I'm still alive. This is the first day I've been able to get the energy to actually log in. I got Covid, but it's not as bad as it could be due to vaccination. I should be back to regular posting in week.

No worries! Rest up and take care of yourself. The vaccination helps a lot from what I've heard, but its still a rough bug even then.

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

So first off I wanna say that I've been doing well for over a week, but girlfriend and kids got sick as well. They are fine, in fact they did better than I did. My dad, who was helping us out during the time also got it though, and it got him really bad. Last Friday I got a call during work saying that his neighbors called the ambulance for him after he wasn't answering any calls or knocks. I had talked to him that morning, but somewhere in between he fell asleep and he didn't wake back up. After trying to resuscitate him at the hospital that night, we sadly lost him Saturday morning. I have been spending most of this week putting his affairs in order.

Because of everything going on I am putting this on hiatus for now, and will probably wait for after the new year to pick it back up. I didn't want to leave you guys hanging, and making this post wasn't an inconvenience or anything so I don't want you guys to worry about that. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up of what happened and why I won't be posting for awhile.

Appreciate the update, but no worries here. Sorry for your loss and completely understandable that RL is needing more attention right now than the game. It'll be here when things settle and you're ready to get back to it. Hopefully things go well going forward!

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

Currently planning on restarting this game. It's gonna take a little bit since I'm revamping the setting, but it's mostly for gameplay reasons.

Instead of having you guys spread out across the continent, forcing me to make several intro scenarios, I plan to have you all as the foundation of a secret cabal. You will already know one another, and already be working toward a similar goal (essentially take over the Kingdom).

Also I wanna make some adjustments to the setting, like have other Dragons still active instead of most of them being wiped out in the Age of Fire. I intend the main reason the Dragons lost the war against mortals to be that they couldn't work together (instead of going crazy), and were actively fighting one another while fighting the Mortals. You guys working together would be the main anomaly and the source of your advantage over your fellow kin, and the Mortals.

Anyone who wants to return please chime in below. You can keep your character mostly intact (if you wish). Just some adjustments to backgrounds since yall will know each other form the start.

I'd be happy to. It'll require some adjustment to Nu's general attitude toward the others, but I can work with that.

[Private to GM: I was also interested in the False Gods idea you had started. Yell in my general direction if you ever go with that!]

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

Thank you guys for patiently waiting. I'm gonna give it a week before I do any major changes to the game. A lot of stuff will be archived at that point. Those who return will retain access to their character sheets. You can PM me any adjustments you wish to make. The soonest the game will probably up and running will be August with the amount of changes I plan to make, along with possible need to recruit new players (I still want a player count of 4-5).

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

Good to see you back. By 7/27 any player who hasn't returned will be dropped from the game.

This week the game will go through a face-lift of sort. Current plans include:

  • Rewrite the Game Info
  • Archive Current OOC chat, and begin a new OOC chat focused on the new direction
  • Rewrite and condense current setting info
  • Restart Recruiting if last player does not return
  • Grant time for players to readjust their character sheet

Main changes to the setting will be to increase the number of original Archdragons in order to give players more diverse choices in genealogy. This will give you more varied background so you aren't all just brothers/sisters from one freaking island.

Restructure the Dragon life cycle: Egg > Dragonling > Dragon > High Dragon > Elder Dragon > Archdragon. You don't gain intelligence until the High Dragon point which can take centuries to achieve and depends on factors besides age (the Dragon to High Dragon change is more like an epiphany or enlightenment). You all are currently at the High Dragon point in your lives, and as you gain levels you can enter the Elder Dragon period. At maximum level and story allowing you can achieve the forms of Archdragons.

I plan to make Nastrondir more deadly, and monster dense. Dragons are the strongest scions of the Lindwyrm, but it's body gave birth to thousands of monsters that terrorize the land. The Mortal races relied on Draconic protection during the 1st Age, and in the 2nd Age they rely on Divine Armaments, but as time moves on the power of these relics continue to diminish which is causing civilization across the world to retract and decay. Settlements on the edge of nations continue to fall each day as their defenses fail and the wild and dangerous flora/fauna of Nastrondir moves to reclaim territory.

Finally I want you guys to start introducing your characters to each other OOC so that yall can start forming ideas of how your organization is structured. I intend to remake the setting info to only include info that is relevant to the region you guys start in (which is the same region we began in 2021). I want you guys to utilize the info you already have for this, and I'll make adjustments here and there for things that changed (such as the timeline being rolled back a few years).

In reality I'm trying to see what portions that you guys liked so that they can survive the rewrite in some form.

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

In reply to Nu (msg # 120):

I’m still at work so forgive grammar. I can’t get into mechanics yet, but High Dragon = Early-Mid Game, Elder Dragon = Late Game, Archdragon = Post Game (Do you guys wanna destroy Heaven?)

So Dragonlings and Dragons are basically animals. They can be intelligent and cunning, but they are driven by instinct. High Dragons are the first portion of the Dragon’s lifecycle where they are actually sapient. Now this fact is what allows them to become Elder Dragons, because they can actually now pick and choose how their powers manifest. Dragons “evolve” their powers, but until they are High Dragons that process is outside of their control. A Dragon that hunts in the Sea for food will evolve the Sea Word to help them hunt better. A High Dragon who is interested in exploring the Ocean will choose to Evolve the Sea Word to make their job easier. The difference is choice, the High Dragon will force the change, The Dragon it just happens due to exposure.

