I suppose I'll start things off then.

I'm looking forward to playing with you all and to learning more about your characters.

Iain is a native of northern Zornath where he serves as a Ranger of the regions forests and woodlands as his father did before him. Loyal to the Duke, both for personal and professional reasons, Iain is a well known and normally welcome face at the hearths and homes of the areas more rural residents.

A family man in his early thirties, he lives in a modest Lodge and relies upon a small number of Journeymen and their Apprentices to patrol the vast area for which he is responsible. It is not an easy life, between maintaining the small network of small cabins and huts, regulating the taking of lumber, firewood and game by the locals as well as fulfilling specific requests for the tables of the Nobility on short notice.

Despite being empowered to enforce the local laws, Iain is of common birth and humble means. As much a regulator as an active member of the community, he helps his neighbors where he can and has developed a good reputation over the years.

The looming threat of civil war hangs heavily upon him, and he quietly fears living under a D'Astard reign. While he is no soldier, the writ that has secured his lands and pension was signed by the late Grand Duke himself, and he would see his son inherit and his lands left in peace if it can be helped by the baring of arms or some other aid to the usurped Duke.

Also looking forward to this, especially interacting with the other characters.

Runt (see description) is a guttersnipe in the capital who is a somewhat recognizable fixture around the city gates, docks, and caravan yards.  Basically anywhere that visitors to the capital are likely to be entering.  When he isn't performing for change (flute and singing rather expertly) or panhandling, he hires himself out as a guide to newcomers to the capital.

In the aftermath of the coup, he is very skittish.

Mustafa is a young river/lake trader. He was attacked one day by an estuarine shark as they sailed near the rivers mouth and he was in the water repairing the rudder. Attacking the shark with what he had to hand, he was able to run the blade of his knife through the creatures throat as he sat astride it, having managed to just dodge it's first pass. The shark was dragged ashore, and he skinned it to make the leather armour he wears regularly now.

Since then, he has learned to maintain his equipment: Leatherworking for his armour and slings, learnt from the tanner he hired to make his armour, and masonry to create smooth sling bullets from stone. Unfortunately, the upheaval in Catheran has adversely effected trade, so he finds himself looking of other work...

Looks like quite  mix we have...

We do seem to have three characters that are experts in their own environments.

A riverene merchant, a big city busker and a woodland ranger.

I'll admit, I was expecting an eastern or southern character from you Mustafa, based on the naming conventions.

How old is your character Runt?

It's actually hiding in the character description, but he is 7 1/2, but due to his small stature most folks take him to be between 5 and 6.

Couple of quick questions - well one quick and one potentially longer.

Anyway, what is starting cash?

And on the subject of money, what is the approximate size of the various coins (even though I know that there will be variables between coins due to the minting methods).

Thanks.

Starting cash is a function of your wealth level... I'd expect Runt is Poor or close to it...  so a -15 disadvantage...

Money size/diameter is as follows:
    Copper/Bronze Coins
Farthing -  1 Cm or .40 inches
Half Pennies - 2 Cm or .8 Inches
1 Copper Penny - 2.5 Cm or 1 inch
    Silver Coins
Silver Piece or Stag - 1.25 Cm or ½ inch
5 sp is a Florin - 2.5 Cm or 1 inch
    Gold Coins
10 sp is a crown - 1 Cm or .40 inches
1 gp is a sovereign - 1.5 Cm or .60 inches
5 gp is a pound, or Guinea -  2.5 Cm or 1 inch

Thickness varies a bit, with Farthings and Crowns being rather thin and the Penny, florin and Pound being a bit thicker.
The Crown is not popular as it is so easy to lose ... the rest are regularly used... farthings are easy to lose too, but no one much cares.

Sorry, poorly asked there, I meant Average starting wealth ($1000 or $2000).

Ah, I'm guessing that the crown is a gold coin.  And Runt would care about losing a farthing.  On the other hand, since they are easily lost by people who aren't bothered by that, he just might find a nice amount of lost ones (his eyes are much closer to the ground ;-) ).

Thanks for the answers.

Depending on which sources and time periods, a medieval Ranger is like a minor office. An individual paid by the nobility to maintain and protect a certain stretch of rural area. The older version of our current Park Rangers.

Fantasy Rangers that have cropped up in modern fiction tend to be more protecting nature for nature's sake, might know magic, and would normally have some sort of unusually intelligent animal following them around.

Some Ranger Lodges were sort of like small fortified buildings or compounds apparently, especially later in history. I suppose it makes sense when you live in the middle of nowhere and have a dangerous job.

Truth is I have looked at all of them Applied to 4, got accepted to three.

One game I think I overwhelmed gm with all the allies I wanted, started making a backstory for all them, was actually turning into a book...lol

I was really getting into it.

I think I made him say you know what I will just keep the guys I had.

The travelers games seemed nice too, but never really played those.

I might in the end applying to them all, but I have to see how much each one demands of me.

I have done similar things in the past, then all of a sudden them all become active and I am like oh crap, I am either posting one liners, or writing 3 hours.

I know what you mean, I have run across more than a few talented writers here on RPoL that have inspired me to up my game.

As far as the GURPS system is concerned, yeah, it might be aging. I see an absolute ton of Free Form games being played, people seem to like that, but even the new games coming out seem to be very minimal, and some don't even include things like character death.

It's pretty much becoming story time, or failing that, things you can play half drunk around a table without much effort.

I definitely agree.

But too me once I found GURPs, most other system became meh.

Love the Idea, of designing your guy the way you want him, within the limits of points and the gaming world's reality.

I usally got other systems only if I have joined all the gurps games I wanted to join and my rping itch still ain't scratched.

I have even tried discord sessions.

In the in this play by post is most best route for me, you play, reread and has super flexible schedule.

I have tried free-form games and some are real good stories.

The best type where the God games. Where each God had like one action, and the GM narrated the results.

But without rules, most free form games  kinda grew stale too me.

I don't want to be slaughtered by gm, but have a chance to die, makes it fun to play.

Though it would suck to make a new character its all part of the fun when done right.

