Keep in mind this will be a joint effort between both of us to develop your back story so if there is something you want to change, feel free to mold it to what you want. The point of the Zero day story is to work on your back story and also go through some of the settings.

Clara walked the streets of Amsterdam while trying to make her way towards a meetings that she had set with one of her old co-workers. As you are walking down a cobble stone street while you are passing all manner of people.

Off to the side of your vision you notice a man resting his shoulder against a dark alley wall. The sun from the day sky illuminates very little of the man making it hard to see but yet you still have the feeling he is watching you.

Amsterdam was such a mixed bag. On one hand, beautiful architecture, liberal attitudes and easy access to anything you might want. On the other, the omnipresent smell of weed, rains, and sketchy folk. Like the sketchy person that Clara was certain was spying on her.

Wishing Holland didn't have such strict weapon laws, and that she was any good at fighting, Clara pulled her scarf higher up the face and watched the watchman out of the corner of her eye. She's always been good at empathy, and getting a good read on the guy would determine further course of action.

Watching him the man doesn't seem to make very much movement. He just stares at you while you continue walking to your appointment. As you go out of sight of the man, you notice that he does not appear to follow you and so continue on your appoint with the co-worker.

As you travel the cobble stone streets you make your way to a small outside cafe which your co-worker is outside waiting for you. She waves as you get closer to her and you both met with a traditional hug and greeting.

It doesn't take you two long to look past your friend and notice that the same man you saw earlier has now appeared behind your friend. He takes a seat and begins making small talk with the waiter.

What is this co-workers name?

Clara waves to Fay, her buddy from the student times. A nice Dutch gal with impecable makeup skills and impressive drinking ability.

Getting somewhat unnerved by her apparent stalker, Clara does her best to keep a neutral face as she sits down and orders coffee and cheesecake. She then leans over to Fay and whispers: "Hey, look discretely behind you. Guy in the blue overcoat. Does he look shady to you? I feel like he's been following me, but maybe I'm just paranoid."

Fay looks briefly confused before catching a glance at the man before quickly turning around. In the chair you both notice that the man seems heavily covered from head to toe. Sunglasses hide his eyes, gloves hide his hands and something about him is off.

Fay gives a giggle and laughs at you, "You flirt! Everywhere you go men are always noticing you. What makes you think this guy is any different?"

Fay gives you a submissive wink and before looking over what the cafe offers and almost instantly forgetting about the man. While you continue to watch him you notice that he makes no real moves to get up, nor talk to anyone. People come to the table but his fixation appears to be on a piece of paper in-front of him.

Clara rolls her eyes at Fay. Of course Fay wouldn't think it's weird for strange men to shadow you. If he was indeed shadowing her. And what was with the Invisible Man getup? "The kind of men worth talking to aren't the ones that creepily follow you around."

"Ah, screw it. Who dares - wins. Right? At least this is a public place."

Psyching herself up Clara got up and walked over to the stranger, curiosity driving her to take a look at his paper as she approached. "Hey man. Sorry to interupt, but I feel like you've been following me for a while. Do you want something?" "Polite, but firm."

Fay watches as you get up and walk over. She giggles a little but can tell you are annoyed by the stranger watching you.

When you reach his table he seems Stoic and unnerving. He reaches of his sunglasses and lowers them just a bit to get a better view of you. In his eyes you see a glint of something but you can't place your finger as to what. He quickly puts them back on and continues reading his paper.

Without even looking at you he says, "You my dear are in a bit of trouble. You see you are marked. I've been following you but the best I can do is warn you. Take this card, you'll need it. When your trouble does come and I promise, it will; use the card. Don't use it until it happens otherwise you risk the chance of a very sad fate."

The man hands over a card which fits in the palm of your hand. You look down to read it and there is an address but nothing more. The ink or whatever they used appears almost blood-like in the way it's written. The paper is self is almost a scroll-like in the consistency.

While you are admiring the paper and trying to figure out just what to do. The man begins to get up and leave.

The man throws a glace a Clara.

