After School Special

“If I looked as good as you do in a sweater, I think we might have to do that, so that I can keep looking at you in that sweater,” Jack says with a smile as he walks with her, holding her hand as they walk through the mall toward the shop with the suits. His eyes actively seeking out problems from a far shot away. Turning his eyes slightly over toward her as they walk past various stands, and he is given a chance to check out other shops.

Being in Minneapolis and not rural Minnesota, the foot traffic is assorted in both fitness level, ethnicity and apparent wealth. He doesn’t really look at anyone though for more than a few moments, only paying attention to the handful of folks with conceal-carry pistols in their beltlines. But, at a glance, he gets the impression that most of them are just middle-aged who have a big stiffy for the second amendment.

Nobody is sweating profusely or looking around like they expect to carry out some sort of attack. No signs of explosive devices.

Walking into the suit shop, he is talking with her about the notion of the dance, “Light in the Darkness, got it,” he confirms. “Did I tell you that I can see in the dark?” he questions as they walk in, all quiet and into her ear.

Turning his attention from the beautiful buxom girl at his side to the clerk, Jack nods his head slightly.

“I need a suit for a dance, she’s going to help pick it,”
he tells the clerk.

Lydia nods when the sales clerk comes up with a blue suit.  "Oh yes! Absolutely.  Try that on!"

You head for the dressing room and try the suit on.  The clerk seems to know their job.  It's a little tight around the waist and needs a little more in the shoulders.  But otherwise, not bad.

As you fall in love with your reflection, you happen to 'see' the store with the weird mirror.  A couple of men are walking into it again.

The store with the weird mirror is about seven shops down

Jack puts on the suit and having checked himself out in the mirror, he walks out to let Lydia get a good look before accepting that she’d picked right almost immediately. “I like it,” he notes. Walking back into the changing room so that he can swap back into his street clothes.

As he’s putting back on his khakis and long-sleeve shirt, he notices the action in the other suit store with the high tech mirror.

He briefly considers sending a message to someone, but he isn’t sure there’s anything they can do that won’t just get the mirror shut down and give things away. He’ll need to talk to Kevin and the crew at school to see if they can get surveillance up, probably.

Just to make sure that whatever they do, however, he keeps an eye on those who entered whenever they come back out.

I swear the place with the high tech mirror was a suit store, I though that it might actually be where we ended up going. In any case, what was the name of the guy associated with it? I’ve done a bad job of having you keep updating the Who’s Who file.

It was a men's store.  But a different one than the one you're in.  The name you were given was Pale Image.  My bad for not updating.  I'll add him in now.  Thanks.

The men disappear into the mirror.  As the clerk makes you stand in front of the store mirror and makes some marks for the final tailoring, you see the men emerge back from the mirror.  They are both carrying messenger bags now.  They head out of the store and start to leave the mall.

While he’s standing in front of the mirror, Jack pulls out the burner phone and puts in the simcard. He sends off a quick text to Kevin: Two guys just visited the tech guy in the Southdale Mall. They’re headed toward the east exit if you’re interested in seeing what they’re up to, I’ll send you their license plate number and make/model.

Then puts the phone back away in his pocket, checking himself in the mirror, occasionally throwing a glance over at Lydia to make sure that she doesn’t feel neglected.

“You like it?” he asks, looking at her with a smile.

Lydia is bright red.  She seems to like it.

The clerk finishes tailoring and you pay up.  The suit will be ready to pick up by Wednesday.  Plenty of time before the dance Saturday.

Sure.

Lydia leads you to a women's clothing store.  "My turn," she says.

She starts leafing through various dresses.  "You see anything that looks good?"

Not sure if you wanted to fashion plate like the suit or not. If not, I'll pick one

While she is rummaging, your burner vibes.  Kevin.  OK.  Will look into it.  Did U get enrolled?

Jack makes sure to remember to pick up the suit on Wednesday and follows after Lydia, gently taking her hand again as they walk through the mall. As they walk, he holds up the burner phone for her to see, “I’m letting someone know about some crime I saw, so that someone else can look into it,” he mentions quietly into her ear as they walk.