@ Kory Dear

Dude, couple of things that you may have overlooked.  Runt is 7 1/2 years old so girls (as such) are unimportant to him.  In Message 74 in the Crisis thread, Runt found the knife and some coinage
quote:
6 copper and 5 silver pieces
, and the other guy found the other coinage
quote:
farthings, ha-pennies and a single copper... total of 2 Copper , a ha-penny and a farthing
.  And Leesha is only a bit older than Runt (Message #2)
quote:
then another urchin, a slightly older girl who looks close to starvation makes for it.

Go a bit further east and you could die of starvation on the side of the road before anyone stopped to help.

I guess that's the purpose of amour, Either way, even a 2hp bullet wound is probably going to make anyone lose the will to continue in a fight, especially if it 'hits' the vitals. Also any shot to the face will probably put them out, and I think most people would be more concerned with running away after having been hit in the arm!

Anyway, if you have people shooting at you, you're doing it wrong!

Actually we need to define the terms carefully, for a craft skill ... 12 makes you a master level, 13 a master among masters... at 14 you are widely recognized in your county, barony, state etc. 15 makes you known by everyone involved in that skill/craft nationwide and 16 starts to make you known by folks who aren't in your field nationwide.  BUT there are a great many modifiers.  Public actors are likely better known while folks doing underhanded or boring work are less well known; the TL affects communications so everyone is not as widely known in lower TLs ... there is more, as always in GURPS, everything is vague.

what?

Skill level 12 in a craft makes you a master?

We have very very different understanding of what master level is - I'd have guuessed that people wouldn't start calling you a master at anything until you're skill level 15+

I thought that 12 is basically 'professional standard' level.

not

Like a title rather than a 'level' of skill?

Like, no soldier is going to be called a master swordsman at skill 12, right? So i presume that the 'master' is just the honorofic title of someone achieving the level to be professional and running his own shop.

Just want to clarify, by asking for more detail, I certainly mean no disrespect.

I do appreciate all the time you have put into this game, your historical view point is awesome, and you attention to detail in things like rules for infection, etc runs right in line with my own thinking.

But things like attempting a night time raid, I do expect a bit of detail to make appropriate decisions. The general layout, darkness penalties, etc. Iain is built like a hunter, he relies heavily on stealth, so going from a rough outline of a plan, to getting spotted, Is a very abrupt shift from my point of view.

Did nobody in this group see such a guard? Did they stop under cover to assess for sentries? How far away might such a man be? All of this is very important for this kind of attempt, and I'm trying to double check that nothing has been missed.

I know such people and so feel it's a valid DisAd, but what is it worth?  for "controls his instincts often on a 12 or less" perhaps a -5?
Say -10 for a control on a 9 or less; -15 for a control on a 6 or less?

I think as default, it'd work as a -5 trait.

Something aking to greed/selfishness in the level it manifests.

I think if it was up to -10 it'd be outright hostility to being told what to do.

and at -15 it's aggression and threatening behaviour when reacting to people telling them what to do.

I think however you could go the way of having it activated in differnt ways, like tolerance for it.
and the ways you suggested seem to work.

In reality it's a negative reaction that's results of some compulsion inside, it could be modelled off obsessive behaviour, but it's certainly a minor one.

"Go do this"
[-5] "Yea, sure</sarcasm" then doesn't do it
[-10] "Go fuck yourself, dont tell me what to do"
[-15] "You keep telling me what to do and i'm going to put this bottle through your fucking face you fat useless son of a fucking whore".

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)

Has a frequent and persistent pattern of anger, irritability, arguing, defiance or vindictiveness toward you and other authority figures, he or she may have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).

Sometimes it's difficult to recognize the difference between a strong-willed or emotional child and one with oppositional defiant disorder.

Angry and irritable mood:

    Often and easily loses temper
Is frequently touchy and easily annoyed by others
    Is often angry and resentful

Argumentative and defiant behavior:

Often argues with adults or people in authority
Often actively defies or refuses to comply with adults' requests or rules
Often deliberately annoys or upsets people
Often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior

Vindictiveness:

    Is often spiteful or vindictive
Has shown spiteful or vindictive behavior at least twice in the past six months

ODD can vary in severity:

Mild. Symptoms occur only in one setting, such as only at home, school, work or with peers.

Moderate. Some symptoms occur in at least two settings.

Severe. Some symptoms occur in three or more settings.

I like what I am seeing, although it seems like a very risky thing to take in a feudal setting.

Somebody with such a thing in a modern setting, maybe some contempt of court, disorderly conduct.

Somebody in the right part of feudal Europe?

I'll agree with what Padraig said in #183.  Also with what Iian said in #185, and possibly some of what Kory said in #187 (but maybe not 2x value).  But it is going to be very dangerous to use and I'm leaning towards a quirk level version if any, but probably it might be best to just use it as flavor and characterization (as in no points) for the time being.  But our GM might want to consider giving Kory some bonus CPs for good role-playing if he uses it well.

You also might bounce the idea off the folks in the Gurps Community Lounge on this site or even asking about it over on the Steve Jackson Games site.

In other news, I've had a computer crash and will probably not have access back until Friday.  Just go on without me, I'll catch up.

Just curious, balanced projectiles are x5 cost. So Balanced Lead pellets for a sling cost $0.5 each, so how much are balanced sling stones (Which are normally free!!!)?

Also, what is the effect of Fine for Sling Bullets? +1 damage? That would make Fine, balanced sling bullets +1 to skill, +1 damage, $0.7 each. Fine Balanced Silver bullets would be $2.60 each, and likewise be +1 to skill and +1 to damage. Fine Balanced Stone bullets would still be free and +1 to sill and damage <Cheeky grin>?

In reply to Mustafa Zephyr (msg # 200):

OK, let apply some logic here.
A fine sling is improbable, but possible given how a sling is made.  They give a +1. Silver bullets give a +1 to creatures affected by silver.
Sling bullets that are carefully cast w/o air holes and which are symmetrical are believable.
Now you could make heavy sling bullets, which don't fly as far but thump harder on arrival ... I think Gurps has something to this effect in it.
Sling stones are made by nature and already gathered and sorted for size and weight ... in theory, earth magic could make fine stones, but since we don't have any of that... not possible.

Fine Balanced projectiles should be the same thing... it simply means that the shaft is straight, the tips and Feathers are of the same size and weight (or very close) and care has been taken in making the whole projectile.  It is more accurate but not more powerful. Yes, flying straight could prevent some loss of velocity , thus arriving with more power, but I am not going to cut hairs that finely.  They get a +1 to hit.