"You will know what it means soon enough. I wish I could tell you more. But I have already put us in more danger than you can image."

The man turns back around and continues walking towards a crowd of people. You think briefly about giving chase but when you look up again after quickly glancing at the card, he is gone or has faded in with the crowd.

"Oh man. What the hell is this..."

Distracted, Clara pocketed the card and went back to Fae. Apologizing for the incident, she barely maintained the conversation thinking what to do next. Go to the police? With what, a vague threat? That wouldn't do anything. And the Invisible Man (Clara decided to keep calling him that) said she was "marked". Marked how?

After the deliberation she came to a two-point plan:
One, google the address and identify what's there.
Two, go ask the local Knights about the card. That was her only lead for now, and the paper and printing were both weird enough for it to be plausible to track to its source.
Extra, be vigilant in case the threat is real.

Fay some what falls out of Clara's mind as she continues causal conversation.

"Oh really.."

Long draw of Fay babbling about her life and what she is telling many of her boyfriends.

A quick search on Google Maps brings up what appears to be an older run down house that's far outside of the city limits. It's much more on the rural countryside than the more modern city side. The house itself upon street view inspection gives no signs of having anything special other than the fact that is looks abandoned.

"And then I said....hey Clara...you okay?" Fay looks at you, "Is something wrong?"

"Hunting you?" Fay looks puzzled by the question as if trying to work it out in her mind.

"He is probably just a wacko. It's not uncommon in this city to run into one of those. I wouldn't even worry about it."

Clara gave a subtle sigh, but couldn't let the thought go.

Once chatting and the later work conversation with Fay was over, Clara left the cafe to visit Abraham Ezra, a Knight and a small bookstore owner who might know who'd sell paper for anything like this card.

Clara leaves her meeting with Fay and goes to Nevermore Used Books. When she enters the store seems like someone opened a brand new book and slammed it into your nose. Around the counter is a Abraham cleaning off one of his old books.

I didn't know his relationship with you so i figured that you two have probably had conversations before.

The rather antique looking man looks up from his book cleaning with a smile.

"Ah Ms. Clara. How are you today? What do you seek to learn?" the man says in a thick accent that you have still yet to pin point.

A quick SMS about being sick, and Clara was free from work obligations for the day. Lost in thought, she walked across the city, taking a small diversion to buy a bottle of whiskey - asking for favors with empty hands was impolite. Eventually she reached the occluded book store she was seeking. A silver bell tingled welcoming the guest.

Clara ran her fingers across the spines of new, unread books covering the shelves. The desire to drop everything, buy some beer and hunker down was strong, but alas, adults had to have will and moderation. She turned and smiled as the owner approached her.

"Ah Mr. Abraham. Long time no see. Oh, I'm not so well, but I don't want to complain. How are you? Kids treating you well? Here, that's for you." - Clara passed Abraham the bottle. "Should help the next time they are giving you a headache, eh?"

After small talk was over, Clara face turned grim and serious, as she moved on to the real issue.

"I think I'm in a spot of trouble Abraham. Some weirdo was following me today, and when I confronted him, said that I am marked and in for a 'sad fate'. Gave me this strange little card - apparently 'using' it at the right time would help me. I'd have dismissed it as one of those new cult recruiters that are everywhere in the city these days, but have you ever heard of a cult that recruits through this sort of intimidation? Me neither.

But what I noticed is that the materials of the card are pretty unusual. Not like it's your normal A4 paper, or even cardboard Bateman* might salivate about. So I figured I'd drop by, see if you know something or can point me in the right direction."

Abraham smiles at Clara's gift.

"Why thank you Ms. Clara."

He listens closely as you explain your story to him before getting a worried look on his face. Mostly from the implications of the word cult which you are familiar Abraham likes to stay far away from. His religion is important to him.

"This is very distributing news indeed Ms.Clara." he reaches over and takes a look at the materials of the card with a puzzled look on his face.

He walks down the counter and you follow promptly as he makes his way to a table with a very big light and magnifying glass of some sort. Probably used to identify certain marks on books that are very old. After a few minutes he turns to you with card in hand, you can tell he is still working things through his mind.

