays have been determined ... does an array get removed as an option once selected?  Or could two players elect to use the same one?

Also, I'm generally picking up what you're putting down with regard to arcanist style.  That is, having a number of spells prepared and then using unallocated spell slots to allow choice in casting cast these prepared spells.

How would one determine the number of spells that could be prepared for the day?  Is it that every known spell counts as prepared, or is there some other number we would use?

With this variant, spellcasters still prepare spells as normal (assuming they normally prepare spells). In effect, casters who prepare spells are setting their list of “spells known” for the day. They need not prepare multiple copies of the same spell, since they can cast any combination of their prepared spells each day (up to the limit of their spell points). So, instead of having to Prepare three copies of Magic Missile, you just have to prepare one slot for Magic Missile, it gives you a lot more versatility in spells, and doesn't just limit you.

^^ Cool, got it.

So if I had two first level spell slots I could prepare two spells, let's say spell A and spell B.  Then later, the two spells I could cast that day would be AA, or AB, or BA, or BB?

No, not spell points. The first variant instead.

I'm thinking we could use one to three more players.

(And anybody can take any set of scores, even if someone else picked the same one)

Well, since the Array is going to determine what we can and can not play, I'll wait and see what other arrays we get added to the pool. Because with that 15, 10, 10, 10, 8, 8.

Paladin, Ranger, illusionist & Bard are all out of the question.

Fighter, Rogue, Druid, Cleric & Mage can work with these stats.

Ok, I'll make a summary of the character creation and include the score sets.
Let's start thinking of the classes and races you want. And a name, don't forget a name.

Also if you all want to come from the same city, different ones, what city to start from and if you want to do your travel to Hommlet the quick but hard way or the relatively safe but slow way.

Oeridian Bard (+1 Dex -1 Wis)

Charisma 15
Intelligence 13
Dexterity 11 (12)
Strength 11
Constitution 07
Wisdom 11 (10)

EDIT - Ouch, Bards can only be Human or Half-Elf. So.. Being the Bard is gonna be up to the DM and if he lets us use the Optional Racial Adjustments.

[Hard pass from me on the triple five!  I know I rolled it, but I'll gladly be yoinking one of the other sets]

I'm leaning toward cleric or fighter (but sort of want to hold off until I see the last set of stats ... that might change everything).

Character-wise, though, the seed of an idea is forming.  I think I'd like to have my character be a Flannae woman [name TBD] whose people settled in Elredd (just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Pomarj).  She'd be familiar with the humanoids that people the southern lands.  In between border skirmishes and slaver raids ... I'm sure that there was some small amount of legitimate trade that occurred between her nomadic peoples and the less civilized humanoids.  Probably picked up one of their tongues, too.

It would be a stretch to say that she is fan of the fell races, though.  Far more tolerant — of their boorish behaviors and raids and such — than the average Suloise though.

As a Flan, she'd have a darker complexion [eyes, skin, hair] and she'd be at home in a wilderness setting and less so in a civilized one.  She would certainly have a frontier spirit, and would have no problem telling you what she thinks about something.

Along the way he has found company at he local inn with a few others who have wondered in also with the wondering lust or just the need to explore and gain something for themselves. When one night after hearing traverlers talk about Greyhawk they decided that maybe a track to the Free City of Greyhawk would bring them something each wanted.  OS they formed up as a group, better to survive in number then alone and planned for their trip.

Just to triple check, which classes do we jave right now/what are we missing?

With the stats as they are not allowing for anything overly crazy I'm probably looking at something a bit more straightforward than I'd hoped for. I was considering a priest of Wee Jas but we don't necessarily have to double down on tue religious side of things. If a more or less straight Fighter or Wizard is needed I can deal easily (or see if I can still finesse a Fighter/Mage from Celene even if I can't get the Kit I want). I can do a Rogue in a pinch but it'd probably be some kind of Kit that doesn't offer all the advantages.

That works, Van would have been very eager to get out of Fax. If you've read about Fax, its likely if Dirk passed through there he would not have stayed long, on fear of getting his throat slit or sold to a slaver. Vandilo although raised very Xenophobic, that is the reason why he is not traveling/living with his family anymore, and has ventured off on his own. Because of not being as close minded as the rest of his people. Even though people still see him that way, at least until they learn more about him.

As seen below, Fax was a pretty rough place. Maybe Dirk had traveled through Fax and Vandilo had to help him out of a bind, the two met, got along and it was a chance for Van to leave Fax, that push that he needed.

