A quick note for all of the newcomers that took the time to apply to the game.

First and foremost, thank you for your interest in joining in. I ended up with a lot...a lot...more RTJs than I anticipated receiving, and every one of them looks to be of high quality. So, I intend to spend the next day or so reading over everyone’s submissions, and I should have responses out to all of you by Wednesday at the latest.

Once again, thanks to each of you for applying. I’ll be in touch soon.

Jarder, your breakdown of the party’s composition is correct. It’s a really good mix of classes and, for those that came from Palace of the Silver Princess, there’s a lot more magical firepower on hand. In my estimation, in light of some of the challenges that lay ahead, that’s a good thing.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

What’s actually going to happen is that each of your characters will initially answer a summons from Argenta, Princess of Haven, where the monarch will ask for your collective help. Some of those called will, naturally, recognize a few of their fellow adventurers.

Interestingly, on the whole, there are more new characters than established ones. Although several players returned from Palace, only three retained their original characters. So, there’s a lot of new faces. :)

I’ll say that Gylharen provided the party with an additional 150 g.p. for purposes of bribing weak willed soldiers and purchasing necessities.

I had assumed as much, but I appreciate the clarification.

Thus far, it appears that there’s a vote of 3 (Killian, Patch, Orin) to 1 (Neuken) in favor of ambushing the disguised Denagothians. I’ll keep the discussion open for another day or so, then move ahead with whatever turns out to be the will of the majority.

Just a quick note to avoid any potential confusion: The distance from the tree line, where the party is concealed, and the campfire is around forty feet. The characters will be easily able to cover that ground and attack the Denagothians all within the space of a single round.

Honestly I don’t know how to answer. I and a couple other players got the notice about the light, but looking back over the terrain description it looks like rocks and burnt out vegetation. So I need to defer to the DM on what the terrain is like where the ambush is hiding.

That’s correct. You do.

Jayanti:
So I need to defer to the DM on what the terrain is like where the ambush is hiding.

I may have not been descriptive enough, so allow me to correct that. The road itself is leading northward and it becomes narrower through the stone that surrounds it. To the east and west, flanking the road, are tall rock formations. Slopes on each formation would make them easy to climb. The rocks are jagged and uneven and vegetation is sparse. Only a few trees and shrubs are thriving amongst the stone. The formations are between fifteen and twenty feet in height.

At the top of both formations are a number of stones and loose boulders that could be used for hiding and cover.

You are absolutely correct. It was my error. I misremembered. Sincere apologies.

When the spell is cast, the DM rolls 2d8, which determines how many hit dice of creatures are affected. In this instance, I filled a nine. As each of the brigands have a single hit die, all but one went down.

I won’t even have to roll for Neuken’s follow up.

Something I’ll need for this, and subsequent nights that the company is journeying through the wilderness, is a watch schedule, so I’m aware of who is standing guard at what time.

Renia is accustomed to such duty and will be willing to take whatever hours are assigned to her.

There's eight of us including Renia, so we could split into four watches of 2 people for 2-1/2 hours?  That's 8 hours of sleep for everyone and 10 hours total.

By my count we only have three demi-humans: Jayanti, Killian and Orin.  Correct me if I've missed someone.  So that would mean one shift gets no inbred night vision.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Given the number of adventurers that lent a hand to the effort, I’d say anyone that participated in the shooting would need to mark off three arrows/bolts.

Jarder Mehro:
09:45, Today: Jarder Mehro rolled 113 using 2d100 with rolls of 33,80.  Find Traps and Hide in Shadows.

Failed both rolls.  Now I'm remembering why I wasn't a fan of BECMI thieves

Don’t worry too much. I’ll grant that the next trap in line is the equivalent of a land mine on steroids (2d100 damage to everything in a sixty foot radius), but after that, the tower’s free of mechanical hazards. ;)

To add some clarification to the current IC discussion: None of the adventurers, neither the scouts nor the rest of the party, sees any evidence of any sort of mechanical trap in the area. This isn’t because they don’t perceive the presence of traps. There literally aren’t any traps present.

The tower was clearly a home to human sized creatures earlier in its history. Without spoiling too much, you’ll find that the upper floor has been modified somewhat to accommodate its large inhabitant. But it could be easily repopulated by individuals of medium (human/demi-human) size.

