For some reason, I was seeing that map as the entrance being opposite the gate and stairs, not in the same place. I take it we got through the gate then!

From the map I assumed we entered the gate and then the cavern  Or am i backwards and we entered the cavern and the gate is infront of us?

From what I have been following, we entered the cave, went down and discovered the gate with stairs leading down to it then that side passage.  Dirk heard running down from the entrance Hence Dirk is in the side passage looking out while playing hide n go seek.

Jack Frost can be persuaded for a little sunshine in winter in exchange for a little frost in summer  from what I have read and heard from this big plastic box with bright lights.....oh the lights....
