Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Hurry up Vano!

Rory rolled 19 using 1d20+3 to attack the little goblin in front of me.
Rory rolled 7 using 1d6+3 damage on goblin.
Move to O10 if the goblin is dead. It *should* be dead...

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Rory's scarf reaches out once more, and the blades artfully concealed in its whipping length close on the throat of the goblin before her for a moment before it falls, dead.  Asur steps passed the tiny creature's body to move towards the cowering human figure.  Vano charges southward, his blades glinting in the sun, and he strikes the final blow of the combat.

Staring first at the grisly specter of his dead dog, then at the fallen goblins, then back again, the cowering man's mouth opens and closes silently while he tries to process what's going on.

The goblins are all dead, we're now out of initiative order.

Asur gently puts his arm around the grieving man, and turns him away from the sight of his pet.

I’m so sorry we didn’t get here faster.  I would be honored if you would let me help you put him to rest when you’re ready.  What is their name?

Vano glances back over his shoulder at Father Vantus. How far away were those fuel carts? We killed some goblins with torches outside, but there could still be more.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

"Thank you for the healing Father," Rory gives Father Zanthus a slight bow then heads towards the inn.

She peaks through the windows to see if there is anyone who was injured and ran into the inn for cover, or to if there might be goblins hiding inside. If she sees no goblins she stands to the side of the door and yells, "The goblins out here are gone but we don't know if the city is safe yet. Is there anyone inside who needs aid?"

If she sees goblins she quietly warns the others.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

The well-dressed man manages to quiet his screams shortly after the last goblin fell, although he's still breathing hard as Asur tries to calm him down.  "Those... creatures!  They were awful!  If you hadn't come along, I don't know what I would have done.  I just... I couldn't..."  He shakes his head slightly as Asur's words penetrate the haze of confusion.  "You would be honored to help me put... who to rest?"  His eyes widen slightly as the full import of the cleric's words reaches him.  "Oh, you mean Shadow?  I am humbled by the kindness of your spirit, sir, it is a rare man who thinks of animals in such a manner."  He closes his eyes briefly, holds his breath for a moment, then nods.  "I will be staying at the Rusty Dragon for the next few days, can we discuss this tomorrow?  I am afraid I am not at my best right now."

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Father Zantus sighs heavily as the last of the goblins expires under Vano's blade.  Leaning heavily on his staff, the vitality that had momentarily sustained him during the fight evaporates, and he once again appears a tired old man.  "The fuel carts, and indeed the city, are safe, my friends.  The sheriff sent a rider, only just missing you - these few goblins were the only ones with any stomach for a fight.  As far as we can tell, after you defeated the first group in front of the cathedral the rest of them turned tail and ran at the prospect of stiffer resistance than they had anticipated.  There are many of the small creatures running north to the safety of their forests even now."

Vano searches the body of the armored goblin. Maybe there are clues to the purpose of the attack, or perhaps some coin.

Vano rolled 21 using 1d20+2.  Searching the goblin.

"Father, could you take a closer look at these goblins? Something seemed off while I was fighting them. They seemed...weakened somehow, but I'm not really an expert on these things. This whole attack just seems strange to me."

The Man Behind The Curtain:
The sheriff listens to Jensox's story and looks at the fragmented words on the poster.  "Scarnetti.  Of course it would be Scarnetti."  He frowns, then shakes his head.  "You were right to bring this to my attention, although with the festival happening I cannot look into it any more today.  Bring it by the guard post tomorrow and we'll take a look at the official registry."

Jensox stays alert in the square while the sounds of the battle to the South ring about, and even for a few minutes after the noise ceases. Eventually though, if no more trouble presents itself he'll cautiously wander the town, keeping Nova close, trying to locate the guard post mentioned by the Sheriff. He won't enter/bother anyone in the post, but just wants to have his bearings for tomorrow.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Father Zantus walks slowly over to the goblin lying dead at Vano's feet.  He looks the tiny creature over from head to toe without touching it, then crouches down at the body's side.  "Interesting.  Weaker than normal, you said?  I don't feel any lingering negative energy coming from the creature."  Reaching down to the ground he picks up a small stick, which he uses in turn to open one of the goblin's eyelids.  He takes a long look into the creature's tiny eyes, then opens its mouth.  "Ah, there it is.  A faint odor of poisonous mushroom on the creature's breath.  Curious.  I wonder how the creature was exposed to such a toxin?"

