STARDATE 48174.29 - Jouret IV

Captain's Log Supplemental

Three B'Rel Birds-of-Prey have brazenly attacked a Federation starship and destroyed the Takaran freighter which apparently still contained the prototype warhead. Once destroying the freighter, they broke off their attack, cloaked, and fled the scene of the unprovoked attack.  To make matters worse, an explosion took place aboard the station orbiting Jouret IV in the section housing the development team.

Orders from Starfleet were clear: provide whatever assistance was needed from the Takarans and ensure the successful completion of the field test, ensuring no other powers, specifically the Romulans, involved themselves. Those orders didn’t include allowing what appear to be Klingons to crash the party and end the test before it began.

The Mihoshi will redezvous with the shuttle Miyazaki and attempt to sort out what's happening.  From there Cmdr. Geary will be seeing to repairs on the Mihoshi and heading the investigation while I deal with the fallout with the Takaran government who are furious with this disaster.

We need some answers and we need them fast.

Kate reports to the transporter room for transport over to the station, after delivering a list of what she needs to the staff assigned to the sensor logs.  Namely ship registration, life signs if any, and heading.

What a cluster fuck, to use an old Earth term.  Going over the personnel files he needed to form teams to find out what happened.

   1) Chief Blatt Reapair the Mihoshi and the Miyazaki
   2) Cmdr Malko and Cmdr Nynev Need to be on the station investigation the explosion
   3) Lt. Keyes and Cmdr sh'Ellaph Try to use sensors and other means to track the Birds of Pray as well as if the torpedo was on the freighter when it exploded.
   4) Ms. Seward and Ensign Walker, Interview (Interrogate) All station Personnel, especially Dr. Brenn.
I will be checking in with each team to see how the individual investigations are progressing.

Pressing on his communicator, "Lt. Keyes, alert Starbases 23, 157, 234, 24,  and 324 to be on the look out for three B'Rels possibly making their way into Klingon space or the Neutral Zone.  Tell them details to follow our investigations."

Jason located Kathrine and Dr Brenn and sighed. He figured that the best spot to talk to the Doctor was either the conference room on deck 2 or the Security office and he doubted the Security office would settle the Doctor much.

Conference room it was! "Computer, please notify Diplomat Seward and Docter Brenn their presence is needed in the conference room on deck 2." Jason went to prepare, setting up the room and putting his pad down where he would sit. Now it was just time to wait for Kate and the Doctor.

Kate arrives shortly in her uniform without rank.  "I take it we're talking to Dr Brenn about the explosion and the B'rel?" she asked with a frown, not looking forward to trying to get into the doctor's head but it could be worse she supposed.

Jason glanced over as he set the carafe down that had water in it and glasses. "I figure we need to first find out what he was hiding then delve into that. Do you doubt that this is mere coincidence?"

"No the timing is to perfect, there clearly is some kind of leak, and sabotage involved, the questions are who, why, when, where and how?" Kate says.

STARFLEET COMMAND
UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANETS

Memorandum to: USS Mihoshi Officer Staff
From: Captain Farah Greene, USS Mihoshi
Stardate: 48174.29

Despite my best efforts to persuade them otherwise, six ships from the Takaran fleet have raced off in pursuit of the Birds-of-Prey. They're prepared to go to war and drag the Federation in with them, even though it is clear that, were they fast enough to catch them, they don’t have the firepower to take on ships. After communicating with Starfleet Command, they responded with what can only be described as a terse note: Find out what’s going on and, under no circumstances, allow the attackers to leave Federation space with the prototype, especially if they are delivering it to the Romulans.

Running the diagnostics, Bart finds the criticlal issues and start s to work on those himself, the minor issues he assigns different team members to get them on line.

STARDATE 48174.29 - Jouret IV

As she headed to MedBay to oversee more security, a few thoughts rattled in her head and she decided to gather a bit more evidence.

"zh'Irdani to Engineering," she called, hoping to catch Chief Blatt.  "I'm sending over data of my scans of the lab explosion.  Everything points to the prototype warhead being the source of the blast, but the yield and radiation profile isn't consistent with the prototype's simulated curve or with the Mark IV baseline.  Can you tell me how you might modify a Mark IV photon torpedo to create such a profile?"

STARDATE 48174.29 - Jouret IV

He had just finished up the recheck of warp engine diagnostics when he heard his name.  Giving the comm unit a slight touch to activate it, "Lieutenant, I'll will get on it right away." He went to his terminal, and just stopped to look at it.  It was HIS terminal.  The thought awed him.  He promotion had come so quick that the shock hadn't fully sunk in just yet.  He say an with a combination of finger movement and voice commands, he set up the schematics of the torpedo in the simulation program as well as a search of known power sources.  The quickly modified the torpedo, excluding sources that would be too big to fit inside the war head and those that would not produce enough yield to be fatal.  once he had culled out the obvious ones that would not work, he called over his team and then requested one of the weapons tech to join them.  Once he had explained what was going on, he sent each of them the task at hand and the known parameters, and they began to work on the issue at hand.

It took a while and several iterations of the program, but Bart and his team found the solution, "Blatt to zh'Irdani.  I have an answer to your query, The matter/Anti-matter chamber was contaminated with Krypton.  And because of that contamination, the yield was much lower than expected.  Sending our findings to you now." He typed on the computer as he was saying it. "And if you don't mind my asking what is this all about anyways?"

In reply to Bartolomy Blatt (msg # 14):

With Bart so focused on repairing the warp drive, he might not have known.  "There was an explosion at the lab facility," Nynev told him.  "The four Takarans there were killed.  I traced the warhead to the center of the blast, but it was far short of a normal photon torpedo detonation, much less what the prototype should have delivered.  Moreover, the Takarans should have survived given their physiology, but Dr. Dupont reported they were killed by a radiation signature that seemed especially lethal.  Would the contamination account for that?"

Thought for a moment before replying, "With the chamber contaminated, the blast would be significantly lower.  I could calculate how much Krypton was probably used in the torpedo given the blast radius and output.  But a different side effect would be the different radiation output that would affect different  species differently."

"I assume, then, to get a particular radiation output, you would need a particular amount of contamination?" Nynev asked, no chemist herself.  "The point being, this didn't happen by accident?"

His speech a a bit slow because his brain was contemplating the answer while he spoke, "No.  In a very controlled environment like a research lab, there is no way for this to be an accident.  Very much deliberate."
