[Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Sunday Rova 22, 4707 - Sandpoint

The sun breaks over the city of Sandpoint, and for any who are awake to great the new dawn it is quickly evident that this is a day unlike any in recent memory.  As first rays of the sun crest the nearby hills they catch the very top of the town's new cathedral; small perhaps by the standards of a large city like Magnimar, but at thirty feet high it's still easily the tallest building in the small town, topping the Rusty Dragon Inn by a solid ten feet.  For a brief instant the sunlight catches the orb of pure crystal set atop the cathedral and fractures into a thousand brilliant rainbows cascading across the city and spreading the light of Desna into Sandpoint's streets and alleys.

As the sun continues to rise and the town begins to awaken the normal bustle of activity seems to be strangely absent.  No shopkeeps are barking their wares; no smoke belches forth from the chimneys of the Sandpoint Glassworks; even the Sandpoint Lumber Mill is quiet for the first time in recent memory.  The citizens of Sandpoint know today is a day of celebration.  A chance to finally close the horrible chapter of their history that began five long years ago.  And so the town holds its breath, trying to maintain the perfect, peaceful moment just a bit longer.

As dawn slips away into morning proper the citizens of Sandpoint slowly funnel into the open square in front of the new cathedral.  There are quite a number of fresh faces as well - visitors from the wild lands, from Magnimar, and even a few from far-off Cheliax if their dress is to be believed.  When the square appears full mayor Deverin steps up to a podium that has been erected in front of the catehdral's entrance.  She raises her hands, and the buzz of conversation quickly dies down as the crowd focuses their attention on her.

Mayor Deverin's smile is wide and genuine, and her voice carries all throughout the square in the clear morning air, her speech flowing and precise - the cadence of a politician who is used to addressing crowds.  "Citizens of Sandpoint, and friends from out of town, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the dedication of our new cathedral.  Today is a day of celebration, and I am happy beyond measure to share it with all of you.  Larz was even able to step away from the tannery - that should tell you how important today is!"  A laugh ripples through the crowd, although one old man towards the front just frowns at the mayor.  Kendra waits just long enough for the laughter to start dying on its own before continuing.  "Seriously though, we should all be proud to finally close this ugly chapter in our town's history.  Today we demonstrate our town's resilience, and our kinship." She smiles at the crowd again before continuing.  "There are a few more speakers who wish to take a little of your time before the day's events truly begin.  I wish you all a festival filled with excitement, enjoyment, and the blessings of Abadar."  As her speech concludes the crowd bursts into applause, and she steps back from the podium.

As the mayor steps back, sheriff Belor Hemlock is quick to fill the vacant podium.  A dour looking man, he eyes the crowd in front of him for a moment then purses his lips and nods.  His voice is also clearly heard at the back of the square, his words the short, sharp tempo of a soldier at ease giving commands.  "Thank you mayor Deverin.  I do not have the eloquence of my peers, so I will keep my remarks brief.  If we could all please take a brief moment of silence to remember those who perished in the troubles five years ago, and the fires that consumed our previous chapel."  The crowd falls silent for a moment, broken only by the noisy commotion of a few small children who are quickly shushed by their parents.  "Thank you.  I know today is a day of celebration, but I urge you all to remain careful, particularly at the evening's bonfire, so that we do not taint the day's events with another tragedy even as we put the prior events behind us."  He pauses briefly again, tilting his head to the side as if considering something, then shakes his head.  "Again, thank you for your time."  His speech concluded, the sheriff steps back from the podium, his face and posture relaxing as he does so.

The third speaker to approach the podium is Cyrdak Drokkuss, the proprietor of Sandpoint's playhouse.  In sharp contrast to sheriff Hemlock he looks perfectly poised in front of the crowd; small wonder, given his background and training as an actor.  Picking up on the sagging energy in the crowd after Hemlock's speech, he gives them an easy laugh before setting into his speech.  "Thank you sheriff.  I'm sure we'll all endeavor to make Father Zantus' evening an easy one, but I'm sure the people will agree it's not a real party if we don't have at least one fight, eh?"  The crowd laughs, and sheriff Hemlock's jaw tightens at this, but he says nothing.  "You know, I remember when we first started talking about rebuilding the temple after the fire.  There were so many concerns.  How big should the new temple be?  Where would we get craftsmen?  And how would we ever convince Alamon Scarnetti and Lonjiku Kaijitsu to pay for the damn thing?"  At this the crowd bursts into uproarious laughter; the two noblemen had been legendary for their tight-fistedness almost as much as for their wealth.  "But through the grace of Desna, and more than a few barrels of ale, we were able to start building our new cathedral a little over a year ago.  And while it hasn't always been easy, we have persevered to make it happen, because that's what our town does!"  There is a smattering of applause, and Cyrdak quickly looks over his shoulder to see Father Zantus motioning him to wrap it up.  "It appears I need to move this along; as a note of farewell, I would like to cordially invite you to the playhouse to see our newest production, "The Harpy's Curse" - we'll be raffling off free tickets for tonights show, so please stick around the cathedral for the celebration!"  And with a flourishing bow, the actor steps back from the podium.

