Cailin Weber

Cailin smiled when she noticed Alicia's behaviour, happy to have managed to get the younger girl to stop brooding. At least she had achieved something good today, and she was confident that Jorge wouldn't let her down.

In Joseph's room, she held back a grunt: teenager boys were both the easiest…and the hardest…to talk to. Easiest because they'd talk to pretty much any girl that took interest in them for whatever reason and she happened to be one of those. Hardest because they never wanted to be seen by those same girls in any situation where they weren't at their best. Which, in a hospital, wasn't often…

Thankfully, for now it was in the easiest part of things. She stepped inside, but didn't get too close this time. “Hi Joseph. I'm Cailin, one of the volunteers around here. I just wanted to introduce myself today and let you know that I was here if you wanted someone to talk to that wasn't a doctor, nurse or parent.”

"Hi Cailin, I'll talk to you any time," Joseph said and smiled at Cailin with what likely was supposed to be his best flirtatious smile. It wasn't very good. But his dark brown puppy like eyes would be dangerous when he was older. Eyes that were fixated on your face. Hands continuously manipulating the cube, solving it piece by piece.

"How often do you volunteer here?"

Cailin was just happy to see the smile, not really noticing its flirtatious quality. “I'm here every Friday after school. But the nurses have my number and can call me if there's something urgent.” Which happened from time to time. And it wasn't always for something bad, but most often when it did it was because one of the kids was taking a turn for the worse. Though there had been a few times when a kid had "just" freaked out and wanted to see her, now.

With a brief movement of her chin, she indicated the cube. “I never got the hang of that. Did you memorize all the positions before you started or are you following some kind of algorithm to solve it like that without looking?”

"A little bit of both," Joseph said. "The first third I just solve. For the rest there are a few algorithms I use to solve it. I'm not a speed solver by any means, but I get there. But in any case, you need to memorize where the pieces are before you start moving them and you need to know exactly how each algorithm changes the cube as a whole. Even the slightest mistake will mess it up spectacularly."

He then changed subjects.

"Yesterday I was supposed to pick up eight cans of Sprite, but I only picked 7 up."

“Makes sense I suppose.” Cailin snorted at the joke. It was pretty terrible as far as puns went, but the thought mattered much more than anything else. And it still managed to make her smile. Shaking her head, she answered. “You should talk with the NASA people, they can only get sprite ever since they stopped running the shuttles and can't get 7Up.”

That was at least as terrible as his own joke, but eh… In those sort of things, you did what you had to, right? “Anyway. Don't hesitate to go see and talk with the other kids when you can, you don't have to stay in your room all the time you know.”

Joseph laughed at your joke. "You're funny."

"I've talked to some of them already, but most of them are children." He stopped, though he was supposed to say something more. After a short pause, he continued. "But yeah, I can do that."

It was a good thing Joseph didn't need much to find someone funny, and not just because her follow-up had been less than stellar. Laughter would help him quite a bit on the road ahead, no matter why he was here.

The <i>others<i> were children… Yeah, right… “Maybe,” Cailin shrugged. “But a lot of them know things you don't. Some tips and tricks I'm sure you'd be glad to know.” She smiled teasingly: she wouldn't say much more than that. Alicia had needed the ice cream to get her moving, but she was betting that for Joseph curiosity would accomplish that much more effectively. He'd probably pretend to not be particularly interested by the ice cream in fact. And who knew, he might find more interesting things than that anyway.

“I'll leave you to it then,” Cailin waved, “and go see the children.” She winked with a smile then exited the room to get on with her tour and go see as many of the other kids as she could.

OOC -
We can go on with the tour or skip to the evening depending on how many kids you want to do of course :)

"Yes," Joseph said. "I will visit the children."

You completed your afternoon at the hospital.

Later.

You opened your eyes. You're not sure where you were or how you got there. You're standing on an expanse of pink marble. You saw some stairs and some arches of the same material, but there were only clouds where there should be walls. Above you there was no ceiling. There were only stars on a night sky. No city lights polluted the view. And you realized that you couldn't see any other sources of light either, but despite that you could see your surroundings as clearly as if you were in daylight.