Well probably slightly smaller than a Golf ball.  That would be the heavy pellet. A normal pellet would be in the 20-25 mm (about ¾ to an inch in diameter) and weigh about an ounce (just over 28 grams). The Heavy pellet would be about twice the diameter and roughly 4 times the weight. Range would be about 2/3s of the light pellets and damage gets a +1 at extended range and +2 at short range.

That'sa SWAG... didn't even try and look it up.

Re: OOC-1

In reply to Kory Dear (msg # 207):

Read through relevant sections in a bit more detail. Can be taken of left as desired.

GURPs Low tech actually has a Heavy Sling, which flings 1 lb projectiles, as opposed to projectiles weighing 1/20 lbs used in a standard sling. They are slower and have less range, but do +2 damage. I would say a balanced sling has a better release mechanism, allowing more accurate release. Reading carefully the fine print, LT only grants a missile weapon an additional 20% range, since it's projectile does cr or pi damage.

However, those are just modifications to the weapon itself that increase the cost from a mere silver piece to much more than that for a fine and balanced weapon.

The ammunition can, according to Basic, also be modified to be better quality(B277).  A perfectly round ball will fly truer than one with knobs on it, justifying the balanced attribute increasing the users skill. Lead pellets double range and increase damage by +1 (B276) over stone projectiles. Unshaped stone projectiles give -1 to hit (LT78). Shaped Sling stones are actually given as costing $0.06/stone, or $0.10 for a heavy sling (LT78).

Low Tech also has a lovely large table of Weapons of Quality, P59. It gives the +4 CF for Balanced missile weapons or projectiles, and +2 CF for fine projectiles, increasing damage by 1 for cutting or impaling weapons only, so no actual benefit for a sling stone! For missile weapons, Fine gives +20% range for +3 CF, giving limited benefit to the short-ranged sling, changing range to x7.2/12 for a normal sling and x3.6/7.2 for a heavy sling. Better using lead bullets...

Silver has a +19 CF, and only has extra effects of creatures with vulnerability to silver. Otherwise, they are no better than a regular sling stone.

So in short, only using lead bullets gives a +1 to damage, though finer quality slings will give better accuracy, significantly so if using a fine sling costing $200 with balanced lead projectiles that cost $0.5 instead of $0.1. This will give a range of x14.4/24 and an Acc of +1 if the sling cost goes up to $280. All with the rules of Low Tech, of course. But the principle of you get what you pay for stands. How much of this is being used?

I'm sorry...  but indeed your actions and those of an NPC or two make this a very likely outcome, given the bitter ugly people (not you) involved.

There was no pre-written story, just a background that each of you have interacted with. Each of you has a very different character, in a different place, going through different events.  I can't tell you how the story will unfold, although I do have an ultimate ending in mind for sometime in the future.

Please don't ... It is a very difficult spot ... I am working to portray a debased nobility who despise everyone not their equal...
In seizing and tying up the Butler with his seal of the Baron, you affronted the Baron ... in his mind you may as well have seized and tied him up.  He is retaliating as an ugly vicious lord would (and did in history)...  let me  bring it full circle. Re: OOC-1

I should preface this with saying that I really take no issue with you personally, I was serious when I said that you have several great qualities as a GM.

By the same token I have never been one to shy away from the kind of harsh realities you are trying to portray. I knew as much when I saw your premise, and I chose to include dependents. The entire reason they exist is to be put at risk, so it's not the brutality of the scene.

It's the linear approach and lack of options that I am taking issue with.

In my humble opinion of course, when you put a problem forth to a player, you have to give them a fair amount of information up front, and you have to give them options.

It was an issue in the scene where one of Iain's men turned traitor, it was an issue during the scene with the friendly sentries, and it's an issue now.

The scene with the barons man was obvious bait. I would hazard to say the dependents risk roll was never made, nor was his reaction roll, nor was any kind of reaction to Iain's attempted diplomacy. He was either going to be attacked, or he was going to report failure to his superior. It was a forgone conclusion from the beginning, hence his miraculous escape and cross country trek. As I said...they were doomed the moment they got put on the sheet.

You had an idea how you wanted it to go as a GM, and you went there in a narrative fashion, which is fine...to a point.

In a game with five players, running for the better part of two months, we have not even cleared a single refresh in the dice roller. With multiple combats.

It's story time, and we are along for the ride.

Again, nothing wrong with this for certain types of players, but if I'm going to invest my time, I expect at the minimum enough detail to make informed choices, and a fighting chance with a certain amount of transparency.

In conclusion, this rapid fire, minimal description/mechanics approach is fine for many, but personally I think I am looking for something a little different.

So in the spirit of being fellow gamers just looking to have some fun, I do wish you luck, but having seen a fair bit of your format now, I still believe that this is probably not one for me.

Re: OOC-1

I appreciate your candor, and I'll take you up on that offer.

I really don't mean to be a difficult player, and I appreciate Kory suggesting that we can all learn from each other. I have my own things to work on, I'll be the first to admit.

If I might make a suggestion, we could start playing "open hand" for most GM rolls. This might bring us closer to that table top like atmosphere, and I think it would help foster discussion as a group.

You are still the GM of course, a game can't run without a strong driving force and an arbiter to make the final calls, but we might be able to remind each other back and forth, or make suggestions going forward. At the very least it will help us get an idea of where you are coming from.

I really do appreciate you taking the time to run this for us. But I do think it will be more interesting in the long run if we start to put a little more onus on the players to make the tough decisions.

For example, instead of "The Baron is angered via X, and an attack occurs, setting the scene for the next chapter"

It could be something along the lines of "The Baron is angered because the player botched the scene, and an attack occurs, forcing him to choose between duty and family." There is still some high drama there, and potentially a sense of loss, but the latter case involves more role play and individual character skills instead of a player more or less reacting to a script.

I would be interested to hear the other players opinions as well of course, and thanks again for working with us.

Re: OOC-1

So,

I have experienced the railroading thing and been slightly irritated by it. I think i first noticed it back when i played in the GM's other game as 'Kallikrates' and was having a sparring session with the captain of the guard, or something.

