OOC (Questions? Complaints? Ideas?)

James DiAngelo:
Since this is set in a different time, I may use a different version of James.  Maybe a Dedicated or a Wordly Martial Artist.  Or, I may just alter this version a bit.

I’m removing the martial artist OCC’s because I’m  moving away from the “ninja” aspect and martial arts powers that are mystical in nature.

There are now like 20 martial arts powers to choose from. None of which has an attack in which the person being attacked gets no vote (saving throw, dodge etc) when it is used against them.

I have also found it hard to ascertain why PB made certain martial arts forms “exclusive”.  The only exception being ninjitsu which is basically an OCC.

James DiAngelo:
Hey.  Are the Martial Arts forms strictly from N&SS?  Or, can we choose something from Mystic China or the Rifters?

I’m going through the martial arts and sure if I’m going to cross off a bunch which would require something big in your character background to have.

I have looked at the martial arts from Rifters and remember you were thinking of Jeet Kun Do. Most of those were added to the list.

I have not looked at the martial arts forms from Mystic China but some of the powers made it on my list of powers.

I guess I should be more clear and say I am aiming for a game similar to modern/near future spy/espionage/heist/thriller movies and TV shows.

This is not to say the martial arts forms have no place as they are useful in unarmed or melee combat and stealth type situations where even the sound of a suppressed gunshot will give away the team.

Also I already have my BTS2E game which does focus on the paranormal and mysticism. The Mystic China stuff blended with BTS is what the I see the movie “Big Trouble in Little China” as. Seeing that there may be a split between the characters I may end up opening the game up to have to teams. One focused on good, and the other that has good intentions but will be willing to do bad things.

I was looking at Hawaiian Kempo, the art of bone breaking.  Honestly, I kind of want to see how that translates to R/PA combat in a Rifts game.
A Veteran Hunt with Hawaiian Kempo would be pretty cool, I think.  Though, he might be a little more suited as an anti-hero, because a fighting style based on breaking bones just sounds brutal.

I think it's in 10.  There is an article about the Mafia with OCCs in it.

I looked at Rifter 10 and didn't find any Mafia OCC. I did look for wherever the heck The Triad Assassin H2H (I'd call it a ranged combat form) was

I’ll take a look.

I only have a PDF of that one. So much easier at time to open a physical copy of a book.

Yeah, I prefer a physical copy to a virtual one.  Though, I have some of those, too.

So, as a Veteran Grunt, he would automatically have Firearms:  Trained.  Then, taking the Guerilla Warfare program, which includes Sniper, would he then have Marksman?

I have not yet revised the OCC's yet....but you ask a good question.

I think the Veteran Grunt would have a choice between Marksman and CQB to account for having spent many years in service.

By the way you three are the first ones to see "Ranged Combat: Archery" I would seriously like your input on this as I do not have real life experience with using a bow or crossbow as opposed to firearms. This is based on Rifter 45 (I think), as I had partially written it a long time ago and after a laptop died I thought I lost the write up. As it turned out I found the first stages of my write up on an external hard drive and I worked on completing it this weekend/today.

The "Ranged Combat: Archery" is something that Rambo, or Hawkeye would have, as well as a PFRPG Longbowman or the Rifts PsiArcher.

Or, maybe a Tribesman from Rifts:  Spirit West.  I like it.  I can tell you that a 50# pistol crossbow can puncture a car door.

For the record the Kempo write up is pretty good but the writer apparently got Hawaiian Kempo confused with Kapu Ku'ialua (The Hawaiian Art of Bone Breaking sic) a much, much older (primarily grappling) system.

There is no actual connection between the two other than both being taught in the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaiian Kenpo was NOT invented to beat up Samoans (Lol, don't try this at home!). It was brought there by James Mitose (who later went to prison for murder).

The stats are a good working set for Kenpo/Kempo though since it also uses joint locks and grappling.

As for schools being "Rare outside of California and Hawaii" there's one in my hometown in North GA USA. They also teach Gojo-Ryu Karate and have me in sometimes to work on Judo and Wrestling.

Cool.  I know a surprising amount about martial arts, but the only martial arts training I have is Army Basic Combat Training, before they added Combative.  Beside Basic Rifle Marksmanship, and getting to throw a grenade, fire a dummy rocket launcher, and frining a M60 LGPMG, each just once, his consisted primarily of putting on padding, entering a ring, and trying to his another recruit with a padded stick, only one time, and being given a bayonet to put on our rifles and told to go stab a dummy made of wood and a tire, once.  I also learned the Sei San kata from a guy who knew Isshin Ryu, and I achieved a yellow belt in TKD.  I also took out a sniper with a sheathed boot knife in an urban combat training exercise.

My training is considerably more in depth but I never did that sniper with a knife thing. That's sounds cool as s*** (but not for the sniper guy lol).

I have never been in the military but I helped train some of the instructors for the Army Combatives program as a civilian contractor.