"You say you got this today? Ms. Clara that is impossible. This paper is ancient, yet unlike anything else I've seen. It has hardly aged and yet I can tell it is not the common paper you would find in a book or anything close. It's more like a scroll and yet it's very tough as if it's been weathered through the ages. I wish I could be of more help. Maybe someone was playing a trick on you?"

Abraham hands the card back to you but you can tell he is a bit puzzled by the piece.

OOC: As a small note. When I mark something with bold and italics that is meant to give the impression that is an Aspect of that person, place or thing. So in this case one of Abraham's aspects is "His religion is important to him".

Clara rubs her forehead in annoyance.
"I sure hope so. But couldn't someone have made a paper by old technology? This shouldn't be impossible, right?"

OOC: Noted.
Another thing, I've been thinking more about my trouble aspect and its possible manifestations. One of the things that can be happening is Clara warping into different timelines/parallel worlds. Everything is as it was, but not quite. A shop isn't where Clara remembers it being. Someone brings up a conversation Clara doesn't remember having. Keys no longer matching the home lock. Fae's name now being Fay. Things like that. Alterations which are slight, so as not to affect the other players, but unnerving and troublesome.

Abraham also shakes his head.

"I don't believe so. Here come take a look over here."

Abraham brings you to the contraption which is obviously a high powered magnifying glass and underneath is the card which he takes back. Looking underneath the glass you can see every strained that appears to be hand sewed together.

"You see this pattern? This is paper which was created by hand. There isn't a technology that I know of that would make this. If you look even closer you can see imperfections which let's me know." He points to an area on the card.

The weave of the pattern is off on certain parts of the card showing a lack of attention to detail but leads to no real clues other than someone who obviously was very bored during the process.

"I can't be 100% sure of the method they used but it appears ancient in nature. Someone went through a lot of trouble to make this and give it to you. What's the address mean?"

"Hmm..." Clara rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "Well, you are the expert. Though where it could have come from then... There are some Egyptian and Hermetic preservation rituals meant for the dead, but who'd use them on a piece of paper? And I didn't think they really work anyway."

Clara's fingers ran gently on the card, soft fingertips tracing the network of strands and knots. "Curioser and curioser", as Carroll once wrote.

"Honestly - I don't know what the address means. Based on what the Invisible Man told me, it'd be some sort of haven for when I'm in danger. That's the best case scenario. Worst case scenario - it is the danger."

With a sigh, Clara hid the card into one of the inner pockets of her red coat and offered Abraham a hug.

"Well, thank you very much for all you did to help me. I guess I'll be going now. Will just try to avoid trouble. Nothing to go to the police with, alas."

Abraham gives a gentle squeeze before letting you go.

"Be careful Ms. Clara. this doesn't seem the kind of thing that normal people would go through the trouble to do. You come back if you run into anymore trouble and I will try to help as best as I can."

As you head out the door, the tinker of the little bell rattles. Your mind made up you begin your walk to the local authorities in order to get answers not sure what you might find. The sun is still up in the sky by the day is resolving itself more quickly because of this mess you have lost track of time.

Still not too many blocks away and once again you come to an area of cobble stone roads and small businesses which bustle with people. You pass the alleyway and hear a familiar voice that draws the hairs back on your neck.

"You shouldn't have told him anything. Involving people will only get those around you killed it's not wise and for the record, I'm not the enemy."

The man in the trench coat is standing there in front of you, leaning against the alley wall.

OOC: I was saying that Clara isn't going to the police because she's got nothing of substance to say. And because it's a horror story.
But I don't think this changes anything as far as your post goes.

Free for the rest of the day, Clara went off to roam the streets and get in touch with the spirit of the city. Asphalt and stone switched back and forth in incestuous interplay, their calmning chill seeping through the soles of Clara's shoes.

Until the journey has abruptly stopped.

" 'The best I can do is warn you' " Clara mockingly pantomimed. "Seems like you can do more now. Or what am I supposed to do, go about my day ignoring a death threat? Eeeeeveryone knows how death threats just make a girl's heart melt. And by the way, I didn't catch your name friendo."

