1.2 Family - Old and New (Abe)

Abe shook his head at his mother.  He wasn't paranoid - just careful.  Or so he told himself.  "Everything has been fine.  Now that I'm unbound, there's a chance I'll end up exposing myself to someone as Oberyn's son, or yours.  And I need to know we've got a storm cellar ready if that tornado starts spinning."

When Tom picked up, Abe said: "Hey Tom, I've got a bit of a curiosity.  If I drove slowly by wherever you are, could you tell me if the woman I'm with has anything... interesting... going on?"

"I'm not sure what unbound means," Cathryn says. "But if that is a problem, why not undo it?"

”I’d need to be close,” Tom says. ”Usually in the same room or building. I did feel that guy who turned out to kill a coupe of people recently, and that was on the street. Let me know when you’re coming by, and I can be outside.”

Abe winced at the suggestion from his mother.  "Unbound was having what the other Fae did to me when I was little removed, mom."  He struggled to find words to explain the wonder of magic.  "I can see magic, mom.  I can do magic.  ...  It would be like living your whole life deaf and blind, then seeing and hearing for a few days, then being asked to stab yourself in the eyes and ears until they were gone again.  Could I be re-bound?  I'm not sure - I don't know if it is even possible to bind me now that I'm mature?  Would I get myself re-bound?  Yes, if it's possible, but only as a very last resort - if that were my only option to keep you guys safe."

Abe asked for Tom's address and let him know when he was getting close.

You see understanding in your mother's eyes. "So that's what you call it," she says. "Even if I had hoped that would never have happened, I can't take that away from you."

"Yeah, hold on a second, man. Let me check Google maps."

After a few moments, Tom gives Abe the address of a cafe. "I'll be inside. Drive down the street, and I should be able to get a read."

Abe drove toward where Tom had indicated, and let him know when he was close.  If necessary he pulled into a parking space for a minute.

The address is in La Jolla and it takes you to a café.

Tom is seated at a table near one of the windows.

Trying to look inconspicuous, Tom sees Abe drive by in a car. He feels his friend’s laughter. Taking his phone out of his pocket, he calls Abe.

”I got nothing from the person you’re with, not even a faint sense like I get from the suits in the club. It feels like she’s perfectly mundane.”

"Thanks, Tom.  I owe you one.  Mind checking on one more tomorrow and a couple others some time in the next week?"  Abe asked as he pulled away from where Tom had been and started heading back toward the family home.

"Well, there's no exception to be gained there.  Jayne's coming in tomorrow, and I'd hinted at something important to her.  I'll see if she's got an exception and otherwise will have a friend help her forget about the whole thing.  Not really much for her to lose.  She'll wonder why she's out here though... mind helping me arrange a special afternoon for her tomorrow?"  He asked.  He really felt like a moocher, and he hated it.  Staying at Sparrow's place, borrowing his friends' abilities, and now his mom's expertise at throwing things together.  He hoped to get to paying people back soon.

"Thanks mom, and sorry for the trouble I'm causing."  Abe said, sincerely.  "So, I'll plan to bring the Swedish meatballs, then?"  He suggested as he drove back toward home.

Abe headed home to enjoy an evening of Babylon 5, with full intention of re-volunteering for swedish meatball duty within earshot of his dad.

[OOC: I'm good with wrapping up here and moving on to next day meeting Jayne.  If Tom and Dean don't mind being nearby at her arrival to a) screen her, and b) make her forget why she decided to come home if there's nothing supernatural about her, I'd appreciate it.]

1.2 Family - Old and New (Abe)

18 May 2019, past 8.00 AM, San Diego International Airport

Abe and Tom were waiting at arrivals for Abe's sister. The second person for Tom to read on Abe's behalf.

When you see her in the distance, she isn't alone. She is talking to some guy. Tanned and dark haired. As they come closer, you recognize him. It is Thomas, another San Diego student at Croatan University. The one that had texted and called both of you before your "accident" and all through the night and morning. And Abe had called him the morning after.

He is fit. Objectively speaking, he's a good looking guy. And whatever he just said, he made Jayne laugh as they approach you.

Jayne hugs Abe. "Hi, this is Thomas. He's from Croatan too."

