Character Creation
Your party is called the Motley Crew. Perhaps this is a name given the Crew by others or maybe it is a name the Crew game themselves. Certainly the name's
cachet hasn't hurt business.
1
Things the Crew have in common:
*
The characters are heroes: Modern pop psychology and antiheroes be damned, the swashbuckling genre cries out for real heroes.
*
Heroes doesn't mean saints: Your characters don't have to particularly well-behaved or even law-abiding. In fact, it would be tough to be both completely law-abiding
and heroic in the morally-checkered kingdoms of Théah. It's OK to take the 'scenic route' to the right thing as long as it is arrived at by stories' end.
*
The Crew are loyal to each other, even if they have just met: 'One for All, and All for One', it is written on the can of this genre.
*
The Crew owns a ship: Each player starts with an equal share of the ship. They may even have once been pirates.
*
The Crew may have been around for a long time: Ancestors of one member of the Crew may have worked with the ancestors of other members of the Crew.
*
The Crew may have many private 'enterprises' to maintain and support: These would be valuable player characters resources but also plot devices in their maintaining.
*
I will add at least one GM NPC in the party: This will be a little extra control over the game. The character will be smart enought to ask the right questions but not smart enough to find the answers without the party's help. :-)
All of that said, here's what you need to know about your character:
I have the entire line of 7th Sea Second Edition supplements (and a fair amount of the adventures) so any character you can make with Second Edition rules should be legal. 7th Sea has allowed some free downloads to help new players.
The Basic Rule Setting, Characters and Basic Rules for PDF download are at:
https://www.7thsea2e.com/port/forum/7th-sea-2e-pdf-free-basic-rules
The Quickstart for Khitai is free, 7th Sea's future Far Eastern supplement, on Drive-Thru RPG (among likely other places). So it will be easier for newbies to make Khitai chararacters (although I will help newbies with other more exotic cultures should they wish).
My rationale is that there is a long 'silk road' from Theah to Khitai and the rare traveller may have made the distance. Given that the Khitai quick-start is not really a full culture, I also posit the tiny island of Nova Khitai, an island off of Theah's coasts with two generations of Khitai castaways whose fleet was swept to Theah after a sudden and mystical storm.
The Khitai Quick Start is at:

Characters are pretty much as you make them. One minor note, Choosing the Married to the Sea Advantage allows an extra share of the ship.

1. The players can change the name of the group from 'Motley Crew' if they wish. I simply don't want to refer to the characters as simply 'the party' or 'the characters'.