Meanwhile, Clara's attention focused to a laser beam. She studied the man in front of her for any identifying signs. Cult tattoos. Badge. Label. Accent. Anything.

As the man catches your gaze and listens to you speak you notice he pays no mind to your words, rather seems more annoyed than anything. He motions for you to come into the alley closer out of sight. A part of you obviously is apprehensive but at the same time you want some answers.

The mans shape slowly fades into the darkish alley which has enough light that you don't trip and isn't very from away from the streets which have tons of people walking back and forth.

He waits inside the alley for you to follow him. The bloom a a cig lights in the alley as you see the sparks send reflections into his glasses.

"Your running out of time Clara and I am running out of patience." the man echoes from the alley.

There is a moment of shock where you want to ask more but at the same time you feel the man's honesty. Every question could possibly take away from your minutes to reach the shop and warn Abraham.

"It wasn't suppose to happen this way but maybe it's better that it did. Tick, tock Clara."

Day Zero: Clara Zykova
Clara froze, trying to process the... person(?) standing before her. They wore what seemed like a dark purple poncho over a sleeveless vest, pants and heavy boots, all clothes decorated with the golden patterns, like circuitry or some sort of stellar map. That was basically normal. The left arm was normal too - a muscular olive skinned arm with spidery fingers and heavy covering of arcane tattoos quite a few of which Clara could recognize. It was the rest that was giving Clara trouble. The stranger was a bizarre chimera, as if someone wanted to build a man but only had spare parts from multiple sets left. The right arm was a prosthetic, made of ivory and metal and far more animate than Clara thought was possible. And the head... It was completely bald, the top of the face hidden by what seemed like a bone mask, intricately carved with more occult symbols and fitted so tightly Clara could not see the gap between it and the person's skin. In the mask's sockets two blue eyes burned arrogantly. The bottom of the face, hairless and white-skinned, was criss-crossed with scars and burn marks - a scowling thin-lipped face that has seen more wear and worry than any face ought to in its life.

The figure bends down to the floor and you see him with his fingers trace symbols into the floor with his long finger nails that could pierce skin. The symbols briefly shine with a trace glow of red and then you begin to notice that all the windows and doors have a snake like pattern that form around them swiftly.

"We need to talk. Please join me inside the main book store rather than this dingy backroom."

He walks past you with no motion or intention other than the glace of moving forward.

Well... That was probably the second best option Clara could have expected, aside from him being an extremely confused customer who was just about to leave. After an extremely brief debate between fight, flight and negotiation, negotiation has won the decisive and bloodless victory.

"Alright. Lead the way - you seem to know your way around." The more she could bait out of the stranger - the better equipped she'd be. "Feel like telling me what you've been stalking me for?"

"You are very special to us."

The figure says without turning around.

"Your soul has a certain unique quality which draws us to you. You see most people who walk the earth are sheep." He turns around and starts grabbing a book off the shelf. "They take everything they see for face value but they don't understand that there is a different world out there. A more dangerous world. We are the creatures that find solace in our existence by living in the shadows and feeding off this world."

Your brain tries to comprehend what he is saying but clearly he has stated that it is not human.

"Ah, of course, the good old allegory of the cave. Everyone is sheeple but the select few philosopher-kings." Clara blurted out. The rude sarcasm was a coping mechanism. Reconceptualizing the stranger as an elitist made him easier to deal with. More normal. "So there's a dangerous world out there where cloaked strangers stalk innocent girls. What am I supposed to do about it?" She watched the stranger warily, even if his book-fondling was inoccuous.

The stranger smiles an evil grin that gives you a shiver down your spine.

"You should make a deal with me. The deal is simple, allow me to mark you without a fight and you can go about your life. You will experience strange things as your life continues to experience your soul corrupt but you will live longer by accepting rather than denying me. Or you can deny me and, I kill your friend and then come back to finish you off."

The best gives a shrug as to make your choice.