Last to the podium is Father Abstalar Zantus.  Dressed in a loose flowing robe and cloak gathered at his throat with a rainbow butterfly pin, the old man has a solid, stately air to him.  He clears his throat to speak, and a hush falls over the crowd.  His voice is quiet and reedy, but through some sort of magical assistance his words are carried directly to the ears of all in the crowd.  "Thank you all, my friends, for joining us in celebration today.  We give thanks to Desna for bringing us all safely together here today, and ask for Abadar to watch over our gathering.  I have no wish to further delay the day's activities, so I ask only for you all to reconvene tonight as the sun sets for the final consecration."  The old man pauses for a moment, then gives the crowd a gentle smile.  "It is therefore my pleasure to officially declare the start of the Swallowtail festival."

And we're off!  You have the run of the town; please take a  scene little time to explore, meet some of the other characters (Player or otherwise!), and generally have a good time.  We'll get to the next scene soon!

[Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Vano has just arrived in town a few minutes ago. He is still a bit grungy and dust covered after several days of travelling. He rides a chestnut colored horse at a slow walk down the road until arriving at the back of the crowd halfway through the mayor's speech. He pats the neck of his horse fondly "Well, Bait, it looks like we're just in time for the fun." He sits there for a few moments looking down over the crowd, his eyes scanning back and forth as if searching for someone.

As Hemlock walks up to the podium, Vano stops searching and focuses on the sheriff. After waiting for the brief speech to end, Vano waves his arms wildly and attempts to make eye contact with Hemlock. Assuming he gets noticed, he raises his hand to the clasp of his cloak, a pin shaped as black metal arrow. Vano taps the pin twice meaningfully and waits.

[Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Asur was one of those few that was up before the dawn. He never missed it if he could help it. Even during a storm, he would be outside waiting. This morning, however, was as beautiful as it could be. Asur smiled after the sun fulling crested, and left the hill he had been kneeling on outside of town.
He had been in town for almost a month now. He enjoyed the peace of the small community, and had been doing odd jobs for the townsfolk in exchange for a place to sleep at night, occasionally playing the role of doctor to those who would otherwise not be able to afford it.
After the speeches ended, Asur approached the most important being in the town: the chestnut horse that just came into town, the only animal in town he hadn’t pet yet.  He walked right up to the road-weary animal and smiled at the Varisian being carried.

“He looks thirsty! Can I give him some water? For that matter, he looks hungry and tired too! Basically I’m asking if I can spoil your horse rotten, he’s the only animal in town I haven’t done it to yet.”

Without waiting for much of a response, Asur cups his hands and lifts them to the horse’s mouth, and water starts flowing out of them.  He lets him drink his fill.  Assuming Vano lets Asur take care of Bait, he’ll take him off to a nearby stable to do exactly what he said he would.  In either case, Asur returns returns to the festival soon after, looking for anyone who might need some help running their activities.

Vano looks down at the stranger touching his horse. His eyes widen slightly when the water appears. "I appreciate the offer, friend, and I'm sure Bait appreciates the water. But letting the first stranger I meet in town walk off with my horse seems like a good way for him to get stolen. You're welcome to spoil him as much as you want right here where I can keep an eye on him."

“Wait here.  I’ll be right. Back.”

He runs away to a nearby stable that he recently cured a horse’s lame leg in, and borrows a small feed bag and grooming tools, in lieu of any payment that he would have received otherwise.

Asur rolled 28 using 1d20+10. Diplomacy to borrow horse things.

“Back! Let the spoiling commence!  I’m Asur by the way. I’m really not from here, but welcome anyway!”

Asur proceeds to spoil Bait as best he can.

[Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Jensox and Nova rise early and leave town for their morning jog before the sun breaks the horizon.  Jensox's gait is a bit stiff early, but quickly settles to a practiced, plodding shuffle which covers leagues faster than a casual observer might guess.  Nova dutifully trots along his side, occasionally dawdling to sniff at a root or branch and then excitedly running to catch up to the old man.

The pair head out via the Lost Coast Road but loop back around to Sand Point after the sun makes its presence known.  Returning through the town's northern gate, Jensox is immediately unsettled by the staggering collection of people present.  " 'eel, Nova" he mutters to his over-enthusiastic companion.  "We're 'ust here to look'n 'bout our woods, now."  As Mayor Deverin begins speaking, Jensox cautiously works his way around the crowd - not trying to hide or blend in, but just avoiding as many people as he can.

Droart does not approve of Asur’s complete disregard for his own safety. As Asur walks up and begins talking to Vano, Droart is constantly scanning the crowd, a calm but intense look falling across his features as he tries to find the higher ground he needs to be able to see everyone. As soon as Asur begins to spoil the horse Droart is introducing himself to Vano. Hail and well met traveler, I am Droart the Shepherd. You’ll have to forgive my companion, he tends to be rather excitable when animals are concerned. What brings you to this fine village?

As the crowd begins to mill around after the speeches are over Droart begins to subtly guide Asur, Vano and the horse away from the throng of people, not liking being in the middle of such a group without the height benefit of being on his mount.

While the speeches were underway Rory scopes out a place for herself and her cousins to set up shop for the festivities. Leading her horse, Aria, she listens to the speeches with half an ear and makes note of a few foreigners who looked like good marks.

Rory rolled 18 using 1d20+2.  Perception to find worthwhile marks for pickpocketing later.

Once the speeches are done she made her way to a prominent spot with Ferak and his sister, Isa, beside her and their other cousin, Jamis, blending into the crowd. Ferak clears a little space and begins to call out to the crowd, encouraging them to see a dance to get the celebrations started. Once a crowd gathers, Isa starts playing a energetic tune on her guitar. Rory yells, "Let's start this celebration right!"

While she dances Ferak asks for donations and Jamis pickpockets those who don't choose to give monetary thanks for the performance.

