Seymour enjoyed the sweet treats they had for lunch. He wasn't sure he would want to eat like that for every meal, but it was a nice change of pace for today. When the meal was done, however, Seymour thought he might want to stop back in town quick before heading into the wilderness. He thought it would be fun to experiment with different types of lures. As long as Jakey didn't object, he would do a quick search in town for some good binoculars, string, and small decomposable dishes he could set out food in. Then he would buy some whipped cream, blueberry pie filling, raw eggs, raw chicken, and canned mandarin oranges to go along with the syrup he had been given.

Once out in the wilderness, Seymour would find a good spot not far from where Jakey wanted to set up. Then find a tree with a good view in six separate directions. He would set out or string up his six different lures far enough away that he wasn't immediately next to them, but close enough that he could throw a pokemon in that direction without much hassle. He would then watch his lures from his tree, using his new binoculars to watch for any signs of movement (buggy or otherwise) in the surrounding trees, grasses, shrubs, or even the sky.

Seymour is testing lures of syrup, raw egg, raw chicken, whipped cream, blueberry pie filling, and canned mandarin oranges. He will stay within shouting distance of wherever Jakey wants to be, but not necessarily within eyesight of him.

Jake didn't mind perusing the stores, he kept his eye out for any deals -- especially for a snazzy fishing rod, but didn't take too much time as he was eager to get out into the woods. He did buy a couple snacks for himself though. He thought about eating the raisins given to him, but after eating the honeycomb, his sweet-tooth was more than satisfied.

In the woods, Jake had a different interpretation of luring pokemon than Seymour. Rather than setting up a semi-sophisticated system, Jake took to throwing some raisins on the ground and watching the area from afar. But it would only take a few minutes of idly watching before Jake would get bored of that tactic and just start wandering the woods. He could contact Seymour with his dex if he needed to.  That, and he had no reason to suspect team gaia was in this forest.

Seymour watches his various baits, but it's soon pretty obvious what the bugs want, as a few Scatterbug gather around the syrup, while a butterfly floats above them.

The other baits, however, don't seem to draw much attention so far.

Jake does find an old fishing rod for sale, and affordable enough for his wallet. He doesn't get much use out of his raisins though, and just walks around the river's bank in hope of seeing movement.

As luck has it, he does see a big bug moving in the river. It climbs a bit out of the water to stare at Jake.

"Wow! That is a beautiful pokemon..." Seymour muttered under his breath as he watched the butterfly flit about. The Scatterbugs were pretty cool too. He considered potentially catching a bunch to sell to the gym, same as Cary, but ultimately decided he would leave that line of work to the professionals. He decided to try for the just the butterfly instead.

He climbed down from his perch and got as close as he dared, then threw out Basher, his Roggenrola. He figured it would be good practice for his rocky pokemon even if they failed. He pointed up at the butterfly and announced his presence to the bugs. "You, the fluttering beauty! We challenge you to a battle! Basher, use your Rock Blast!"

Basher will use Rock Blast on the butterfly. Seymour's intent is to try and capture it.

Jake froze when he saw the new pokemon. Then slowly plodded towards it, lowering his body. Not for stealth though, but for making himself look smaller, less threatening. To ensure the bug knew he was there, he called out in a soft voice,
"Heey there little guy, you want some... uh raisins?"

Digging in his pocket, he really only had the raisins, but he figured having his hand out and open containing somewhat edible food was a good impression as any. Of course, Jake's other hand wrapped behind his back to grab a pokeball... one containing Manty. Jake didn't bring out Manty immediately, but wanted to be ready if the bug was unexpectedly hostile.

Basher starts firing just as Seymour shouts his challenge... unfortunately, he forgot to aim first. The butterfly takes that opening to give an ear-piercing scream, before firing a Psybeam and wounding Basher. That hit is enough to get Basher to focus though, and he hits the Vivillon with a stream of rocks, hurting it.

But before he can fire again, the Scatterbugs start getting in the way, protecting the butterfly...

The creature seems to sniff Jake's raisins, before scooping them under itself with it's segmented claws. It seems completely unafraid of the young trainer.