The only reason I can see why we should search that room is if there is a secret door or other exit that helps us flank or avoid the Giant.

As that is probably a low probably I'd say we just skip it.  Why use resources with a probable fight with rats if we can help it?

As a character, you can't trust a giant farther than you can kick a fire beetle!  He'll likely ambush us as soon as our backs are turned and then grind our bones to make his bread!  See how his eyes are set so close together?  A sure sign of nefarious and evil intentions!  And he smells!  Bah!

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Patch:
What does Patch know about Denegothian customs? Will this group stand out like a sore thumb, or will our mercenary idea have a likely chance of working?

Sorry, I never addressed this question.

This is the kind of reception that Patch would anticipate receiving at the Denagothian village:

Kidding aside, yes, the mercenary story would likely pass muster at Geron, the village beyond the woods that the party just traveled. Unlike Wendar, the forces of Denagoth are quite open to making use of the services of bandits, brigands, and other dangerous sorts. Some well travelled mercenaries are utilized as scouts by the Denagothians.

Also, a quick reminder, so no one has to go searching through the old thread for the information:

Gylharen:
“Also...just beyond the mountain pass in Denagoth is a village called Geron. The Shadow Lord’s forces maintain a barracks there. One of my spies has infiltrated the town and will be waiting there to share what he has learned with you. Even I do not know what he looks like, but he will respond to a password. Should you ask him, ’What is the price of gray breeches?”, he will answer, ’Not much, unless the trim is gold.”

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

To the best of the party’s knowledge, there is no reason to suspect that the Denagothians would have any immediate hostility toward dwarves.

To further clarify, the human Denagothian leadership is largely willing to traffic with anyone that might further their cause. However, as much of the Denagothian forces consist of humanoids (orcs, goblins), one would certainly expect that long standing hostilities harbored by such creatures would still exist.

I don’t wish to misspeak, but as I understood it, the idea was that the adventurers would speak with the Captain of the Denagothian forces stationed in Geron, who is using the Sheriff’s Office as a headquarters, in order to establish their cover as mercenaries seeking employment.

I believe that speaking with a tailor in town, as well as the departing trapper, was also discussed, as it was felt that they were likely covers for the Wendarian spy that the company is supposed to meet with.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Okay, I want to check with the group before moving the game forward.

It appears that the strategy discussion has reached a halt. At this point I am assuming that:

  • One of the spellcasters is going to attempt to put the temple guards to sleep.
  • Jarder intends to try to unlock the southern temple door so that he and some of his fellow adventurers can grab the high priest.
  • Should the sleep spell not work on the guards, Greyband and Renia are prepared to attempt a distraction.
  • Killian has offered the use of invisibility to assist in the high priest's capture.

Do I have that correct? If so, is everyone good with me moving the game onward to the temple at nightfall?

I'll take time this weekend to read through the game history to get a feel for where you are, what the group is trying to accomplish, as well as get a general feel for the type of character Killian has been. Sure, I will have my own spin on his personality, but I don't want him to go from being Ned Stark and then suddenly becoming Ramsay Bolton overnight. Those things take time... lol

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Okie. I think I'm all caught up. The Fellowship of the Elvenstar journeyed north, heading towards the lands of the Easterlings Dengothians, slaughtering a few them along the way and debating the fate of ensorcelled other ones. Mengele Patch suggested breaking all of their bones and then setting them crookedly.

The fellowship wisely avoided the dragon and instead chanced upon a giant's tower. At the top, they parleyed with Treebeard the isolationist giant, and he led them to a shrouded bridge.

Eventually, they reached a village on the borderland where they found their contact, a trapper, who provided much intelligence. A high priest of Idris knew the location of the Elvenstar--but how to extract him from the temple and, later, presumably, the information from him? It is believed that Sauron the Shadow Lord conceals the gem within a stronghold.

So far things have all gone according to plan but something seems a little off about the burglar and the elf...

So it looks like Jarder's a workmanlike fellow who pays his union dues. But stress and trauma have a way of altering a person...

Hmm, not sure what to do.

Hear Noise doesn't equal Eavesdrop, I take it.

(A) Jarder could try to move silently into the room and eavesdrop for real.

(B) He could try another one of the doors. Prob the oak one as the other prob leads to another area of the temple.