Rory Rolled 24 using 1d20+5.  Performance (Dance)

After the first dance she chats with some of the locals. "Thank you so much for your generous patronage! It means so much to me. This is such a lovely town. I've never been here before. Do you know a good tavern? Or any other sights I shouldn't miss while I'm here?"

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Rory's dancing draws quite a crowd; the folks of Sandpoint are no stranger to artistic performances, but most of the professionals that come through town are actors playing their trade on Cydrak's stage.  Varisian folk-dancing is entirely different, and the town's citizens are enraptured - so much so, in fact, that Jamis finds himself almost with far fewer marks than usual.  As the crowd applauds the conclusion of the dance, a tall man dressed as one of the Shoanti approaches Rory and offers a respectful bow.  His voice is deep and slow, each word carefully chosen.  "Your dance honors us.  I am Garridan Viskalai, owner of the White Deer.  If you are seeking a place to stay, I would be pleased to offer you a room and a hot meal if you would perform in the dining hall for my patrons."

A shorter, roly-poly man walks up beside Garridan as he concludes his offer.  The newcomer speaks with an odd temppo, drawing out some words and rushing through others, giving his speech an almost bird-like quality.  "Brodert Quink, pleased to make your acquaintance.  If you are looking for interesting sites to see, I've been making a survey of ancient Thassilonian artifacts since moving to Sandpoint.  Perhaps we could take a walk sometime?"

Upon hearing his offer, the sheriff eyes Xol up and down, then slowly nods.  "Very well, master wizard, if I find myself with something missing I will be sure to prevail upon your aid.  However the only things I truly hope to find today are peace and celebration, and if those are lost, well... I fear it may beyond your magic's ability to help."

Following the speeches, the sheriff watches the crowd start disperse, keeping a close eye out for any trouble caused by such a large gathering.  As empty spaces start to appear, he makes his way over to Vano, skirting the edge of Rory's group of admirers as he does so.  He also brushes past an old man with a large dog at his side, although he does not pause for them, either.  Arriving before Vano, Asur, and Droart, he waves a hand in greeting.  "Asur, Droart, I trust all is well."   That done, he looks to Vano.  "Yes, the Arrows sent word ahead saying we'd be hosting a traveler soon enough.  I know it's a far journey for you, but we greatly appreciate the work your Order does, even this far to the West.  I had hoped to send notes on the local goblins back to Fort Rannick.  I am pleased your stay happened to coincide with our celebration; I have nothing for you today, but please stop by the guard post tomorrow and I will have a letter drawn up for you to relay back to your commander.  In the meantime, please enjoy the celebration, and let me know if you spot any trouble."

Nova's gaze shifts to the receding form of the Sheriff as he slips back in the crowd, and the shepherd dog pushes on his reluctant master's leg with a wet nose.

Jensox scratches Nova's ear, looks down and then back out at the crowd.  He heaves a weary sigh.  "Your 'ight, a'course.  'lest I can do is ask, may'be we solve this whole 'ang issue today."

The two step out of their alcove and follow after the sheriff, one looking around uncomfortably and the other with his tongue hanging out. Nova's keen nose follows Belor past Xol's setup, through the crowd, and very quickly the pair are watching his greetings to Vano from a polite distance.

If Jensox can get the sheriff's attention he'll ask for a moment of his time. " 'xcuse me Sheriff, do ya mind talk'n a spot o' bus-i-ness this morn?"

"Now this micey knave was go'n on 'bout some 'imber rights 'n some nonsense from t' city tha he could up 'n take my trees. Me 'n Nova 'ere ran 'im off a'fore he could hurt much." The parchment is in rough shape. It was obviously posted out in the elements for a while, and has significant torn holes where it was mounted previously. Reading between the rain-soaked blotches, the holes, and what print remains, it mentions a decision about timber rights of some portion of the, presumably, Churlwood Forest, and something about a meeting maybe, but the place and date are missing. In the bottom right corner is some sort of logo, half-torn, but readable is the letters "..netti" toward the end.

If he agrees they set up a time/day for her and her cousins to perform. If he does not she smooths things over and still agrees to perform, setting up when they should be there.

Sure! Sounds like it could be interesting! Something new! Or, well, old. How does tomorrow morning sound?"

After deciding on a time with Quink, Rory packs up the performance area and takes her share of the earnings from the dance. (They split everything evenly.) Money divided, the cousins go their separate ways to have a look around the festival with plans to meet back at an inn/restaurant/food cart they found nearby for lunch at noon. Asur, Vano, and Droart walk Bait over to the edge of town, following a trickle of people slowly filling a small pavilion setup near a dirt track.  There's a cluster of riders getting their mounts ready, although nobody is lining for the race just yet.  A small wooden table is setup near the track with a dwarf seated behind it next to a stack of forms for entry.  "Right then, just sign your name here, initial here and here, and put your mount's name here, and we'll get you lined up when the time comes.  Best of luck to you and your horse."

With the welcoming speeches done, Xol's booth sees a few curious visitors as people make their way out of the square, but none of the initial visitors have the desire to part with any coin for his services.  One of the last people out of the square, however, is a nervous looking young man , his eyes darting all around the area.  "Master wizard, I was wondering what you could tell me about this?  I found it in the slag heap during my shift at the glass factory a few days ago."  Reaching into his picket, he pulls out a small metal amulet in the shape of a seven-pointed star.

Viskalai narrows his eyes at Rory's offer, then cracks a smile.  "How can I resist such an offer?  Consider it a deal, Aurora.  I'll expect the three of you in time for the dinner crowd."

