Campaign Setting

Carrowsport

Carrowsport is the capital city of the duchy of Carras in the kingdom on Salinar. Carrowsport is a coastal city and the primary port for the duchy. The Duchy has been ruled by Duke Jomed for the past 23 years following the Salinar Shadow War, where Jomed was an adventurer who assisted Oewyn Veymoth (now King Oewyn I) to dethrone Carinth Bluelash.

The duchy of Carras is primarily a human settlement, outside of Carrowsport, non-humans are less trusted by the general population, and see a fair amount of discrimination and abuse. Additionally, due to the involvement in necromancers during the Bluelash dynasty, obvious demonstrators of magic are decried as witches and warlocks and seen as working with evil demonic forces.

In the city of Carrowsport, Duke Jomed has begun to change that attitude and atmosphere. Carrowsport is the most accepting when it comes to other races. Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings are commonplace in the city, and even Half-Orcs, Minotaurs, and Gnomes can be found as members of visiting merchant crews as well as the seedier districts in the city. That being said, it is not typical for multi-generations of non-humans having lived in the city.

As for magic, there still is a general fear of necromancy in the city, but the city does have a small academy of magic with a dozen or so members. Additionally, King Jomed does employ a court wizard as his advisor, as well as his apprentices and attendants. Outside of this, magic is kept rather quiet for fear of scandal or retribution.

Under the rule of Duke Jomed, Carrowsport has a more militaristic structure to the daily life. The City Guard and Carrasian Army have flourished. Jomed was careful not to strongly disrupt the noble families, trading companies or black market of their activities prior to the Salinar Shadow War, and him taking over. But the increased military presence in the town is a constant reminder of Jomed’s power.

Campaign Setting

Recent History

For most of its history, Carras has always been the smaller duchy to the south, mostly ignored by the main kingdom of Salinar and the duchy to the north, Whartal.

That changed about 30 years ago, with the rise of Carinth Bluelash becoming king of Salinar. The Bluelash family had ruled over Salinar for over 100 years. Carinth was third in line for the throne, but several accidents placed him in power after his father's death. Rumors abounded for years regarding Carinth's connection to shadow mages who assisted him, doing his dirty work, and advising him on the future.

After the death of Teben Veymoth, father of (now king) Oewyn Veymoth, supposedly from shadow mages sent by Carinth, Oewyn gathered allies to depose the king and uncover the truth. This period of time was known as the Salinar Shadow War. In the end, Oewyn was successful and was installed as king of Salinar. In turn he banished all shadow magic and necromancy from the kingdom of Salinar.

Notable NPCs

NPCs Travelling with the Party

Cobb: Cobb is a male human member of the city guard, essentially a veteran of the guard who never wanted to be placed in a true leadership role (due to politics). He has been comissioned by the Duchy to transport goods from the city of Carrowsport to Kestrel's Keep north of Styrebridge. He has been with the city guard for about 7 years now. Once reaching the Keep, he has been ordered to join the soldiers of Kestrel's Keep until the conflict is resolved, after which he will return to Carrowsport. Cobb is in charge of the wagons only.

Aeril: Aeril is a female human who is also a member of the city guard, functioning as a scout and archer. She has only been with the guards for 3 years, and is not one for the rules and routine of city life. She volunteered to join the expedition, even though she was asked by Cobb to join him, as he is a mentor to her. She also expects to join the soldiers of Kestrel's Keep until the conflict is resolved, but isn't sure what she will do when that is complete.

Stagrock: Stagrock is a male, half-orc thief who has been in Carrowsport off and on for the last 5 years. He is no stranger to being in jail, mostly for starting fights with the wrong people. Cobb got to know him through his years at the city guard. Cobb has protected him from severe punishment in Carrowsport, because he has helped Cobb out in the past. Stagrock has joined the expedition for muscle, and is looking for a new start north of the city. Stagrock will follow Cobb's orders, as needed.

OOC: Please forgive that I have called Stagrock by multiple names. My mistake there.

Tarrin: Tarrin is a male human who is the second nephew of the duke. While he has some skills that could be used in a fight, if necessary, he is mostly there to be transported to Kestrel's Keep to represent Duke Jomed in the region, in case the Duchy needs to be represented diplomatically.

Sister Villa Stint: A priestess of the Church of St. Cuthbert. The castellain requested that a healer be sent with the caravan (along with certain healing supplies), to help with the sick and wounded. Additionally, Sister Villa is very learned in shadow magic, necromancy, and the Obsidian Veil (the order of shadow mages who worked behind the scenes for years). She is not a fighter, and is not expected to help in battle.