My apologies, everyone. I had a spike in work related concerns that over took me during the past week and weekend, which led to me being a bit slow here. Fortunately, everything has settled down now. I should be back to posting regularly from this point forward. Again, sorry for the delay.

Killian Hawkfire:
OOC: Approximately how from the front door are those of us hiding outside?

The tree line is relatively close to the temple building. I would say that the group that is outside is approximately fifty to sixty feet from the main entrance.

The apprentice has been dismissed so she should take her cue. After that, does J. signal the others? I don't recall reading about an agreed upon signal. A piercing whistle should be in his repertoire. Or does he backstab him? J. doesn't have anything like a sap in his inventory. But if Raymond Chandler has taught me anything, J. just needs to smack him in the back of his head with the pommel of his dagger. How does that work in this system?

My plan right now:

1) Traitorous apprentice exits the room.

2) J clocks the high priest on the back of the head.

3) J whistles most magnificently.

For the attack roll: d20+4 (backsmack) + 1 (str) + 1 (enchantment)?

I think sneakery can only get one so far. Maybe the one hit drops him like Philip Marlowe was KO'ed so many times. Maybe he's more high level bureaucrat than priest. But if it doesn't drop him, J. will need immediate support.

There is also the standard chance that a sleeper wouldn't hear a whistle or wake briefly before falling back asleep. Those already awake might dismiss it. A noise has to be repeated before people really take notice. At least that's what my reading of horror fiction tells me.

B. Try to kill him from here, knowing that at least 1 more will join
C. Try to attract him over to our location (maybe he will think we are the missing guard?) and take him by surprise away from the front door.

My vote is C, but not much time to decide before A happens by default... :)

I would still need a “to hit” roll from anyone who is trying to subdue him. The guard has an AC of 5. I’m working on the assumption that blunt weapons (or blunt portions of weapons) will inflict 1-4 points of damage on a hit, modified by Strength and any magical bonuses the weapon used possesses.

Jarder Mehro:

The dragon’s name comes straight from the module, so credit for the serpent’s moniker has to go to Stephen Bourne, the author of the adventure. As to whether it has some similarly colorfully named siblings, I’m afraid that’s a mystery the writer left unaddressed. :)

Stephen Bourne, the author of the adventure.

..which I would have known had I read to the end of the credits.

The only reason the name caught my eye is that it reminds me of the types of names that characters might have had in a medieval allegory: Prudence, Temptation, and Sloth (and so forth) in which concepts and ideas masquerade as characters. I could well imagine Vitriol on stage with them. You probably remember from your ancient school days the stories of Hawthorne; he wrote a few partial allegories ("Young Goodman Brown" among them).

I know that some are ready to move into the scrap that awaits within the cave, but I just need to make certain that I understand what’s in play before the group steps into the serpent’s lair.

Is it right for me to presume that invisibility spells have been cast on both Jarder and Patch prior to the party’s entrance, or is that matter still being debated?

Also, to verify: Greyband, Orin, and Killian are carrying the enchanted spears. Jayanti is bearing the quiver of magic arrows. Is that correct?

I just want to be sure that I have a firm grasp of the party’s preparations before the dragon wipes them all...I mean, before they face the dragon in battle.

The problem is once you attack you're not invisible anymore. I was thinking we were going to sneak in while invisible so we could surround the dragon wolf-pack style and barrage it from all angles.

Look, I wasn't trying to complicate things so much.  Sorry about that.

Let's just cast Invisibility on Jarder for sure, on Patch if he can still heal and stay invisible, or otherwise on as many of the Fireball and Lightning Bolt casters as possible.  That way they can all get within range and let loose, with Killian, Greyband and Orin charging in with our spears afterward.

Agreed. We need to go now and strike quickly. The elven spirits said the dragon has grown complacent over the years and chances are it is may be sleeping, or at least less alert. It is likely not expecting a full on assault in its own lair. Besides, I don't think having 2 instead of 3 invisible will have much affect on the outcome of our siege of the dragon's lair.

If it is alert, I can cast a phantasmal image of a giant or something on the opposite side of the room as a distraction.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

A single fireball’s blast radius, according to the Expert Rules is twenty feet. So, if two were cast simultaneously, I would treat the effective radius as doubled to forty feet. Damage for each fireball would be rolled individually. Were any characters caught in the explosion, I would arbitrarily decide, likely with a dice roll, which portion of the room was affected by which fireball.