Abe was surprised by Thomas's appearance.  He had seemed like a good guy.  But then he'd had a dream about the driving group dying and now he had shown up unannounced... and with Jayne.  He raised an eyebrow at Tom, asking if either had anything special about them.

He moved toward the duo, reaching out to hug Jayne, then shake Thomas's hand.  "Good to see you guys.  Jayne, Thomas, this is Tom.  Tom, this is Jayne, my sister, and Thomas, an NROTC man at Croatan.  He's the one you beat out for the last driving spot when I drew names randombly between all the good applicants."

To Jayne he commented, "We'll never get lost with these two around."  Referencing the GPS company.

Giving Thomas a what's up head tilt and smiling, Tom says, "Hey, Thomas. Sorry about not getting back to you the other day." Thomas is a strange one. After Thomas's frantic texts and warnings, Tom half-expected Thomas to be some kind of supernatural being as well. Thomas does not seem to have any character flies whatsoever, good at everything, well-liked by everyone. If there was a real-life Mary Sue, it'd be Thomas.

When he gets a chance, he tells Abe quietly, "They seem normal to me."

Thomas shook hands with Abe. "Hi Abe," he says. "I didn't know Jayne was your sister. We got the seats next to each other on the plane."

"You know Abe," Jayne asks Thomas.

"He talked to the NROTC class about his experiences in country. And we were in the same history class, right?" Thomas looked at Abe for the final part of his comment.

Jayne chuckled at Abe's TomTom comment.

Thomas returned Tom's head tilt. "No worries Tom," he says. "Abe did get back to me. And everything turned out to be fine."

Jayne gave Thomas a strange look.

"I'll catch up with all of you later," he says. "It was nice meeting you," the last was directed to Jayne. "And you," she says. And he leaves.

"See ya, Thomas," Tom says, waving goodbye.

When Thomas is gone, Tom turns to Abe. "Coincidental, Thomas ending up next to Jayne on the flight, eh? And that dream or whatever he had." He rubs his chin. "I like him. I mean, everyone does. He's practically Captain America. But there's something about him, something I can't quite explain. I don't mean that in a Spidey sense kinda way, more of a Stan Lee lampshading moment."

Abe nodded to acknowledge Thomas's statement about NROTC and history class.

"How was the flight?"  He asked Jayne as Thomas departed and they headed for their own vehicle.

Later on, he agreed with Tom.  "Yeah, not sure what's going on there but he seems at least as odd to me as Daiyu did."

1.2 Family - Old and New (Abe)

Abe then remembered the other problem with Jayne coming in.  For his family it had been months of time for him to change, but for Jayne it would have been just a week.  He couldn't tell her an outright lie, both due to his general inability to do so and how well she knew him.  So, he went with not lying... but also not telling the full truth.  "I can't tell you that it was an experiment I volunteered for and that only qualified for because of my rather unusual genetics.  I also can't tell you who did it, but I can tell you that there are no foreseen negative side effects from it, though I may, unfortunately, have to suffer the attention of women due to my extreme prettiness."  He concluded with a smirk and a wink.

He thought a moment and looked around to make sure no one else was paying them any attention.  At least beyond what he was starting to get used to getting, or within earshot.  When sure he had privacy, he added with complete sincerity, "Seriously, though the NDA is super strict - far beyond even what it was when I was on deployment - so please don't poke into it.  I didn't know that we're half-siblings and you don't have the required genes and couldn't be a part of it when I called you, or I wouldn't have mentioned anything at all.  Hopefully, within the next couple of years I'll be able to speak a little more openly about it.  But or now, it's a no-go.  If you knew anymore than what I've said, we'd be better of if we'd committed actual treason because at least then there's due process.  It's been months since mom and dad have seen me, so I was able to pass off the change in appearance as lifestyle changes and reduced stress since I get to wrap up at night in my DD214 blanket."

"Right!"  Abe agreed.  "You'd think they'd have told us some point?"

Trying to lighten the mood a bit, he added, "Apparently dad is my dad but not my father.  Now I have to take responsibility for liking Babylon 5.  Can't blame genes anymore.  By the way, dad's on his annual kick."
