Once the game starts, I leave it up to you guys whether you already knew each other or if you're strangers in a tavern. Did my best to leave a bit of wiggle room in my story intro for whatever original purpose your characters have for being in the town.

I've started going through the spells, and so far, I think the cantrips can stay largely as they are in vanilla. They're all either small damage effects that already have built-in scaling, or small utility effects that aren't game-breaking in a way that requires neutering for non-magic classes. My goal is to keep the spells as close to the original balance as possible for the given caster class, so this works perfectly. Should make things a bit less complicated for anyone who hasn't finished their character yet.

One quirk with cantrips that you may want to take into account is that by default they scale based on the character level, not caster level, so if you give them to a fighter without any modifications they become just as good as they are for a caster.

Someone just signed up as a ranger. Once they do their character page, we'll start. If the other guy decides to come back before I get another person signing up, we'll make room for him. If someone else signs up, and is active I'll boot him for that person. Hopefully I answered all the necessary questions, but if anyone has any lingering questions before we get started, and characters are fully "locked in" now's the time.

Dwarf Wizard, as in my bio lines. I might multi-class later depending on how the campaign goes. I've got nothing planned for this character mechanics-wise.

It could just be temporary due to the holidays, but I'm leaning more towards him being one of those who just disappear. I'd kick him after a week more of waiting, but that's just me.

The noble title he's offering is one I'm making up called a "par knight." it basically means a knight who's earned recognition through service, rather than inheriting it as a birthright. As theoretical citizens of this country, your characters are aware that's what he means. It doesn't come with a monthly stipend like some titles do, but just having a title of nobility at all can potentially open doors. If nothing else, it makes finding employment a lot easier.

Just for clarity, turn order is Paladria -> CR -> Xanthas -> Sundri -> CF's -> Jessica -> Trai Dun -> CW -> Mark

Just announce what you're doing at the start of every round, and I'll fit it in as best I can. If you're later in the turn order, and worried about the battlefield changing significantly, (for instance if you need to be precise about the aoe of a spell) you're welcome to hold off on announcing your actions until more people have taken their turn.

On an another note, is the round still going, and are we playing the last round? After our attacks, only the rogue should be the only one remaining with 4 HP. Sounds trivial enough to not to play this one, unless it wants to run, or you think it can still hurt us in a meaningful way.

Just in case you were curious, each of these base-line cultists is worth 25XP. Can't promise every cultist ever will all be worth that value, but for non-leveled baseline cultist npcs, 25 XP is the current standard. Also, in case you were wondering don't bother looking up any stats on monster guides or whatever, I'm 100% pulling the stats and values for these cultists out of my ass. :3 (I'm keeping it consistent by keeping records of their stats as we go so don't worry about that.)

This messes up with actions btw. Jessica and Trai already killed the archers, and Sundri is attacking them - but according to initiative, Trai will kill an already dead archer. A drawback of PBEM games...

Otherwise our situation is good, if the archers are dead I can attack the cultists and still heal Xanthas if he fails his saves without triggering attack of opportunity.

Unless there is a high possibility of someone getting attacked again and put right back down it is almost always better to get them up as soon as possible, so they can help with the remainder of the fight if nothing else.  Also keep in mind that failed death saves don't go away just because you get healed, they stick around between fights and make you considerably more vulnerable.

I did not mean that. All usage of spells and abilities should depend on the situation. A spell can be interrupted by a counterspell or forcing a willpower save, while force drinking a potion can not.

IRL please be noted only a conscious mind can drink, an unconscious one can only breath, so pouring something down the mouth will end up in his lungs. Remember when doing first aid.

Question: Is Xanthas getting up? It's there serious case of the flanking btw.

Huh, I thought Trai/Paladria were going ahead to take out the rangers, then the rest were going to come in after to attack the camp. 0.0

edit: just reread, and I'm wrong. Jessica said the people who stayed behind were going to wait to ambush the reinforcements and then no one said anything or acknowledged her statement. Still it seems to be what people are doing so I'll roll with it.

Also edit: clearly I should know better than to use the threat of an op gank squad to keep people from lingering because now everyone is lingering to fight the op gank squad

Re: OOC Thread
I think we need to actually solidify our plan before moving forwards, lest we wind up in this situation in another month... So, here's how things stand:

Paladria and Trai are at the cultist camp.