In addition, with regard to all things combustible, I feel it’s important to reiterate the following:

Dungeon Master:
The scents of the marsh, brackish water and rotting vegetation, are especially strong here.

You can activate the sword’s flames as you move, then make an attack with it on the same round.

Jarder Mehro:
A move silently check to trigger the backstab attempt?

I’m not going to require that at the moment. With all of the chaos of the various spells and dragon’s breath tearing across the island, Jarder should be able to use that as cover to move into position.

If those who have lost characters are interested in continuing, let me know here or via PM. I have a plan for bringing new characters into the fold after the battle with the dragon.

Before the party attempts to enter Gereth Minar, I think it’s appropriate, taking into account all that the company has dealt with, for the adventurers to progress to sixth level. Please go ahead and roll for your additional hit points and adjust any skill percentages as required. Magic Users/Elves, you won’t gain access to fourth level spells at this point, but you will gain an additional third level spell each day.

If anyone needs any help with leveling up, please let me know. I’m happy to assist.

How much exp has been awarded and should we then apply our exp bonus? I know the DM kind of handwaved it but that can raise questions.

Is Jarder at 20001 exp and Neuken at 40001? Etc.

Patch, I don’t anticipate the party facing a combat situation right off the bat, so if you can get me a character name and concept, I can update that information so you can participate in any dialogue that takes place while you’re still working on getting your sheet finalized.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Apologies for the double post. I know it’s been a while back, so I wanted to provide the following as a reminder:

Dungeon Master:
“Upon drawing in sight of the tower, you will see that it is surrounded by an unmoving bank of fog. The fog’s fumes are lethal. I believe that the forces in the tower have been given something that grants them immunity. The mists are parted for those that have permission to enter. I would strongly suggest you find a remedy of your own, lest you perish before ever setting foot inside.”

The priest smiles. ”However, there is another solution that I am aware of. One that I would be willing to provide to you, in exchange for my freedom.”

Dungeon Master:
The high priest kicks off his left sandal. It lands beside Jarder. ”Cut it open, burglar. Carefully,” he says.

Cutting the sole of the leather sandal open, Jarder finds a folded piece of parchment within it. The paper is brown and somewhat brittle with age.

”The Shadow Lord’s aged steward is almost as old as the tower itself. He also loves his drink. During one of my early visits, I was able to provide him with some extremely strong spirits I had obtained during my travels, which put him promptly to sleep. Amongst his valuables, I found that.”

The parchment is a carefully hand drawn map, which details the landmarks and terrain on the approach to Gareth Minar. The map marks a specific spot on the slope south of the tower where a hidden tunnel may be accessed. The tunnel apparently connects to a series of underground passages beneath the ancient structure. Drawn next to the tunnel’s entrance is a tree stump and a circle, both marked with a symbol of a wyvern in flight.

”The circle is a large, flat stone, with the wyvern painted upon it. It rests beside the stump, which is easier to spot at a distance. The tunnel entrance is beneath the stone. I believe it was not originally meant as a way into the tower, but rather as a means to escape it, were it besieged. But that is only conjecture on my part.”

OOC That gem valuation certainly doesn't come from pg. 26 of the DMG which has rubies at 5k each. I've noticed the disparity before with other gems; I guess gem values got nerfed at some point.

Moldvay’s Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rulebook provides a percentile table for Dungeon Masters to randomly determine the value of gems found in a treasure cache. The potential value of each gem ranges from 10 g.p. to (on a roll of 96-00) 1,000 g.p.

Key question: if Greyband is in the doorway, is he in danger from the fireball?

I verified the details of the Fireball spell in the Basic Rulebook, and it is clear that the diameter of the resulting explosion is forty feet. If you glance at the Main Game Map, you’ll note that it’s precisely forty feet from the door to the first set of stairs. So, yes, anyone that’s beyond the doorway is going to get flame broiled.

The fireball is akin to a flash fire. It explodes in a single round and then dissipates.

A flask of oil, on the other hand, will coat targets and create a pool that is roughly 3 feet in diameter. The fire will burn on the effected targets for two rounds, damaging them each round they are ablaze. However, while alight, the impacted statues (the first two) might pose an additional threat to any engaging them in melee.

