Game Information

Saga of the Shadow Lord is an epic adventure, written for the Dungeons and Dragons Expert Rules by Stephen Bourne. It challenges the players with exploring a number of different environments and contending with a wide variety of challenges. It is a high fantasy tale of adventurers striving to protect a besieged kingdom from a mysterious, malevolent power that has taken hold in a forbidding land that has been largely unexplored for decades.

I’ve had the opportunity to run several “old school” fantasy adventures here on RPOL. In years past, I made use of Matt Finch’s Swords and Wizardry rules, but after rereading the original Dungeons and Dragons Basic Rulebook by Tom Moldvay, I decided to try my hand at running a game with those rules. I was blessed with an outstanding group of players who made the experience extremely rewarding. My players encouraged me to keep a good thing going, so after doing a bit of reading, I elected to try my hand at this formidable scenario, one of the largest I’ve ever undertaken. I hope that it proves enjoyable for everyone involved.

For purposes of clarity, the rule book being utilized here is the Expert/i] edition published by [i]TSR in 1981, written in the main by Dave cook. It preceded the 1983 edition, which was authored by Frank Mentzer, which formed part of the basis for the subsequent Rules Cyclopedia.

The easiest way to obtain a copy, for those that require it, is in digital format from DriveThruRPG.

Note that the Expert Rulebook presumes familiarity with, and use of, the Dungeons and Dragons Basic Rulebook, written by Tom Moldvay. Should you require a copy of those rules, you can obtain them from the same source.

If cost is a factor, the Labyrinth Lord rules published by Goblinoid Games will work in a pinch.

Please understand that possession of, and familiarity with, the rules is not required for participation. If you’re interested in taking part in fun filled, old fashioned fantasy adventure, you’re most welcome to join in.