Bodert reacts to Rory's agreement with a slight widening of his eyes.  "You actually want to go?"  He tries to cover his slip of the tongue, the words spilling out of his mouth almost faster than he can think.  "I mean, of course you want to!  Tomorrow morning would be great, I'll meet you at the inn after breakfast?"

The sheriff listens to Jensox's story and looks at the fragmented words on the poster.  "Scarnetti.  Of course it would be Scarnetti."  He frowns, then shakes his head.  "You were right to bring this to my attention, although with the festival happening I cannot look into it any more today.  Bring it by the guard post tomorrow and we'll take a look at the official registry."

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Vano strolls over to the registration table and nods at the dwarf before signing up both Bait and himself. After walking back out of the pavilion he hops back onto the saddle and takes Bait at a brisk trot through the race track to learn the course and warm up the horse. If anyone tries to stop him, he attempts to brush past saying, "I just don't want the locals to have too much of an advantage. I'll only be gone a minute."

Vano rolled 16 using 1d20.  Perception race course.

After he either gets a chance to check out the track, or is denied entry entirely, he rides back to Asur and Droart. "Would you two mind watching my stuff while I'm racing? Bait will have a better time of it without carrying so much." Vano spends a couple minutes making a pile of his possessions. He unhooks his saddlebags and places them on the ground. He sets his longbow and quivers next to them. His cloak and scimitar follow next. His pin gets removed from the cloak and moved to his shoulder. He checks his scarf to make sure it is tied securely around his waist.

Vano is basically willing to wait for the start of the race unless Droart or Asur have anything else to do. He takes any remaining time to size up the competition.

Vano rolled 4 using 1d20.  Perception fellow riders.

Rory Agrees to both Viskalai and Bodert for the meeting times, shakes hands and watches them go. After the crowd has dispersed a bit she huddles with her cousins to split the earnings evenly between all four. They find a cafe/inn nearby and agree to meet back there at noon for lunch. After parting ways she wanders around the festival, leading Aria, looking for anything interesting, be it something to do, something worth stealing, or someone who looks like fun to talk with for a time.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Xol looks over the amulet carefully.  His stores of knowledge are of no help in identifying the object, beyond simply telling him that it is old.  Very old.  Older than anything in that condition has any right to be without magical aid.    With his mundane avenues exhausted, he opens his magical sight and gazes on the amulet.  After a few seconds of careful focus, he smiles, having proven his suspicions correct.

Vano trots Bait for a quick lap around the track.  It's a simple dirt oval, roughly a half mile in total, with no notable obstacles or challenging terrain.  The other riders, all locals based on their easy familiarity with each other, are dressed in rugged leathers and appear ready for a hard ride.  By the time the dwarf handling registration folds his table up there are a dozen horses and riders milling about the starting line.  Vano is placed on the outermost slot of the race, although whether due to his late entry or his outsider status is impossible to determine.  The same dwarf climbs a small wooden tower and grabs a small conical horn.  "Ladies and gentleman, welcome one and all to the first annual Sandpoint Challenge!  Our winner today will receive a full keg of the Hagfish's finest ale, courtesy of Jargie Quinn.  This is a friendly contest, so please, no pushing, striking, kicking or biting.  And keep the horses under control, too!"  The crowd, already in a good mood from the day's celebration, laughs at the joke as the dwarf pulls out a green flag.  Holding it high, he counts out the race's start.  "On your mark... get set... GO!"

The race is short, but while Vano and Bait make a valiant effort the horse's fatigue from the days of travel required to reach Sandpoint is simply too much and the pair end up finishing in the middle of the pack.  A black-and-white mottled stallion with a saddleblanket bearing the image of a purple bell-shaped flower ends up placing first to a polite smattering of applause.  The winner shortly receives a large wooden cask which is wheeled away, and then a pair of carts piled with casks roll up to the track.  The dwarf raises his megaphone again.  "Ladies and gentlemen, in honor of today's importance Jargie Quinn has gifted you all with a special surprise - a free mug of ale not just for the racers, but for all of you who have joined us today!"  That announcement draws considerably more interest, and soon the racetrack is swarmed with folks claiming their drink.  And perhaps a second, or third, if they think they can get away with it.

As lunchtime draws close, all the inns and taverns in the city setup large tables in the common square outside the new cathedral.  The innkeepers and their helpers start placing out their signature dishes, and soon the entire square is filled to the brim with a dizzying variety of food.  All is provided free of charge; with the large volume of foreigners in town the inkeeps know an opportunity for self-promotion when they see it.  Ameiko Kaijitsu easily wins the unofficial popularity contest with her curry-spiced salmon paired with a winterdrop mead, and the other cooks give her a good-natured ribbing.

After lunch the square comes alive with local merchants selling their wares, artists demonstrating their talents, even a traveling bard from down south in Magnimar makes a showing.  And then, finally, as the sun begins to set, the town gathers in the square to witness the consecration of the new cathedral and the closing of this ugly chapter in their town's history.

Everyone please leave a post detailing how you spend your afternoon.  If you want to try and buy something, let me know and we'll talk.  Please also indicate where you're standing for the consecration ceremony on the map below.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

After the race Vano hops off his horse with a huge smile on his face. He gathers up his belongings and then enjoys a couple ales (while encouraging Asur and Droart to drink with him). Then he takes Bait back to the Rusty Dragon and checks in, making sure to mention he is from the Black Arrows. He spends some time properly taking care of Bait after so much time on the road and a hard race.