Holding the text in a spot where she can look at it.

He’d rather not have her questioning the usage of the burner. He sends off another text to Kevin: I did, it was suggested by someone you lay low to avoid <first name of guy mentioned> since they’re looking for you, by the way. I figured you’re always laying low, so didn’t mention it earlier.

He throws another glance to keep track of the guys from Pale Light’s shop.

Tracking them so that he can pass along the details of their vehicle.

As they get to the women’s store, he looks at the various cuts and then towards Lydia several times. “Well, I could ask you to Pretty Woman montage me, right? I think you’d look fabulous in something that accentuates your eyes and maybe cut to show off the uh,” he pauses, and then asks, “Assets? Low cut, I mean. But that might be a bit much for homecoming? I don’t know. I think you’d look hot, but I figure you’d rather avoid the shade from other girls and other boys staring at you?”

In reply to Jack Sharpe (msg # 729):

The guys move out to the parking lot.  A tan minivan driven by a woman pulls up.  They hop in.  The woman looks like a soccer mom.  You can 'hear' her with a little bit of concentration.

"Hey honey!  Jacky's sick.  The school called and said she'd been barfing all afternoon.  When I got there, she was running a temperature.  I think it's just a bug.  Mom's with her now.  That means we're all gonna get it.  Joys of having kids.  Hiya Barney."

One of the men, who's been checking his briefcase, raises his head and nods.  Soccer Mom pulls away from the curb.  The other guy, who you guess is her husband mumbles something. When he opens his mouth, it's not a human voice.  It's a sound that comes across on a number of various frequencies all at once.  Like someone's taken the sound of glass being dragged across glass, loaded it into a synthesizer, and rerecorded it in a number of different keys all going at different speeds.

Soccer Mom shrugs as she heads out towards  the mall entrance.  "Repair guy said it'd be around five hundred.  I told him I thought that was too much. But we gotta have heat, right?"

Lydia punches you on the arm.  You'd wandered off for a moment.  "What about this one?"

Can you reduce the width on the image, make it a hyperlink or remove it? Broad images throw off my line breaks and everything becomes really long sentences for the next 20 posts otherwise, thanks!.

Jack, listening in, hears the name 'Jacky' and has to wonder if that's a codename thing, but doesn't react to it. Just glances around a little, makes sure to send one last message to Kevin: Tan van, <license plate number.> Driven by a woman, two men. One of them might be some sort of synthetic though they have normal circulation. Going to need a new burner after this.

Then goes back to paying attention to his girlfriend, only looking up from time to time as he focuses on her. Not watching her in the changing room, though he clearly could have.

When she comes out in the lilac blue dress with a mile of cleavage showing, considering how busty she is, he looks her up and down and nods in approval. Clearly admiring her and moving from where he'd been leaning to turn her in a circle and admire it from all sides.

"You look great, Lyds,"
he tells her and leans over to kiss her on the cheek.

Poor Lydia.  She's as red as a lobster by the time you plant a peck on the cheek.

"...'kay..." she mumbles.  "I'll go with this one then.  We'll look good."

While she goes to change back, Kevin responds.  Will look into it. Chester got away.

Back at the men's shop, the mirror is acting up again.  It seems to fuzz out for a moment and then it turns black.  Like a tunnel opening.  A man pushing a crate on a dolly steps through.  The crate seems to be Jack-proof.  It's non X ray and cloaked for heat signature.  There's a high pitched humming sound coming from inside it though.

The mirror unfuzzes, and the man wheels the crate to the shop's storeroom.  He deposits it there, parks the dolly, and then busies himself with regular shop type stuff.

Lydia comes back from the cash register.  "Okay.  We are wardrobed up.  You wanna do somethin' else?"

Endlessly amused by how easy his girlfriend is to make blush, Jack nods in agreement and watches her idly for a moment when she goes to change, then, remembering his promises to himself stops doing that. Instead he puts his back to the dressing room to avoid the allure, though he does keep his ears open in case something happens. Somehow. Inside the dressing room.