But ultimately, I've stuck to the game because the GM is good, and he does constantly create and drive new stories. I find sometimes that the change of pace of posting, short, quick posts versus long descriptive posts are both needed, and reflecting the 'heartbeat' of the game and in a lot of cases this works out well. Occasionally, people might be working to a different beat though and maybe that's where sometimes the disparity happens.

But really, I think part of it is on the player to explain precisely what matters to them. A GM can only formulate a plot or story to a certain granularity, or provide a limited amount of processing to things going on, and may have emphasis on different parts of that story.

That, I think is why this kind of thing happens.

In my experience, a lot of the solution just comes from some meta-gaming OOC communication. Very often i might write too quickly or poorly to fully convey parts of my intention or plan or even what I'm intending to do - so i'll add "to GM" notes to such posts to explain my thinking and give ideas about what the character is ofcusing on, what then plan is and my guesses as to how he expects his actions to effect change in the world.

I do also agree that tough decisions that aren't per-ordained or 'easy' are very nice to have in a game and really add layers and texture to the world. Not everything is black and white, good or evil, etc.

This kind of thing really is just about providing good two-way communication between GM<->Players and managing the expectations of each.

Well said. GM is good, and has good attitude. Emotions where high last night hopefully they work it out, since time has past.

Yep communication was key and communication before meltdown in pm.

Problem is player gave message and left without giving gm chance to correct style.

Gm stated he is willing to adjust his style.

If player stuck around or chooses to come back.

and they communicate, everyone wins.

As I said I feel for player.
But also know we got great gm willing to work with players to keep game fun.

That quality alone makes him Great Gm.

Story can be learned.
Game mechanics can be learned
GMing can be learning (Balancing story and game)

Nothing is unfixable.

Sure it might be a little less satisfying to roll back an event, but doing so would fix  issue. GM was will to roll for stuff and fix issues.

Not give player a win, but offer player a fair chance to save his family.

That's a good gm who realized his mistake and took action to correct it.
Now its in players hands.

Both are human both got frustrated.
Communication did happen (Above player message)
Change and Correction was offered (Above GM message)
AND they will still need to work together and chat to find right balance between (Story and game)

Solution
Padraig MacTire:
This kind of thing really is just about providing good two-way communication between GM<->Players and managing the expectations of each.

One of the forms I submitted to gm during my long silence in posting
When we was talking.

Site has many more questions to flesh out your character
https://www.plus1gaming.com/20...-character-creation/

This is just the bottom section of website (edited)

Player

These five questions direct your play experience itself rather than your character. What do you want out of your game? If a group answers these together, they can expect dramatically rewarding game sessions, and the GM will know clearly what’s expected to give everyone a good time.

What kind of story does your character belong in?
Street level -- gang warfare type game

Who are the characters your character interacts with?

These things are important to understand so your GM can create adventures that will engage your character, and so you will have a better chance at getting along with your fellow players’ characters.

What role does your character fill?
Probably Stealth Killer type

Roleplaying is all about the ensemble cast. Make sure you fill a unique role in the party, and you aren’t stepping on anyone else’s toes. Consider your role in the interpersonal relations of the party, your role in combat, what skills your character is best at, and what thematic note your character hits.

What is your play style?

Do you like heavy character immersion, or attention to detail in the rules, or perhaps you’re especially goal-oriented? Here I gave him a mess

Goal oriented -- with detail for clues and hints to next goal
Wanted rules -- but not overburdened by them (nor so rule lax it was freeform)
Wanted detail -- but not overwhelmed by it (told him I gloss over too much detail)

Maybe you’re a bit competitive.
Not into pvp -- but if done right might be fun

Do you speak in your character’s voice? You may not even be aware of your own play style. Keep this in mind as you play so you can better communicate with your fellow players about the direction of the party as a whole, and the course of the adventure. This also helps your GM understand your personal needs at the gaming table.

How do you want your character to die?
In Revenge attempt or attempting to rescue girls. Preferably one against many with many dead by my hand.

Your character won’t live forever, although you might not play him or her to the end. If you had your choice of deaths for your character, what would it be?

There was another question on there. (in a different section.)

If your character had everything they wanted what would make them adventure?
To rescue Girls
To save someone Loyal to me
To add new girl to mix.
For Vengeance
To handle problem for one of girls
(and we designed them girls with Problems personalities--turn ons--histories--they even have birthdays --plenty of threads for gm to use in a pinch---lol)

Finally, it can help your GM in resolving conflicts in-game if he or she has an idea of your comfort zone with threats to your character’s life.

It would suck if one of my girls died.

And no I didn't answer every question. But I answered the ones I could and submitted it to gm.

Re: OOC-1

One more question I asked gm, I asked him to tell me in his eye's who my character was.
I honestly expected to rewrite his answer better.
But he described him so Beautifully,
I couldn't respond and surrendered.

Finger of Fate:
He is an arranger, getting men laid in the manner they'd like.  He is always looking for new girls, as they do wear out in time. If you can't pull your weight, you are just s drag on the working part of the group and you are out. It's cold, but he is not running a charity.

Kory can hold his own if someone gets mouthy or pushy, and can deal with someone trying to steal his money.  He can keep the girls in line , as he is the boss, the sweetness stuff is fine, but if push comes to shove, Kory's word is law among the girls and he can and will exact discipline if need be.

He does all the dealing with the Guild. if one of the girls is doing a trick with a guild leader, that's fine, but she best talk about EDITED and nothing else. Kory's business relies on him knowing more than anyone else. Start talking about other things and it could go very badly for you.  He is not abusive however, as he also knows that those girls are what brings in the money ... how much, only he knows. He takes care of the girls as an investment and because he needs  a steady source of EDITED (see his uncontrollable appetite for EDITED).

He is an opportunist and will grab a chance to make money any way he can, so long as he isn't going to get in trouble with the guild.

That's pretty much how I see him .... note that he is a big information gatherer, which means he could be useful to people needing information.

Honestly Kory is 90%+ what gm described. (with me nit picking the last 10%)

Re: OOC-1

In reply to Iain Woodward (msg # 228):

I think much of this is a basic difference in how we do things. I have never reset a dice log in all the years I've been on rpol.