Eventually he heads back out to the celebration, wanders for a bit, samples the local food, and ends up relaxing where he can hear the bard perform.

In between performances he walks up the bard and tips them a couple silver. He starts to walk off, pauses, and then turns back to say hesitantly "If, in your travels, you ever come across a pair of Varisian bards by the name of Qrow and Lenna, could you let them know that their son is doing well." He then hurries off without waiting for an answer.

After the race, Asur gratefully accepts the mug of ale, and toasts Bait’s performance.  Following that bit of merriment, he returns the horse grooming items he borrowed, and starts wandering the festival.
He stops briefly to taste all the different foods and offerings, enjoys the travelling troop of dancers for a performance, and generally marvels at how happy everyone in town seems at the moment.
For the rest of the day, until the ceremony, Asur borrows a wooden bowl from one of the inns and begs for alms, any proceeds of which he returns to the church.

09:18, Today: Asur rolled 30 using 1d20+10. Diplomacy to beg for alms. He is apparently wildly successful.

Before lunch Rory goes to the White Deer to stable Aria give her food and generally pamper her so she can rest. After she meets up with her cousins for lunch, taking full advantage of all the free food. Through the afternoon they enjoy the festival together. She talks with many new people and invites them to come to the White Deer to see her dance that evening.

If dinner time happens before the consecration ceremony she and her cousins show up early to the White Deer to set up and perform. Knowing the owner is related to the sheriff and apparently a Shoanti, not a foreigner, she advises her cousins not to steal anything and just ask for tips.

Seeing a fellow Varisian she does not recognize (Vano) at the ceremony she goes over to him and smiles wide gives him the traditional greeting of clasping opposite arms and patting him on the back. In Varisian she introduces herself, "I'm Aurora Lesandre, you can call me Rory, it's so good to see a fellow Varisian here! Did you come for the festival?"

Rory ends up at F17 for the ceremony.

After the brief discussion with the Sheriff, Jensox returns the parchment to his cloak and leads Nova back through the crowd and to the small alcove between buildings.  After people watching for a moment, the two continue away from the gathering and find their way toward the beach along the town's northern edge.  The open air and calm water allow Jensox to release some of the tension he's been holding, and he encourages Nova to run along the sand.

The smells emanating from the square quickly attract Nova's nose, and the pair wander on back into the fray and search out food, Jensox asking the inn keepers if they mind his sharing with his companion.  Morsels in hand, they'll work their way back once more to the alcove on the north side and settle in under the tree/bush to enjoy.  With a full belly, Jensox doesn't feel much like moving and settles in to watch the artists, enjoy the bard's music, and be a part of a society (if on the periphery) for the first time in a while.

As the sun sets, Jensox ends up at L28, and Nova at M28.

There are some things about it that make me uneasy, and i fear it could cause harm in the wrong hands. I'll need to consult with Abstalar at least before I can let you know for sure what it is. He takes the amulet before the young man can object, and heads toward the church to see if Ablaster can help to Identify it.

Likely being turned away due to the business of the day, he is ok to wait until later to speak with the priest if needed.

During the festival Xol meanders on the north side of the courtyard in front of the chapel. He will end up on the outskirts of the crowd during the ceremony, as he's not big on crowds, and prefers a more natural environment.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

The afternoon passes without notable incident, the townsfolk and visitors enjoying the various displays of arts and crafts throughout the town square.  As the sun starts to set, everyone gathers once again in front of the cathedral.  Father Zantus steps back up to the podium, and gives the gathered throng a welcoming smile.  He raises his hands, and the acolytes behind him open the lid on cages containing thousands of swallow-tail butterflys, bathing the entire crowd in a rainbow of light reflecting off the multitude of wings.  A quiet murmer of amazement runs through the crowd.  The priest raises a small gray thunderstone above his head, and throws it down onto the ground to signal the start his speech. The stone hits the ground, and a sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun’s setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake.  All eyes turn from the butterflys back to Father Zantus and he clears his throat and takes a breath to speak.

Suddenly a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.

The entire town appears to erupt into chaos almost immediately.  Within the square, a single goblin crawls from the tent nearest Xol and Jensox.  A pair of goblins emerge from the cart near Rory and Vano, and another pair emerge from the cart near Asur and Droart.

Chris let me know Nova's perception roll was high enough to notice the Gerblins, and Jensox/Nova's initiative is high enough that Nova gets a standard action in the surprise round before the enemy

Nova notices the nearest goblin (Q27) crawling from the tent. He immediately stands and alerts his master with a staccato bark and a quick look glance his shoulder. Even without a command, Nova's sheparding training takes over.

Nova takes a 5 foot step to N27 and stands guard, attempting to prevent any enemy from passing through or around him.

Quick on the draw, the wizard Xol reacts before anyone else, and after a brief wave of his hand and a muttered incantation finds himself reduced to a tiny fraction of his normal size.  It's obvious to any observing him that his normally lithe movements have become even more graceful, although his muscles have surely shrunk with his diminished stature.

Nova also manages to act just a hair faster than the goblins, and with a low growl in his throat positions himself between his master and the nearest threat.

With a dog encroaching on his position, the nearest goblin bolts directly south, screaming all the while.  "The longshanks have a dog!  Run, run, run!"

One of the goblins in the middle of the square moves towards the small shed near Rory and Vano, obviously trying (and failing) cto remain unnoticed.  The other goblin attempts to climb the small cart and gain the advantage of a higher position, but his foot slips on the wagon's axle and he falls prone in the dirt.

