"You don't need to worry about me doubting you," Professor Phenomenon said. "Or any of the rest of you. I know what you're all capable of."

Lincoln ignored the Professor and answered Kraken's question. "You probably remember me from TV. I did a lot of science-y stuff."

Re: Epilogue
After a short pause, the ghostly man spoke up again. "We were really effective as a team in there, despite not even knowing each other, with most of us coming into this situation blind."

"Here's the thing: I can't see this being the last time the world faces a crisis that's too much for just one or two of us. What if we stay in touch? We could come back together when we're needed...and we will be needed."

In reply to Doctor Wraith (msg # 31):

He rubs his chin in thought.

Im usually busting up meth labs...human trafficking rings....Neo-Nazi bikers...the occasional death cult...but yes, it would be good to have a team for tackling the big jobs...

"You're right: we did work well together. And I have sensed things on the horizon that will likely be beyond any one of us. We would need to come up with a way to contact each other."

Re: Epilogue
"Umm.  Anyone got a pen?"  She made a little scribbling motion in the air with her right hand, glancing around the group, and then into the cab of the smashed pickup she was leaning against.  "Oh, here," she said, plucking up a ballpoint from among the chunks of shattered windshield on the seat, brushing little flecks of glass off of it, tentatively clicking its button a few times.  She'd gladly scribble a cell number with a San Fernando Valley area code onto the palm of whoever wanted it.  (Or onto whatever other medium they preferred instead.)  "Don't go giving that to TMZ though, or I'll have to change it again."

Re: Epilogue
"Kraken is out of cell range a good portion of the time, and I'm not sure Doctor Wraith can use a phone." He stooped and pulled a baggie full of clamshell phones out of a tide pool, shaking the water off. "I had a colleague make some satelite phones that operate anywhere within Earth's ionosphere. These are dedicated - they can only call each other." He handed them out to everyone except Doctor Wraith - each was color coded to the outfit of the person he gave them to. "They're untraceable, independent of communications networks, waterproof to continental-shelf depth, and impact resistant." He turned to Doctor Wraith. "I've got a different idea for you, I'll tell you later."

"Oh, that's convenient."  Kara nodded a genuine enthusiasm, and peered quizzically at the device for a moment's study.  "Can it work with bluetooth or something like that?  Hard to take a call when you've got a sword in your hands."

Millennia looks intrigued. "Even under the ocean? That's convenient. How did you deal with penetration?"

"I'm not an engineer," the Professor said. "I had The Techlon build them for me, you'd have to ask it about the details. But they're mostly to enable us to get in touch when we're scattered across the world and something that requires our collaboration turns up, not calling in support mid-fight. Though I guess Sonic could probably show up if you needed him."

"Look at the big brain on Professor Phenomenon! Intriguing. I look forward to it." Before his death, even though he lived in a world with supers, Lincoln would have been shocked and suspicious at the sudden introduction of these objects. But since leaving his body, what he had seen and experienced made almost any event something to take in stride.

He turned to the rest of the group. "Well, it seems that unless any of us want to refuse outright, we're connected now, and in a way that won't compromise any of us. What do you all suggest as a next step?"

"Cool..." Sonic snapped back after going unconscious for a moment, no one noticed, hunger was setting in due to his body rapidly repairing itself. He takes the phone with his good hand.

"so, we a team now? like, this is the most awesome thing ever for me right now. Uh, unless anyone has some food like right now I'm a go.

Re: Epilogue
Drake hovered closer and looked at the phones.  One lifted into the air and floated slowly and clumsily toward it.  "Well, I, ah, might have some logistical issues with these?" it declared as it looked the phone over.  Indeed, the phone was almost a quarter of the little dragon's size.

"Not that I object to a teamup or anything.  I don't know much about technology and I'm always running across magic that's beyond me.  Some help on occasion would be nice."

"They're not really for emergency contact," the Professor said. "Since most of us will be scattered all over the place and unable to offer reinforcements or whatever. Just, you know, to set up meetings. Logistical, not tactical."

"We'll want something for tactical too, if we're talking about the possibility of us coming to each others' aid again.  But the Bat-phones are a good idea.  I'm okay with being called on again, if any of you guys end up needing a good sword hand."

Re: Epilogue
"That's easier. Just buy encrypted radios at your local tacticool shop, with whatever range you think matters. If you're in Jakarta and I'm getting thrown into a trunk in Houston it doesn't really help for me to call you - I'll be dead or the problem solved by the time you even check Google Maps to see which way you need to fly before figuring out that just hitting the airport is faster.

"But if I get out of the trunk and decide that I need help taking down this international crime syndicate, I can call everybody and we set up a meeting to discuss the problem in a few days."

Re: Epilogue
"Well I hope you get out of the trunk."  Kara flashed her dazzler of a grin again.  "I'll definitely take you guys' calls, you seem like way less a bunch of prima donnas than my regular team."  An abrupt fwoosh, and a pair of enormous white feathered wings were suddenly present, arching back from her shoulder blades.  She leapt into the air with a WHHUMPH WHHUMPH of her wings, whirling up a small cloud of dust and debris in her wake.  "See ya laters, Liberators," she called back as she took to the sky.

Re: Epilogue
Brian watched as the warrior woman sprouted angel wings and soared away.

"Well that comes in handy, doesn't it?"

He slides phone into his jeans pocket and starts walking towards the motorcycle he parked out of the range of the security cameras before sneaking into the facility.

Where would he go now, he thought. Back to the remains of the family estate? It should have stopped smoldering by now. Might make a good spot for a base, he thought. He'd have to broach that subject later.

"Have fun, fellas."

He mounted his Harley and revved the engine. As he tore off he wondered which of the seafood buffets by the dock he could get into without being recognized. That bestial hunger's a bitch, but he's sealed enough wounds to grow a clone over the past 24 and that protein's gotta come from somewhere.

Afterwards he'd hit one of those darker clubs where they part the velvet rope for him when they see him ride up. It's nice to know that the freaks appreciate their own.

Re: Epilogue
Doctor Wraith watched Valkyrie go for a moment. "The Liberators. I like the sound of that."

He smiled. "Let's go with that: The Liberators. Because, you know, 'The Misfit Toys' is probably under copyright." He grinned, and began fading. His comrades were reminded of The Cheshire Cat, though Wraith didn't leave a smile behind. Then he spoke again, his voice coming out of empty air: "Thanks for what you all did here today, folks. Until we meet again."
