In reply to Smiles (msg # 81):

Coughing and wheezing Tamar strained as she attempted to help more villagers find safety

OOC: I know the “real” layout of the meeting hall is more chaotic than the map the benches are over turned and the people are on ground injured and panicked.

But looking at the distance between Tamar and the green dots. I’m not sure she could reach even the nearest ones and get
Them to safety.

So my post is contingent on, if I can save more people I will. If not I’ll stride toward the cluster of people directly
South of Tamar and save them next round.

And

19:33, Today: Tamar Numida rolled 6 using 1d6 with rolls of 6.  Smoke inhalation Damage .

Ouch! Won’t be staying here too long

Re: THE COUNCIL'S CHOSEN

Too slow. This was forseen.

In the moments it took for Suiadan to get a few more people out, the fire had grown significantly; far more than Suidan can have predicted or hoped.

"We have to-" his shouts were quickly replaced with coughs as the smoke filled his lungs. The only thing left for him to do was leave.

The elf clumsily seeks out the villagers he'd been helping before, grabbing as many as he can before making his way towards the exit.

OOC: Suidan continues his rescue action from the previous turn and strides towards the exit. He take 6 damage from environment.

Re: THE COUNCIL'S CHOSEN

Arisa stumbles over a bench that had been knocked over during the initial panic and she can feel the fire so close behind her that it burns her skin slightly again but that isn’t even the worst of it. As the fire spreads through the old wooden building, the room begins to fill with suffocating smoke. Her eyes start to water uncontrollably making it hard to see and every breath fills her lungs with the toxic air. Regaining her footing, she turns and moves as quickly as she can toward the front of the building, the coughing and choking slowing her down as the smoke tries to catch and smother her before she can escape.

As she stumbles her way along the western wall, using one hand to guide her out of the smoke, she spots another small group of townsfolk huddled among the benches at the back of the room. She quickly makes her way over to them, yelling and urging them to get on their feet and to get moving. She knows that these people are scared but it won’t take long before the whole building collapses on top of them.

”Come on,” she yells through the smoke and cinders now filling the room, ”get your asses up and head for the door, we all have to get out of here before it’s too late! I know you’re scared but you can do it!”.

OOC:
Action 1: Stride 35’ to get to the nearest townsfolk.
Action 2: Encourage them to get moving and start ushering them out.
Action 3: Stride 35’ toward the front door gathering folks as she goes.

Maerk gasped and choked, being one of - if not the - tallest in the room, he had to duck down now to keep his head low enough to get less smokey air. He heard Arisa trying to help others to get clear, and he headed after her, following her by her voice.

When he saw several others clustered near some toppled benches, the large man bellowed, "Grab hold of Maerk, hold fast, Maerk will find you air!"

Maerk felt grasping hands and he made big strides to lead those he could reach, toward the door and the precious air beyond it.

Smoke Inhalation Damage: Maerk rolled 5 - Current HP: 14/20

Re: THE COUNCIL'S CHOSEN

17 Arodus, 4719 AR 12:16:58 PM

All of the harried survivors of this ordeal including yourselves eventually end up outside of the town hall along with the councilors and guards.

After a moment, the soot-stained councilors emerge from the crowd, and Greta Gardania whistles loudly to get the scared crowd's attention. Greta Gardania looks around, hugging some of the townspeople next to her, while others wearily clap her on the back in thanks for their lives.

"What manner of madness just happened? This can be no accident! Did anyone see anything?"

One of the guards who was stationed outside before the fire began raises his hand, then his voice. "Aye," says the wearied, uniformed man.

"The clerks saw everything - it was Calmont, that cad of a bookseller's apprentice. He lit the fires in the halls next to the chambers. He also set that monster loose on the crowd!"

The second guard shouts in assent. "Indeed!" says the grave but steely woman. "And witnesses outside the building saw him run toward Hellknight Hill!" A surprised and worried wave ripples through the crowd at this information, including Warbal's distinct voice:
"The citadel! My bumblebashers!"

Greta raises her hand authoritatively, and the crowd begins to calm. "Friends, we'll get to the bottom of this." She assures them. "But we can't do it alone. Who are the heroes in attendance today?"

See group 4 maps for a pic of Greta Gardania!

Re: THE COUNCIL'S CHOSEN

The tall warrior stood at the edge of the gathering after making sure his new friend, Arisa, was relatively well after all the smoke and flames she and others had endured. His own vestments and whiskers were a bit singed, his throat felt raw and when he tried to speak up, his lungs felt as if they could not properly fill with air.

"Maerk killed the fire-beast. Maerk kills many things. But also, Maerk protects. You want that Maerk protects town? Find starter of flames?"

He motioned toward the Hill with a bearded chin.

The dwarven councilman, Jorsk Hinterclaw steps forward.
"Speak the truth Maerk. Do you have the strength and will in your blood to see this through?"

Jorsk makes steely eye contact with Maerk...as if he's searching Maerk's very soul to see what he's really made of. It is clear from Jorsk's stare that he fully comprehends what the town of Breachill is asking of these young but well meaning fledgling heroes.