Windor Moonwrought:
@DM - Are we doing Crits in this game? Just rolled a Nat 20 for oil tossage!

Sorry, no. I’ve been running the game with the Basic and Expert rules as written. However, given the accuracy of Windsor’s throw, I would certainly say that he managed to douse both statues with the oil.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Wrong edition. :) The Basic and Expert Rulebooks don’t make any mention of specialization. In point of fact, in the Basic Rulebook it is presumed that every weapon does 1d6 damage, unless you use the optional Variable Weapon Damage table. Yes, I’m serious.

Weapon Specialization was introduced in First Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in the Unearthed Arcana book. It was also included in Oriental Adventures. OSRIC also includes Weapon Specialization as an option.

As a side note, in some of the online conversations I’ve read on the topic, several participants have offered the opinion that weapon specialization with the bow is overpowered and hopelessly broken. :)

Bow specialization just allows a well-trained archer to operate his bow like a Gatling gun. What's broken about that?

I am playing said bowman in another game. I feel like it's not that bad, though front-loaded at early levels. I'm not seeing how it's so broken, especially if the shooting into melee rules are followed, and one keeps track of his arrows used. Gatling guns are great while they have ammo...

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

From a Dungeon Master’s perspective, if the specialization is so overpowered that it gets out of hand, it’s a situation that can be easily remedied.

”As the party proceeds down the long hallway, a bright red light suddenly fills the space ahead. Squinting at the glare, the adventurers realize that they are witnessing the opening of a magical portal. A moment later, Orcus, Prince of the Undead, steps through the ethereal doorway, the Wand of Death gripped tightly in his massive right hand. As he stretches up to his full height, towering above the company, his eyes blaze with fury as his gaze settles on the group’s archer.”

Generally, I think there could be some spatial constraints on the entire party ganging up on a single foe, but those are usually situational. In this case, with only a single statue within the corridor, I would say there’s enough room for the party members to get their attacks in, as some could move to strike at the statue from its flanks, or even from behind.

In this rule set, sleep would be a viable option, as it specifically targets enemy creatures, as opposed to working in a general area of effect. If you elect to cast it, I’ll make a roll with 2d8, which will determine how many hit dice of creatures are effected. (If I roll 4 and you were facing three gnolls, which have 2 hit dice each, two of the gnolls would be put to sleep.) The effect lasts for 4d4 turns (40 - 160 minutes).

The three identical ones might be potions of healing.

But I wouldn't try the other ones.

I think we just have to go all out here and maybe take the rest we deferred earlier after this fight. Unless there is an endless supply of guards.

My apologies, but I need to ask for clarification from a couple of you, so I know how to properly process the combat results.

Dimitri, who is it you were attacking? The officer, or one of the approaching soldiers?

Jarder, I need to ask the same question. If you were trying to attack one of the Denagothian soldiers coming down the northern corridor, those that have engaged them already (Orin, Killian, and possibly Dimitri) charged down the adjoining hall to do so. You could have landed a normal attack against one of them if you joined that group, but you would not have been able to position yourself for a backstab. Or were you attacking the officer?

Do you mean the enchanted weapons that were found at the elven hall? If so, it was three spears and a quiver of magical arrows that were discovered. Killian has one of the spears and Greyband has another. I don’t know what became of the third. If it was never claimed, it could certainly have been passed to Dimitri or Renia.

The arrows were in Jayanti’s possession when she was blown into briquettes by the blue dragon. I don’t honestly recall if anyone went in search of them, though those missiles that survived were likely scattered across the swamp.

I do remember that Jarder's class restrictions prevented him from using anything from that arsenal.

What is the party composition, by the way? Strange to be asking at this point...

Jarder Mehro:
Can we attack and then move in this rule set?

Sorry for the delay. I wanted to look this up to ensure I answered it correctly.

In combat, a character can normally move at one third their standard movement rate during a round. Since all player characters in Basic/Expert move at a rate of 120 feet per turn, that means they can move 40 feet in a single round.

You can run, which will triple your movement speed. The rules don’t specifically indicate that you cannot run and attack in the same round, so I would have to say that it’s possible to do both.

However, once you attack an opponent in melee, your situation changes. If you want to move away from your opponent, you have two options: a fighting withdrawal or a retreat.