The two southernmost goblins near Droart and Asur split, one heading north and one hading south of the pair.  The southernmost goblin clearly has eyes on the loaded table of food past the pair, but it's anyone's guess what the northern creature has in mind.

Surprise round summary:

Xol Standard Action: Cast Reduce Person.

Nova 5 foot step - N27
Nova Standard Action: Guard Jensox

Goblin 1 Move Action: Move to Q21
Goblin 2 Move Action: Move to G21
Goblin 3 Move Action: Climb check on the wagon.  Fail!
-Goblin 3 falls prone
Goblin 4 Move Action: Move to N11
Goblin 5 Move Action: Move to M7.

Initiative order for Round 1:

Jensox takes a startled glance at where full-sized Xol was standing just a moment ago, and then shakes his head in slight disbelief.

Motioning toward the fleeing goblin, Jensox barks, "'ova, attack!" He then settles into a defensive posture with his walking stick, alert for any dangers headed his way.

As a free action, Jensox commands Nova to attack the feeling goblin in square Q21.
Jensox rolled 13 using 1d20+7.  Handle Animal check, command attack.
Then as a full round action he enacts total defense, +4 Dodge bonus to AC.

The instant Nova hears the command, he's off like a bow shot across the courtyard, easily making up the distance to the fleeing goblin. Once within range behind the diminutive foe, Nova lunges at his target's legs, making a vicious bite attack and trip attempt.

Nova moves to Q22 and attacks the Goblin in Q21 with a bite attack. If the bite hits he attempts to trip the goblin (note, if the goblin is small it has a -4 to it's Dex or Str check to oppose the trip attempt):
Jensox rolled 15 using 1d20+3.  Nova bite attack against goblin.
Jensox rolled 6 using 1d6+3.  Nova bite attack damage (if hit).

The party tears into the goblins like a well-coordinated machine.  Xol blasts the retreating goblin with a thin beam of magical cold, searing its green flesh.  Droart moves northward to protect Asur's flank, and runs the goblin completely through with his blade, dropping it in one blow.  Asur runs over to the injured dog and chants a few words of power, laying his glowing hands on its injured neck, and the dog's wounds magically close, staunching the flow of blood and bringing life back into its eyes.  Rory dances closer to the goblin lying on the ground near her and lashes out with her scarf.  The ribbon wraps around the tiny creature's neck, constricting with a handful of artfully concealed blades, and the with a (literally) strangled cry the goblin expires.  Jensox urges his dog to attack, and Nova charges forward, savaging the goblin attempting to flee from him.  The combination of Xol's magical blast and Nova's teeth proves to much for the goblin, and it collapses dead into the dirt.

Seeing its companion killed, the goblin nearest Rory steps in close, carefully timing its motion to avoid the reach of her scarf, and opens a cut on her arm with its folding knife.  Down southwards, the lone remaining goblin pulls its knife and attempts to flip it around in an intimidating manner.  The shoddy worksmanship fails to hold up, however, and the weapon falls apart completely, leaving the dissappointed goblin holding nothing but an empty handle.  Eyeing Droart up, he shrieks a defiant cry of "Have at you, Longshanks!" and charges with his tiny fists.  His attack is blunted by the heavy steel surrounding Droart, but Droart was clearly not expecting the charge and his return stroke misses.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Finally getting over his momentary hesitation, Vano closes with one of the goblins and drops it with a single hit from his scimitar.  Xol moves southward to close on the lone remaining foe, while Droart slashes it across the chest.  Asur maintains his vigil over the injured doggo, while Rory moves down to ask for some healing.  Nova returns to his master, and the pair are reunited again.

The lone remaining goblin, injured and out of its mind with rage, tries to close and punch Droart with its tiny fists - the paladin anticipated the attack this time, though, and his sword strikes true again, putting down their last remaining foe.

With the goblins all dispatched, a momentary hush falls over the square.  Indistinct shouts and sounds of chaos echo from elsewhere in town, although they are all far enough away that it's impossible to pin down a direction at this point in time.

If he notices neither (and if we are out of combat turns) he searches the two dead nearby goblins.

I’m going to have to save the magical healing for more dire wounds, in case the goblins have caused more than mischief in town.  But I’d be happy to bind your cut normally until we’re sure the danger has passed.

As Asur moves to Rory to bind her cut, he gives Droart a severe look.

Droart, there was no need to kill him, he posed no threat without a weapon, and we could have gotten answers from the Goblin.  I’m not mad, just disappointed.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

A few more moments of quiet pass, and people start to peak out from behind corners, around carts, and through the door to the new cathedral where they'd taken shelter from the goblin's attack.  While most of the citizenry appears hesitant to enter the square proper, Father Zantus steps out of the cathedral, accompanied by Ferak and Isa.  Zantus mutters a few words and places a glowing hand on Rory's shoulder, wiping away the cut left by the goblin's crude blade.  "Thank you for coming to our aide; I have no doubt there are more of the foul creatures running amok through the city even now."

At that moment, Ferak points to the cathedral's rooftop with a cry - "Look, there's another one!"  With its cover blown the goblin tries to move faster than it should on the sloped stone; it trips, and comes crashing down onto the cathedral's stone steps, its neck obviously broken on landing.

Zantus shakes his head and opens his mouth to something, but before he can speak a tremendous thunderclap echoes through the square and a plume of black smoke starts rising to the south.  The priest recovers remarkably quickly, pointing towards the fire.  "That must have been one of the fuel carts for tonight's bonfires!  Please see to them, I'll try and lead the rest of the townsfolk to safety."