There were no one else around, though you could hear distant footsteps. From somewhere. There was a faint scent of something. Something ephemeral and eternal at the same time. It wasn't cold or warm. Nor was the marble rough on your bare feet. How did you lose your socks and shoes?

Cailin looked around for a moment, stunned speechless. She wiggled her toes, trying to figure what had happened, but nothing coming to her she decided that the only explanation was that she was dreaming. Not only it would explain why she didn't know how she had ended there - wherever here was - but it would also explain the whole surreal scene. It felt a bit too real for a dream of course, but… Maybe that was how it was from inside, right? Or… Wait… Had she somehow taken some kind of drug? She had never touched those so she didn't see how that could have happened, but…

Shaking her head, the girl focused for a moment on the footsteps, trying to determine from where they came from. “Hello? Is there someone here?” she called without really expecting anyone to answer her, and in fact no really waiting for an answer she decided there was no use staying where she was so headed to the stairs.

Cailin called out as she headed towards the stairs. As she had expected, no one responded. The stairs didn't go far, seven wide steps that led to a platform, the far edge covered by clouds.

In the center of the platform was a pool. The bottom might be two feet lower than the floor she walked on. It was surrounded by a pink marble wall that might be a foot high and the water ended about six inches from the top. The diameter of the pool might have been three yards or so.

There was an image of the Earth in the pool surrounded by about a foot of water. As Cailin was absorbed by the study of the perfect image in the pool, bare feet came up the stairs. As you turned around, you saw someone wearing an impossibly white robe with a golden rim. The deep hood preventing every chance to see their face. Their hands were inserted in the wide sleeves, the arms crossing the torso at elbow level.

"Welcome to the Citadel," the male voice said.

Cailin watched the newcommer for a long time, nodding to acknowledge the greeting and reflexively wiggling her toes when she noticed the bare feet. She turned to the pool for a second or two, then back to the other person. Still, she didn't say anything for a while. Finally, when she did, she said, “I'm not so sure I want to know where I am… Or how I got there…”

With another look at the pool, and one at the sky, she added, “But… That wouldn't change anything, would it? So… What is the Citadel?” And who are you, she thought. Not that she would ask that question… yet.

The man lowered his hood and revealed his face.

"No Cailin it would not," he said. "You would still be dead and you would still be on the threshold to discover who you really are. And the Citadel is our part of Heaven."

That left Cailin shocked and speechless for a long moment, her face completely white. Her knees weak, she sat on the ground shackily. For a moment, she considered arguing that it was merely a dream, or that she had taken some kind of drug or something, but…

After who knew how long - she certainly didn't - the girl looked up. “A car I presume?” It was…well, not the only thing that made sense, but the most likely. Unless she didn't remember even more than she thought? Who knew how those things worked…

She forced herself to move past the shock to ask more. Though the way she asked her questions, it wasn't clear if she was really paying attention or just using them as a buffer. “Should I wait for you to explain, or should I ask all the questions that come to mind? Like… Why am I at a threshold and not one side or the other of it? What am I supposed to truly be and why haven't I discovered it yet? Or little details like whose part of Heaven? What are the other parts?” She paused and grimaced. “And uh… Whose Heaven? I'm not…” She waved her hand as if it explained her position on the matter to which she added in a mutter probably not intended to be heard.

"What do you remember," he asked when Cailin wondered about how she had died. "What would normally have happened after that?"

And then her questions continued. "Feel free to ask any questions that you have."

"You are here. At the beginning or the threshold. About to find out who you really are."

"You just died. Who you truly are doesn't manifest itself until you do. And what you are is an angel. A Guardian Angel. And the Citadel is where we, the Guardian Angels, live. There are many mansions in Heaven, but there is only one Heaven. God's Heaven."

