Re: OOC
Ziggy could use a two-handed weapon too. How about an M-16 with the never runs out of ammo enchantment?
:-)

On a more serious note,

  • Do the longbows have 150' range without disadvantage?
  • How high is the rubble around the perimeter of the ruins?
  • Is the "interior" of the tower empty? Are the walls still 10' tall?
  • Is the ground between the tower and the perimeter wall clear enough to move, or is it difficult terrain?
  • Is there an obvious path from the forest to the ruins?

I will go with the disguise prof if we want to try Paladria's plan. I figure at the very worst it will get Ham in amongst the enemy quickly. He also speaks goblin so we can keep her in the sky.

Re: OOC
I think we need to account for a rendezvous in the twilight or darkness; which will likely preclude an aerial assault (unless The Bird has darkvision?).

If the slavers are all humans as expected, then we can assume they will have torches/lanterns which will mark them. But I don't believe anyone in the party, other than Ziggy, has darkvision so if they drop their lights everyone is running around in the dark.

I'm picturing a somewhat clear space of 1800 feet between the forest edge and the rubble wall on the hill which surrounds the tower. If the we know where the slavers are likely to emerge (a trailhead) then we can arrange four ambushers on the hill that is 50' to 100' from the ruins (to the side of the "trail from the woods", I assume).

If Ham is disguised as a goblin, and Ziggy is the visible slave, in the ruins; we try to get the slavers in-between our two groups before ambushing them/calling for them to surrender.

Perhaps we put a few torches along the path from the forest to the ruins, so our goblins look like good hosts! :-) That would provide the light that we would need to plink arrows from a distance.

Or am I over-analyzing?

Re: OOC
The same lights that you're suggesting will allow the aerial assault as well.

Since we have no idea how they normally do it we may as well use this plan.

The straw dummies to represent the rest of the slaves is also a good idea.

I will add to it that Ham, or his hapless slave, will be carrying a lantern so that the area around him will be illuminated.

Re: OOC
I figured Domnal as the visible "slave". He does not need weapons to attack the slavers, so I believe he would be better used in that capacity.

Re: OOC
I'm not averse to not being the bait! As a spell caster, Ziggy will not be engaging in melee if at all possible - so he could be a sniper from afar, or we could have two slaves, which will may make the ploy work better.

Ham as a goblin, Domnall as a slave - both melee fighters (if I am correct); Hobo and Vern providing arrow from range, and Paladria providing some sort of aerial bombardment! Ziggy will be happy to fit in wherever makes the most sense.

If we can get the slavers to come to the ruins and the ambushers are between the forest and the ruins, we have a better chance of keeping them from running back to the forest (across the border).

I wonder if the powers that be have considered their national rights to airspace? :-)

Re: OOC
Further north they definitely have. Some of the more powerful (read: Higher Level) kingdoms actually have giant magical flying machines armed with repeating wands and other magical weapons.

The coolest one I can recall looks like a giant bird-of-prey (eagle, hawk, etc.).

I'm liking this plan, I think it would make sense for Zigfrid to be with Paladria, would be neat to have magic aerial support.

There ain't no way, no how, that Ziggy would be getting on that bird - even if it could carry him!! :-O

DM: is there any way to post a sketch of t he area so we can firm up our ambush?

Re: OOC
Sounds like it could work so far.  How about if the ambushers camouflage themselves and hide in any declivities in the ground in the area?  If necessary, dig a shallow hole hidden by a wooden lid cobered in sod.

Re: OOC
So, Domnall is the bait along with some fake halflings; and Ham is the goblin; and they will be next to the "tower".

Hobo and Vern will hide on the hill with longbows; which is between the forest and the ruins.

Paladria, are you going to be on the bird?

Ziggy will find a spot on the other side of the path from where Vern and Hobo are going to be stationed.

Behold, my quick sketch of the battlefield!

Re: OOC
All-I have  had a series of real life events that have come crashing down on me and will be stepping away from RPOL for while.  I was hopping that this would only be short lived but my hours at work are increasing as well.  I don't have the time to properly run a game at this time and don't want to string players along.

Apologize for starting this one up and ending it so soon.

Darn. This is the first game I've actually gotten a character to the mythical 3rd level. Life is life, though, so I understand.