Pulling out the phone again, he reads and in thought about Chester, sends: Did you check out the strip club he mentioned? Shutting down phone now. Talk to you later.

Turning his attention over toward the mirror, he tilts his head slightly at the humming. Humming is an indication of something being highly energetic. Which makes it somewhat of a priority, pulling the sim card from the burner and depositing it back into his pocket, he pulls out his regular phone and sends a message to HT: HT. I’m at the mall with my girlfriend, I noticed people coming and going from a mirror I’m told leads to the Pale Image’s workshop/salesroom. The thing that really got my attention is an unscannable box emitting a humming sound.

As Lydia comes out, he smiles at her and gently embraces her for a moment, thinking for a second before he answers, “I sorta wish you could go to the dance in a fuzzy sweater. It makes you so soft, like a little sheep. Of course, let’s go find something to do,” he confirms and offers her a hand and will briskly lead her out of the mall.

Assuming she follows along, he leads her to a spot out of the line of sight of others and out of the scope of nearby cameras. And then gently scoops her up, flying upwards at a decent pace before moving toward a park near the Mississippi.

HT responds.  Thanks for heads up.  Will handle.

Lydia blinks, returning the hug, but seemingly surprised.  "Sheep?  Like ba-baa black sheep have you any wool?"

You aren't sure if she's pleased with the analogy or not.  But she seems to totally forgive you with the flying.  Squeeing in delight, she tightly shuts her eyes as you lift off, and then bravely opens one of them.  She clutches around your neck harder and murmurs, "So help me...I swear if you let go..."

But she's laughing out loud a moment later.

When you descend and release her, she sort of almost twirls, clapping her hands.  "Oh Jeez! That was frickin' awesome!  Cold, but awesome!  I...just wow!"

She grabs the front of your shirt, stands on her tiptoes, looks you in the eyes, and says, "I'm so glad you're you."

Then she kisses you.  A big, soulful one.

Jack smirks a little. A sheep is pretty much the most adorable thing to be compared to, in his opinion, but perhaps something a bit more direct would work, “A little fuzzy fox?” he questions, smiling at her.

As they fly through the air, he shows briefly an impish little grin that she can’t see and has a brief internal debate about whether pranking her would be appropriate. He decides that she’d probably be mildly traumatized by the drop, so doesn’t do it. Instead, he makes sure to just continue to keep her stable and braced across the spine, most importantly.

Pleased as punch at her response, he says, “I’m glad you enjoyed it. The cold, right,” he confirms and looks her up and down, and then, the embrace. Even as she is grabbing him by the shirt and raising up to his level, he watches her.

He’s a little stunned. A surprise, but a welcome one. The surprise making his reflexes react, and his attention focus. Drawing the moment out.

Resisting the urge to get handsy, he just puts his hands on her lower back and helps her stand on her tiptoes with a little assist for as long as she wants to stay at that level, and returns the kiss with equal measure.

“I don’t think at this moment anyone is gladder to be who they are, than I am,”
he replies with a smile when they finally part.

Jack is many things, but a saint he is not, and a gorgeous generously curved girl like Lydia is all he has ever dreamed about. He slowly goes for over the shirt, then under the shirt, and basically pushes the boundaries until he gets the impression she isn’t inclined to keep going. Which it turns out, she’s inclined to keep going all the way. Though once they get past heavy groping, he suggests, “I’ll take us to my place, my aunt is out at yoga, okay?” and the afternoon resumes.

The young meta does his best to keep in control throughout the afternoon, and to give at least as much as he gets. Though for him, he also makes sure to admire everything he can so that he can remember everything unencumbered by the layers of clothing, forever.

A while later..

Picking her up again, Jack flies with Lydia to Colby’s family’s restaurant and gets them both some pizza and plenty to drink. Giving each other smiles and flirty little blushes as they remember their afternoon together. Once he has spent a while more with her, he walks her to her house.

They share a longer kiss, down the block from her house and then a more chaste one closer to the house. Since her parents will undoubtedly be watching.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,”
he tells her and after a few last waves and a standard ‘Minnesota goodbye’ that lingers a bit longer than necessary, he takes off for home.

