Re: If it's gotta be said OCC...

stress relief, no one goes fishing for the fish. they go fishing to drink beer, relax, and make up lies about the one that got away.

Russian grenades are great for killing terrorists. the quality control is often really poor so the grenades tend to have unreasonably short fuses. couple that with the average lack of knowledge most terrorists possess and you have a self righting problem of poor quality control combined with poor judgement.

Note to self, no cooking off the Russian grenades before you toss them into a bunker.

Re: If it's gotta be said OCC...

german stick grenades relied on a long handle for leverage that allowed them to be thrown out to fifty meters regularly. to take advantage of that they were equipped with a 10 second fuse. the down side was that at usual grenade engagement ranges of 10 to 30 meters the long fuse meant that many were tossed away or sometimes toss back.

In my uncle Earl J. Roberts squad during WW2 his buddy, Robertson, who was a former minor league ball player, once threw back every grenade that was thrown while the Germans were prepping an assault. He referenced the German record of the event in his book.

Unpublished Activities of World War 2 by Earl J. Roberts

I wasn't exactly a best seller but you can find copies for sale online.

My favorite parts are the detailed list of what he carried day to day with weights listed and the fact that he included several photos with the barrel end of his sans bipod BAR circled as a rebuttal to his instructors that insisted it would never be deployed that way.

I'm always surprised that more BAR gunners didn't opt for one of Clyde Barrow's whip-it gun customization mods on their BAR during the war. It was the inspiration for the Ohio Ordnance HCAR (Heavy Combat Assault Rifle), a .30-06 rifle on par with the G3, FAL, or M14 battle rifles but literally is little more than an updated BAR.

You guys have moved inland off the beach, you already know the town has been deserted for sometime. You can check it out if you want, but the real action is still going on to the northwest. If you guys want to want move forward a bit and push the mission along go ahead make plans for your patrol base camp and we will begin the actual scouting part of the mission.

In reply to Dr. Strangelove (msg # 273):

We might need a GM post just on the surrounding vegetation and other natural features. I've had a look on google street view just to get an idea on how dense the undergrowth is, height of the trees etc.... but an actual ruling might give us some good fodder for planning.

Just off the top of my head I would say vehicles parked close together camo tarps over both and supplemented with natural foliage. I think the threat from being spotted from the air is greater at this point.

A map would be good as well so we can plan our approach to the airport. Thanks.

If anyone is looking for a new game I am gauging interest in a Twilight 2000 v2.2 campaign similar to the "Pirates of the Vistula" module, but set on the Danube River.

link to another game

Send me a RTJ with a few character concepts if this sounds of interest. Thanks.

Re: If it's gotta be said OCC...

Updated map. The positions denoted are not on the courses plotted on your previous map above. Not run your teams, just a combination of GM plotting and poor navigational standards caused by choosing a route cross-country that stressed security and stealth over speed and tactical practicality.

You got GM'ed.

But, have no fear there is nothing forcing you to stay at this location. it's all GM plotting to get some action rolling and keep things exciting.

The terrain in this part of Florida is notoriously flat. Being on a thirty meter elevation is as good as being atop a eight story building. The terrain is scrub pines thickets, underbrush, and the occasional magnolia or oak tree.

Re: If it's gotta be said OCC...

Roughly how much time before the Hind gets airborne?  Are we talking casual pre flight or are they starting up the engines and rushing?

How much ground could the FAV cover before then as well?

Re: If it's gotta be said OCC...

getting a big chopper airborne in a hurry on the battlefield takes around fifteen minutes; warm up, battery charging, armaments prep, flight prep, comms prep and testing, navigational verification, orders given and disseminated, etc.

it's about the same as for a heavy armor platoon. unless the unit is basically sitting in a stand by posture they actually have quite a bit to do in a hurry to have the proper battlefield orientation and readiness to counter incoming enemy forces.

the FAV could easily be long gone before the chopper was airborne. even loaded down they can go from zero to like forty mph in around ten seconds or so. not a corvette zr1 but it is far better than nearly any other military ground vehicle. part of the design intent, the ability to run away.

Re: If it's gotta be said OCC...

If you've ever allowed anyone from Texas to chose their own radio callsign, there's always a theme.  One time, in band camp, I had a 30 user radio network and half the folks on it hailed from Texas.  When the cellphone system was down and people used the radios, it went something like this:

'Lone Star, this is Cowboy, have you seen Yellow Rose, over?'
'Cowboy; Lone Star, Yellow Rose is with Astros and Oiler, over.'
'Copy Lone Star, tell them I'll meet them all at Rangers house when I drop off Longhorn's truck, out.'

Anyway, since Rafael is a vehicle guy from Texas, I'll go with Alamo.

damn, Alamo, now that is one hell of a callsign matched to a concept for a game about the escalation of the cold war
