Deck of Serpents - Cosmology

Among the Nine Spheres, many Mortals cast the Tiles of the Deck of Serpents to unravel the threads of past, present and future. Cards, tiles, stones: each Realm has its own Deck, their own weights on those drawn, and the pattern in which they are laid. What remains the same, or close enough, is the Deck itself

Each Deck holds thirteen Dens, more or less, and each Dens four Archetypes, together with a handful of unaligned Tiles. Like all else about the Deck, these are in flux between the Realms and the mortals who reside in them. But enough is common between them to speak in broad terms
  • The High Circle: :
    • Den of Life, sometimes called Spring
    • Den of Time, sometimes called Norn or Nether
    • Den of Death, sometimes called Winter
  • The Bough Circle: :
    • Den of Sky, sometimes called Air
    • Den of Earth, sometimes called Fulcrum
    • Den of Sea, sometimes called Water
  • The Deep Circle :
    • Den of Dark, sometimes called Ice
    • Den of Umbra, sometimes called Secrets
    • Den of Light, sometimes called Fire
  • The Sought Circle :
    • Den of Aether
    • Den of Essence
    • Den of Abyss
  • Den of Fate, sometimes called The Heart

It is said the Deck of Serpents holds the truth of Creation

It is said the Deck is Creation

It is said, but by whom?

The High Circle

Sometimes called the Crown, the High Circle represents the passage of all things through Creation - be they creatures or men, Monsters or Divine, even Creation itself. It speaks of beginnings and endings and the cycle of journeys in between

Within the High Circle, there are usually three Dens:
  • Den of Life, sometimes called the Den of Spring and aligned with Balance. Its Tiles are: the Progenitor (or Mother); the Weaver; the Healer and the Seed.
  • Den of Time, sometimes called the Den of Norns or The Nether and aligned with Law. Its Tiles are: the Mason; the Skald (or Lorekeeper); the Herald and the Path.
  • Den of Death, sometimes called the Den of Winter and aligned with Chaos. Its Tiles are: the Knight; the Shade; the Gatekeeper (or King) and the Barrow.

Between these Dens, or between the High Circle and Heart, readers of the Deck speak of four Nests whose Tiles may occur, now and then:
  • Nest of the Hearth, sitting between Life and Time and whose Tile is the City
  • Nest of Kinship, sitting between Time and Death and whose Tile is the Father (or Teacher)
  • Nest of the Bound, sitting between Death and Life and whose Tile is the Haunt
  • Nest of Prophecy, sitting between Time and Fate and whose Tile is the Blind Seer

The Bough Circle

Within the Deck, the Bough Circle represents the Elemental fabric of Creation and those things within it - be they mortal or Realm. It speaks of physicality and breath and blood.

Within the Bough Circle, there are usually three Dens:
  • Den of Sky, sometimes called the Den of Air and aligned with Balance. Its Tiles are: the Sparrow (or Hawk); the Scholar; the Alchemist and the Storm.
  • Den of Earth, sometimes called the Den of Fulcrum and aligned with Law. Its Tiles are: the Mason; the Stag (or Hound); the Druid and the Giant.
  • Den of Sea, sometimes called the Den of Water and aligned with Chaos. Its Tiles are: the Fisher; the Navigator; the Minnow (or Shark) and the Maelstrom.

Between these Dens, or between the Bough Circle and Heart, readers of the Deck speak of four Nests whose Tiles may occur, now and then:
  • Nest of Dust, sitting between Sky and Earth and whose Tile is the Dreamer
  • Nest of Silt, sitting between Earth and Sea and whose Tile is the Tide
  • Nest of Mist, sitting between Sea and Sky and whose Tile is the Wanderer
  • Nest of Ley, sitting between Earth and Fate and whose Tile is the Menhir

The Deep Circle

Sometimes called the Well, the Deep Circle represents the pillars and lies upon which reality is built, the fundamental forces which support the fabric of Creation, its cycles both material and ethereal

Within the Deep Circle, there are usually three Dens:
  • Den of Dark, sometimes called the Den of Ice and aligned with Balance. Its Tiles are: the Bastion (or Feast); the Lord; the Seducer and the Night.
  • Den of Umbra, sometimes called the Den of Secrets and aligned with Law. Its Tiles are: the Court; the Jester (or Child); the Charlatan and the Twilight.
  • Den of Light, sometimes called the Den of Fire and aligned with Chaos. Its Tiles are: the Forge; the Lady; the Priest (or Hierophant) and the Noon.

Between these Dens, or between the Deep Circle and Heart, readers of the Deck speak of four Nests whose Tiles may occur, now and then:
  • Nest of Fear, sitting between Dark and Umbra and whose Tile is the Pit or Assassin
  • Nest of Courage, sitting between Umbra and Light and whose Tile is the Peak or Horde
  • Nest of Madness, sitting between Light and Dark and whose Tile is the Hermit
  • Nest of the Veil, sitting between Umbra and Fate and whose Tile is the Gateway

The Sought Circle

Sometimes called the Root, the Sought Circle represents the metaphysical fabric of Creation and the forces pulling and pushing those within it - or with which they may pull or push back

Within the Sought Circle, there are usually three Dens:
  • Den of Aether,  aligned with Balance. Its Tiles are: the Dwarf (or Elf); the Messenger; the Champion and the Cantrip.
  • Den of Essence,  aligned with Law. Its Tiles are: the Soul; the Magi (or Monster); the Tree and the Rune.
  • Den of Abyss,  aligned with Chaos. Its Tiles are: the Troll; the Torturer; the Apocalypse (or Blight) and the Circle.

Between these Dens, or between the Sought Circle and Heart, readers of the Deck speak of four Nests whose Tiles may occur, now and then:
  • Nest of Blessings, sitting between Aether and Essence and whose Tile is the Angel
  • Nest of Curses, sitting between Essence and Abyss and whose Tile is the Devil
  • Nest of Void, sitting between Abyss and Aether and whose Tile is the Unknown
  • Nest of Serpent, sitting between Essence and Fate and whose Tile is the Serpent

The Heart

Often considered interchangeably, the Heart is the Den of Fate and it is the Heart of Creation. It represents the journey beyond Ragnarok and the Shattering that came with it; an evolution of the Realms and the Divine, or perhaps a final throw before all fades and is forgotten

Little is known of the Heart, beyond its Den and the Nests which circle it:
  • Den of Fates, sometimes called the Heart or the Nexus, and unaligned. Its Tiles are: the Chain; the Philosopher; the Divine and the Coin.
  • Nest of Prophecy, sitting between Fate and Time and whose Tile is the Blind Seer
  • Nest of Ley, sitting between Fate and Earth and whose Tile is the Menhir
  • Nest of the Veil, sitting between Fate and Umbra and whose Tile is the Gateway
  • Nest of Serpent, sitting between Fate and Essence and whose Tile is the Serpent