I quit rolling public GM die back in the late 1970's having watched a game all but ruined by a lucky die roll (would have killed the protagonist without revealing anything of import to the game); The GM rolled his dice behind a screen, got essentially rubbish and declared the protagonist had rolled a critical success to avoid the hit, then picked up his dice.  The game continued on and everyone had a good time solving the mystery ...  I felt I had learned something.
I have seen games come to an unhappy end under similar situations where the GM either couldn't or didn't fudge things. The Games sort of dribbled to a stop, as there was no longer a connection between the problem and the solution, and people weren't interested in playing those GMs games anymore.  As always, there is a balance between keeping the story alive and outcomes.

AS for giving you a heads up about things about to happen ... I am not following you. Are you used to the GM warning you that bad things are about to happen?  The VC warn you that you are about to step on a mine or that there is an ambush around the next corner? That the Baron has decided he hates you because you are on his wife's side.   That the shadowy figure ratting to the enemy might be one of your guys? or that one of your guys is about to do a bad stupid?   I am sorry, I don't understand what you think I should be doing. We have obviously been playing in quite different styles.

Having reread your message, I should explain... we are all in this together or it isn't a game and it isn't fun. I am not perfect.  I'm not sure I understand your PoV, but I am open to adjusting within reason.  Sending you off with a bad taste is the last thing any of us want.

Re: OOC-1

When I say transparency, it's not giving away secrets, so much as understanding that we are playing by an agreed upon rule set.

GURPS is notoriously "crunchy", it's very granular, it uses a lot of rules and generally a lot of numbers to help flesh out a narrative.

The environment where I learned to play it was around a table top, everybody saw all the dice, except those skills or situations which were explicitly designed to be rolled in secret.

This is not automatically detected an ambush or knowing the enemies intentions, it's simple and obvious things, like an enemies attempt to dodge. The environment I played in was lethal, and people lost characters. They were that much more careful going forward with the next one.

But at the same time the rules were obvious and fair. Everything down to the time of day and weather penalties, we used a lot of hex grids, there was no general gist of things...you entered a new scene and you got a good description of what you were looking at before you made any decisions. If it was pertinent, it was provided.

As I have mentioned, there seems to be a lot of hand waving in the interest of time saving. "The prisoner escapes" is not something that arbitrarily happens. There are perception rolls, there is fatigue involved for cross country travel, there are penalties for an unfamiliar area. It's possible, but it comes down to the dice.

If we are going for "free form" with a roll here and there, that is a very different environment. And I'll admit, that's the feeling I am getting.

I am probably guilty of that, as I try to  update every thread daily. Family sometimes resents my addiction and rushes me ...  so I tend to roll dice and push results at my desk.

Feel free to raise it as an issue when I do it, as I am sure I will ... human nature.

I have tried free form (Fudge) and got very negative feed back. It gathers dust on the shelf. I very much think that it is story above rules and dislike being told that rule x on page y of book z says that you can do...  That said, we are playing GURPS, not GM's Whim.  I have most of the relevant books right behind me, but often want to keep the thought and drive on, rather than stop and read the details.
One of the reason's there is no Magic in this game is all the variations upon variations that crop up in it. Alchemy is limited enough and less well known, so I haven't had those issues, yet anyway; but it still allows useful effects most of us would love to have access to.

Any way, I'll try to amend my ways with everyones help. It may take some work as we geezers are set in our ways.

It does. And it's appreciated.

I'm sure there is a happy medium. I'm not trying to rules lawyer you to death either.

I really like that this is a non magical setting, that was a huge selling point for me, and I agree with Kory that we are both concerned for realism, albeit in different ways. I think we are trying to get to the same place.

I'm willing to try and make it work, and I think we have told a decent story thus far. I'm going to try and not question you at every turn, and try to flow with the general feel of the story.

For what it's worth, I would be for cutting the posting rate in Iain's thread in return for a little more detail if it comes down to time management.

GURPS can be a ponderous beast, especially trying to reference everything. I have had GMs in the past house rule certain things...like no reaction rolls for example. If that sort of thing would help at all, it might be worth discussing.

We can talk gaming philosophy to death, but I hope that this has not come off as anything personal. We are here to have fun after all.

So actually the granularity I think is something that gets sorted out depending on the character one makes.

I think it's okay to gloss over some things - for example:

If you make a warrior character, that has a lot of the development in martial and military things, you may care a lot about more decision/tactical combat but less so about some of the social things in 'social engineering'. The opposite might be true if you make a bard-like courtier.

In reply to Finger of Fate (msg # 248):

I have not actually been ignoring the posts...on the contrary, as a GM who runs a game that is very much a 'sandbox' game (but in a very different environment!), it is interesting to hear others points of view on gaming style. Personally, I am not a fan of railroading, but my character, perhaps because of the way I play him, has not been. But I do as GM try to play the opposition as intelligent and, at time, evil as required. That can mean that vital NPCs are caught in the crossfire, though I will allow a way out, though the players do not always find it.

I personally find a higher rate of short posts can be more involving at times than long-winded monologues, so I do find the comment interesting that Iain would be in favour of cutting the number in favour of increasing the content, as in my mind that would reduce player input! But that is just my take, so I learn by watching!

Re: OOC-1

Found this to
So now not sure.

http://gameinthebrain.blogspot...ive-check-based.html

 GURPS Making Initiative Check Based
Initiative is a score that player rolls for his character where his margin of success and failure determines his order in initiative.

Initiative is Tactics roll with SPDx2 OR IQ. If the character does not have Tactics, they can default to -6, Strategy-6 or Soldier-4. Combat Reflex adds +1 to Initiative.

In the beginning of Combat everyone rolls initiative.

SPD 6.00, CR, Soldier IQ+2 has an Initiative-11
SPD 5.00, IQ12, Tactics IQ+1 has Initiative-13

Double rewarding SPD.
A smarter person may think faster and be slower in combat, but his physical speed will be reflected in Movement and Dodge NOT in the order in which he acts. Because of Wait maneuver a faster thinking character Waits and uses his faster thinking to Prepare and Predict the outcome. Of course if his prediction is wrong, he gets screwed so it balances out.

So a Faster Character may Act Fast in the sense that in the second he may travel farther and dodge better but it doesnt mean they can bring actions and plans online faster than a smarter quick-thinking character.

In GURPS it is not clear that the "start" of combat, those who have not acted is considered "flat-footed" like in DnD. You can still defend as though you came from a "Do nothing" turn in the very beginning of combat.

I like using the Core Mechanic through out the system when it is possible. Using a 3d6 Check for initiative benefits the bell curve and makes for some random variables in combat.

