Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

While Tobias backed away past Jeffrey and Alvar, Dumoss drifted up closer to the bear, on the right side of the cavern.

The bear swung its head back and forth watching the people in front of it.

As Tobias got farther away with his staff, the red glint in the bear's eyes lessened.

The bear sniffed the air and rumbled low in its chest but didn't advance towards the line of people in front of it.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

The burgundy light from Tobias's staff lit the rest of the passage as he moved down it.

At the end, on a ledge was the huddled shape of a small child.

He was curled into a tight ball on a slight protrusion of stone just out of reach of a bear.

There were fresh claw marks on the surface of the rough stone, up to the edge of the ledge, showing where the bear had tried to reach him.

A tiny whimper escaped from Leland.
It looked like he scrunched into an even tighter ball at the mention of the bear.

In reply to Oracle (msg # 51):

"It's all right, Leland, we will keep you safe, but we must leave here," Jeffrey spoke softly and tried to reassure the boy. "Tobias, do you think you can carry him, I would like to be able to us my sword if possible," Jeffrey whispered to Tobias as he didn't want the boy to be any more frightened.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

When Jeffery followed Tobias, the bear moved closer to Dumoss.
There were only two people in front of the bear and they were spread out on either side of the cavern.

It sniffed and growled as it approached.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

Tobias turned slightly toward Jeffrey with a slightly incredulous look on his haggard face, made even more gaunt by the shadows of the strange light from his staff.

"WHAT? I- I..." finally understanding the reasoning, "I- I can try."

He stepped forward then slowly, reaching out his hand toward the boy. "Your friends are up top. They sought us to come find you. Come Leland, we must go now. Close your eyes if you want, it's alright. You're a stout lad, you're going to have to help me... come on..."

OOC: Tobias is a weakling, but he's smart enough to know that he'd be even worse at any sort of melee against a bear...

With some coaxing, Leland slid off of the shelf onto Tobias.

He clung to Tobas like a drowning man. Tobias was almost immobilized by being wrapped in the tight grip of the boy's arms and legs.

With bow in the ready. Trying to keep the bears focus; and making sure Jeffrey, Tobias and the child have a bit of a head start, I start following quickly.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

Tobias gasped, nearly choking from the boy's grasp, tiny white bursts of light were swimming around his vision. He followed Jeffrey, but slowly, not particularly agile to begin with, but worse now that he had a passenger! Concentrating on his steps so as not to fall, he leaned heavily on his staff for support. He hoped to get Leland to safety!

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

Shrieks suddenly echo around in the cavern startling the bear.
It backs towards the entrance it came from while shaking its head occasionally.

Everyone hears, "The Bear! Its going to eat him! between the shrieks of the smaller children.

Alvar glances up and sees that the children have returned with a rope.

"Children, quickly before the bear charges wrap the rope around a tree and throw both ends down. Dumoss keep focused on the bear and I will tie Leland to the rope. Alvar, we need to start getting out of here. Why don't you go first while we keep an eye on the bear."

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

"Shhh!" Tobias hissed as he tried to trundle the lad toward the cavern entrance. This little bit of effort left him winded! He could feel his meager strength fading quickly due to fatigue.

"Ease back, no sudden movements..." he panted.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

Alvar was moved by Jeffery's urgency to use his athletics and climb the roots that Dumoss had used to get down.

From the top he rallied the kids to run the rope around a nearby tree and hold both ends steady for Jeffery to reach.

He was ready to help pull the rope once the boy was secured to it.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

Almost collapsing, Tobias got Leland to the bottom of the rubble slope.
Unfortunately, to reach the bottom of the cavern, one side of the rope had to be much longer than the other.
There was not enough for both ends to hang down within reach.
One end had to be tied around the tree if an adult was going to use the rope to climb out.

With one end hanging down while the children and Alvar held to the other, together they were able to draw Leland up the side and out to safety.

While this was happening, the bear was again approaching Dumoss with teeth exposed.

"Back away Dumoss, slowly," Tobias said quietly.

He held the burgundy light atop his staff as high as he could, hoping perhaps that the unusual and bright light might give the bear pause. There was something very unusual about the creature, but physical exertion had left the young wizard a little light headed.

OOC: Will try to retreat slowly with Dumoss.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

Tobias felt that increasingly familiar tightening in his throat, the weight of dread settling over him once more. They had gotten Leland to safety, but apparently the bear's trepidation was waning. Dumoss and Jeffrey had bravely kept the beast distracted, the Haggard could not let them be harmed if he had it within his power to help them.

Power...

He felt it gathering once more within, felt the mingled thrill and chill of his magic. Almost unbidden - almost - words came to his lips, commanding the beast to succumb to sleep as Tobias gestured to cast a veil over the cavern's denizen.

"Leig leis a ’ghainmhich cadail do shùilean a lìonadh agus do inntinn a mhùchadh!"

OOC: Casting Veil of Sleep once more, bear must Save or be slept.

Chapter 2: A Sinking Situation

Tobias nearly collapsed from the expenditure. He'd put nearly everything he had left into that spell. He could only nod at the offered help getting out. He jutted his head in the direction of the tunnel, obviously too weak to climb the rope.

His eyes seemed to be even more sunken and his skin was nearly gray in color. He clutched at the staff which he used now, to mostly hold himself upright. Though the bear was now sleeping, it was, assuredly, not likely to remain there long!