Elder Dragons are High Dragons who have “finished their build” so to speak. Elder Dragons no longer care about going into Metamorphosis (leveling up) and instead worry more about maintaining territory and subjects. This is the Dragon version of Apothesis, so just imagine them as more concerned with Dominion then anything else, since very few things can take them head on. It’s less an age thing and more about experience, both literally (gameplay wise) and figuratively (setting wise).

Archdragons are Dragons who have become similar to the Lindwyrm. No Archdragon exists in Nastrondir as the Age of Fire began as a battle between them due to Nastrondir becoming too small. The Archdragons who survived chose to leave Nastrondir, and create Nests in the Heavenly Realms, where they theoretically either died, or continue to terrorize the Gods/Angels to this day.

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

In reply to GM (msg # 121):

There is also magical resource that Dragon’s consume to trigger their level ups. It’s called Seithr and is basically life force. Dragons are cannibals by nature and the most Seithr one can get is consuming another Dragon. Seithr is in all living things in Nastrondir tho, so you can get it from killing stuff. Mortals are mostly immune to this tho cuz they are tainted by Aeithr (Divine Energy) which Dragons can’t consume, which is why Mortals are usually enslaved rather than eaten. This stuff will pop up in the new lore.

Edit: Mortals are “tainted” by Aeithr, they are still mostly made up of Seithr tho, but the Aeithr stops anything from being absorbed, it’s like eating spoiled food and throwing up.

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

I hope that we can still get Dominion from mortal cults though...

Anyway! As before, Tanith de Severine is a merchant noble living by the sea, and still claims to have been a fisherman's daughter before hitting it big. Nothing weird about her at all, except that she consistently turns a profit from financing sea voyages. (Of all the insane ventures! How does she do it? XD)

Now, Nu? Nu is a somewhat mysterious and alien serpent who spent much of her youth in the Aegir, evolving into a being more akin to Leviathans than Dragons, and during her Dragon phase she brought a fair amount of madness unknowingly to coastal villages. (Psionic and incapable of abstract thought...that's not a good recipe. Ia! Ia! XD) Nonetheless, being linked to human dreams had a way of awakening her own mind. She now enjoys mortal company in her mask as Tanith and possibly others, and her study of dragonlore has given her the idea that perhaps she should create a new amphibian race to serve as her cult - especially if she can align their souls to Seithr for more efficient worship and to cut off their Communion with the Heavens. She is thoroughly disdainful of mortal politics, however - "mortals and their sand castles." If she's drawn into them, it's because something is threatening her interests. (Personal comfort and wealth, and the possibility of establishing her cult for Metamorphosis and Apotheosis.) Last game, obviously, the Church was a threat and she was engaging in pre-emptive self defense - what's the kingdom doing this time to make her want to knock it down?

Her words, to remind everyone, are Arch-Psychic, Sea, and Dragon. Last game I was intending to play her as fairly evil, but since we're a group this time I want to make sure she can work with the rest of the team, so I'll avoid having her see the kingdom as her personal lunch buffet. :)

And yes, she is definitely planning to either bring down the Heavens, or else seal them off by eliminating the Aethir-souls. (Assuming that's possible.)

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

Nu:

Sadly mortal worship gets you nothing directly, but since a Dragon's Dominion usage is tied directly to the territory/organisms under it's control they sorta do? Dragon's will have an alternative to Apothesis that is more tied to the Primal Magic they are more naturally attuned with. I'm considering calling it "Cultivation" since it's more similar to a farmer tending a crop then a preacher on the pulpit. A Dragon who controls a Lair, and has brought the territory around it under it's control (this is magically binding) will gain ambient Seithr from it that can be used to apply Dominion to said territory. The more you take the more you can do, and the more unique the territory (unique plants/animals yes this includes Mortals...especially powerful Mortals) the better the returns. The true stipulation for what is yours is whether or not another Dragon is claiming it, or if their is too much ambient Aeithr to make it worthwhile (the territory around the Divine Weapons the Three Divine left behind are worthless to Dragons for instance). The higher your level the more territory you can claim. When you enter the Territory of another Dragon you will instantly  know it, and they will instantly know you. The PC's finding a way around this mechanic (without eating each other) is probably gonna be one of the first parts of the story.

The Wyrmtail is large, and only one Elder Dragon has made a nest there, but it's still a pie that needs to be carved carefully for you all to get the amount of Seithr a High Dragon would desire.

Interesting plot proposal. The Divine energy affecting Mortals is alien, and is actually rather invasive to their personalities. Some of the greatest Dragon Slayers during the Age of Fire were also the Dragon's most ardent followers before the Three Divine began giving Communion. Dragons who were more aware of Mortal agency almost felt like the Mortals were being mind controlled, as men/women of reason turned into fanatics seemingly overnight. Now some Dragons were murderous Tyrants who tortured people for fun, but there were also many Dragons who created utopia's for Mortals in their Territory. Finding a way to free Mortals from this Divine "hysteria" may be something Mortal-favoring Dragons may want to investigate. Also you guys should always one eye on abnormally gifted Mortals since they have a higher chance to Communing with the Gods and being swayed.

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

Noted. In that case, Nu's initial goal is to cultivate a Domain including her aquatic mortals. Soulshaping is probably more advanced apotheosis than she's capable of at this point.

quote:
"Cultivation"

These days, that carries a xianxia connotation, which is probably not what you're going for - but other than that it seems like a pretty solid term for what we're doing in shaping our domains.

Re: The Astral Sea (OOC Chat)

Yeah I been reading a lot of Martial Arts manwha over the last year... I felt like it fit cuz you are absorbing energy from the area at a controlled rate. My other plan was to go with "Demesne" but that sounded too Exalted to me.
