V - The Tower of Gereth Minar

The old veteran had been lost in his own thoughts, his stare a thousand leagues away and perhaps a decade or so into the past. When the party began forming up near the stump, he seemed to snap back to the here and now.

"The God of Moonlight Battles smiles upon those who face their foes fearlessly and ferociously! Point your sword skyward warrior and receive the touch of Moonlight upon your face!"

Windor reached out his own gauntleted hand and placed it over the warrior's hand, invoking a minor prayer. It might have been just a trick of the light, but it certainly appeared as if a brief shaft of light descended with the quickness of thought, sliding down Greyband's blade and absorbing into his arms and chest.

"Honor the Moon, friend, and He will guide your hand!" Windor spoke with a fervor that was, perhaps, just a little bit frightening...

Greyband stretches his arm where it was once wounded, pointing his blade toward the sky, and smiles as the pain leaves the arm. "Blessed be the moon," he says. "And thank you. Now, for business.'

He lowers his visor and moves down, leading the party in. Once he has no need to climb, he straps on his shield as well and walks.

V - The Tower of Gereth Minar

Initially, some of the company members have to stoop down to enter the tunnel. After a short distance, the earthen passage reaches a crude set of stone steps which descend into an eastward leading corridor. Here, the ceiling is higher, though the tunnel remains narrow, providing only enough room for the adventurers to progress in single file.

At the rear of the line, Renia lights a torch with flint and steel and holds it aloft.

The tunnel continues eastward for a considerable distance. At regular intervals, the company encounters additional sets of stone stairs that bring them deeper into the earth. After descending the third such set of steps, the gloomy passage turns to the north, pressing forward into the deep shadows for almost sixty feet before halting at a tall door fashioned from stone. Cobwebs cover its dirt encrusted surface and on its right side, a large iron handle, speckled with rust, provides the means to pull it open.

Assuming that most doors don't have traps is the kind of thinking that can get a guild thief injured, maimed, or even killed. So Jarder goes about his business.

The veteran servant of the Moon God scratched at his beard and then withdrew a torch from his own gear, lighting it off the one held by Renia. Then he touched it to the cobwebs near the door.

"I don't like spiders." he said simply but with a scowl.

Jarder and Orin both inspect the door thoroughly, but neither finds any evidence of traps. It occurs to both adventurers that the door itself, with its unusual stone construction, is likely a secret door of some kind, its appearance concealed from easy detection within the room that it leads to.

Windsor burns the cobwebs from the portal, sending a trio of small spiders skittering across the tunnel’s walls, in search of new shelter.

Jarder pulls on the handle and the portal opens with a groan and the noise of stone scraping stone. Dust cascades from the door’s seams.

”...the body hauled out before sunset,” the adventurers hear a gravelly voice say in the Common tongue, ”Place stinks bad enough as it is.” Beyond the portal, the company members find a square chamber, the gray walls marked by innumerable cracks, the air within even colder than that within the hidden tunnel. In one corner of the room sits an iron stove, topped by a short stack of greasy tin dishes. A few feet away, there is a single wooden bed, piled with filthy woolen blankets.

The wall opposite the bed is occupied by a worn writing desk and a short bookcase, packed with loose parchments and scarred leather bound books. Above the desk, a pair of battle axes hang on the wall, crossed behind a battered shield that bears the symbol of a wyvern.

”And whoever’s been taking pity on Felinda, you need to...” The speech is cut off as the opening door topples over the weapon rack that had been placed against it, iron maces and spears spilling onto the floor with a thunderous clatter. In the room’s center, six men are gathered around a table. Five are dressed like soldiers, clad in dark colored chain mail, swords hanging from their belts. They are being addressed by a tall man wearing a leather apron, armed with a warhammer and bullwhip.

The gathering is momentarily shocked by the sudden appearance of the adventurers, but an instant later, each of them is reaching for his weapon.

Orin's bushy eyebrows shot up as they found themselves in the middle of an occupied guardroom. Then he grinned, hunkered behind his shield and rushed forward into the fray!  Choosing the first unoccupied guard, he whirled his hammer with a speed he barely knew he possessed and then leveled blows at the hapless miscreant.

Brining up the rear of their single file line, Killian kept his sword sheathed and opted to carry the spear from the elven ghosts. When the party started rushing in to the room, he felt the wave of Neuken's magic wash over him. He charged in behind Greyband. "I'm not dead yet, friend." he jested as he thrusted his spear in to one of the guards.