Re: THE COUNCIL'S CHOSEN

Maerk's jaw clenched, but it was mostly hidden by his beard... or what was left of it after close encounters with flames. He reached a scarred hand down and lifted the weighted hem of his lamellar kilt, revealing a tremendously muscled thigh and bare hip. The exposing of flesh was not his intention, but rather the revealing of a brand. On his right buttock was a terrible red burn-scar in the shape of a circle with a sword in the center.

It was the mark and symbol of The Vanquishers, an elite, and expensive, mercenary company.

"This was earned by Maerk. Not given out like treat for child!"

It was his answer. Though only the first of many such brands a member of the company might attain, it spoke of a degree of promise as well as prowess. Though new to hire outside of the demands of war, Maerk was certainly no novice with an undented shield.

He shrugged, hefted his shield and placed a hand on the hilt of his worn sword. "Will someone make challenge? This way to prove?"

Jorsk watches Maerk intently. And gives Greta Gardania a brief but pronounced nod.

"Maerk that hill is your challenge. Not the farmers and laborers of Breachill."

Jorsk shakes his head disapprovingly.

Greta steps forward and asks for any additional heroes to present themselves at this time.

Two fine patriots step forward and offer themselves to Breachill's call. Are there any more? This task will be fraught with peril.

Re: THE COUNCIL'S CHOSEN

Arisa steps forward, her face smudged by smoke and soot from the fire, and she quickly wraps her long, thin fingers over Maerk’s sword hand to keep him from drawing it. Her jaw is set as she scans the group of slightly singed council members with her steely-eyed gaze. Her eyes finally alighting on the Dwarven councilman and remaining on him alone as she begins to speak.

”Now, now, I don’t think there is any more need to prove ourselves,” she says, pausing a long moment before continuing on, ”it seems to me as if we have proven our mettle in the crucible of the fire from which we just saved many of you standing here. We didn’t run for safety when we had the opportunity. No, we stayed and helped even at great peril to our own lives. My large friend here spoke the truth, he was the one that killed the fire imp that had started the fires in the first place. Use our actions inside town hall to judge us by and not how long you have known us. We will go to this Hellknight Citadel for you, find out what’s going on, and bring back the man that tried to murder you all. There is just the matter of compensation for our services to discuss”.

After delivering her dramatic speech, Arisa continues to stand tall exuding a sense of bravery and competence while she waits for their response. As she plays the speech back in her mind, a small smile curls her full lips as she remember the play on words that she had thrown in for effect.

Suiadan took longer than he'd hoped to recover from the smoke, but after Arisa gave her speech he nodded in agreement.

"My fellow Elf speaks true. I am Suiadan Sivlei, and my skills are at your service."

There was little else to be said that wasn't already brought to the council's attention by their deeds and Arisa's speech.

Greta Gardania Listens to the others as they step forward, and when they are done she says

"Breachill is in your debt..all of you, and you must be rewarded for your heroics here today."

Jorsk Hinterclaw comes forward and offers up two minor healing potions to the group.

Greta continues:

"Breachill asks that you explore Citadel Altaerein atop Hellknight Hill.  There you will find the Bumblebrasher Goblin Tribe.  You are to make peaceful contact with them and solve whatever issues they are having that would cause them to burn the distress signal.
Secondly You are to find Calmont and bring him back to Breachill for questioning.

For these services you as a group are to receive 10gp for the Bumblebrasher, and 10 additional gp for bringing Calmont. None of these funds are payable until their respective tasks are complete, and this is non-negotiable."

Re: THE COUNCIL'S CHOSEN

Arisa releases Maerk’s hand when she realizes that he isn’t going to draw his massive sword on the crowd even in a show of competence. Stepping forward to place herself in the position of negotiator, she ponders the town’s offer. She has been tracking down criminals and other people on the run for awhile now and, depending on the person, it could be a long and drawn out chase and time costs coins mostly in food, lodging, and paying for information.

The offer would be considered ludicrous in one of the larger cities in Druma or Five Kings Mountains and wouldn’t even be enough to get her back to Kyonin. Still, this is a rather small town and it may be all that they can afford and she would, of course, take into account the two potions that they had already given them. She also had heard the word “non-negotiable” at the end of the offer but, nobody leads with their best offer.

”I’ll take into consideration your generosity with the potions,” she said, one finger tapping her lips in contemplation, ”but in my experience, and I have a lot of experience in chasing down these types of people, it can be a drawn out affair if they are willful and determined. Would the town be willing to throw in some road rations and perhaps provide free lodging while we are in town, at least until we have completed the mission?”.

"Thank you, good Warbal Bumblebrasher...your help is greatly appreciated."

Tamar bent even lower than normal, it was her manner to bow slightly to show respect. This sign of respect was achieved when her eyes were below the person she was showing respect to.

This practice only worked when the speaker and Tamar were of relatively similar heights . Tamar was awkward as she tried to bow deeply enough to show the goblin respect.

Abandoning her fruitless gesture she smiled.

"So, friends....are we ready to venture forth?"