"Riiiight. All you need is the bloody signature under the contract and then we are best of pals. Sonds amazing friendo." Clara's tone made it clear that this did not sound amazing. "Why would I do this though? What's in it for me? If you just wanted to kill or kidnap me - you wouldn't be bargaining." 'Please let Abrahm be safe.' Clara thought. The book peddler escaped through the window, he must be safe.

"Ohhh excellent question friendo."

The stranger claps its hands together as if to mock praying.

"Well first, I would desemboil your friend. He is of very little use to me. Second, I would simply rip the flesh from your pretty little bones. So girl, what say you? I grow tired of these human endeavors."

The stranger slams a book back into the book case knocking dirt and dust off the books which linger in the air like fine particles. Up above you notice that there is a shelf that seems too heavy to hold the load of books.

OOC: I just introduced a situational aspect into play. These are aspects of the situation which lead themselves for use just like one of your aspects you picked in the beginning. Unlike your normal aspects they do not require FATE Points to use, you simply include them in your reply and +2 to your roll. More may become available as you continue your conversation.

"Right. Sounds like an amazing deal."
As the stranger slammed the shelf, Clara's rusty primprodial reflexes fired. Spinning into action she pushed the shelf onto the stranger, relying on its shaky weight distribution more than her own power. Immediately after - she ran, blindly, wanting to just get away.
It wasn't that Clara was against peering past the veil and delving into the unknown per se... In fact the opportunity was quite tempting. But not like this. She wanted to go on her own terms, or at least be dragged in kicking and screaming. Good things didn't happen to those who meekly followed mystagogues - those roads led to sacrificial altars more often than to the enlightenment.

21:20, Today: Clara Zykova rolled 0(+3) using 4 Fudge dice ((-1, 1, 1, -1)).
OOC: You introduce an aspect like that into the situation, who am I to say no? :D

The books fall on the creature slamming down on it with a loud thud. There is an agonogy of cries that come from the thing as the weight of the books press down on its body. The dust from the old books is blinding creating a cloud that blocks view.

After the last book has fallen you can still hear the creature stur underneath. It's anger growing with each moment that you ran. You make your way to the door but a red crackle of energy blocks you that slams against you.

Beyond the door you can see Abraham on the other side looking bewildered by the magic. Every few seconds the red energy sparks as if something is breaking it.

OOC: Welcome to your first real fight. The energy itself is an obstacle which is blocking your path. There are many different types of obstacles, some can even be enemies. In order to beat this obstacle and escape safely, you'll need to use your wits and a little help from a friend.

Fate Points. You now have all of your Fate Points and remember you are free to make up stunts and aspects that could help you escape. Key point is to remember that these stunts and aspects are normal, these are NOT your super-natural gifts as that has not taken place yet.

What the hell was happening. Clara felt like she was going crazy - stalked by one stranger the whole day, then hunted down by another, even stranger stranger, and now this... This couldn't be real. But with Abraham here, Clara could not afford to act as if it wasn't. "Damn you, Abraham, why are you still here?! I told you to run!"

So, let's assume this was magic. Clara knew magic. She grew up consuming tome after densely written tome of ancient warlocks, taoists and communists. Given the sparks of recognition with this warlock's tattoos - something she knew must have been right. What though? The field blocking Clara's escape must have been a ward - that's what those were called. And judging by its strained, sputtering flashes - something was interfering with it. Not exactly a well founded theory, but it was the best Clara had. So the question was - what was interfering.

"Abe, tell me everything that's touching the door and is part of the door on your side! Absolutely everything you see! Just trust me, please!" On her side, Clara did the same, studying the door and its surroundings in finest detail as hurriedly as she could.

OOC: 21:03, Today: Clara Zykova rolled 0(+4skill+2invoke) using 4 Fudge dice ((1, -1, 0, 0)).
And I will invoke "red energy sparks" for an extra +2, as its these disruptions that make Clara suspicious.

Nothing on her side looked good. The door knob was cheap plastic, and the rest of the door was barren. Clara prayed that something Abraham sees will set her mind ablaze.

