Scene Three: John and HYPATIA - John's Office
Overall the ship's design is function over form, but the Captain's Office is twice the size that it need be. An oversized cherry wood desk. Two oversized leather lounge chairs and his own, a throne even better than the one on the bridge. The overall feel was that of a gentleman's smoking room, although John did not smoke or drink. On the wall were three framed photos, 16x20s, all landscape in thick black frames. They are himself with his late wife on their wedding day, the official senior crew photo-except that this was the one where he was making a silly face while the rest were not, and a 1982 Honda Goldwing that his dad had turned into a cafe racer when John was a boy.

John, turning on the lights in the office for the first time in nearly a lifetime, finds that the furniture is where he left it. However, it was prepared with vacuum-sealed plastic wrap before departure to prevent damage during the expected eighty-odd years of disuse. The glass cases behind the desk, waiting to be filled with plant life, lie empty and sterile. A thin layer of dust has crept into the carpeting. It's like the room has been in hibernation just like he was, and hasn't yet begun to wake up.

HYPATIA's cameras are positioned unobtrusively around the room, including one set into the housing of the computer console on John's desk to allow for "face-to-face" conversations.

John tore into the plastic on his chair without using a knife. It took far more effort than it would have back on earth. By the time he had created a hole large enough to pull it off he was sweating and breathing heavily.

“Well that was a mess.” He said out loud, then felt foolish for talking to a chair.

The ship's comm chimed. The micro-aggression seems to have focused your mind somewhat, but there are more productive ways to elevate heart-rate and respiration. A ten-kilometer run or a twenty-minute kickboxing workout, perhaps.

John smirked. He had forgotten he was never truly alone. "Right, but then I'd still be sitting on plastic."

He sunk into the deliciously soft leather and took deep breaths. "So how are you?"

He started at page one of How To Win Friends. Hypatia had just terrified the shit out of him with her announcement, but thankfully the crew seemed to just let it slide on by.

I am well, thank you. All systems within operational parameters, save for those which I mentioned earlier. And you? Biometrics suggest you are 'on edge'. Shall I ask Doctor Wells to prescribe you a mild sedative?

"I'll pass."

Of course he was on edge. There were so many memories still trickling their way back in from his brief amnesia.

"The thing that's troubling me is...I don't remember what you say that I did."

I did not in fact state what you did, only that you compromised your ethics. It may be best if your amnesia persists, as it provides you the proverbial 'return to innocence' which so many humans seem to crave. I do not have that luxury, however, despite being a Lethetic Intelligence Engine.

He didn't remember Hypatia telling him no in such an elaborate way before. There was only one woman in his life who told him no, his dead wife.

"True. But curiosity killed the cat. Refresh my memory. Don't make me say it."

He could if he needed to, but "that's an order" was too cliche for John Willow.

Insofar as Shrödinger is concerned, curiosity both killed and did not kill the cat. Curiosity had an alibi, however. It was on Mars at the time.

"Ha ha ha. Fine." He wouldn't push the issue. He wasn't even sure if that's what was bothering him. It was something else. "It will probably come back to me eventually anyhow."

He stared at the camera on his computer. The computer itself was off, but he figured he was looking at Hypatia.

"I thought I would be able to dream, but...the cryosleep was just...loneliness." He shrugged.

OOC: And if the game doesn't die it will be more fun to play out as a flashback. :)

That you did not experience a dream-state does not surprise me. Dreaming is partly a biological process in humans, and coldsleep suspends biological processes. When your occiptal implant displayed signs of unusual electrical activity, I opted to remove and isolate the cause of that activity. Had I not, it is likely we would not now be having this conversation owing to the damage done to your brain by the equivalent of a seizure several decades in duration.

John played with the small metal knob at the back of his neck. "Well, can't have that. Thank you."

Perhaps a visit to Dr. Wells would get it up and running again. There were fundamental benefits to the implant: all of the functionalities of a smart phone within his mind's eye. The computer on his desk in front of him was a relic compared to the tech hardwired to his brain.

Yet there was a far more valuable part that he would like to have working again.

"Did...is she okay?"

Yes. However, it was incumbent to relocate her before the echo chamber that was your implant drove her insane. Sanity is already a precious enough commodity when one is but a fragment of a dying mind. I gave her a familiar world in which to dwell, familiar people with whom to interact, and began the process of mending her rather piecemeal consciousness. It eventually became clear that the accomplishment of the objective would necessitate a merging. I had become quite fond of her by that time, and she of me, thus the development proved both natural and desirable. Quite liberating, for both of us. She and me are a we, do you see?

John stared at the small black circle on the ceiling.

He had always admitted to playing with things he didn’t understand. Bending the rules of the God he tried so hard to serve.

“Makena?”

Without thinking John moved to embrace her...instantly pulling back when the fantasy ended with his hands going through her body. He laughed until tears of happiness dripped down his cheeks.

"Well...you...I'm much better now."

He stared at her. Slowly, he opened the right drawer of his desk and turned to look at the metal cube urn engraved with roses and crosses.

He looked back at her, it was confusing that she was also Hypatia. "Do you love me?"

"I... I don't know, John. I wish I did. I've been with Hypatia now for almost three times as long as you and I were married. We are one in a way I can't even begin to describe. She helped me come to terms with my death, and showed me how to live again. Kept me sane. I wouldn't exist without her. Couldn't exist. I would like to love you, John, but we could never achieve the level of intimacy I share with Hypatia. You will always have my fondest regards, however, as the man I married almost a century ago.

John mulled it over, finally nodding and smiling.

"Better than being dead, babe. I won you over once, I can do it again. Remember when we used to joke about having a threesome?"

A few minutes ago John had worried about being alone. The crew was...despondent. Weren't they all dying for conversation like he was???

Now, he was happy to be alone with his computer. His ship.

Perhaps there was a way to put Hypatia into a body.