I was delighted to see the updated post, not just the family angle of course, but that we were looking at a fight that could easily go either way.

This sort of thing was exactly what I was referring to, and the GM really outdid himself with the map as well. Good stuff.

Re: OOC-1

The second post is a home brew, he seems to like the additional random variable, and feels that intelligence should factor in more instead of relying mostly on the HT and DX which determines Basic Speed normally.

Core Rules, it's just Basic Speed, highest to lowest.

Low Tech, it's the same but factoring the "matter of inches" rules, people with longer limbs or longer weapons logically get first attacks despite having lower speeds.

This allows say, a slower person with a spear, to get a stab at an attacker with a knife regardless of Basic Speed.

We can go with whatever the GM likes of course, but if you were looking for the official stuff, that's it.

I'll say this he is giving you an honest effort to give you type of game you like.

I am no gurps expert, and you have said you'll compromise doing what gm likes best.
Which is good of you.

Officially you remembered correctly.

Turn Sequence

It's probably a carry over from 3e or earlier... since I don't have every single soldier as more than  shell, I figured rolling initiative was a smoother way to go... it also avoids the various rolls when multiple people have 5.5, 5.75 or 6 as a basic speed. Basically I am trying to keep things moving w/o lots of side rolls for this or that.

In simple one on one combat basic Speed is not a problem usually.

Re: OOC-1

Cool, this is good.

So impaling, piercing, etc against limbs is x1, cutting is normal. This supposedly represents the lack of "vital organs" in limbs.

So the Sons damage is correct via core rules, the wife's could be reduced if you wanted to use that rule.

Damage is only multiplied once, after having been subtracted by armor.

So in the example of vitals, you were correct, 6 imp damage, reduced by 2 thanks to armor, results in 4 "penetrating" damage, that 4 is multiplied by 3, resulting in 12 damage, a major wound to be certain.

Feel free to roll Iain's defense if you would like, I'll give a target number, to help speed things along.

Here is a handy little chart.

There is also the pain penalties to factor, if you would like. People who are injured generally take a penalty to actions the next round equal to damage dealt. Unless they have something like High Pain Threshold, etc.

I'd agree, ugly.

But I tried to stay true to character. Iain had to go toe to toe against trained, armored swordsmen, his family was in danger.

He comes from a humble background, no real armor, a hunting bow, and a knife.

This should give him ample motivation to seek out better equipment and training in the future. He knows what he is in for after that fight, and now, it's personal :)

Absolutely, yeah.

It was a good fight, a hard fight, but there seemed to be a real chance of varying degrees of success or failure. Had Iain died himself trying to get to his family, I would have certainly understood, and probably would have asked to roll up another character.

Although his wife did perish in the fight, I feel at least something was "earned" through the scene, even if it was only keeping his sons alive.

My theory
Its made from Tithril, a rare metal that only female's may wear.
It function's by drawing male gazes and attracting missile attacks away from the non-armored body-parts.

An unfortunate side effect of wearing the armor; is that during melee attack, the armor
sometime drags the wearer.

You should see her block a swords!

In terms of landmass, the United States and Europe are similar in size—the United States is 9,833,000 square kilometers while Europe is 10,180,000 square kilometers—however, European countries are closer in size to eastern states in America (which are smaller and closer together than western states).

The player, that is me, doesn't care but the character, Runt, does care and does remember this stuff.  He might be uneducated but he does have a good memory, especially about money and what he owes to other people and what other people owe to him.  As far as how much he believes he is owed - in the IC thread (while they were still in the warehouse) Runt asked for 1 penny per bottle (msg #230) and Padraig agreed to pay that (msg #232).  Later at the abandoned house, the Guildsman promised at least a gold each for Runt and Leesha (msg #253), though he won't nag the Guildsman about it.

Moving will allow us to be seen, though. I got from your description that the underbrush was not so thick, and on horseback, they would be on us fast, so if we try to run, they will cut us down before we can get anywhere near back to the boats, which are a mile or so behind us, at least.

Re: OOC-1

No, the underbrush is thicker than that, the horse could force their way through, but could get seriously cut up if infantry stood and fought there; the lower branches would also be a threat.

Behind you is an open area of say 50 meters before there is another wooded area with a small feeder creek and a little gully in it ... these small wooded areas along the river continue all along the banks, often due to small drainage gullies. You'd guess the Boats are 4-500 meters behind you anyway.

Re: OOC-1

Well, I used you mass combat rules and the ones I have (the original ones I think ... charts are the same).

You attacked with 10 bowmen, then had 15 foot attack.
The 10 bowmen dropped most of the guards and a couple of those who jumped up to fight ... 7 total
That took the enemy down to 18 men with a 15% loss off the top
You beat them by 3 in the modified Die roll IIRC which put them down by 5 (3x 1.8 more and you lost 3 (2x 1.5)
I assumed losses are cumulative and the enemy was now down 50% ... you again beat him on the die roll by a more substantial amount ... you lost 10% and he was wiped out, with 100% casualties.  Bowmen didn't even get a second shot (takes a turn to cock a crossbow and that is really quick).

I used a pretty simple die roll to generate light, moderate and serious injuries. 1-2 = light, 3-4 = Moderate etc.
Enemy got a lot of 6s ... should not have let me touch the dice.

Then I rerolled in the Morning 6 = dead, 3,4,5 = still questionable, 1 or was doing better
At the end of the day I only rolled for for the questionable ones ... 6s were much too common as you saw.

Sorry... spent all day with my brother in the hospital for a Kidney STONE  removal procedure which didn't go as smoothly as planned; he's fine but I am feeling brain dead. He threw a temper tantrum over having to wear one of those obscene hospital gowns. such are difficult when dealing with an 84 year old man. I dreaded having to take him and it lived up to every expectation.

I had noticed ...  So you are still up in Freehold with Melinda. Your father has recovered some (nice to have the kids home and safe) ... The army has moved South.
You have recruited something like 356 deserters from the enemy's army. A surprising number are concerned about their Families back home and with the 30 Sergeants that turned loyalist, you have a small but significant force. Arming them hasn't been hard as quite a few kept their weapons and the cast off stuff from the Noble Army's rout filled in all the holes.
Your father suggests you take a small loyal body guard and lead these guys back south, he'd like them away from Freehold.

