Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

Admittedly I like U.N.I.T. as well, even if it's a little simple and borrowed.

Previously I have used Overwatch, Blackwatch (before the video game existed), and Black Flag for similar agencies.  And I don't have any other immediate ideas to add as competition for the name.

As to office locations I like the following:
The Americas:  Portland, Oregon - Mostly because I'm a West Coast person.
Europe:  Manchester, England - It's NOT London and has an international airport.
Africa:  Cairo, Egypt
The Orient:  Hong Kong or Singapore

With the main office being in the US or England.  For me that's a coin flip.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

I favor Hong Kong its a British Colony, for my character helps her in her work as a actress in Kung Fu movies likely for a front of the agency and a source of income plus where better to study martial arts it has many of them?

Well I stole the agency concept from the Tom Clancy universe.....

I'm on the west coast as well. Although Portland isn't that great of an international hub to South America, which is really what I have in mind for the US location. When I lived in Salem Oregon I'd have to fly from Portland to another city (LA, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Newark) before heading down to Colombia.

Manchester, England is not something I hadn't thought of for a European location.

US or England is where the main office should be. Either will work

I see Hong Kong as probably the best location for an office located in the orient.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

Regarding the US office location, I was originally thinking Denver, CO, but that's a little close to NORAD when it comes to prime nuclear strike targets.  Unfortunately when it comes to American international airports, there are very few that are not in prime nuclear strike zones.

If we like something towards the center line of the US we have the following options without sitting on a prime nuclear target:

Dallas, Texas
Detroit, Michigan
Chicago, Illiniois

West coast:

Anywhere in California really, though lets not do Los Angeles.  That city has it's own smog cloud that can be seen for miles.

East Coast:
Raleigh, N. Carolina
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Boston, Massachusetts
Buffalo, New York

As for main office actually lets go England because I think that could be better politically when potentially dealing with all of the other European agencies.

Blackpool, England might be an odd choice but would help the poor economy.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

I like UNIT (as the name). Perhaps I can work in another alias for my character, "my name is Stewart, Stewart Lethbridge-Stewart".
I've always thought the most central nuclear non-target in the United States to be Springfield, MO. This being said, most central to the world's population would be Alma-Ata, USSR. Plus the WHO just held a conference there, so there could have been a significant intelligence presence in the area recent to the beginning of the game. However, combining the main office with the US office invariably places the US office in New York, next to the UN.
In fact, that was my thought on the backing for the organization. Placing the organization under the auspices of the UN means the organization's personnel are almost invariably working for their native government, as well. If we're gonna play spies, we gotta throw in every twist we can. As a side benefit, the name could become the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce aka UNIT.
No, I don't have anything else to do with my time. Why do you ask?

I’d like to avoid any UN involvement. The big five (China, France, USSR, USA, and UK) would know about the organization and it wouldn’t be very secret for long.

If we need to be international maybe a NATO operation then?

Unless it's an exclusively British operation I can't see the primary HQ being in England.

My preference would be for a US Intelligence outfit similar to Impossible Missions Force (IMF) but coordinating with US allies. Maybe a revival of the O.S.S. (Office of Strategic Services from WW2) or even the original O.S.S. but no one knows that it is still in operation.

Also I'm curious why we want to avoid the largest cities? Seems like they would help with our job of staying hidden.

HQ I'd think New York or Washington DC (or across the river in Virginia), with offices in San Francisco, Rio De Janeiro, Seoul, London, Paris, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Tel Aviv, and Berlin. An office for this level of organization doesn't have to be big, just maintain some safe houses and store supplies.

I think a NATO operation would be discovered pretty fast too. For example it didn't take long for Rainbow Six to be discovered....

Well if the organization is collaboration between the UK and US then main HQ should be in either the USA or England.

I can see the reason for an office in Rio De Janerio, or possibly Buenos Aires for South American operations.

Likewise an office in Istanbul would be centered around Middle East operations.

But I see no reason to have two offices in the US, and three offices in Europe.

The only issue I see with expanding from four to six offices is that the private army is spread out a little more.

I actually do not want safe houses all over the world. Because if we did some players would ALWAYS be going to a safe house because they forgot to bring some piece of equipment. Or to replace stuff they lost instead of trying to procure it on the black market, or using their contact to assist them. Basically instead of having instant access to weapons, ammo and equipment I think it'll make for a better game if the player characters have to either do without, find/steal stuff, or come up with alternatives.