"Oh, so it's going to be like that?" Seymour was hoping for a one on one battle, but wasn't all that surprised when the Scatterbugs moved in to help protect the Vivillion. But if they were going to team up on him, he didn't feel all that bad about sending out another of his pokemon too. He threw out the pokeball containing his Laconney. "Locke, Powder Snow the entire cluster! Basher, keep trying to get at that Vivillon! Try a headbutt this time." The Roggenrola wasn't fast, but maybe he could power through to his target. Meanwhile, Seymour tried to move into a spot where he could throw a pokeball at the Vivillon without it being intercepted by a Scatterbug.

Basher is still trying to hit Vivillion, but with a headbutt attack. Laconney is blasting all the bugs with powder snow. Seymour is trying to throw a net ball at the Vivillon.

Locke does a great job scattering the Scatterbugs, leaving the path open for Basher. The Vivillon tries to heal itself with a Draining Kiss, but Basher resist and replies with a Headbutt, injuring the Vivillon further. Seymour tosses his pokéball, and holds his breath...

OOC: The capture check missed, but you can compensate either by spending 13 favors, or reducing your Net Ball bonus. Either way, your Pokeball will drop to Below Average, but you'll get a new Vivillon.

Jake relaxed when the pokemon seemed friendly. Reaching his hand to an empty pokeball, he set the pokeball down in front of the bug and fished the remainder of raisins from his pocket and set them adjacent to the pokeball. He was not sure if the bug understood the deal -- infinite food for captivity.  If the idea didn't come across, Jake would release a couple of his pokemon (skipper and roach) to show he was a good trainer.

Seymour held his breath as the pokeball he threw wobbled with anticipation. Would he catch it? would it break free?

The pokegods must have been smiling on Seymour today because the net ball eventually came to a rest. The Vivillon snuggly inside. "Woohoo!" he yelled, surly spooking away a couple extra nearby bugs.

I'll use the 13 favor points.

The creature looks at the pokéball, but doesn't seem to understand what it is. It taps it lightly (not hard enough to trigger the capture), then tries to pull it underneath it to taste it.

When Jake releases Skipper and Roach, the bug turns its eyes to look at them, and crawls closer to poke them with it's claws.

The Scatterbugs runs off as Seymour picks up his new companion.

Seymour smiled widely at the new friend in his hand, then returned his other buddies to their pokeballs. "Great work Basher. Locke. You both did good. Now, what should we name our new friend?..." Seymour contemplated different names even as he headed back to his lookout perch. Despite the recent excitement, he was still curious about what bugs his other lures might attract.

After sending Jakey a message letting him know about the Vivillon, he resumed watching the baits with his binoculars.

Jake tried to keep his pokemon calm as the pokemon poked them. It didn't seem hostile and he didn't want to make it hostile. While the pokemon was trying to play with his others, he used his pokedex to identify the pokemon.

After identifying it, he tried to do a switcheroo, moving the pokeball in front of where the bug was poking to try to get it to poke the button and capture it. Jake wasn't sure if it would work, but even if it didn't it would be funny!

Looking around, Seymour sees some of his bait seems to have been nibbled on, but he can only see one pokémon feeding at the moment: a nervous looking light brown owl pecking at the raw chicken.

Anorith, the Old Shrip pokemon.
Type: Rock/Bug
A Pokémon ancestor that was reanimated from a fossil. It lived in the sea and hunted with claws. Over time, its eight feet transformed into wings.

The fossil pokemon vanishes in a red flash, swallowed by the pokeball... Jake watches in anticipation... only for the ball to break open and free the creature. It seems capturing it will require tiring it out.

Curious, Seymour tried to look up the pokemon in his pokedex. He was always up for adding a pokemon of any type to his team, despite being out searching for bugs. However, the little owl looked so nervous that Seymour opted to let it continue enjoying its meal. He watched it eating as he waited for any other pokemon to show up for his various baits. But if the owl happened to look in his direction, he would give it a friendly wave and try to coax it to come closer. Unfortunately he hadn't brought any additional raw chicken parts.

