THE LEMURIA TRIALS AND THE END OF MODERN STATE

Aloisius Lemuria: doctor, renowned scientist and politician. The dictator of Lemuria employed his intellectual capabilities to rebuild Lemuria's Nationalist Party from its own ashes during the last twenty years under promises of future prosperity. To do so, nothing was unthinkable: Lemuria applied gene-splicing technologies, acquired through dubious agreements with the Argent Principality and redesigned by Lemuria's own genius. After the ascension of the Nationalist Party, in 1903, Aloisius became the rising star of Lemuria's political scene. In 1910, after the death of Lemuria's Prime Minister, Aloisius took over as Protector, promising to maintain order and sustain the Parliament during its time of crisis.

Six years later, Lemuria's many crimes were revealed to the world by the heroic efforts of F. Lee O'Malley - also known as Professor Flea. Aloisius was taken before the Constitutional Court of City Nouveau - the place of his arrest - but the trials had a dubious resolution. Six months after Lemuria's imprisonment, the Royal Court of the Lemurian States filed for the dictator's extradition. Hoping that the newfound democracy of Lemuria would condemn Aloisius according to legal procedures, the Court accepted lemurian jurisdiction over the case, sending Aloisius back home to meet with his right-wing supporters. In what became known by lemurians as the "One-night Revolution", Aloisius and his meta-human creations overtook the country, shutting down Parliament and establishing a dictatorship - with surprising degrees of approval amidst the locals.

This episode teaches us how our days meet the end of the Modern State - maybe even the end of democracy: Constitutional Courts become political theatres, bent on their share of dictatorship-forging and warmongering around the world, while the meta-human threat becomes an even more present commodity...

The scene was stolen straight from heroic poems: the four most prominent members of the Vanguard - the Mercurial Soldier, Avalon, Madame Sagesse and the Black Venus brought down the Sword of Çubuklu, aerial fortress that served as flagship for the turkish 10th Alpine Fleet. The multinational war effort changed the political scene as Mercurial, Nouveau City's resident hero, stepped up after Champion's tragic death a few months ago. Mercurial insists that this is not an official decision from Nouveau's government. Still, the Central Powers have used Mercurial's participation in the war effort to force City Nouveau out of its neutral position. The independent city holds great strategic value, given its position and atlantean ties.
