Character Creation

If you are bringing over a character to this game from the previous adventure, Palace of the Silver Princess, you will need to advance your character from the 3rd to the 5th level of experience. In doing so, you should follow these steps, utilizing the Dungeons and Dragons Expert Rulebook:

  1. For the 4th level of experience, assign your character the maximum number of hit points he or she is eligible for, based on class and Constitution modifier.
  2. Roll for your 5th level hit points normally.
  3. You may select a single magic item for your character. If it is a weapon or a suit of armor or shield, it should carry a bonus of +1. Spellcasters may propose a wand, staff, or other item from either the Basic or Expert rulebook, subject to DM approval. Each party member may also select a potion of their choice from the Basic rulebook.
  4. Magic Users and Elves should propose three 2nd level spells and two 3rd level spells that will be inscribed in their spellbook.
  5. Any additional equipment that is desired should be purchased utilizing the price list given on page X9 of the Expert Rulebook.
  6. Please note that the party will be utilizing horses for overland travel, but their mounts will be provided to them by the Kingdom of Haven.

If you are creating an original character for  Saga of the Shadow Lord, you will need to follow these steps, making use of both the Dungeons and Dragons Basic Rule Book (1981) and the Expert Rulebook.

When creating your character, follow these steps:

  1. All characters in the Saga of the Shadow Lord will begin play at the 5th level of experience.
  2. Roll 4d6 for each of your Ability Scores. Drop the lowest dice from each roll. Your rolls may be assigned to your abilities however you choose.
  3. Ability scores may be adjusted according to the process described on page B6 of the Basic Rulebook. Please note any adjustments made to me when alerting me that your character has been completed.
  4. Select your class. Record any special abilities provided by your class on your character sheet.
  5. Choose an alignment.
  6. Generate your hit points. For your first and second levels of experience, assign your character the highest number of hit points available (i.e. If you are a Magic-User, since you generate hit points with a 1d4, you would receive 4 hit points for your first level and 4 more for your second level). Roll your assigned hit die normally to determine the hit points you receive for your 3rd, 4th, and 5th levels of experience. Be sure to apply your Constitution modifier.
  7. Roll 3d6 and multiply the result by 10 to determine your starting number of gold pieces. Add and additional 300 gold pieces to the final result to account for gold collected during prior adventures. Purchase equipment from the list given on page X9  of the Expert Rulebook. Please note that horses will be provided to the party and will not need to be bought.
  8. Find your Armor Class, attack numbers, and saving throws and record that information on your character sheet.
  9. Record the languages you know on your character sheet. Should your Intelligence score entitle you to know additional languages, you may select them from the list on page B13 of the Basic Rulebook.
  10. If you are a Magic-User or an Elf, select 4 spells from the list of first level Magic-User spells, 3 spells from the list of second level spells, and 2 spells from the list of third level spells to record in your spell book. State which spells you have memorized for the opening day of the expedition. If you are a Cleric, indicate which first and second level spells you have prayed for on the first day of the adventure.
  12. Name your character. You may wish to provide some background for your persona. Record any biographical details on your character sheet.

If the dice have treated you poorly, you have two options. If your entire set of scores is poor, you may let me know and they make a second set of rolls. If there is only one ability score that is unacceptably low, you may reroll that attribute. You may keep the higher of the two rolls. If, after a complete reroll, you still feel you have a character that is unacceptably weak, contact me and we can work out how best to proceed.

For those interested in following a particular deity, the following list gives the names of gods and goddesses typically worshipped in the Kingdoms of Haven, Drairis, and the surrounding lands. This list was adopted from the Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game:
