Hey, guys I'm still around. Couple Hell days at work but I've been checking in. Won't get a chance to finish my sheet tonight 'cause it's my anniversary but I'll knock it down on Thursday. I'll be changing my bio up a bit and do away with the half-breed and Native American type stuff altogether. I'll still be a fighter and like my ale and a good brawl, true to my Scottish heritage. I might look into blowing stuff up too. :D

Question on combat - is there an automatic hit, like a natural 20 in D&D? Or if you get to minus numbers is there no chance whatsoever.

Edit - I rolled a 2 on my final shot at 400m, so pretty close or bagged the sucker!?!

It's 5% unless the GM deems it an impossible shot, at least according to Star Frontiers. Also, if you get over 100% chance to hit (at high skill level/good modifiers) you still have a 5% chance to miss.

In reply to Kanatase Ten Bears (msg # 41):

Yeah, so long as the target is in range there is always a 5% chance to hit and there is always a 5 % chance to miss, regardless of how good you are :)

Sorting out these details is one of the reasons I ran these little training exercises before we get into the game proper.

Looking at the cast list, are Alexander and Jedd with us?

Also, how many troopers in total? Do you want us to make up some NPCs for you to add to the squad?

Awesome job on the maps! How many squares can you move on horseback/ on foot? Can you shoot and move more than one space?

As much as I would love to take credit for the maps, I found them online, I think its was the Facebook Boot Hill page.

When we finish this combat round I will update the movement stats, it's a bit all over the place now so I will probably bring it all together in a new thread.

It seems like I would not have a clear shot with folks jostling and Two Crows moving north, I was hoping to ride around the corral to flank them. I'd need to know how long that would take.

You have a clear shot as Two Crows does not really need to move either, at most he nudges his horse a little to his right but to fire 3 shots he cant go too far. As you are a bit further back you can basically move forward on the diagonal 1 square for a clear shot

Re the Character Development Checklist, I would consider removing the Roll for Age requirement and replace with a Choose your Age (or give the option). If someone sees their PC as a grizzled old veteran they will be annoyed if they roll and end up with a 19yo.

In reply to Virgil Merrick (msg # 54):

It's an interesting point you make, I guess it depends on the kind of game/campaign you are running.  Most of my games, regardless of the system (D&D, SF, Boot Hill) I usually start with beginner characters, in which case I want younger, rather than older characters.  I figure if you are an old grizzled veteran you probably have better skills than level 1 rifle etc so it doesn't really gel.

I have actually been considering changing the age roll down to 17+1d10 or 15+2d10 as I don't want the characters to be children but not too old either.  Once you start getting over probably around 50 in the wild west, then health issues could become a factor.  At least with this system (so far anyway), you can't die in character creation, one of the things I could never get my head around with Traveller :)

My character is 37 and a private.  Given skill levels I believe you are correct about an age change.  17 + 1d10 or even 1d8 would be more in line with the skills.

For clarification, we are armed with the Colt Revolver (6 shots) and the Spencer Breech Loading Carbine (9 shots). Is this correct?

Introductions (OOC)
In reply to Virgil Merrick (msg # 59):

The generic carbine from the Boot Hill rulebook is a 7 shot weapon but only one shot per round and as you pointed out there is a 9 shot weapon on that table that fires 3 shots per round.  As I mentioned in a previous post there are so many different types of carbines, rifles and pistols from this era so rather than try to list them all I have broken them down into loose categories.

Fortunately for me, Australia does not have a gun culture and whilst over the years I have fired a number of weapons at shooting ranges I am not familiar with weapons from this era.  This means I am relying on things like wikipedia to try and find stats and according to wiki it is a 7 shot weapon so I will add the Spencer to the weapons table as a seperate item.  If I can identify specific weapons that fit a set of stats then I will use those weapons as a default for a particular weapon category.

Oh and I think it's an Army colt, not a Navy colt :)

If you guys have more accurate knowledge on this kind of stuff, I am all ears, please let me know if I miss stuff like this.

Just for future reference could we move discussions on this kind of stuff to the Game Development thread and keep this thread for introductions from new players.

Thanks in advance :)
