V - The Tower of Gereth Minar
Jarder pulls on the handle and the portal opens with a groan and the noise of stone scraping stone. Dust cascades from the door’s seams.
”...the body hauled out before sunset,” the adventurers hear a gravelly voice say in the Common tongue, ”Place stinks bad enough as it is.” Beyond the portal, the company members find a square chamber, the gray walls marked by innumerable cracks, the air within even colder than that within the hidden tunnel. In one corner of the room sits an iron stove, topped by a short stack of greasy tin dishes. A few feet away, there is a single wooden bed, piled with filthy woolen blankets.
The wall opposite the bed is occupied by a worn writing desk and a short bookcase, packed with loose parchments and scarred leather bound books. Above the desk, a pair of battle axes hang on the wall, crossed behind a battered shield that bears the symbol of a wyvern.
”And whoever’s been taking pity on Felinda, you need to...” The speech is cut off as the opening door topples over the weapon rack that had been placed against it, iron maces and spears spilling onto the floor with a thunderous clatter. In the room’s center, six men are gathered around a table. Five are dressed like soldiers, clad in dark colored chain mail, swords hanging from their belts. They are being addressed by a tall man wearing a leather apron, armed with a warhammer and bullwhip.
The gathering is momentarily shocked by the sudden appearance of the adventurers, but an instant later, each of them is reaching for his weapon.
