The Crags (OOC Thread)

I wanted to take a moment to update everyone who took the time to apply to the game. I’ve received a lot of applications to participate in Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, and virtually all of the RTJs have had a lot of thought and effort put into them. I plan to carefully read over everyone’s submissions this weekend and will reach out to each of you with decisions on Saturday and Sunday.

In the meantime, thank you to all of you who applied to take part. I really appreciate your interest.

The Crags (OOC Thread)

Hi, everyone! I'm the party Graybeard, here for the nostalgia. Thirty-five years in the hobby, and I've never had an opportunity to play this scenario.

I'd like to have an idea of what everyone else wants to do before I pick my own character. Especially in older editions, players had this annoying habit of refusing to play a healer type, so I'd step up and do it. 90% of the time, this meant I played clerics, so I've gotten a lot of practice at being effective with one.

But, really, I can play anything. Even a 1st-ed illusionist. I actually once made a bard -- and that required ridiculous stats (four had to be 15+), and a very specific set of class changes. You had to start as a fighter, then somewhere between 5th and 7th level change to a thief; again, between 5th and 9th level, you had to change class again to druid, but it would actually change you to a bard. So you had to gain somewhere between 26,000 and 360,000 XP just to attain this class.

Heck. It's not a class in the OSRIC book, but if we imported it from the PHB, how would we handle that?

I’ll confess, it’s been some time since I read over the specifics of the Bard class in the Player’s Handbook. I’ll spend some time refamiliarizing myself with them over the next day or so, and let you know what might be possible.

For myself, I don’t think I ever took a stab at the class. The requirements, as you’ve already pointed out, were...extreme. :)

The Crags (OOC Thread)

Hi, everyone. I'm another 35-year TTRPG hobbyist. Although to be fair, I have gone on hiatus a few times over the years for one reason or another. I am excited to be a part of this little Expedition. This is one of the greats that I never got around to playing back in the day.

Believe it or not, the character concept I have been stewing over is either a:
  • Human Cleric of Boccob
  • Dual class Human Cleric/Magic-User, or
  • Multi-class Half-Elven Cleric/Magic User

I could easily go a different route altogether, though, depending on what everyone else prefers to play. I look forward to meeting you all in the game!

The Crags (OOC Thread)

Hello all!

Another Graybeard here   )))

I though a bit about playing a Bard for this game...
I remember one guy actually did it, in our group, and became a Bard.
Kudos to him.
For me, the horrible part - besides the wild XP and stuff -, was that when you switch classes, and go from Fighter 5+ or whatever, to Thief, you actually play a 1st level Thief (!!!) in EVERYTHING (except that you keep your HP).
So here you are, in a group of levels 5 to 9, as level 1 Thief.
Wonderful group balance  )))

Anyhow, I toyed with a couple ideas (Bard being one of them), but what I am working on now, and would go for as my first choice, is Monk.
I am totally open to changing this, though, and doing whatever can best fit the party balance.

But, I'll go with Monk for the time being.

If you go with Cleric, Azad, what God and/or Alignement would you be aiming for?
We could maybe make both our characters somehow linked if you'd be up for that.
And maybe with others (like Sir Cal, if he is a Paladin)?

My idea was a Human Monk.
A relatively pure Flan (as racial origin), born in Geoff, and who has mainly lived there.

I was go going for LG alignement (but can change to LN if better for the group dynamics - for example, it could be Boccob, like you, Herodian, but I am not sure that would work).

I was imagining him to be a follower of Allitur (LG god)--
https://greyhawkonline.com/gre...ex.php?title=Allitur
--since it states that "in Flan culture, Allitur's name is invoked during trials, diplomatic meetings and other official events. His clergy serve as judges, legal counsel, scribe laws and arbitrate disputes. They have a martial bent because of their role as enactors of punishments for criminals and oath-breakers", so I thought that would fit well for the mission and my idea of a very Law-abiding and enforcing monk etc..
But I could go with Pelor or St. Cuthbert (who is either LG or LN, he was LG in first edition).

I am open to ideas, suggestions and such to fit the group, and have common backgrounds or such.

Re: The Crags (OOC Thread)

Pangea:
And maybe with others (like Sir Cal, if he is a Paladin)?

I'd like to point out a particular restriction on paladins that, frankly, made them a pain in the rear back in 1E. By the book, paladins will only associate with non-Good characters for a single mission, and only if that mission obviously intends on doing 'lawful good' stuff.

With all the other restrictions placed on 1E paladins, this one's the worst. It means the entire party has to be on-board with toeing the paladin's line, or he is required to leave the party after only one adventure.

It's even worse if you use Unearthed Arcana, because it adds all the chivalric frippery to the paladin's stick-in-the-mud.

That being said, if someone meets the requirements, the DM is on-board with handling it properly, and everyone else agrees to be Shining Heroes of Light, having a paladin front-and-center can make the entire party an unstoppable juggernaut.

Re: The Crags (OOC Thread)

In reply to Azad Rola (msg # 7):

If someone wants to play a paladin I'd adjust to make that work. I decided on Boccob as diety because I imagine that Herodian is on board to document the strange events taking place in the area. He's a historian of sorts, which to my mind, seemed under the auspices of Knowledge. I am not aware of any Greyhawk lore that either confirms or refutes that, though. Greyhawk is a setting I haven't spent any time with since, well... a long time ago.

Re: The Crags (OOC Thread)

I’ll throw in that I might be inclined to be a bit “looser” with the paladin’s constraints in this case, as this is a “one time” mission aimed at preserving innocents from the marauding monsters that have been descending into the Duchy.

Re: The Crags (OOC Thread)

So, some questions:

STR has "MP:" listed... what is that?

And INT has "SL:   LS:    % MS:", I imagine that is, in order: Min' # of spells per level ; % to know spells ; Max'  # of spells per level (or is SL: different?)

There are some differences between my old book (1st Ed ADnD) and this Osric updated 2nd Ed File I found on the Net.
I imagine we go with Osric in that case?

And... the Monk attacks as a Thief with weapons, thus only 1 attack/round in that case, correct?

Finally... using Open Hand attacks, the Monk does not bypass any kind of immunity to non-Magic weapons etc., right?
So I imagine it is important to take 1 Magic weapon for such cases?
(I only remember enemies immune to non Magic weapons... but was there already DR and Cold Iron etc., is it important to take such weapons?).