A fighting withdrawal only allows you to move half of your normal movement rate away from an opponent. You can’t run during a withdrawal. If you moved, attacked, then tried to withdraw, I’d have to make a judgment call on how far you could go based on the length of your prior move. If it was more than 40 feet, my thought would be that you couldn’t withdraw until the following round.

You can also retreat, which allows you to move at your full movement rate. If you choose to retreat, your opponent is entitled to an attack against you with a +2 bonus “to hit”. If you happen to be carrying a shield, it isn’t factored into your armor class for purposes of that attack.

Greyband, if you wanted to hurl a single barrel down the hall at the dragon, I’d probably ask for a “to hit” roll. You could include your Strength modifier and I would say you’d be rolling against an AC of 5. It’s a big target, but there’s always the chance that you over or under throw.

If everyone wanted to get involved, I would say that the entire company could roll the collection of burning barrels into the eastern hallway in the space of a round. But it would require everyone. I’d also suggest that the party l put some space between themselves and the casks as soon as the last one gets rolling.

Additionally, if you’re going to do anything with the barrels, you’ll need to do it during the current round.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

I would have to rely on the description for the boots given in the Dungeons & Dragons Expert Rulebook, which is as follows:

quote:
The wearer may levitate (as the magic user's spell). There is no limit to the duration of the effect.

For further clarification, here is the description of the levitate spell:

quote:
When this spell is cast, the caster may move up or down in the air without any support. This spell does not enable the caster to move from side-to-side. The caster could, however, levitate to a ceiling and move sideways by using his or her hands. Motion up or down is at a rate of 20' per round. The spell cannot be cast on another person or object. The caster may carry a normal amount of weight

Based on that, I would say that the boots wouldn’t enable the levitation of anything beyond Jarder himself and whatever was on his person. That wouldn’t preclude him from carrying additional items, or even a fellow adventurer, but his capacity to do so would be based on his own strength.

The description that you gave comes from the First Edition AD&D Dungeon Master’s Guide. But since we’re using the Basic/Expert Rulebooks to steer things in this game, I think it’s appropriate to go with the interpretation provided by that ruleset.

Totally appropriate! I just like comparing/contrasting the rules.

So it sounds like he would have to find a ledge to jump off and then he could ascend/descend.

How much can he carry with a 13 str? One Neuken?

Yes, probably one Neuken, or a pre-petrification Zinnelis.

Any of the others’ armor would likely make such a trip pretty hazardous.

Hey, Orin, according to the DM's OOC cartoon link, the top floor is now the ground floor in a manner of speaking. Great Daffy Duck bit. Surely, it was better growing up watching Looney Tunes than jerks on Twitch.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Sorry. I didn’t mean for my cartoon commentary on what transpired to cause any in-game confusion.

The formerly three story tower is now two stories tall. The third floor, which the adventurers have yet to enter, is now the tower’s second level. The second floor effectively ceased to exist. The ground floor, though damaged and now possessed of a lower ceiling, is still primarily intact. Those party members that remained inside the structure fled to the ground floor.

There are windows at the top of the tower where Jarder and Neuken could enter, if they want to go directly to the upmost floor. If they want to reunite with their compatriots first, there’s a breach in the southern wall of the bottom floor that they can enter through.

Yes, Jarder could manage a missile attack against the sorcerer from his current position. Given that the party has achieved surprise, it would be fair to rule it a backstab attempt.

Correct. The Denagothian possesses a Strength of 17, which would normally give him a +2 bonus to “to hit” and damage rolls in melee.

I think that this is kind of an inspired observation. But I agree, retconning the past damage adjustment would be unwieldy. Rather, what I think I’ll do is add the cumulative missed damage to his next successful attack. So, taking into account that he’s landed two previous blows, and factoring the adjustment for his upcoming swing, means that the next character who eats a strike from the Denagothian will suffer a +6 modifier to the damage they receive.

Cool.

The sorcerer is on the opposite side of the chamber from the melee with the warrior and hellhound. Since the hound was killed, as Renia is the only character actively engaging in melee with the warrior, any of the characters who were fighting the beast could reach the Shadow Lord if they ran. There’s nothing in the rules that I’ve seen which forbids running and attacking in the same round.

With the Elvenstar secured, I don’t know if there is anything specific that the adventurers wish to do in the tower. To be up front, there aren’t any enemies remaining within the (partially destroyed) structure. With that in mind, I can bring things to a close with a summary of the party’s journey back to the Kingdom of Wendar and the restoration of the Elvenstar, if that is acceptable to the group.