"Weird, old shrimp," Jake replied to the pokedex. Given it wasn't a water type, Jake was not sure if he should catch it, but it was right there... it just needed some encouragement. Plus, he already identified its type, so he had to think of something.

First, he signaled to Manty to cut off the bug's line of retreat while getting skipper ready for an attack. Not an overt attack at first, just some charging behavior to try to get the little bug to run and hopegfully tire it out. If it did turn into a battle, Jake was confident Skipper could easily beat up the bug.

Rowlet, the Grass Quill pokemon.
Type: Grass/Flying
It sends its feathers, which are as sharp as blades, flying in attack. Its legs are strong, so its kicks are also formidable. It feels relaxed in tight, dark places and has been known to use its Trainer's pocket or bag as a nest.

Even though Seymour is a good distance away from the owl, it freezes as the pokedex says it's description. It quickly turns it's head 180 degrees to find the source of the noise, and seeing Seymour's movement, it throws a spread of feathers in his direction.

It's hard to tell what the Anorith is thinking, but when Skipper moves closer, it starts throwing mud all around it... only to dive into the water, heading straight for Manty.

"Yikes!" Seymour exclaimed as he tried to duck behind the branches of his perch. "I'm not here to hurt you buddy!" He said it animatedly, but not too loudly. It was clear that the owl could hear well, and he didn't want to scare away even more bugs than he already had with his last battle.

He had no intentions of battling the owl unless it persisted with its attacks. In which case he would send Locke back out to plop some snow on it. But if the Rowlet calmed down a bit, Seymour would pull a handful of food from his pack that he thought the Rowlet might like and offer it on a nearby branch. "I would rather be friends than foes, but don't think I'll just let you turn me into a pincushion either."

Seymour was sad to see the little bird go, but not surprised. However, he did wonder why it was so jumpy. Was there a big predator roaming these parts? If so, Seymour hoped he would get a chance to see it. Maybe he should have Farrah fly high and have a look.

After a moment of contemplation, he released his Farfetch'd and had her do exactly that. "Farrah, fly high in the sky and see if you can spot any dangerous-looking pokemon prowling the area. Something that might frighten an Rowlet. Don't let yourself become its prey though. Oh, and try to stay where you won't scare away the bugs too." He sent the bird off to complete her task, then continued watching his baits. A bit more nervously than before, but also a bit more excitedly.

Tch, the little bug thought it would get away. Now it was time to spring the trap.
"Alright Manty, use bubble to bring it back to shore!"

Bubble wasn't a particularly strong move, so Jake didn't think it would outright knock out the insect, but just get it to change directions. The goal was to keep it on land so Jake could keep track of it while skipper and manty tired it out with chasing and weak attacks not directed too much at the pokemon.

Manty gets in the shrip's way, only to take a bad scratch from it's claw. Jake's pokemon replies with a blast of bubble, forcing the Anorith to roll up from it's injury.

As Esymour peered through his binoculars and watched the icy caterpillars lurch toward the blueberries, it made sense why the Rowlet might be afraid of them. Assuming they were the ice types they appeared to be, the grass/flying Rowlet would be exceptionally weak to their attacks. Fortunately for Seymour, he had a pokemon that was doubly strong against them. And the trainer fully intended to try and capture one of the cute little grubs.

After motioning for Farrah to keep back, he brought Locke's pokeball out again. After letting the grubs munch on their berries for a bit and taking his best guess at which one was the most formidable, Seymour released the Laconney. "Locke, let's see if we can catch that icy critter on the left! Singe it with your ember and I'll throw a pokeball!"

Seymour will have Locke use ember on the Snom that looks like it might have the best stats. He'll toss a net ball at it as soon as it takes a wound.

After a bit of observation, Seymour spots one worms that seems a bit bigger, that the others seems to stay out of it's way. Picking it as his target, he sends out Locke for a surprise attack, burning it right away. Following up with a few net balls, one of them locks, while the rest of the bugs scatter.

OO: Seymour's Pokeball drops to Low.

Jake starts throwing pokeballs between the bubbles, but the shrimp is quite combative...

OOC: If Jake is willing to spend 7 favours, the pokeball locks, and he catches himself an Anorith, though his Pokeball drop to Low also.