Knowing it'll mean a lot to her, and seeing as he already sort of misses her, he sends her a quick text: I had a great time today.

That was vague enough, I hope.

Meanwhile...in the BE lair...Prophet Ezekiel stands up and shouts, "Rejoice!  The Messiah has been conceived!"

Just kidding.  I hate those kind of story lines.  And yes, you kept us PG 13.  Thanks for keeping it under the radar.  Was mostly curious to see how far Jack would take things.

Lydia can't seem to make eye contact, though that seems to be more from shyness.  And blushing.  This girl blushes when the wind blows.

She seems reluctant to let go of your hand.  There's this sort of fuzzy light around the both of you.  An air of happiness and sunshine surrounds you both, probably sickening everyone passing by.

But who cares about them.  You're both young and you're both in love.  Of course it's love.  Why wouldn't it be?  Worry about that later.

With her taste and smell still present, you head home after dropping her off.

She texts you back.  Me too.  Can't wait to see you soon

Darja gives you a raised eyebrow. "Why do you look like the cat who lapped up the cream?"

She seems in a good mood, as does all the world.

When you walk into school, its obvious something is going down.  Students are bunched up around the entrance, like people gathered around the gorilla cage at the zoo.

The animals they're oogling are Whitefalls and Holister.  The two women are staring daggers at each other.  As you walk up, another teacher walks up and tells them both to go to their classrooms.

Whitefalls clicks her tongue and turns, marching off like she's going to war.

Hollister looks after her, a smirk on her face.  She shakes her head at the intervening teacher and then walks off.  There's a bit of a skip in her step.

HT texts you at the end of Chinese.

Morning Sunshine.  Training this afternoon.  Meet me at the following address.

Google says that's a house two blocks away from the school.

“Just had a good weekend,” Jack answers in Estonian and moves with Darja toward the entrance, watching from a long ways off. As he stands there, he finds himself checking out the teachers to see if he can figure out what these two are dealing with.  It’s curious enough to have his interest, and if he could, he’d be glad to take Mrs. Hollister’s side, probably, and take a piece off of Whitefalls. Whitefalls is a giant B, after all.

Looking over at Darja, he remarks quietly.

“Seeing as this happened at an entrance, I think I want to see if we can get a recording. Mrs. Hollisters is cool, Whitefalls isn’t, so if I can help Mrs. H out, I will,” he remarks to his friend in Estonian. It’s fun having a really uncommon language to speak to her in, they can talk about things in public without risking being overheard and also understood, a very small chance of overlap.

Looking at the text as he walks to his next class, he consults Google-brain and the maps of Minneapolis and the surrounding area he’d digested while practicing languages out of boredom one night.

Two blocks indeed.

Okay. Can you send me a number for someone who operates the cameras outside the school? I want to see if they picked up on something personal. And before you give me crap for using them for personal issues, I just want to help out a nice person against a bully.

Darja's voice changes when she quotes.  It's almost scary how well she can mimic the voice.

It sounds like, assuming the imitation is good, that Whitefalls is the one who said it.

HT texts back.  We can talk about that this afternoon.

Class proceeds fairly quietly.  Casey has an interesting lecture about meta population distributions across the globe.  Not suprisingly, the US has the largest share.  While most metas are on the East and West coast, there's a suprisingly large number along the Great Lakes.

Colby is absent today.

The address HT gave you is a rather non-descript single family off one of the side streets.  You scan it as you look up from the cutesy text Lydia sent you.  No hidden rooms in the house.

HT's SUV is parked in the driveway.  He's standing beside it, pulling fingerless driving gloves onto his hands.

He nods at you as he finishes.

"So.  Today's lesson is a ride along.  We're gonna test what they call your 'sensory limits' by spying on your friend, Mr. Pale Image.  Also...you know.  Do some recon.

"Rule 1.  You stay in the car.   You don't throw punches unless it is absolutely necessary.

Rule 2.  Rule 1 is situational.  Part of what you're being tested on is your common sense.

Rule 3.  Don't let anyone know you're a meta.