Which brings me to a second inquiry. There is a second portion to the Saga of the Shadow Lord module. I wasn’t certain if those here were interested in pursuing another quest within this campaign world, or if the successful retrieval of the Elvenstar served as a satisfying  ending. I’m sincerely good with either course but, should we elect to continue, I believe that I will attempt to recruit an additional player or two into the ranks prior to moving forward.

Yes, I would be.

One group of classic adventures that I’ve had my eye on for a while are the set of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons modules authored by Lenard Lakofka and set in the Spindrift Isles in Greyhawk, starting with The Secret of Bone Hill. Bone Hill is pretty cool, in that it offers a number of opportunities for adventure, both in dungeons and the wilderness. Of course, if I were to undertake such a game, I would utilize the First Edition AD&D/OSRIC to run it.

I’ve also given thought to taking one of Greg Gillespie’s dungeons out for a spin, either Barrowmaze or The Forbidden Caverns of Archaia.

If anyone is interested in either of those options, please let me know.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Wow, talk about being in harmony. The Secret of Bone Hill was one of the first adventures I ever sampled (albeit with two total players: a DM and myself). And there is the follow-up, The Assassin's Knot, more of a mystery + RP.

As for systems, I prefer AD&D/OSRIC for a few reasons I don't need to detail. OK, I'll share one. Damage output is higher for non-casters which improves the pace of combat.

Megadungeons. Gillespie’s dungeons would be major, if not possibly life-long, undertakings. I'm in a well-run Stonehell and Arden Vul game. Personally, I've wanted to play Tegel Manor (awkward to run PBP).

Forbidden Caverns seems to get some fair criticism here:

https://tenfootpole.org/ironspike/?p=3881

I think you could overcome the lackluster writing, but it might be too much work in the end. Barrowmaze seems to have had a more positive reception.

Sounds great!

As for the next campaign: I have no real interest in playing AD&D again. That system gave me headaches when I played & ran it decades ago and refreshes of it didn't make me feel any better. I really joined because I wanted to dust off my Basic/Expert books, and that was fun. I'm very satisfied with the completion of this run and would be content to step away at this point.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

So, after much thought and deliberation, I’ve elected to take a crack at running Barrowmaze. It is an incredibly well crafted campaign setting, and while reaching the dungeon’s “true end” would represent a massive undertaking, there’s an enormous number of thrilling adventures to be had on the way there. You might say that it’s ultimately all about the journey. Because of the central maze’s construction, it affords a party a lot of options regarding which quests they want to take up at any given time, or if they simply want to dedicate themselves to exploring the ancient complex.

I’m going to run it using the Labyrinth Lord rules, which are very flexible and adapt well to many different play styles. I think I should have all of the groundwork completed in about a week’s time, at which point, I’ll be ready to accept players. My apologies for the fact that it took longer than expected to finalize my next project.

Anyone here would, of course, be more than welcome to join in.

Neuken Orulto:
So how much loot and XP did we get?

I will get you a firm answer in the next few days, Neuken, so you’ll have a firm idea of what plateaus the heroes finally reached.

For the record, I still intend to take a crack at Bone Hill. Should I be able to get that game together, I’ll reach out to those here who expressed interest about it.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Well, if you just need the rules in their most straightforward form, you can go here:

Goblinoid Games - Downloads

You’ll want to download both the Labyrinth Lord book and the Advanced Edition Companion. Goblinoid offers both free of charge. I checked and both are the most recent revision.

If you want everything under one cover with artwork and such, you can purchase a copy of Advanced Labyrinth Lord from DriveThruRPG.

DriveThruRPG - Advanced Labyrinth Lord

If you look through Goblinoid Games’ offerings on DriveThruRPG, you can also find the most recent Labyrinth Lord rulebook and Advanced Edition Companion. They are the same books that are offered on Goblinoid’s website, except that they include artwork.

There’s also a version of the Advanced Labyrinth Lord book that features a cover with Orcus about to wipe out a group of hapless adventurers. It’s just a different cover. The interior contents are the same.