Jessica, Mark, Sundri, and Xanthas are just outside of the hidden tunnel area.

Two cultist messengers are walking away from the camp. Four-to-six cultists are in the camp itself. A 'OP Gank Squad' (GM's description) is headed for the hidden tunnel area.

At the moment, the plan seems to be for Paladria and Trai to hold their position and wait for us to handle the 'OP Gank Squad'. Not saying I recommend this course of action, but this seems to be what was decided on. Is everyone in agreement with this?

GM: How far away is the cultist camp from the hidden tunnel position?

I think this gank squad is just a patrol unit, so you'll be fine. The plan so far is mostly kill the scouts, then kill patrol group, take a short rest, then kill the guards, and possibly enter the camp and kill everyone who's a cultist.

At least that's what I'm getting from the plan.

Editor's Note: Forgot to add 'take a short rest' in the middle, you should always take a short rest when going into a boss fight. No time for a long rest though, we need to be swift in our mission.

pass a stealth check to reposition, and don't move through their sight line. If you fail though, you lose your part of the surprise opportunity. The cultists are all looking forward. (south) For Divine Smite, I'm gonna say that you get 1 charge per 2 levels, and the damage bonus is increased by expending extra charges. (as opposed to using higher level spell slots)

I only know of one sleep spell, and it always targets the non immune targets with the lowest current HP first, going up until it runs out.

So assuming we are starting with the dragon breath plan which ones the spell targets will change based on how much damage each one takes, but probably still start with the wizard and clerics.

Climbing doesn't change advantage with ranged weapons, if you want to use a rock or tree you should hide behind it as anything hidden has advantage against its targets until detected.

Wow, tough crowd.

Anyway, there are insanely lot of them. I'm out of firebreath, but I still have a divine smite and lay on hands. Still, there is about 20 of them at least, so some of us might now survive, or even none of us at all. If we hit them now, I suggest we go from the south, either try to enter the southern tent, or start with an arrow volley (since we have about twice the move range with bows), and then get into position.

Sry, I remembered that wrong. 2 hours is the correct number. If I ever say something that doesnt jive with the documentation, trust the documentation. I'm having an idea. If the so-called prisoners are in a different tent from the others, then Xanthas could try to free them while the rest of us take their attention (unless "hey, they are trying to take our attention, let's check the prisoners"), and with that, you could also go along the set tents on fire plan. Altough, probably everyone will just leave without a HP lost.

We should also wait for a short rest, if I'm not mistaken, it's still not noon yet?

I still don't even know what are you playing. I could deduct it to wizard or sorcerer by the spells you used, but I didn't see any feat or ability that is unique to a race. Re: OOC Thread
You only need the individual rolls, ignore the sum. You only need to do the process once, and no stat should be above base 20 at character creation. Roll 7 20-sided die, take the individual rolls, and ignore the lowest one. Those 6 numbers are your stats, you can put each number into one stat. Bards primarily use charisma, so I reccomend putting the highest number you roll into that, but ultimately it's your call which number goes where :)

Re: OOC Thread
In reply to Ray Lyrefingers (msg # 350):

start at level 1. I don't know how familiar you are with D&D so I'm going to explain the stat system now. Each stat affects an array of different actions, and reactions through the modifier it adds to rolls. The way you calculate the modifier is based on how far above or below 10 your stat is. Each 2 points above 10 adds 1 point to the modifier.
This brings us to your hp. Your starting hp as a bard is 8 + your constitution modifier. Let's say you used one of those 14s as your constitution stat. That would put you 4 points above 10, which means your constitution modifier would be 2. So 8 + 2 would be 10 starting hp.
lets say you used the 3 for your constitution. the number rounds down, making it effectively a 2. That means you would be 8 points below 10, making the modifier -4. If you then applied that to your hp, it would be 8-4 = 4 so you would have 4 hp.