“That was cool!” Jack immediately says when she changes her voice, he didn’t know she could do that. Can he do that? Maybe? Muscle control he has. Though she does it so artfully and without practicing he thinks she has a real knack for it.

Best to just let that be her thing, she’ll enjoy that.

“Me either. I didn’t catch that part,”
Jack replies, still talking in Estonian with her, since he doesn’t like being overheard, it’s also good for him to practice with his languages, and as far as he knows she only speaks the two. At some point he’ll have to see if she speaks anything else, like Russian or German or something from the region.

Jack makes note of the house, and notes that it isn’t HT’s as well. He’d seen HT’s house when Darja had pointed it out a week earlier.

“I like your gloves,”
Jack says, for once, not giving Hard Time a hard time. He actually sort of wants fingerless gloves. “Whose house is this?” he asks.

Getting fully into the SUV, he settles the weight back in the seat and listens to the rules, and nods his head slightly at the rules.  As the first explanation is given, he starts to check the area by scanning for signs of the super-tech that he’d seen in the mirror.

Not that he’d find anything identical, but that level of tech isn’t normally found in people’s houses, so if he can spot anything similar in the nearby houses or an unscannable material, he will know what he is looking for.

“Capisco, capo. Parliamo in italiano adesso?”
Jack replies, going back to giving the man a hard time.

“There are a few things I’m looking into at the school, this is possibly connected,” Jack answers as he stretches his limbs a little, debating whether to put down the window for a moment as he relaxes back. Still continually scanning for signs of Pale Image’s place. Which means he’s checking people’s residences. Spotting drugs aplenty, stashed weapons and the like.

Looking back over at HT, he goes on.

“I’ll list them.
1. Something is going on with Dan Cabrizi, or to him. I’m not sure which, but I expect he’s at least somewhat responsible. It could be meta related, but if not, it could be criminal, either way, it’s at my school, so I want to know what the real deal is.
2. Ronald, ‘our’ Ronald is responsible for at least one girl leaving the school. I plan to get to the bottom of that, and I have that from someone I’d put down as a top tier reliable source, she wasn’t lying to me.
3. The BEs and their weapons are a concern, so I’m keeping an eye on that at least at the school. I haven’t been checking out that apartment building of theirs though, I figure you guys and Omen are on that.
4. Finally, as to the footage, Whitefalls and Hollister are getting into things and apparently item one might be part of it, I mean to find out what their thing is. They were arguing just outside the front door,”
he finishes.

Having finished explaining his current concerns at the school, he waits to see what HT has to say before he presses forward with an offensive.

HT listens, brow knit in thought as he turns onto the Interstate.  The two of you are soon heading over the bridge.

"Huh.  Okay.

"I have no idea who Dan Cabrizi is.  If Le-Gut Shot has that one on the radar, she hasn't told me about it.

"Ron's past is..."
He sighs.  "You're referring to a girl named Estelle Guiterrez, right?  We know about the incident.  It's kind of a complicated story.  The short version...which is the only version I can tell you about right now I'm afraid...is that Ron took the blame for something that was outta his control.  That's all there is to say on that.

"The
BEs...Let's save them for another conversation as well.  Gut Shot's got someone lookin' inta them."

You've crossed the river.  Instead of taking the exit to the mall, HT drives past it.  He seems to be heading to the southwest side of town.

"Hollister and Whitefalls are two of your teachers, right?  Why do you think they are a part of whatever's goin' on?  I'm looking for info here.  Not challenging your assumptions."

He finally takes an off ramp.  The area isn't one you're familiar with.  The houses here are fairly nice.  HT pulls over into a parking lot outside of a small community park.  There are a few families in the playground.  Some joggers and a couple of cyclists are using the nature trail for exercise.

He points at a house on the other side of the street.  A two story brick house.  You can see the first floor.  It looks like the usual suburban layout.   The top floor is completed shielded.  You can see through the glass in the windows, but the image seems to be incorrect.  The rooms you can see through the window glass don't fit the layout of the house.  It's like you're looking through the window and seeing the inside of some other house completely.