Yes the larger cities would be better.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

My opinions (because I got lots of them)
Agency Name: Unified Intelligence Task Force aka UNIT.
      Cover industry
    1. Photo-Video Journalism could turn a profit, give agents a valid reason for being where they are, and publish one of those tabloids to hide agent communiques in plain sight
    2. Industrial Engineering/Consulting could turn a profit, might allow access to cutting edge technologies
    3. Fashion Design because it's the eighties and I've always wanted something to explain the "Flock of Seagulls" haircut
  • Type of Agency: Off the book’s government espionage agency. Just a suggestion, but could the upheaval following Watergate, the Lavender List, and Peter Jay's appointment leave the agency with no higher level oversight?
  • Outfits: Specialty Clothing.
  • Equipment: Electronic Supplies.
  • Weapons: Well-Armed Agents.
  • Vehicles: Fleet Vehicles.
  • Communications: Computerized.
  • Offices and Distribution: Semi Regional
    [olist]Office Locations
  • Oriental area of operations (includes Australia and Oceania): I like Hong Kong for this
  • European area of operations: I say London, and make this the main office
  • North/South America area of operations: Los Angeles or New York City, avoid Atlanta (no sea port, can't stick the opposition in a container to send them home)
  • Africa area of operations: Nairobi (because it's one of the few large equatorial cities).[.olist]
  • Military Power: Private Army.
  • Medical Care of Agents: all very nice, but do the agents get dental?
  • Sponsorship: Off the books Government.
  • Budget: Small Potatoes.
  • Administrative Control: Agency Protection.
  • Internal Security: Tight.
  • External Infiltration: Information Source.
  • Agency Credentials: Semi-Known.
  • Agency Salary: Well Off.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

I think a regional office in Rome would be cool.  How about the cover business being a high-end courier, often used for sensitive materials?  Something like World Wide Courier or Transportation Services for the legitimate business.  Gives reason for our characters to travel the world.  Or even as a news agency.  I'm good with UNIT for the name of he agency.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

Entertainment as a cover my gal is an actress and needs a valid cover job although she could do Journalism maybe but was planning to do articles for martial arts magazines like Black Belt. From time to time.

But Courier work equals spies in the game its not a good cover. Ever consider criminal activities as a cover smuggling antiquities, art theft and forgery of said art, illegal casinos and the like. It might be shady but if we are fighting scum some of appearing to be scum might be a good thing.

The Agency (needs a name!)

A media company that does television and periodical coverage of martial arts and entertainment could work.

The Agency (needs a name!)

I would include direct to video movies to exploit the new market for that, and could do films anywhere there are offices and a major presence.

The Agency (needs a name!)

I still say the organization could publish something like The Sunday Record, and when the agents have no logical cover story they could claim to be following up a UFO/Sasquatch/Man-bat sighting.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

Broad media will work including magazines, zines (smaller more focused publications), self-published books, a newspaper and maybe even a men's magazine or two. And do direct to video movies and maybe modeling.

I still think a shady line of income would be good not narcotics or human trafficking but well not opposed to other kinds of crime and running mercenaries which could tie into a magazine we could call it International Soldier (covering training, weapons, martial fighting, hot spots, advertisements for such people and the curious of all kinds). And it will be a good cover when dealing with the criminal underworld under a front of some shady group name.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

I kind of agree with Mei, a face we present to the criminal underground would help us in the long run. It could help with supplies and weaponry, information gathering and other stuff we may need that we can't get through legitimate sources.

I'm good with the name of the Agency being UNIT. Short, simple and to the point.

Re: The Agency (needs a name!)

OK we got a name figured out (its now part of the game name), so lets nail down these particulars.

Office locations
  • Oriental area of operations (includes Australia and Oceania):
Hong Kong Seems to be the consensus
  • European area of operations:
Somewhere in the UK is the general consensus. London or Manchester? I could roll a 1d100 even = London, odd = Manchester
  • North America area of operations:
Seems to not be a consensus. I should probably roll a 1d100 even = LA, odd = NYC
  • Africa area of operations:
I think Nairobi will work best because (as someone pointed out) it's one of the few large equatorial cities.
  • South America area of operations:
    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Middle East area of operations:
    Istanbul, Turkey

Cover industry
I think being an industrial consulting firm, that has subsidiary photo/video journalism firm will work best.

Shady line of income idea
I think can be covered by the characters various covers.
