9100 - OOC Discussion

This is the place for everyone to come and discuss what we want from this game.  As yet, it is the only topic I've had time to put up.  (More tonight when I get home from W.O.R.K.)

Meanwhile, drop in, join the discussion, etc.

9100 - OOC Discussion

This post will be a timeline of how development is going.  I've added some resources in the Game Links that may help those without any books.  I've also begun cataloging how I want to do character creation for those who prefer rolling dice.

It is presently Friday, 06 Sep 2019, at 1924 local (Central) time, and I have some things to do that tear me away from the keyboard for a while.  I will be back tonight.

Meanwhile, you folks get started on some characters, please.  You can have two characters if you wish.

If you have questions, be sure to ask!

Saturday Morning, 07 Sep 2019:  Uploaded and linked to Traveller Plus Large Print Edition.  I created this document and its Errata back in 2015 for a friend of mine who is visually impaired.  It is a loving tribute to Ed Messina's original, and is distributed with his kind permission.  There is an accompanying Errata, also available from the Game Links.

Character sheets in Excel 2007 and LibreOffice formats are also available in the Game Links.  I do not recommend trying to edit these from Google Drive (where they are stored) -- please download and work locally from a copy.  Anyone who has trouble with these sheets should please let me know, as I am their author.  (The LibreOffice format sheet was created with, um, version 4.5 for Linux, IIRC?)

This post may get its own topic if it starts to get too long.

I was kinda hoping players would discuss that together and come up with something they wanted to play.  If not, I have a couple of scenarios in mind, but don't want to say anything that might influence that discussion yet.  Maybe I should start a topic for "scenes we'd like to see"?  Yeah.

From what I see in the dice roller log, you're using Classic chargen.  Have you started a character sheet yet?

If your character hasn't aged past a fourth term of service, that B should probably be a C.  (Don't short yerself, mon!)

In answer to your other question:  So far, the game will start "somewhere in the Spinward Marches sector".  That's it for now, pending discussion.  IF discussion does not ensue in the next few days, I may, at that point, take a decision as to where everyone is starting from.

Just a note:  Harry's likely to need a filter mask if we start anywhere with a tainted atmosphere.

Not really, now I have a thread I'll make Harry in there. If we can have two, maybe I'll use Traveller Plus for it.

Re: 9100 - OOC Discussion

Folks, I have to run do some more stuff today - I'm trying to help my son get a sofa for his living room.

I'm not likely to be back until late this evening.  Regrets.

I hate to issue directives like this, but do not use a character generation program without first discussing it with me, please.

A request:  when you make dice rolls in the RPoL dice roller, please tag them with a reason for the roll.  I anticipate the dice roller is gonna get crowded with rolls for the various terms of service for those using the Classic character creation rules, and this will help me keep things straight.

Great End, good Int & Dex. Not too academically inclined, though: probably spent too much school-time training for and winning cross-country competitions.

I generally aim for a maximum of 3 terms (barring rolling 12 to reenlist).
  1. Army would be the easy option. Likely to end up with some weapon skills but a lack of shipboard skills. Highest chance of being kicked out early.
  2. With her Endurance, Scout is an option. Still risky with a 5+ survival roll; there's a 1 in 6 chance of her ending up with the automatic Pilot-1 only :) With her Edu, she'd not going to be raising her Pilot skill either.
  3. Merchant, she'd be lucky to get past 4th Officer. Only service to offer Steward as a skill, though.
  4. Navy or Marines, she'd probably not get a commission. And she really needs a Str of 8 to wield a cutlass properly :)
  5. Other is a bit like an inferior version of Army for her.

I generally like Army, since I like lots of skills, but Scout is intriguing, as is Merchant. Not so keen on the others. A lot depends on whether we're likely to end up crewing our own ship.

Re: 9100 - OOC Discussion - Promotions

Folks, I had previously posted something in 1114 - Promotions about enlisted promotions.  That was a dim memory of my ancient military past.  Sorry, the standard rules only make provision for promotions after one achieves a commission.  Didn't mean to house-rule things there.  The offending text has been edited to be more in line with Book 1.

I've been rippin' and runnin' this weekend trying to get the gear up on this thingy, so it's not surprising to me that I have made some mistakes.

Theodore Balakov. I'll use the second set of scores I made earlier.

One roll was wasted on Gen, I'll use it as an enlistment roll.

Re: 9100 - OOC Discussion

With the addition of a sixth player, I have turned off the accepting players flag.  This ought to be enough people that I'm challenged but not overwhelmed.  Y'all get after it!  Create some characters.

Please don't forget to include a reason for each roll - it makes things easier to sort out.

Thanks to all for playing!

Private Language Groups:

I have private groups set up for the following languages:

Solomani
Aslani
Zhodani
Vargr
English
Chinese
Japanese
Russian
Spanish
Tagalog
French
Vilani

These languages are the ones most likely to occur in this game.  If anyone would like a particular language included, we still have plenty of private language groups (but I will be adding some for ship's communication channels later on...)

Re: 9100 - OOC Discussion

I don't want to set the cat amongst the pigeons, but in terms of what we want/expect from the game, I'd be more comfortable with a Mature rating.

That doesn't exclude anyone, and doesn't open the door to smut and gore, but it cuts us a bit of slack with the occasional faux pas.

For example, the Referee just pulled me up about abbreviating assault rifle... That's a bit eggshelly for me, I'll be a nervous wreck before we're finished. ;)

I can go with it, if that's where everyone wants to be, but I'd prefer not to need to go over my posts with a magnifier, in case I make a typo when my character shouts "Duck!"

How do the rest of you feel about the game rating?