Whole Jensox, Nova, and Xol remain in the courtyard with Father Zantus, Rory, Vano, and Asur head southwards to investigate the source of the giant plume of smoke.  They have barely left the courtyard when the instigators make themselves known; another group of goblins is marching  to the North, towards the courtyard and the cathedral.  The goblins up front are all carrying torches, while the one in the back is brandishing a whip and singing a marching tune in time with its footsteps.  "Catch the pup.  Bonk the head to shut it up.  Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed, We be goblins, you be food!  The goblins with torches apparently have no sense of rhythym whatsoever, and their steps fail to sync with the tune in anything beyond the most haphazard fashion.

Farther south, beyond the goblins, a low stone wall surrounds what those of you familiar with the area would know to be the White Deer inn.

Slightly faster on his feet than the small goblins, Vano moves in and strikes the nearest goblin, dropping it dead with his first strike.  The small creature screams in pain as it dies, startling the other goblins out of their momentary lull.

The goblin with the whip gestures with its offhand, and Vano's eyes glaze over as an enchantment sows a momentary burst of confusion in his mind.  The goblin laughs, a shrill cackling sound, and continues its creepy singing.  "Goblins race and goblins jump.  Goblins slash and goblins bump.  Burn the skin and mash the head, Goblins here and you be dead!"

The other two goblins close on Vano, attempting to wedge him between them.  The first goblin to close swings its rickety weapon, and the pin on the dogslicer's hing breaks, depositing the blade on the ground.  The other goblin, missing any sort of aid from its ally, swings at Vano as well, and misses.

The sound of distant goblin scream works is audible as far north as the Cathedral, and Nova wines at the noise.  Father Zantus, picking up on the dog's anxiety, nods.  "Master druid, I fear they will need aid.  I will attempt to heal them, but it may not be enough.  Will you and your companion join us?"

Asur closes with the northernmost goblin, lashing out with one of his feet at the tiny creature's head.  The goblin ducks at the last second, although its corresponding lack of a working weapon leaves it unable to strike back in return.  Rory moves towards the chanting goblin, swinging with the razors in her scarf and also failing to find purchase.  And Vano stares straight ahead of him in a daze.

The goblins respond with attacks of their own, although they are still as incompetent as ever.  The chanting goblin tries to wrap her whip around Rory's foot, only to be stymied by a quick step from the agile dancer.  The haze is just starting to clear from Vano's eyes when the unarmed goblin charges forward, and acting almost entirely on instinct he cuts the creature down.  The sole remaining goblin wielding a weapon tries to land a blow on the swashbuckler, but Vano deftly parries its blow with his razor.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Vano, Rory, and Asur all swing valiantly at the goblins, but the goblins all seem to be blessed with supernatural luck and manage to duck every blow aimed at their tiny, cackling forms.

In retaliation the northernmost goblin swings again at Vano with its tiny razor, and manages to connect, drawing a shallow cut along the swashbuckler's ribs.  The chanter tries one more time to ensnare Rory's feet in its whip, but again fails to find purchase on the agile dancer.  Snarling in frustration the chanter drops its whip and pulls out a knife of its own before closing in amongst the gyrations of Rory's swirling scarf.

Father Zantus listens to Jensox's speech impassively, then shakes his head.  "I understand the desire for peace, although if events are in motion I fear your woods may not remain the refuge they once were.  Desna be with you."  And with that, the priest starts jogging south, towards the sound of conflict.

Asur and Vano continue in vain trying to attack the northernmost goblin; despite their fancy footwork, trapping it neatly between the two of them, the tiny creature remains elusive and their strikes find only empty air.

The goblin with the whip, however, is not so lucky.  It closes with Rory, and she pivots to the side, continuing her dance and trailing the length of her scarf in her wake.  The goblin is obviously not expecting this maneuver and fails to dodge out of the way.  By the time Rory stops moving the goblin lies bleeding to death on the ground, its face and neck slashed with multiple shallow cuts.

The lone remaining goblin, realizing it is outmatched, gives a tiny shriek of terror and sprints away from Asur and Vano.  The two warriors attempt one more time to bring it down, but the elusive creature holds onto its last bit of luck and their blows once again fail to find its gray flesh.

Vano charges after the fleeing goblin, and with the tiny creature's back turned it is unable to duck out of the way of his scimitar.  The goblin drops without any further fuss just as Rory arrives at Vano's side.

Moving towards the south, Asur puts one thin shoulder against the heavy oak doors and pushes.  The doors are incredibly bulky, but the hinges have been well maintained and they open slowly and silently to reveal another battle.

The scene below shows a small band of goblins in the inn's courtyard.  In the middle of the entrance path, an armored goblin stands next to a riding dog, a halbred in his tiny hands.  A large hunting dog stands snarling on the goblin's other side, fangs bared and ready to attack the small creature.  On the east side of the path stands another trio of goblins wielding the same small knives the group has become accustomed to seeing and cowering from the horrific image of the snarling hound.

And finally, closer to the inn, Asur can make out a human man wearing a fine set of clothing taking cover from the goblins behind a small stone bench.

As Asur watches, the armored goblin whirls his halbred above his head before bringing it clashing down onto the hunting dog, severing its head with a single blow.  The other goblins cheer and the finely dressed-man screams.  For a single moment, there is no attention directed northward.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Asur is incensed at the cruelty exhibited by the Gerblins towards the dogs of the town, and runs forward with tears in his eyes brandishing his quarterstaff.  Unfortunately his emotional state makes his aim poor, and he whifs above the little creature’s head.