The tan mini van is sitting in the drive way.  The soccer mom who picked the men up is in the kitchen, apparently making a grilled cheese.  A two or three year old girl is sitting on the floor, playing with some blocks.

HT waves a hand in a general direction.  "Okay.  Gimme a situational analysis.  Whaddya think about the layout and what's goin' on?"

“There are a lot of rumors and I have nothing substantial about Dan, but there are too many random things for it to be a coincidence,” Jack says, without actually listing off all of the things that have contributed to his suspicion. Save for one, which he only shares once the story about Estelle is offered, “And you believe Ron's story about that? If that’s true, then I can also add that Dan was threatening Ron the other day in the cafeteria. About ‘getting him’ something. It's on the list.”

The other explanations earn a brief nod. He isn’t going to push about any of it, but instead he takes the time to start looking over the house. Noting the van, and in seeing the van, he turns his head slightly to see if he can spot Kevin as well.

“First situational analysis. You’re at least two blocks too close, I could have done this from the highway,”
Jack begins. Since that’s not inconsequential to being undetected by a meta like the Pale Image, he suspects. “Second, the windows don’t match the dimensions of the house, tells me that those are screens or at least portals to someplace else and the interior is different. That’s the woman who picked up the guys from the mall, though I don’t see those two. I told Kevin about them though, so he might have them,” he adds.

Seeing as how the little girl doesn’t really fit with some sort of super-crime lab, he takes the time to see if the girl is real or a hologram or a robot or something else entirely.

“The house is probably a lab, safehouse or stash house. But the top floor is shielded from me, visually,”
he goes on and closing his eyes, he tilts his head forward as he rolls down the window, really focusing his hearing on the top floor, trying to hear through the white noise and other sound filters.

"I'm trying to see if I can hear anything,"
he explains quietly while he listens.

After School Special

In reply to Jack Sharpe (msg # 745):

HT stares at you when you talk about Dan and Ron.  He has a look like he's thinking about something, then he taps the wheel with his had.  "I'll take a look into it."

He raises an eyebrow when you talk about the distance. "Really?  That far?"

The noises inside are fairly mundane.  The click clack of the toddler with the blocks.  The clink as the woman makes a casserole in a Pyrex dish.

There's a humming sound.  It sounds like it could be floating down from the upper floor.  It's in the same range as the box you saw at the mall.  But it's not quite as loud.

HT nods at the house.  "Okay.  There are several outstanding warrants on Pale Image.  So we have the right to take him into custody.  And he is not at the mall.  So.  Would you proceed with a raid right now?  What are the reasons for and against doing it?"

As he speaks, he stops and frowns at the rear view mirror.  He's watching a jogger go by.

"Keep watch on the house.  Leaving the keys in the ignition. If things go south, get my truck outta here."

Without a further word, he opens the door and rushes out of the SUV, jogging after the jogger.

After School Special

“I don’t know, I don’t generally test my limits with specific places in mind. I have a vague sense of distance though, yes, further than this by a good range,” Jack acts more vague than he actually feels, mostly because he’d rather not let it be known his exact range, so he determines to keep his exact limits a bit unspecific.

Listening to the humming sound and the sound of the apparent real toddler. Considering the toddler for a moment, he thinks about the question of the raid.

“Well, the humming thing was moved here? The crate?”
he clarifies, that would explain how they’d found the place. Thinking about the kid however, he has some ideas.

Looking over after a breath, he scratches the back of his head and is about to respond with his thoughts on the way to approach the situation. He’d mostly been about to speculate about how to approach the woman off-site so as to leverage her child in negotiations. Threatening to take the kid away would go a long way towards flipping her on Pale Image.

“Ok.”

Switching seats when HT makes his exit, Jack lifts a foot over the center console and is careful not to get wedged in, taking his time to do it at a casual pace.  As he gets switched over, he rolls down the driver’s side window and starts to use a few buttons to angle the mirror so that he can get a look at the other jogger. Curious.

While he waits, he continues to surveil, and pulls out his burner. Swapping in the sim card so that he can check out if there are any messages from Kevin.