--------

Fax
Population: 15,000
Fax is a broiling, boiling, oozing sore on the face of Flanaess. It is a pirates' den, for slavers, raiders, and smugglers. Hundreds of taverns and brothels cram the ill-conceived, ramshackle streets and alleys. There is no law or order to speak of. There is an old pirate by the name of Captain Skulljack who is the official leader of the town, but as he is fond of saying with a jack of rum in his fist, "…wear a sword, cuz anything goes." Fax has a deepwater harbor that caters to dregs and pirates of any kind, from all over the Flanaess. The bay is actually a great place for merchants of strong stomach and stout heart to unload their goods, legal or illegal, because Captain Skulljack has no organized system of taxation. Whenever he deems the city needs something, he takes up a collection from ruffians and pirates, or goes off raiding coastal towns.

Nice grouping of Cleric's so far. Its a shame that Greyhawk never did a book like Faiths & Avatars for Forgotten Realms, those Specialty Priests are nice. The Priest of Amaunator for example, Sunlords and sunladies cast all sun, law, and elemental fire sphere spells
as if they had additional three levels of experience. Though the gods of Forgotten Realms does give its Priests a lot more power than the Gods of Oerth does. The settings of magic/divine are different, so I guess it makes sense.

Some of the FR Specialty Priests are pretty tough. I think Azuth or Mystra's cast spells as a Wizard half their level. By comparison, Wee Jas gets access to a few select Wizard spells at higher levels.

DM:
The rooster so far is

Cleric
Specialty priest
Bard
Cleric/Illussionist

after missed the 16 dex req for illusionist, so character has changed to magic user/rogue, max points put into find/rmv traps and pick locks.

so we have:
cleric
specialty priest
bard
magic user/thief
and one other player

that look about right?

Re: Session Zero

Hey there. Nice to see your rolls are perfectly average as well. I have to admit that the totality of it all actually makes these some of the worst rolls I've seen. I think the biggest total was a 67, which is still in the average region (mathematical average for 3d6 is 10.5 which rounds to 11 for practical purposes, and we got 7 rolls and dropped the worst) while there was at least one really bad result.

Luckily AD&D isn't as dependant on stats as some other games.

was B2 Keep on the Borderlands part of the whole hommlet/temple of elemental evil/etc, or was that back in basic dnd. wow I don't remember, its been so long.
too bad play-by-post games like rpol takes such a long time to play, it would be really fun to go through the whole series, against the giants and the kuo toa, lolth, all of it :)

A sequel was released in 1999, Return to the Keep on the Borderlands for 2nd edition AD&D. The original B2 publication was generic in terms of setting, while the 1999 Return module placed the Keep in Yeomanry, making it a canonical location in the World of Greyhawk. The placement of the Keep in Greyhawk did not match many details in the sequel, such as several non-Greyhawk deities, nations, and peoples. At least two of the non-player character descriptions refer to details from the Mystara setting rather than Greyhawk.

looks like we need to discuss our group plans. i'm good with starting anywhere and heading anywhere. should we go along the coast and head towards greyhawk? or are we headed towards the village of hommlet? I can also start with anyone as well. hommlet sounds cool to me, I actually never went through that adventure, maybe we can find it and start the temple of elemental evil..?

Just point me in the direction of the adventure and off we go.  Hommlet is fine especially since I know of or actually remember very little of Greyhawk or modules - age and home brewed campaigns do that over time.

STR - 11 (40lbs)

Weight Allowance is the weight (in pounds) a character can carry without being encumbered (encumbrance measures how a character's possessions hamper his movement--see Glossary). These weights are expressed in pounds. A character carrying up to the listed weight can move his full movement rate.

Re: Session Zero

If I don't buy my Scimitar, I can afford a Donkey! That will just leave me with a Dagger for my weapon. But it might be worth it to have a Donkey. Especially since I have Animal Rapport: Gypsy-Bards are nearly druidical in their ability to associate with animals. They automatically gain the proficiencies of Animal Handling, Animal Lore, Animal Training and Riding (Land-based).

Re: Session Zero

That works, I can supply 2gp, then we can tie our backgrounds to one another, having known one another since the purchasing of our donkey!

Also, it might not be useful now, since its early in the game, but for Animal training. There are two options.

The Standard Method & The Alternative Method

These are both described in the Ranger's Guide. I am just going to assume that we are using the Standard Method, unless told differently. This also might come in handy later if we have time jumps, since animal Training takes time.

Re: Session Zero

Grimbold, where are you from? I know South of the Wild Coast is the Principality of Ulek, at Havenhill, which is a Dwarven City, The Lortmil mountains also has a few Dwarven Settlements. The Faerie Kingdom of Celene could be where our Elves are from. Rega looks like she is from Elredd, and that is really close to Fax where Vandilo is from.

So it looks like we could all be from somewhere in the Wild Coast, moving north towards Hommlet. Anyone from further south of Elredd would have to travel through both it and Fax, if you wanted to stay along the road. Eventually, unless we traveled all the way to Dyvers, we would have to cut across the Welkwood forest, we could have picked up our Elven Ranger from there. So that could cover Rega, Vandilo, Raphim, and Grimbold. Not sure where Dirk is from.
