1.3 Thank You For Not Screaming (Dean Flashback)
Over the short span of his unlife, had been operating from an ever expanding lost of rules and guidelines to help him survive his supernatural adolescence, and to theoretically grow into a productive and valuable member of their "Shadow" community.
First and foremost, keep your secrets. Dean had obeyed that completely, and had spent no small effort towards cutting himself away from his own life in order to protect the new. It had been among his earliest and most important goals.
Step two, fall in line. Dean had tried, with difficulty at times, to remain humble. He was a very small fish, in a very large pond, so deference and respect to his Elders was not only expected, it was vital to his continued well being. This had already paid off in a sense, as he had been assigned to Asali, a Vampire of some importance, and he had learned much in return for his compliance.
Then, his first real conundrum. Asali had said that it was more or less taboo to feed from other Vampires. That made sense, a society of predators and parasites cannot function if everyone views every else as a potential meal.
But, she had also tasked him with finding this kindred in particular, a member of his Clan, the Schimba "strain" of his kind. Those most gifted with the alteration of their physical forms. He had been told to learn from him.
So while he had breached that taboo, he had theoretically come away all the stronger. He had become proficient in an incredibly useful and fundamental art, one that Asali herself had referenced, that of changing into an animal, and that of flight. Would she praise him? Or had he erred in some way? Had his efforts south of the border been enough to truly end his old life?
Dean fluttered down in the early hours of the morning, his large leathery form landing in a patch of hard packed soil before he gradually grew, stretched, and assumed his human form. There he lingered a bit to get his legs under him, and to adjust to his human eyes, his human ears, and his hulking form before he took his bags and went to go seek out his Mentor, and to fill her in on all that had occured.