OOC: So with a +4 skill and the invoke that gives you a +6 which is more than enough to beat the roll.

IC: The door energies shake as Clara tries to find a weak point in the energies. When Abe grabs the other handle you find that the energy does manage to weaken for a split second which throws the energy surrounding the door off.

It breaks and a wave of energy knocks you back a few feet from the door itself. You are not hurt but Abraham is laid out on his butt on the other side, still he appears shocked.

You manage to get up, the dust still blocking your view of the creature and you begin to the run to the door. Just as you start a hand grabs your arm and you feel and intense heat radiate around the area before you yank it back from the creature.

It appears wounded and winded from the books that feel on it as it watches you run out the door.

Abe gets up and runs with you down the street. He looks back huffing and puffing once you are in a more open area that has tons of people.

"Ms. Clara what was that? I'm so confused."

Your arm beings to tingle a bit and you can see that the marks from the hands of the creature are deeply marked on your arm.

"Ms. Clara that looks bad. We have to get you to a hospital."

Day Zero: Clara Zykova
Sweating and winded, Clara hunched over, her hands on her knees, trying to recover. It was a long, stressful day, and now the fatigue was catching up with her. The burning sensation from the stalker's imprint wasn't helping either.

"Yeah... Yeah. Thank you, Abraham. And sorry that I dragged trouble to your doorstep like that." The thoughts whorled in Clara's head, clashing and chaotic, but eventually she built up a picture. First things first - Abraham. "Abe, there's a police station nearby, yes? Can you go to them? Tell them there's been a break-in at your store, that you barely escaped with your life. They'll keep you safe. Can you do this for me? Please? I'll go to the hospital, it's okay, I'm not bleeding out here." This was a lie. Clara wasn't going to go to the hospital. The Invisible Man was right - there's been a hunter after her, and she was in danger. And apparently... magic was real. Clara couldn't rely on a hospital - hospitals have never been secure. She had a faint hope that police, with guns, would keep Abe safe. But she was willing to risk things, and put her trust into the Invisible Man. Maybe this safehouse of his would really be safe and have some sort of answers. Maybe it was all an elaborate trap. Whatever the case - the second Abe was gone, Clara was going to the address listed on the archaic paper in her pocket.

"Ms. Clare but what if that thing comes back?"

You pat Abe on his shoulder reassuring him without real words.

"Okay, Ms. Clare will do but you stay safe. I will come find you later on. Please make sure you get that looked at."

After spending a decent amount of time using Google maps and tracking down your mystery location you finally find the address. Dust has set in and the sun has slowly dipped in the sky. Rather than just rushing to the door you watch for a little while to see if you can see any movement taking place. After a short amount of time it isn't long before you realize that you don't see anyone leaving or going but there is movement inside of the house.

The house itself seems to be very out of the way from busy main streets. Homes are next to it in similar fashion but there is something that doesn't stand out about this location. It's more secluded even though the home itself is normal by regular standards.

Feet planted on the cooling asphalt, Clara deliberates what to do next, but... She didn't really have a choice. The attacked found her once, and there was no guarantee he wouldn't do it again. This was the only chance she knew of.

Clutching the thunderously beating heart in a metaphorical fist, Clara went up to the house to knock the door and enter.

The inside of the house appears to be warm but empty as soon as you walk in. The door opens without any hesitation and is left completely open. Inside you find yourself looking around trying to find any indication of people.

You come around the corner to the kitchen area which has the seats pulled out. A single candle is in the middle of the table.

"Why hello stranger." The mysterious man says without hardly looking at you. He looks at your arm. "Well, well. Fate has happened anyway. Looks like your marked now, that's both good and bad news."

From the shadows you see the man walk forward and there is a very familiar face in front of you. The same man from earlier who was following you is now in front of you and very much in the flesh.

"Hello again Clara."

The man has a smile on his face but he can quickly catch the fact that your expression is going to shift to anger.

He puts up one finger.

"Now before you get mad at me. I did tell you this would happen. It's our job to try to prepare you but we must not interfere with what happens."
