If you're new to the game, have mechanical questions, or just need help designing your character, this is the place to ask. Different from the other questions thread because that's more geared toward questions about the homebrew system, not about D&D mechanics.

Creating Spell Cards
Just to double check - there are no skill checks or tool items involved in the crafting of spell cards?  It's just something a magically-aligned character can do innately in some manner as determined on their class without any additional items?  Where does money come into play in the creation process?

Caster Classes with Free Starting Cards
Starting a New Character thread:
For caster classes, any card that would count as part of your starting spell list is free. No need to worry about paying for those. Anything extra beyond that, though, is the price I just listed.

To make sure I'm understanding this correctly, it means that the starting spells a caster begins play with are cards they automatically have on hand?  Not that they simply have a free deck of all potential spells they qualify for (ie, a Bard would begin play with 2 free Cantrips because that's how many they know to begin with, not that they begin play with the 12 possible Cantrips their class could pick from).

On a similar note, does this apply to Bards and Sorcerers who do not use Spell Cards to cast their magic?  I'm playing a Sorcerer with 4 Cantrips and 3 1st Level Spells (2 based on level, 1 as a Class-based Bonus Spell).  Do I begin play with Spell Cards of those even though I don't need them myself?

In reply to Violatollia Ellywick Bismarra Den Garrick (msg # 2):

While you don't need special tools, you do need a set of materials to make the spell card. The materials are consumed upon creating the card, hence the gold cost.

So, the idea is that as a level 1 wizard/cleric/whatever, at some point prior to the start of the story you already purchased/created/stole the cards in question. This is because expecting a caster character to start off with no spells would be obnoxious, and unfun.

It doesn't really apply to a bard or sorcerer. Sorcerer power is innate, and bards use their instruments to generate magical effects.

So it's basically like how when a Wizard copies spells into their spellbook, they have to buy fluff stuff like "miscellaneous scribe equipment, high quality parchment, and special ink" then?  Cool, I can roll with that.

Thanks for the confirmation.

DM, I'm sorry, but could I try one more go at the stats? 3 is too little for me to put anywhere without becoming super weak.

It might be easier to just bump that 3 to a default of 10/+0 to set it at totally average.  What do you say on that notion, DM?

I second that notion. Tabaxi claws are dependent on strength, so 1d4-4 means its totally useless in a fight, which I would like for it to be.

that's fine. go for it.
edit: I mean rerolling is fine. I feel like having some flaws makes for more fun, but agreed that a 3 is a bit much

I'm ready with my sheet DM. Unless of course, maybe you could bump up the 3 to a 6? Cos I got 2 3s in that roll, so 6 would be much less of a handicap