You should be able to take it from there ... figure about 3 weeks have passed; Melinda has been good company and a big help, day and night.

LoL... There are multiple row boats each with a crossbowman in the bow.
Hitting anything is hard, but a good roll will do it ... Your guy failed any sort of defensive roll and got hit ... it could be much worse.
Had you not hung back, you likely have beaten all these twinkies and been out of the harbor by now ...
Your sailors are rowing hard ...  your soldiers are fighting as best they can ... The small boats have two men rowing, one steering and one up front shooting. You had 4 soldiers IIRC, two shooting and two loading crossbows to maintain rate of fire ... Now there is only one guy up front. The new Passenger is attending to the wounded man and seems reasonably competent.

Ok. We will make sure we get someone assisting in reloading the crossbow then, and keep 2 operating. If we have that number, we should be firing every third round then (1 round to aim, 1 to change and 1 to fire). Are they? Women and kids can take the place of fast draw (ammo) in that case...

I hung back because others were not equipped to deal with this as well as we are. Being in a bigger boat also has advantages...we should also have some cover they would not have.

How many crossbowmen threaten us in total?

Well with the one you fouled up, only 5 remain in the chase and only three are anywhere close enough to be a threat.

@ FoF - If it's ok to ask, are the "three stories" fiction books you're writing? Or plots for (other) RPGing?

***

@ Mustafa - Maybe together we can work up a package/idea that FOF and adopt/adapt and feed back to us?
e.g. I (the player) would be interested in doing some in-your-face combat. (Actually fighting stuff rather than sitting on the top of a hill directing troops with flags or whatever). It's completely fine if that's versus bandits, ogres, undead or whatever the flavour of the day is. We'd probably need to finesse it so that the interacton is off the books, i.e. the PCs directly rather than as leaders of small armies.
e.g. it's either an ambush, or something "off the books", so maybe one of Amelia's darl secrets, or some vendetta of Mustafa or, perhaps, someone threatening the woodlands (which would engage Kenyan). What are your thoughts?

I have a really strong yearning for a dose of the old fashioned way.

(had a couple of tough days and feeling like I want to throttle something. In DnD, that's def orcs. Don't know how tough they are in GURPS. I do recall being shocked how touch orcs were in Rolemaster - about as tough as trolls in AD&D versus a level 2 PC party).

I doesnt have to be integrated to the manin story/campaign, although it can be; a side trek is often a nice change of pace and context.  :)

So, Mustafa, what thoughts have you that def lend themselves to Mustafa & Kenyan dealing with it in person (rather then in the safety of having dozens and dozens on troops around)? COuld be as simple as the pair are doing a tour of the estates and they encounter <whatever it is> obviously that's subject to greography etc but, frankly, I have no grip or concept on that at all.

Well lots to answer.
I tend to not do lots of combat with Lords leading from the front... however we ceratainly can do that.
I am just trying to pull some ideas together.

As for stories, I write for myself and post a few.  All are fiction. I can send one to you Bluedwarf, as I have your email., if you care. May not be of the least interest tho.

I'm certainly no hit, but then Stories on Line has a bent toward sex stories of the worst sort.
Those of us just writing stories tend to get lost there. But it is a good place to hone your skills, as there are a lot of nice people there who are willing to help edit ad suggest changes to the storyline , thus a Stick it out and just avoid the poo Piles.

As for Orcs, I play three types, Snaga, Standard and Uruk. Each is somewhat different in skills, outlook and goals. The different species do not necessrily like each other.

I understand you want the party together, but you are actually proving my point. With the information you are giving me, light infantry will be the best in a moist or swampy setting, and I would be a fool not to take advantage of it. So far, we have been forced to fight on their terms, and it honestly feels like our combat has been railroaded, but now with cavalry in a swamp, we might finally be able to turn that around.

Further, for them to run from us is to run to Kenyan. I did not head off in secret, so he would be well aware of where I was. The horn would be closer to him than to the enemy, because they are behind us, and therefore between us and Kenyan...

No, Your infantry is typical heavy infantry, as they wear armor on torso, arms, head and legs, along with water and gear.

These horses have a rider, a light saddle and the rider has some water, a bow, some arrows and maybe a light leather shield.
They all have a knife and most have acheap sword ... but they are very lightly armed.
The horses sink in six to eight inches, so can't gallop, but they can move around fairly well.
Your men sink in almost 6 inches as well (some more and others less).

So, are you going to attack the light horse bewtween you and safety (presumably)?
Do something else?

Re: OOC-1

In reply to Finger of Fate (msg # 598):

A heavy infantryman is usually wearing about 60 lbs of gear in battle, and weighs no more than 270 lbs, general no more than 200 lbs average, so a total of about 120 kg for a strong individual that was not overweight (yes I am doing this in metric). Average foot area depends on many things such as size and weight, but for the massive ST14 individual considered above, the unladen foot area was between 0.025 and 0.03 m square, barefoot (yes someone did the research... journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0118619 . That is 4,800 kg/M2.

A cavalry horse weighs 1400 lbs unladen, and a small saddle horse is 1200 lbs. Even if we assume no more than 1300 lbs (lightest rider on lightest horse), we are still at 590 kg, much heavier than the infantry man. Assuming a circular hoof with 5 inch diameter (generous for any but a Clydesdale) and twice as many feet, we have a load rating of 24,000 kg/M2! This horse will fare vastly worse than any heavy infantry! Even if they were deformed with 10 inch feet, the load rating of even the lightest horse with the lightest rider is still 6,000 kg/M2, 20% higher than an a heavier than average infantrymen.

Intention is to attack the light horsemen, who seem to have misjudged how far they will sink in...since when I tried to get my infantry on the same ground they sank in!

Most of the scouts and bowmen are fletchers. At first there is some doubt and resistance, but soon he scouts are on board, if for no ther reason that it lets them hunt for food more efficiently. It takes time to train the horses to hold still when asked.
Shooting while moving is difficult and you can see why the Arabs used clouds of shooters.
But a few riders start to show some ability to hit even while riding, and they are quack to tell other what they are doing.

Heads up, Next Thursday is Thanksgiving here in the states.
It is a pretty big affair, confused by businesses trying to make money as well (Black Friday... big sales the day after Thanksgiving), advertising all the things you need to buy for Christmas. It should probably be renamed Commercialmas.

