In reply to Tortuga (msg # 3):

You're playing Lucy Villanueva, a Brooklyn beat cop who is also secretly a member of The Union a network of blue collar hunters. We're gonna start in medias res. A fellow member of The Union, a cop in a different precinct has called you for backup.

You step into the place Garcia asked you to meet. It's a dimly lit bar, buzzing with the sound of conversation and a DJ  lazily playing top 40 hits. As you approach, Garcia points at an untouched glass of beer, obviously anticipating you.

"It's good to see you Lucy. Thanks for coming so quickly. We have a bit of a... situation."

I approach the open seat and untouched beer. This place is known for being the rendezvous point around town for bad news.

“Garcia. What can I do for you?”

“Well, you know Diane, the dispatcher? The one that has the...hunches? Well she told me to take a look into something. And I think you should too.”

With a click, she unlocks her phone, sets the brightness to high, and slides it across the table to you.

“Over the past 3 years, 43 kids have gone missing all over Brooklyn. Almost none of them have been reported missing, and the ones that have have totally fallen through the cracks.”

Swiping through the gallery on her phone, she shows you picture after picture of missing kids who, for whatever reason, aren’t reported missing.

“I’m scared, Luse. I’m worried someone- or something-is covering these disappearances up. Of the 43, I was able to find one active case. It’s being handled by Detective Barker.”

The name causes a chill to run through your spine. Barker was your old partner.

In reply to Tortuga (msg # 6):

Baker? Why the hell is Baker handling this case? I don’t like this. Kids disappearing is one thing, but a repeated case all over Brooklyn is troubling.

“That’s...interesting. You said this has taken place over the past 3 years? Why didn’t this raise flags earlier??”

Leaning back, I take a sip of the murky brown beer in front of me. Brooklyn Summer. I wonder if any of these kids are gonna know the taste of this beer, or is it too late...

“Garcia, I don’t think we can let Baker look into this on his own. And I know you’re scared. But someone—people—need to figure this out, and I don’t think it can be done alone. What other information do you have?”