“I left the hospital.” Cailin frowned. “Or at least I finished my round there?” Shaking her head, she continued. “After that, I'd just go back home for dinner. So… That's the only time I can think of where it could have happened.” Surely nothing would have happened in the hospital itself? And even if it had… Well, there was no better place to be to try to fix whatever had gone wrong, right?

The next bit completely floored her once again. “An Angel. A Guardian Angel. With the wings and the flaming sword and all that?” She turned her head over her shoulders, as if trying to reassure herself that there were in fact no wings. “I suppose I need to step over that threshold to get all that?”

She frowned, obviously deep in thoughts. “Wait… This threshold… Am I dead, dead, as in buried, cremated or whatever, or dead but with doctors trying to pull me back but I have a choice to make that will determine what happens exactly?”

"You are dead. Not buried, but quite dead. No physician would be able to revive you. The wings are metaphorical." His body transformed into a large number of small spheres of light that filled the space where his body had been. With a jingling sound the orbs traveled upwards a short distance before they vanished.

Five yards away another set of orbs of light appeared and traveled downwards with the same jingling sound until the orbs was replaced by the angel.

"That's what the wings represent. You can do that too, as soon as you learn how. And more!"

“Oh.” Cailin seemed to deflate. Not that she didn't seem interested about the display of light. Nor was she overly disappointed by the absence of wings. Alright, maybe a bit: wings were cool after all. That she was well and truly dead however…

She hugged her legs, burying her face in her knees. “So I'll never see my dad again? My friends? Or the kids?” She paused, looking around. Haltingly, clearly scared of the answer, she asked. “Is my mom here?”

“Confused and upset, but happy…” Despite what she said, the way it was said made it pretty clear that Cailin didn't really believe it was possible at all.

She simply sat there looking depressed for a moment, before, more to fill the silence than anything else, asking. “What am I supposed to do now? "Live" here? Learn to use those metaphorical wings and whatever else there is? To what end?”

"To serve. To protect. That is what Guardian Angels do. You need to learn how to use your powers first though. I'll help you with that. I'm Christopher by the way. One of the Elders of this community. We are the Council of Twelve, the leaders of the Citadel. And yes, this is your home now." He emphasized his words with all encompassing moves with his arms.

"This is only the hallway of course, there is more. And when you get your clients, you will spend time with them on Earth too."

“I suppose 'clients' is just a name and that there's no commerce implied.” Cailin considered asking how those clients were selected, and how assignments were decided, but she supposed she'd be told at some point. For now, she didn't really feel like asking any more questions.

She looked mournfully at the basin, then looked up. “My home, uh…” With a sigh, she stood up and brushed her butt - more as habit than anything else. “I suppose we might as well get started then. So, you're sort of an Archangel then?” She frowned. “By the way… Am I supposed to be religious or something? Because… I'm not.” She looked around with a grimace. “Which sounds pretty ironic given this place, uh…” In the end, it looked like she couldn't not ask questions…

"You are correct, there is no commerce implied. We could have called them protectee, but client is the current term."

"Let's say that the Council of Twelve is the Governor and the state legislature and they are the President and Congress. Fortunately there is very little federal oversight here. And you don't need to be religious to be here either. Everybody dies. And people like you come here."

I suppose we're not exactly friendly with those?”

“Anyway.” She shook her head. “Was I born as an angel-to-be? Speaking of which… Are there other types of angels than Guardian ones? What are the differences? Oh, does Cupid exist!?”

"There is an Underworld, yes. And demons. And you are correct, they are not our friends."

"You were born with the seed or potential of becoming a Guardian Angel and many do. But so far only few live up to their potential and are chosen to join us."

Cailin didn't seem particularly convinced she was all that much more caring or kind than many others. Since it wouldn't lead anywhere good though, she focused on the rest, noting that Christopher wasn't big on giving details. Maybe he believed in learning by doing or seeing more than listening. Which was unfortunate at the moment.

“So…” She pointed at the other side of the basin from which she had arrived. “That way?” She started to walk as she asked another questions. “What do Guardian Angels do exactly? Are there like… schools for fledgling angels?”