Anyway, I am likely to be deeply involved in preparations ... baking and cooking, including a "Heritage" turkey. That's basically a non-commercial bird,  the original wild turkey bred on a big open farm. It's surprisingly different and far more delectable... and expensive.
Pity there is no way I can share a little with you, as I know Turkey is not something that Europe or elsewhere has found much use for.
The difference to me is as big as the difference between beef and lamb!

Re: OOC-1

I don't know a thing about Bush Turkeys, and a battery turkey? do you plug it in to recharge it?

The turkey I bought was large for the wild birds and quite pricy, but it is only once a year and it is so much better  tasting than the domestic birds.  This one is only a bit over 16 pounds (I have cooked turkeys weighing up to 33 pounds on occasion) but then there will only be 9 people eating and it sounds like a ton of food will be there. I am not concerned, as left over turkey can be used so many ways and frozen so that people who have long forgotten the Thanksgiving turkey may eat it again in July ;-)

Chris1234, if you need to cook a Turkey let me know, I am sure we can keep it from being dried out.

For some idea of what we are talking about you can look up a Gould's Turkey, which is nativeto this part of the USA.
This will likely tell you far morethan you ever wanted to know:  http://www.nwtfhuagoulds.org/u...ulletin_5_9-9-09.pdf

For planning purposes: Anniversary this weekend
Big Production Babay Shower for son #2 and his wife the next weekend.
The following week Son #1 is visiting for the first time since COVID 19 flared up...

AND I am trying to work on a story continuation ... so for now it's just going to be local stuff around each of your homes.
For the Main story... assume Baron de Montange is causing issues and it is not safe for a merchant caravan to travel the road.
Sir Quintus seems to have the best of the engagements and the Count is supporting him, but a direct assault on the Baron is not in the cards for now. The little battles are wearing him down, as he is losing men he cannot replace. Quintus has let it be known that those whosurrender will be treated well if they swear loyalty to the Duke and live up to it. They will be moved away from the area ... De Montange has threatened all sorts of retribution should he catch anyone trying to do that, which is not helping his cause.

Re: OOC-1

I am just not coming up with anything interesting...  would you (both) be interested in playing / returning to Steam Punk?

Bluedwarf has been there, but I lost a key player and couldn't keep that game going. Rather than redo Kennebrew farm, this will be slightly different and will presume Kennebrew farm has not (yet) occured.  However we can use it as a starting location with changes, so Bluedwarf won't know everything.  ;-)

This would be the beginning, again-

You are all FBI agents. 4 years of college and a few years of experience. 150 points. There is NO MAGIC in this game. This is not a cops and robbers game … well it does have that too… some.

For various reason’s you have irritated your managers and have been transferred to the Special Investigations Division. It is considered a career killer and has many crude takes on the S.I.D acronym … you get all the half-baked stupid investigations about the aliens’ people have seen and the Sasquatch in the woods near by stuff to investigate. Most other agent’s smirk when you say where you work, some get down right rude. You get no respect; generally the FBI seems to hope you’ll quit and go elsewhere, mean while, your boss has called you in on a Saturday Morning and given you a task.

Ideas for Catheran:
a) There's still the setting up trade with elves (and having to negotiate with orcs) storyline. Lots could develop here.
e.g. orcs want something done (opportunity for a dungeon delve advanture, maybe to elminate some creature or find/recover an item or area)
e.g. orcs want an agrrement (socio political adventure, might be with humans, or maybe the baron we've just upset has an item holy, or of other great significance, to the orcs)
e.g. and similar things with the elves, possibly to get something fixed, which requires an outing to see/negotiate wth gnomes..
b) The baron could be planning insurgency, orchestrated but another noble.
c) At the other end of the duke's realm a reletive of someone already dealt with/disposed of, is raising insurrection (or maybe calling for a crusade). it may be complicated by being in another, but ajoining, country and we can travel there as individuals but may not take a military force as that may be seen as an act of war
d) Whoever the Duke responds to (the king?) needs something doing that requires "brave and competant individuals"..
e) Something trouble develops in Amelaia's lands. Perhaps her ex-husband's family turn up and make claims of foul play or have legal documents of entitlement/a will with whatever level of validity/dubiousness.
f) Something similar to #e may occur in Mustaf's lands.

If undead aren't a thing, then the appearance of just one of them could be a big thing.
Not a disease though, as that would sooner or later end the world. No magic = no curse.
Perhaps alchemy, akin to ancient egyptian mummification.
Perhaps one escaped from the (possible dungeon-like) lair of some naughty alchemist (read "non-magical necromancer").
That could make an interesting change of pace/flavour for the campaign without committing it to continuing to be so flavoured.
It may also address the subtext to Mustafa's comment about "not everything has to be resolved with a diplomacy roll or two!"

A part of the Problem is both characters have become rather powerful, with lands to run.  I can't reasonably have them galivanting all over the place.  They need to manage their lands, which has been dumped on their spouses for a good bit already.

Well, US Medicine isn't bad if you can afford it, actaully it is quite good, within that proviso.

I am very fortunate that as a Military retiree, I get very good coverage. I have not paid more than a few dollars out of pocket all year, but most Americans are screwed by the medical insurance set up. My son, who is doing very well indeed, has significant costs and issues with his health insurance.
And the root of it is the politicains are bought and paid for by the wealthy companies. The Voters get a lot of talk and little  else. That is why so many pushed for Trump, thinking he would be different, which he was, he stole it straight out with little effort to obfuscate his actions..

As you may have noticed this Silly Boy has indeed put family first ;-)
But it sure fouls up a lot of plans and causes a LOT of concerns and heart burn (speaking figuratively).

I feel I owe you both some of my time and it helps to let my imagination run a bit more loosely as well.

We're all good.
Just glad you're ok and your other half is as ok as circumstances allow.
Being able to put a name to what's happening (to feel you understand it really) is an enormously good thing IMO.

Going visiting on the yacht again?  We'll manage things so you aren't lost in the woods somewhere.

Re: OOC-1

I am a week out of major surgery, I have given it some thought but am having trouble just keeping up with life right now.
I am also debating which way to go, in those moments I spend thinking about it.
So, no, it’s not dead. I haven’t removed it from the play list, but its not a burning need/desire right now.