Hope that helps. For what it's worth, I recommend using one of the 18s for charisma, and the other for dexterity, which will help you avoid damage. Dump the 3 into wisdom. I'm not going to enforce any kind of stat-based roleplaying on you, and it's probably the least bad option under the circumstances. (anyone else is welcome to chime in here, I'm not a rules lawyer, and not a bard player, so there might be a legitimate reason not to take crappy wisdom as a bard that I don't know about)

my bad, didn't see the tile number in there, updating now. Also, for what it's worth, the archers didn't notice your attack because the damage was so low,and thus they ran off toward paladria's scream.
Technically, the enemy hasn't noticed you yet and isn't engaged. Since initiative hasn't come into play yet, you can retreat if you want. Bear with me as far as things being a bit chaotic, the two of them ditching at the same time has me scrambling to keep everything balanced, and the story cohesive.

If Perception is a big thing, I'd rather dump Strength stat instead of Wisdom. Is that alright GM, or are there mechanics that rely on strength? I also would be using my rapier and other finesse weapons.

Also, what's the sitch on starting equipment? If it's already in a thread, please direct me to it. Also, if starting equipment is allowed, can I sell some unwanted stuff to buy other needed mundane weapons?

Retreating would be a logical option, as would having a short rest earlier, but I'm not sure if I want to be that smart (I will roll an intelligence check), but from story cohesion point of view, we already lost our element of surprise, as well as a lot of time. The siege must be going on for like 10 minutes, right?

The addition of a gnome made me think how stupid we look like now, so I made a size comparison between Vi, Trai and Mark, added a kobold, the smallest humanoid I could think of.

I'm actually 180 cm high, so pretty average for a human (well, XX. century human), and the top of my head would be about the shoulder or Trai. Just so you note, Trai is actually not that high, but Vi is that short.

Re: OOC Thread
Strictly speaking, anyone carrying Vi would use the "Grappling" rules since she's a creature and not an object.  That raises it's own issues, however, as those rules are what's used for moving around an unconscious creature, but there's not really any ruling as far as I know for moving around a conscious and willing creature.

With the Grappling rules-as-written, it would mean that anyone picking Vi up - despite being a massive powerhouse of a Dragonborn, for example - would instantly have their speed dropped by half purely on the merit of carrying her.  Which doesn't make a lick of sense since she isn't any heavier or more unwieldy than any other gear the everyday adventurer totes around with ease like tents or hunting traps.  It's one thing if the creature is unwilling and thus resisting being dragged around, but not if they're allowing themselves to be hoisted and carried.  In my own games I've run, I've always treated someone toting around a willing creature who's weight is safely within their encumbrance limit as not having any drop in speed, but having disadvantage on Acrobatics checks in the meantime.

The grappling rules are only for resisting things, which are hard to manage.  If you just jump in a bag and have the bag picked up you just make the bag heavier until you exit the bag.

Is that written anywhere?  I'm not arguing against it, but would like to know for future reference.  I've only ever been able to find Sage Advice listings for things like dragging around unconscious creatures (who strictly speaking aren't resisting, but are just unwieldy because they're dead weight).  Saying that Vi simply adds basic weight to a bag is the most sensible and logical solution, absolutely, but I've just known too many rules lawyers who won't let something go if there's not content about it to reference.

Re: OOC Thread
If you use your hands to grab and drag a person making them unconscious doesn't make them easier to carry.  Most containers aren't strong enough to hold bigger creatures, but halflings and gnomes are easy, just drop them in a sack and you are good to go.

Much the same way as Giants put humans in a big leather sack and carry them around.  In theory that harness thing does the same job, but with a better view.

hey xanthas, considering where you're standing, even if you dashed, I don't think you can make it to the prisoner tent in a single movement. While you are still stealthed, now that there's a battle going on, for the sake of temporal continuity, you'll need to work within the turn order :)
If you dash, you can make it to the middle tent, or you can choose to take a different action, up to you. Please help me preserve the integrity of the space time continuum :3

Crap, in that case, it means I'm dead now. (Funny, I always roll so badly, and you roll max. twice in a row.) Essentially everyone can attack before I can use any skills.

Thing is, you use the combat turns very confusingly (badly...), as in the first turn, CB should've reacted earlier than me then. OK, we say narratively I attacked earlier, since it would make no sense CB escape before I could even attack - it would also mean he used a Disengage and a Mage Armour in the same turn. But right now, I'm not even shure what does the map show. The situation at the end of the first round? In that case it's the NPC-s turn right now. If they attack me, they need to do max. 4 damage before I could cast Lay on Hands. If they do more, I need to roll a death save in this round in my turn.

