○ Black Jay's Cottage
Black Jay shakes his head. "I ran into them both along the road, when was out collecting one of my sheep about a week ago. They mentioned going to the nearby Temple and exploring it. I suggested that they didn't not just the two of them. Sounds like they didn't listen." he says. Black Jay doesn't know if Kossoth knows what the Temple is or he is just assuming that anyone in these parts know what it is.

"The Temple?  Forgive me friend my home is the desert to the South and east of here...far, far away so I do not know of what you speak nor why the two of them shouldn't have gone..." he questioned as to this mystery temple.

Black Jay looks at the man strangely and then speaks. "The Temple of Elemental Evil, you've surely heard of it, its the entire reason why Hommlet and this region is famous. In 566 CY, forces of evil from Dyvers and the Wild Coast constructed a small chapel outside the nearby village of Nulb. The chapel was quickly built into a stone temple from which bandits and evil humanoids began to operate with increasing frequency. In 569 CY, a combined force was sent to destroy the Temple and put an end to the marauding. This allied army clashed with a horde of evil men and humanoids, including goblins, orcs, ogres and gnolls, at the Battle of Emridy Meadows. Men-at-arms from Furyondy and Veluna united with dwarves from the Lortmils, gnomes from the Kron Hills, and an army of elven archers to face the threat of the Horde of Elemental Evil. The arrival of the elves from the shadows of the Gnarley Forest turned the tide of battle, trapping the savage humanoids against a bend in the Velverdyva where they were routed and slaughtered. After dispersing the Horde of Elemental Evil, the allied forces laid siege to the Temple of Elemental Evil itself, defeating it within a fortnight. The site itself remained. The Viscount of Verbobonc and the Archcleric of Veluna became increasingly concerned, and cooperated to build a small castle outside the Village of Hommlet to guard against the possibility of the Temple rising again. But as you can see, Rufus and Burne still have not finished the castle." he says with disdain.

Kossoth listened to the tale with growing interest as well as concern.  When the man came to the end he shook his head, ”That is very concerning.  If they had gone all the way there yet her possession appears in a cave a mere few miles from here in the hands of goblins.  I will have to think on this and let the others know.”

Shaking his head of the though he let his mind roll over other options as he refocused, ”But...please tell me of your sheep.  What do you know so I might be able to help...”

"For the last week, I've been waking up to find my sheep dead. I don't know what is happening. I've asked Father Calmert to come and see, and he says that their is an evil aura, but he can't figure out what it is. They don't have any wounds, no signs of death, I don't know what it is." he says.

Kossoth's head tilted some, "No wounds and an evil aura.  Mayhaps they are being poisoned.  I only think of it because I was bit earlier by a giant spider but the poison didn't affect me...but one doesn't need to be bitten for it to take root.  Do you know of anyone angry with you for any reason friend Jay?"

"No one that I can thank of." he says, and then pauses for a moment. "I do have a few old friends upset at me for leaving the Old Faith and converting to St. Cuthbert." he says. "I don't know much about poisons do you?" he asks.

"I know how to remove the glands from creatures...we used to pull them from scorpions in the Bright Lands desert to give to our healers who would make a salve from it to alleviate pain but how it works beyond pain, paralysis or death...no" he remarked as he thought about things and nodded.

"Faith is a powerful thing and has caused many a trouble, some see changing faith worse than betraying ones country.  I will see if the druids will be willing to talk to me.  First though let me take a closer look at the dead sheep so if they have questions I can answer them..."

Black Jay nods and the two of you step back outside into the rain and wind, walking over to the dead sheep, it clearly doesn't have any wounds or signs of how it died. "Its been dead since this morning." he says.

With it being dead since the morning something obvious might be gone but he checks the creatures soft parts...eyes, mouth and the like to look for strange coloring that might happen with poison.

While checking the sheep you check the tongue and inside the mouth, the tongue is black and spotted, a clear sign of Hemlock poisoning. You've seen it before, but never used to kill animals. Upon further looking around you can see that tuffs of Hemlock have been put inside the sheep pen. None of the patches seem to be growing naturally so its a sure sign that someone put it here.

Kossoth frowned and looked around in the off chance that whoever had done this was watching.  He then collected up the tufts of hemlock carefully so that he wouldn't poison himself later then he went to eat.  Looking up to Jay he finally spoke, "If you see more of this plant around collect it up just like I did right now.  Carefully my friend Jay.  I don't know all the ways that it can affect you so I'm wary of saying burn it...but a proper herbalist would know.  I'd say toss it in the bottom of your outhouse since if you just bury it then it might grow up."

Kossoth wrapped the hemlock up and tied the small bit of fabric he put it in securely, "Druids should know what this is and what it does but it doesn't mean they are the only possible culprit.  Any woodsman or anyone who spends much time outside could know the same including healers and herbalists.  So many people might know tangentially...but I will try and get to the bottom of it my friend."

Black Jay looks at the strange weed. "I would have never guessed that it was something they were eating. Thank you for your knowledge, and trying to get to the bottom of this." he says.

"My pleasure friend Jay.  It's the least I could do for your willingness to speak about the Princess," smiled Kossoth as he stood and readied himself to go.

"She didn't say anything else about her route to the temple or other thing that might help my search for her did she?"

Storm looksmfor Black Jay and tells him of his proposal to get a permanent caretaker for the cemetery. He says Tarim recommended him and storm hopes the man will be willing to do so. The cemetery will be refurbished and a fence erected to make it more cemetery like.

"Well obviously I'm not good at keeping sheep, Do I have a choice? I need to make coin to survive, plus I've dug a few holes in my time, I'm sure I could handle being a groundskeeper for the Cemetery, I already have the part, at least the kids taunt me saying as much." he says. Its true Black Jay does kinda look like a creepy undertaker. "I can help with the fence too, if the grass and weeds are overgrown, and its not also full of Hemlock, I bet my remaining sheep would love to graze on the cemetery grounds, ya know to help clean it up, what do ya think?" he asks.

"I think that sounds good my friend! Don't worry about the kids, I'll smack them if they disturb you! Your sheep can graze on the grass and keep the weed free! Just wondering can you start immediately? I'll let Burnes know that you are our official cemetery care taker!
As for your pay, I suggest I pay you a certain amount monthly or weekly and you can charge some silvers to the residents with relatives buried here maintain the graves of their relatives. They will appreciate you,"'Storm says. He further adds that Blafk Jay can build a small cottage to stay.

Black Jay looks around. "Well I don't have anything else to be doing, but its getting late, and the suns already gone down, I was going to sit down and have some dinner. I could go check the place out tomorrow. Its been sometime since I visited, the wife is buried out there. It will be nice to talk to her." he says.

Storm thanks Jay for his help and asks how much he has to pay. He passes Black Jay 50 gold pieces first for him to use. After that feeling satisfied, he will leave to update Burnes.

OOC: leave to update Burnes if necessary. Otherwise go back to inn. Please advise DM