Just to be sure I haven’t caused any undue confusion: The rules contained in the Advanced Labyrinth Lord book are precisely the same as those given in the Labyrinth Lord rulebook and the Advanced Edition Companion. The only difference is that Advanced Labyrinth Lord collects the rules from the two volumes under one cover. The rules themselves are the same in both versions.

I am of course interested, although I think I'll retire Orin and come up with a replacement character.  This last adventure was enough to convince him to go out on top, rather than hang on too long and die an inglorious death.  :)

Let me take a look and I'll let you know if I'm still in! I love the original B/X feel of Labyrinth Lord, need to make sure I am still behind the Advanced rules.

Jarder Mehro:
In light of the "massive undertaking" part, I think we should consider streamlining our combat processing in one way or another such that we don't need a week per turn.

Sorry, we skipped over discussing this in earnest.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to better handle combats going forward?

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

To start with a negative, we want to avoid waiting a week for all of the players to make a combat post. Some players will post every day, some every other day or so, but some will occasionally post less frequently.

How do we account for that to keep the game running at a pleasing pace?

We can try some version of the system this DM employed link to another game, where players declare actions and the DM processes the round. In this manner, players could declare two rounds of actions (DM or player can make the rolls).

Automatic processing of a round can always be paused if a character falls below half or fewer hps.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Over the weekend, as I was getting everything put together for Barrowmaze, I gave this matter a bit of thought. I think I might approach it in this fashion:

Let’s say there are three adventurers. We’ll call them Ironbeard (a dwarven fighter), Ambrose (a human magic user), and Fergus (a halfling thief). The trio venture into a tomb and while plundering a small chest full of coins and gems, four skeletons suddenly spring up, moving to attack the group with rusted swords and spears.

The adventurers win the initiative roll. I indicate that everyone should declare their actions within the next three days. Within that time period, I get posts from Ironbeard and Ambrose, but Fergus is completely silent.

Here’s how I’d narrate the outcome:

”Ironbeard shatters the rib cage of the lead skeleton with a powerful swing of his hammer, the remainder of its dry bones clattering harmlessly to the floor. The arcane bolts of energy which Ambrose calls forth destroy the skull of another of the undead, the remainder of its form falling to pieces.”

“Suddenly, for reasons no one is able to readily perceive, Fergus dies.”

In all seriousness, I need to actually read over some of the combat in the linked game more closely. I’m not entirely certain how I feel about players declaring two rounds’ worth of actions ahead of time. While the pause for low HP seems sensible, I know that tactics can become fluid as a combat situation alters from moment to moment.

It might be that, after a set number of days, it would simply fall to me to NPC the actions of anyone who hasn’t yet posted.

Folks, I am going to gently bow out at this point. Real life is just getting more demanding, and I'd rather bow out now before I have to drop out abruptly.

It's been fun gaming here with you all; see you around!

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

I'm afraid I haven't seen the last of Grayband and his adventurous ways.

I would say that B/X has been chosen precisely because it is not a turgid tactical fantasy combat game a la Pathfinder or modern D&D. As such no player should ever require three days to choose an action for their player if we decide that we intend to run and play Barrowmaze with the diligence, I would say, it demands for PBP. Now there may come a time when the characters have advanced sufficiently to have an array of magic items and spells at their disposal and at that time a modicum of more thinking might be required. But I don't know if that was even the case for Shadow Lord -- at least not for Jarder.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Speaking of Barrowmaze, I the game has been constructed and I have flipped on the ”Vacancy” sign. I have not posted an ad for players, as I wanted anyone from this game, and another old school game that I run, to have the chance to join in first before I opened the door for new recruits.

link to another game

I greatly appreciate everyone’s patience.

Re: The Citadel of Wendar (OOC Thread)

Well said Jarder. I often think things like doors and similar choices hold up games more than anything. I propose a Caller and Assistant Caller to keep the game moving. I usually am good for a short daily or longer post every other day, though I have seasonal responsibilities that deprive me of sleep and energy which affects my posting rate. Combats shouldn't be done so quickly that good narrative is thrown out. I think that's what makes them interesting! Anyway, I say we pick a ring-leader (not it) and play until an issue comes up and then discuss it.

BTW, applied to RTJ.

Just for everyone’s information: I intend to proceed with deleting this game in a week’s time. I wanted to be sure to alert everyone so you would have the opportunity to preserve copies of character sheets and any other information from the game that you wanted to hang on to.