Loot time!  Scattered between all the goblins you fought near the inn, you find the following noteworthy items:
  • 1 light blue magical potion
  • 30 gp
  • 2 sets of studded leather armor (small)
  • 2 small shortbows
  • 40 small arrows
  • 1 small whip
  • 1 Masterwork Horsechopper (aka Small Halbred)

After a brief tour of the courtyard, Jensox is easily able to identify the guard barracks - it's an obviously fortified squat stone building with a painted wooden sign outside bearing a crude moniker of a shield and sword.

"I don't know what to make of that, Father. I'm going to do some more looking around though. I still want to check out the site of the explosion." Vano is about to walk off when he pauses and picks up the horsechopper. "Nice blade on this one, despite the goblin-make".

After examining it a moment, he leans the haft against his shoulder and walks over to Asur and the well-dressed man. He extends a hand to the man. "I'm glad you are alright, sir. My name is Vano, and I'm working with Sheriff Hemlock. I may have some questions regarding this attack sometime in the next few days. Would you mind telling me where I will be able to find you?"

Vano is encumbered with a medium load as long as he is carrying the horsechopper.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Rory attempts to sleight of hand the gold, keeping 20 for herself and holding out the other 10 to Father Zanthus.

"Father, it looks like they had some money on them. Maybe it can help fix some of the damage they have done to the town." She gives Father Zanthus 10 of the gold. "Do you perhaps know of a good cleaner? In case I am still to dance at the inn tonight, it would be a better show if I wasn't covered in blood, I think."

"Vano! Are you going to investigate this toxin? That sounds fun! I'll help. I would be happy to help you find a buyer for the weapon, too. Make sure you get the best price. There would only be a small fee, highly discounted from my usual rate since we've fought side by side. I promise I can get you a better deal." Rory grins and claps Vano on the shoulder.

If it is close to the time she is supposed to perform at the Inn she will stay there, go inside and see if she can find the proprietor. And if I remember right this is the inn where her horse is stabled. So she checks on Aria to make sure the goblins didn't kill her.

Rory rolled 16 using 1d20+6.  Sleight of hand on the gold to pocket most of it before offering the rest to Father Zanthus.

Father Zantus accepts the money from Rory with a nod.  "Bless you, child.  It speaks well of your spirit that you would give so generously."  The old man stashes the coins away in his robe, then continues.  "Regarding your outfit, Cyrdak the bard should be able to address that concern magically, if you wish.  I'm sure he'll see fit to clean you up free of charge after what you have done for us all today."  The old man raises his voice slightly, making sure to encompass Asur and Vano as well.  "The three of you have done the city of Sandpoint a great service this day.  May the blessings of Desna be upon you."

The noble talking with Asur visibly starts at the interruption, then takes Vano's hand and shakes it once.  "Thank you, Vano, for saving me.  The way those goblins fell before your blades... truly remarkable!"  His speech picks up in pace as he talks, excitement building.  "Like wheat before the farmer's sickle.  I've never seen the like!"  Releasing Vano's hand, he nods in agreement.  "Yes, after the services you rendered today I should be happy to help you with any questions you have.  As I was telling your friend here, I am staying at the Rusty Dragon for the next several days - these creatures fell upon me before I was able to find shelter within its doors."

"I'll tell you what Rory. If you can negotiate a better selling price for it, you can take half the difference as your fee."

"I never did catch your name. Who should I ask for when I stop by the inn?" After hearing his response, Vano nods at the noble and Asur and takes his leave.

Vano heads off in the direction the explosion came from earlier, figuring he might as well go take a look at those fuel carts now.

Having scouted his mission for the morning, Jensox and Nova will wander on back to the square. With nothing else going on, they'll take a look at the goblin bodies. Noticing some mushroom residue around their mouths, he'll rely on his life experience to see if he can determine anything about the type or ingestion of the mushrooms.

Jensox rolled 27 using 1d20+8.  Knowledge nature check on mushrooms that poisoned goblins.

Jensox's close examination of the goblin corpses in the cathedral square yields no evidence of either mushrooms or other poisons.  The only injuries to the small creatures are the various injuries inflicted on their bodies are the variety of wounds inflicted during the brief, one-sided fight.

Rory thanks Aldern for his praise and talks to him a bit about how she learned to used the bladed scarf from her aunt. After speaking with him she heads out to find the bard to clean her scarf, Viskalai and her cousins to make sure the dance is still on for the night. If it is she performs happily with her cousins' help.

After his thorough but ultimately disappointing investigation, Jensox and Nova will head out of town, just a short ways. Walking out the gate Jensox's shoulders visibly relax. A simple, "'ova, dinner," quickly produces a dead rabbit from the nearby forrest, which the two proceed to share. Jensox then locates a solid tree, climbs into a lower branch, hauls up Nova, and the two bed down for the night.
