○ Black Jay's Cottage

Black Jay's Cottage sits right across the path from the Abby of St. Cuthbert. You can see a few sheep outside in the pin as you approach. Sitting on the porch of the small cottage is a ragged looking man, his hair unkept, his eyes opened wide, he looks like he is in a state of distress but his actions are calm, he sits on the porch smoking from a pipe. You have smell the pipeweed as you approach.

Black Jay looks shakes his head. "Here come around back and look, I had another one just this morning die on me." he says as he gets up off the porch and walks around to the side. He enters through a small gate into the gated pasture You can see four sheep in the pasture. He takes you over to a small shed and opens the door. Inside you see a dead sheep, it looks to have died recently, no marks, no wounds, nothing seems to be wrong with it on the outside. At least from the experience you have with animals. "I just don't know what it is." he says.

As you look around, and check the sheep, your skills of healing are more suited for humanoids, you check the creature over and you can't seem to find a reason for its death. You think that maybe someone else might be able to tell that knows a thing or two about animals, because you are drawing a blank.

As you pull out your symbol of your faith, and hold it before you, the spell takes hold, and you are drawn to the pasture where it seems a lingering evil is present. Malicious Intent, Hatred, Anger. You can feel the evil here, someone is purposefully killing these sheep, but you are still unsure as to how, or why.

Yeah, I will let ya use Detect Evil, I don't think you prayed for it this morning, but its fine.

Black Jay's Cottage sits right across the path from the Abby of St. Cuthbert. You can see a two sheep outside in the pin as you approach, a one laying on the ground dead. You see Black Jay running around his small house trying to get the shutters closed on all the windows. The Sheep are bleating something awful.

Black Jay looks at the man strangely and then speaks. "The Temple of Elemental Evil, you've surely heard of it, its the entire reason why Hommlet and this region is famous. In 566 CY, forces of evil from Dyvers and the Wild Coast constructed a small chapel outside the nearby village of Nulb. The chapel was quickly built into a stone temple from which bandits and evil humanoids began to operate with increasing frequency. In 569 CY, a combined force was sent to destroy the Temple and put an end to the marauding. This allied army clashed with a horde of evil men and humanoids, including goblins, orcs, ogres and gnolls, at the Battle of Emridy Meadows. Men-at-arms from Furyondy and Veluna united with dwarves from the Lortmils, gnomes from the Kron Hills, and an army of elven archers to face the threat of the Horde of Elemental Evil. The arrival of the elves from the shadows of the Gnarley Forest turned the tide of battle, trapping the savage humanoids against a bend in the Velverdyva where they were routed and slaughtered. After dispersing the Horde of Elemental Evil, the allied forces laid siege to the Temple of Elemental Evil itself, defeating it within a fortnight. The site itself remained. The Viscount of Verbobonc and the Archcleric of Veluna became increasingly concerned, and cooperated to build a small castle outside the Village of Hommlet to guard against the possibility of the Temple rising again. But as you can see, Rufus and Burne still have not finished the castle." he says with disdain.

Kossoth listened to the tale with growing interest as well as concern.  When the man came to the end he shook his head, ”That is very concerning.  If they had gone all the way there yet her possession appears in a cave a mere few miles from here in the hands of goblins.  I will have to think on this and let the others know.”

Shaking his head of the though he let his mind roll over other options as he refocused, ”But...please tell me of your sheep.  What do you know so I might be able to help...”

While checking the sheep you check the tongue and inside the mouth, the tongue is black and spotted, a clear sign of Hemlock poisoning. You've seen it before, but never used to kill animals. Upon further looking around you can see that tuffs of Hemlock have been put inside the sheep pen. None of the patches seem to be growing naturally so its a sure sign that someone put it here.

Kossoth frowned and looked around in the off chance that whoever had done this was watching.  He then collected up the tufts of hemlock carefully so that he wouldn't poison himself later then he went to eat.  Looking up to Jay he finally spoke, "If you see more of this plant around collect it up just like I did right now.  Carefully my friend Jay.  I don't know all the ways that it can affect you so I'm wary of saying burn it...but a proper herbalist would know.  I'd say toss it in the bottom of your outhouse since if you just bury it then it might grow up."

Kossoth wrapped the hemlock up and tied the small bit of fabric he put it in securely, "Druids should know what this is and what it does but it doesn't mean they are the only possible culprit.  Any woodsman or anyone who spends much time outside could know the same including healers and herbalists.  So many people might know tangentially...but I will try and get to the bottom of it my friend."