Asur moves to O-14.  Asur takes a whack at the goblin. 5.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Asur and Vano move to flank one of the goblins; even caught by surprise, the small creature's armor helps ward off the blows aimed at it, and both of their strikes fail to find purchase.

The other two goblins move north to help their small friend, and they slide into place on either side of Asur and Vano.  All three of the horrible fiends strike out, and one of them scores Vano along the ribs, opening another cut on the warrior.  The armored goblin to the south gives the cowering human a glare, then stows the halbred on his back before hopping aside the riding dog and drawing his bow.  As the goblin settles himself, he shakes his head as if freeing himself from some sort of external influence, and his movements become slightly more deliberate.

And silently, taking pains not to draw any attention to himself, the elderly figure of Alabaster Zantus comes walking down the path.

Re: [Book 1.1] - Festival and Fire

Rory moves forward under the bridge and tries to take out one of the goblins with her bladed scarf, but fails to connect.  Asur takes a careful step to place him next to Vano, then channels a fistful of positive energy.  The nearby goblin takes a swing while he's momentarily distracted, but the tiny creature fails to land a blow on the cleric.  Vano, in a flashing ring of steel, slays first one of the goblins next to him with a swipe from his scimitar, then turns and lays the other creature out with his razor.

With one goblin still providing a screen, the mounted archer circles around down south and launches an arrow at Vano.  Despite the jostling of his mount destabilizing his aim, the arrow scores a hit on the freshly healed warrior.  The last goblin on foot closes with Rory and slashes her with his knife.

Seeing Rory injured, father Zantus walks up behind her, summoning positive energy in a fashion similar to Asur.  "Be at peace, child.  Desna will see us through."

Rory's scarf reaches out once more, and the blades artfully concealed in its whipping length close on the throat of the goblin before her for a moment before it falls, dead.  Asur steps passed the tiny creature's body to move towards the cowering human figure.  Vano charges southward, his blades glinting in the sun, and he strikes the final blow of the combat.

Staring first at the grisly specter of his dead dog, then at the fallen goblins, then back again, the cowering man's mouth opens and closes silently while he tries to process what's going on.

The goblins are all dead, we're now out of initiative order.

She peaks through the windows to see if there is anyone who was injured and ran into the inn for cover, or to if there might be goblins hiding inside. If she sees no goblins she stands to the side of the door and yells, "The goblins out here are gone but we don't know if the city is safe yet. Is there anyone inside who needs aid?"

If she sees goblins she quietly warns the others.

I couldn't..."  He shakes his head slightly as Asur's words penetrate the haze of confusion.  "You would be honored to help me put... who to rest?"  His eyes widen slightly as the full import of the cleric's words reaches him.  "Oh, you mean Shadow?  I am humbled by the kindness of your spirit, sir, it is a rare man who thinks of animals in such a manner."  He closes his eyes briefly, holds his breath for a moment, then nods.  "I will be staying at the Rusty Dragon for the next few days, can we discuss this tomorrow?  I am afraid I am not at my best right now."

Father Zantus sighs heavily as the last of the goblins expires under Vano's blade.  Leaning heavily on his staff, the vitality that had momentarily sustained him during the fight evaporates, and he once again appears a tired old man.  "The fuel carts, and indeed the city, are safe, my friends.  The sheriff sent a rider, only just missing you - these few goblins were the only ones with any stomach for a fight.  As far as we can tell, after you defeated the first group in front of the cathedral the rest of them turned tail and ran at the prospect of stiffer resistance than they had anticipated.  There are many of the small creatures running north to the safety of their forests even now."

Jensox stays alert in the square while the sounds of the battle to the South ring about, and even for a few minutes after the noise ceases. Eventually though, if no more trouble presents itself he'll cautiously wander the town, keeping Nova close, trying to locate the guard post mentioned by the Sheriff. He won't enter/bother anyone in the post, but just wants to have his bearings for tomorrow.

Father Zantus walks slowly over to the goblin lying dead at Vano's feet.  He looks the tiny creature over from head to toe without touching it, then crouches down at the body's side.  "Interesting.  Weaker than normal, you said?  I don't feel any lingering negative energy coming from the creature."  Reaching down to the ground he picks up a small stick, which he uses in turn to open one of the goblin's eyelids.  He takes a long look into the creature's tiny eyes, then opens its mouth.  "Ah, there it is.  A faint odor of poisonous mushroom on the creature's breath.  Curious.  I wonder how the creature was exposed to such a toxin?"

"Father, it looks like they had some money on them. Maybe it can help fix some of the damage they have done to the town." She gives Father Zanthus 10 of the gold. "Do you perhaps know of a good cleaner? In case I am still to dance at the inn tonight, it would be a better show if I wasn't covered in blood, I think."

"Vano! Are you going to investigate this toxin? That sounds fun! I'll help. I would be happy to help you find a buyer for the weapon, too. Make sure you get the best price. There would only be a small fee, highly discounted from my usual rate since we've fought side by side. I promise I can get you a better deal." Rory grins and claps Vano on the shoulder.

If it is close to the time she is supposed to perform at the Inn she will stay there, go inside and see if she can find the proprietor. And if I remember right this is the inn where her horse is stabled. So she checks on Aria to make sure the goblins didn't kill her.