See, I'm not really getting where are we in the combat. At the end of the first round? Or the NPCs acted already, and I can give reactions for that?

Right now the map is current according to everything that's been posted. Also, you still have a chance to act this turn if you want to flee or something, since the surprise round is essentially a free turn, and you're last in the initiative order. You technically haven't acted yet this turn. My previous post about it being the 2nd turn forgot to factor that in

It was still turn 1. I'm sorry, I tried to explain earlier. You had a surprise round, and then because of the way that mechanic works, you get your regular action in the initiative order after the fact. I think some of the confusion here is because I had the wrong information earlier, and then changed things when I realized I was wrong. I'm sorry if that created confusion. For what it's worth, now that you've acted, it's turn 2. The newbies are welcome to jump in this turn as well

Re: OOC Thread
I'm still confused. Let's end this here: what does the map show currently? Round 2, turn of CB?

(Explanation: I did a move and shoot, [possibly surprise round], then round 1 CB ran away and cast Mage Armour, then I tried to hit him [if I understand well, this was retconned to: I tried to hit him, he ran away without disengage and cast Mage Armour], then the Cleric hit me [again, retcon. He hit me after I hit and CB ran away]. So we should be in the second round, and it's CB's turn at first and foremost, and I should be able to cast Lay on Hands at the start of round 2?)

Again, just to be sure: what round and turn does the battle map show, and who has used their turn already?

Players may blunder through dialog with shocking ineptitude, forget the name of the country they are in, or get confused about which side they are on, but once it comes time to roll for initiative they all turn into Sun Tzu.

In reply to Mark (msg # 402):

the guy you shot at didn't count because we had several people leave right after, and the guy you shot didn't notice (because you did -1 damage, and he ran off to chase the party members who left. I was trying to give everyone a chance to reevaluate since several people left, and several enemies also left) I posted an explanation of that, but I guess I wasn't clear enough.
so, then you still had the element of surprise, which you used to attack the cultist boss. Once you did that, we entered the regular initiative order. The cultist boss is first in the initiative order, which is why he reacted first. You're last in the initiative order which is why everyone acted before you did in turn 1. So, now that you've acted, we've started turn 2.
The map shows the beginning of turn 2. It's completely current with everything that's happened.

No, I actually wanted a Long Bow, just ran out of money at character creation. Mark always had a short bow (check the description).

The usage of bows was to have a ranged attack - most thrown weapons are to like 20 feet and don't have much damage, I might as well as attack melee from that distance. It's also for cases, if I can't get close enough - like the enemy is on the other side of a chasm, or just simply on a different level, like on a wall. It might not damage much, but could be useful, since the only ranged attack I can have is from the cards.

Re: OOC Thread
Puns aside the Hand Axe is a very good weapon for its level of portability, also Javelins have a lot more range than most maps ever tend to need, giving you the ability to fight when confined by the situation without needing to over extend yourself.  And you can have dozens of them for the cost of either hand axes or a longbow.

AOE fire spells are infinite, but those aren't particularly powerful so you may need to wait a bit for it to have the desired effect.

Re: OOC Thread
Continued my tally, it's at 6,5 in 18 tries. I added half for the successful attack for the -1 damage. I'm at a perfect 33% success rate.

Re: OOC Thread
Just checking to make sure you factored advantage into your attack roll. I'm guessing you did since it had a +5 mod on the attack, but worth making sure. The cleric got marked by faerie fire, so any attack roll against him has advantage.

Hi everyone, I'll process what I can of the turn sometime today, but fair warning that I'll be out of commission the next few days due to a surgery I'm getting tomorrow

Re: OOC Thread
Hi guys, sorry for the long delay. It's been a miserable time, and I was high on vicodin for a lot of it, so I just didn't have the wherewithal to run the game. I'm back now though, so looking forward to jumping back into it. Unfortunately, we lost Ray. Does anyone have any opinions about whether I should seek out a replacement, or would you rather run with the group we have for now?

Re: OOC Thread
RPOL turnover is so fast you may as well just always have one character on the wait list.

Re: OOC Thread
fair enough. I think I'll keep it as is for now, and I'll recruit again if we lose more people.
